    The thing a lot of people really should think about with blind codes is for pen testing, when you are scouting a location it's super easy to just take a snapshot of a padlock and a code. And I have seen PLENTY of large facilities or even municipalities that use the same bitted padlocks for a whole slew of applications.

      Picking locks is so super-easy in the _Splinter Cell_ video games. About 4 seconds to pick a lock, or 1 second to use a 1-time use instant lock pick, which presumably is spraying something into the lock that melts it or turns it into goo. You use that when somebody is coming, and you need to instantly "disappear" into a room before you get spotted in the hallway. But how realistic is that video game spy gadgetry?

    • @DeeSnow97
      @DeeSnow97 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@yosefmacgruber1920 If it was a master lock or something of that "quality" you could rake it open almost as fast as using a key. If it's decent it might hold up a skilled picker for a minute or two, and there are still some currently unpickable locks out there, so picking is definitely not a universal strategy.
      As for the goo, you really only need to melt the driver pins, but it might melt the plug too, giving you no way to actuate the mechanism behind the lock. Given that driver pins can be made out of hardened steel, usually the toughest material in the lock body itself, I don't really see that technique working IRL.

      So what do you suggest? I would love to live in a world in which we didn't have to lock up things, but there doesn't appear to be much progress in that direction at the moment.
      Regardless of the complexities, lock-picking will always be super-easy in video games. I just love how I can hack a computer in 3 seconds in a video game. If only more real-life tasks were that easy.
      On a few occasions in which I had legit reason to open a lock, not even having a key that happened to fit the hole, was of much use. I guess having a similar key really isn't a very useful tool? In the one case, the keys were locked inside the car.

    Wow, it is really hard to find information on blind codes. Most results show up relating to blind people.
    There is clearly going to be some differences between manufacturers, but: Are these just giant code books where there is a single code for a single biting with no mathematical connection? Is there some algorithm with which the blind code can be turned into a biting code, and vice versa? If there is some algorithm, has someone ever attacked it?

    • @RubberBanned

Of course I bought an extra and tore it apart and made a master key, but I'm curious now if that bitting info is also available somewhere? Our locks had a 5 or 6 digit number and also either V20 or V30 stamped on the back. V20 seems way too short of a code for a key bitting.

    Went to go see if I could use the combination lock method on an old lock I had laying around that I have never been able to open, but sadly, it only has "made in china" written on it, nothing else. Sad, I really wanted to use that lock. :/

    Very cool if you need to look up a lock every day but for the small time lock collector not very cost effective. looking for the old codes in pdf format.
