    Your technical and personal perspective and insights put you a cut above 98% of the other reactors. Just always good to see your Angelina analysis, as been said, " She has nothing to envy of Divas past or present." Simply the best!!

    I've been following Angelina for a long time now and I realized at some point that she doesn't really care about mistakes, which is a really healthy attitude as a musician.

    Very interesting and great advise.
    I've noticed that Angelina always was able to keep the performance going no matter what. Once she was performing with a band that had an over exuberant drummer that she was able to handle perfectly.

    Thanks for being so real! I suspect a lot of reactors would "pretend" they never watched the song if the recording failed. It didn't matter. You still can't wipe that smile off your face the 1st or 10th time you listen to Angelina. Enjoyed this💯. 🍁

    Thank you Ellis that was very insightful from another musicians point of view. This little extra I found very interesting info. It actually helps me to appreciate You as a guitarist and Angelina Jordan as a singer. Playing it Cool is Angelina Jordan's middle name..hehehe. Thanx for your Educational input towards AJ an Amazing Vocalist/ Not professional guitarist. She is someone who knows how to play things down while doing what she loves. AJ is above and beyond adequate in using her greatest instrument. her voice. thank you for this Reaction. On point.

    “...deliver your vocals...”. ☺️ Yes, we all know Angelina can do that, FOR SURE!
    So glad to have you back with your “studied” reactions (despite my lack of musical understanding). I love that I always come away knowing so much more about how music is crafted.
    Thanks Ellis, keep up the good work!

    That was an exceptional reaction and comments Ellis. I was totally focused on the vocals as you say and never gave a thought to the guitar playing Angelina was doing. She is still learning this instrument and has only brought it out a couple times but like you say, it's the vocals that grab you and they are superlative. Had fun watching this one.

    Love your break down Ellis. Very nicely done. Always loved this song & even how Angie did it even though it was just a teaser. Angie's musicality & music intelligence are off the charts. (I like how you brought up that she back phrases. Some peeps don't catch it or understand it.) Even though Angie has AP (absolute pitch) she still will choose to make it more organic & be perfect in her imperfections also. It's nice how Angie is playing the E. guitar, even though that's her newest instrument she learned & her 5th. She does play a standard acoustic guitar a little longer, but piano seems to be her go to most of the time out of the 5 instruments she can play.
    Did you catch her pronunciation of the word "sowed" & she said sewed, =) cute. Yes I know English is Angie's 3rd language. It was still cute.

      At this point in AJ's guitar progress she could have been strumming I Shot The Sheriff who gives a fat rats ass. Over the years Angelina has had excellent guitarists accompanying her. The need for a lesson based on a SikFok ditty is absurd.

    Her musical instrument is her voice but as she writes more and more of her own material it will help to keep up with her piano and guitar. She will no doubt get better and better with time she has only just had her 16th birthday. her innate musicality shines in everything she does. No doubt her instrumental facility will develop. It will be difficult for it to ever achieve the perfection of her voice.

    Great analysis! As a guitarist (mostly), I agree completely that 1) the singer gets ALMOST all the attention, the exception being noob guitarists with their eyes fixated on your fingers, and 2) adequate guitar playing is more than enough if your singing is stellar.
    Angelina isn’t a guitarist nor a pianist, but she has improved a lot on both instruments recently. With her singing (and lets call it «charisma») she is getting to be more than adequate to accompany herself, with all the freedom that entails. I do consider her a MUSISCIAN, though, if not an instrumentalist, because of her arranging and improvising skills. It will be interesting to see if she ever gets to a “Norah Jones level” of piano and guitar playing, but I don’t think that will matter at all in terms of success. She just needs to sing.

    • @peterhormell1511
      @peterhormell1511 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think Nora Jones is a trained classical/jazz pianist who has spent many years honing her skills, in college and professionally. I don’t expect Angelina to ever exceed Nora’s virtuosic piano playing, but I believe Angelina’s voice skills have either passed Nora’s already or will in the not too distant future.
      Both jazz artists have beautiful voices, however I believe Angelina’s will become the best female voice (of any genre) for the twenty first century.

      Good guitarists and pianists are a dime a dozen. AJ already owns and is in complete command of the rarest instrument on earth, her voice. That’s really all she needs. No one can match it

    I've noticed the same thing when she accompanies herself on piano. Her rhythms are all over the place; rarely precise or consistent (or even synchronized between the vocal and the piano). But when she needs (or wants) to, she can get back in sync on the next downbeat. Of course, she often plays fast and loose with rhythms and tempos, anticipating and back-phrasing with abandon (and regardless of who is accompanying her). I doubt she considers it a "mistake" -- for her, these are "style choices."

      @ShanLiB 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      What's amazing is how many vocal coaches don't understand the concepts. Especially the amount of improv she does during songs that require accompanists who have enough self-confidence in their own value to let go and follow her lead. They sometimes complain that she's not "following the beat" or she's behind the beat, etc. You instantly recognize that they lack experience with jazz and/or really gifted singers.

    She tells us it's 5am when she was recording this with her cell phone .. so whatever the secret is might probably have to do with exhaustion?? I really love this .. and love to hear her basically learning how to play her guitar .. she's doing pretty good .. but she''s new at it, it seems. I'm happy she's getting more confident to play it when she sings .. even at 5am!! It's fun and not surprising at all that you noticed when she was slightly off and listened for her waiting until it was ok .. she's not flustered in any way .. just doing it. Great opportunity for a guitar lesson for beginners, although most beginners would indeed get flustered but she ... she just steps back in at the right second... and keeps on keeping on ..

    It was not a big mistake, the tone she sang was not similar to the bass, but closer to the tone above that fits the first voice, is called the second voice, and just charming. You are talking about it with the voice in a band, and that it is the voice that you listen to. I do not care about such minor flaws, we do not care, at least those of us who can feel the uniqueness of her beautiful, colorful and strong voice. Angelina is a very charismatic young lady who has qualities not only vocally, but also purely human. The question is whether she will manage to survive in the American pop world, if the record company puts hard against hard and soon demands that she soon have to start making money for them ... I'm just saying, Angelina. Be yourself. Keep looking at us more as you sing, as you did, be yourself, be honest, do not become a copy of the American way of singing. Then I'm afraid you'll fall through, because the American way of singing is actually quite different from what you have in your Nordic music gen. I hear and see that you are trying a lot of new things, and I absolutely like it, stand up you dear Angelina, I love you no matter how it goes in the US. Deep down, I hope and believe you will succeed, in the land of all the best and worst, if you get to the best part of the American pop world. Take care of yourself, thank you for everything you have given me from 6-16 years, it will anyway stand as something completely unique and phenomenal for a long, long time.

    Angelina, like all true artists, experiments and in my opinion is aware that she does not master musical instruments. Her goal is not, I guess, to play an instrument well, but to search for the sound, the melody that her artistic sensibility deems most suitable for a specific cover.

    Really late comment, here… but I wanted to point out that she first really impressed me with her guitar playing in her very brief TikTok of "Killing Me Softly" 8 months ago. The "picking pattern" she was using was not too dissimilar from the one she used here, but was perhaps a little more complicated… and she didn't seem to be paying any attention to it (her picking) *at all* . It _really_ impressed me (even though, as you pointed out here, she wasn't really trying to maintain a fixed tempo - the same could be said about her piano playing, as others have already mentioned).
    I think the only example we have of her guitar playing before the age of 15 was her tribute to Ari Behn immediately after his passing in Dec 2019. (Search for those two names [hers and his] and you'll find the video.) About 2 months before the "Killing Me Softly" video, she accompanied herself on guitar for "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)". That one required mostly strumming, not picking, so it wasn't nearly as impressive in terms of her guitar playing.
    With her recent explosion of TikTok videos, we now have many other examples of her guitar playing. They're all pretty similar. However… even though she's clearly not an instrumentalist, I fully expect that someday - as she has repeatedly done with her vocals - she will suddenly reveal a whole 'nother level to her guitar playing, and blow everyone's minds. [grin]

    Was she playing the guitar dude? Sorry I was hypnotized by her singing. She doesn't stick to strict time in her singing since she comes from a jazz background where good vocalists play with the time. But here she's trying to keep steady time on the guitar and stretch out on the vocals and that's where things get a little out of synch. But I think that's more a problem with her guitar playing and not her vocals. I've seen her perform with lots of guitarists accompanying her on guitar and she never gets lost even when she's playing with the timing of her phrases. But in those situations, her guitarist keeps strict time so the vocalist can do their thing over top. I think even older professional singers who comp for themselves on the guitar would tell you how hard it is to play and sing. That one guitarist that she uses from LA on some of her duets does a good job of following along with her vocal style but if you watch his expressions, he's constantly surprised by her moves but manages to follow all her twists and turns and he's a professional. I think you really need to take this for what it is: an astonishing vocalist singing a magic vocal and a newbie guitarist who still manages to blow us away with her interpretation of a classic. She could have sung it acapella and it would have been perfect, but she strummed some chords for us regardless of her ability on the instrument and just rolled the tape and did one take warts and all and as far as I'm concerned gave a performance for the ages. So brave. Don't mean to be critical of your reaction, you're right when you say this wouldn't fly in a group, but I don't see a group here. I just see a sixteen-year-old girl sitting on her bed strumming her first Strat and singing like an angel. The roughness of her performance is proof of how honest she is in her delivery. Watch her eyes it's like she's in another world!
