They just reworked the materials reward/engineering system to be significantly less grindy. Still pretty grindy but now in my opinion it’s pretty reasonable and in line with other MMO or sim type games. So be prepared but don’t let it scare you away. The on foot shooting is actually decent with keyboard and mouse. If you’re playing with a controller you have to fight with the awful aim assist so it feels super janky. I wish they’d just copy and paste the aim calibration from halo or something lol.
Hot take perhaps, but I actually play elite exclusively with a controller (PS5 dualsense). I came from console, having played elite on the PS4 for years, and I eventually managed to migrate to PC after they scrapped all console support (still a bit gutted about that). Being used to controllers for most of my gaming experiences, I don't find it jarring at all for elite, including the odyssey pew pew. It's all personal preference of course, and I know PC hardcores are keyboard and mouse all the way, but if anyone's preference is to use a controller for elite and they're worried about it, don't be, it works fine and I'm having a great time 🙂
As a new member to the Elite Dangerous, I love this game. I play with 6 others and we all play the game differently and have a great time. I'm a Liner and transporter, my cousin is bounty hunter and exo biologist. Our buddy is a bit of a guru on most things, and the other 3 are traders/miners. It's so cool to see what we are doing on the daily.

ED has strengthes: - incredible space flight physics - players can influence the game world, but it takes time and is grindy (like supporting or even creating your own faction ... thought I cant say, if you still can create a faction, but you still can support one and try to expand its influence) - VR and 4K support, thought you have to somehow be able to manage the complicated and many control options. If you want to fully enjoy the game, a (high) quality flightstick/hotas system is recommended. You can also use a voice assistant manager vor various actions. (I think it is a third party programm. I havent tried it by myselfbut it works like Alexa/Siri within the borders of the game.) The game also has big weaknesses: - It becomes very repetitive at some point. Aspecially if you dont use exploits. (Those usually get fixed in a reasonable amount of time, so it might be more difficult for new players to reach certain successes in the game. Like a high ranking in the main factions (Imperium or Federation for example.)) - Odyssey. There were huge flaws with that expansion. I was hoping for claification in this video. But it is not in the expertise of the creator. I also cant say, if or how the console version was affected. But to summarize: The ED game engine was not designed for fps content and combat. As an effect, there were several times, that ppl were having huge performance issues. To somehow compensate that problem, high quality ground textures got swapped with worse ones. Many players just skipped on Odyssey becourse of that (and kept the original textures that way). Not to mention, that the fps contents becomes even more repetitive very fast. Since theres not that much variation in it. That beeing said: if you are an old time player of the Elite games, ED is absolute fantastic. While it maintained most of the old Systems (Elite on C64, Amiga and later Frontier Elite on PC), it brought modern aspekts of gaming into the game. You can play together with others but the game is for the most parts designed to be played alone. ED tries hard to create multiplayer content, but it is struggling with that. (If you want to play with frieds, I would prefer tocall the game something like co-op freindly than multiplayer, but thasts becourse I am personally not a friend of pirate play and ambush and rob other players gamestyle. Thought it is your decision, if you want to play in a game wolrd instance alone, with your fiends or in a open-for-all instance.)
An update a few days ago kinda took a lot of the grind out of the game. They overhauled Engineering and buffed material gathering significantly. Took them long enough. :D Elite is an awesome game and the best space sim out there. Like, a simulation. Pretty true to the genre. Steep learning curve, but you can get so freaking good at flying since you have full control of your ship and newtonian physics. The game also allows you to toggle off flight assist which basically makes you an object in space. Mastering that is yet another awesome experience and gives you even more control over your ship. Well, then there's a 1:1 recreation of the Milky Way based on astronomical data, everything moves in real time, planets are planet-sized and not shrunken down because that would be easier, and everything feels pretty real. The game got a lot more going and I'd absolutely recommend it if you like spacefaring or are a space science nerd. I guess you already heard enough negative stuff, but I don't know... I'm playing for 8 years and Elite is still the only game that gives me the feeling of flying a space ship. If you buy it in Sale you pay like 10 bucks for the main game and I think the Odyssey expansion too. And Elite doesn't come with more dlcs you need. It is basically a live service game, but you don't have much of an mmo environment. Microtransactions are mostly cosmetics. And yeah, they stopped development on the console version which will stay at the state before the Odyssey expansion. Some people swear this is the best version of the game though. I'm not one of those but well.
Fun fact: I can make as much money in one play session as I did in the first 200 hours /played. This works also if you have a friend as these high-pay quests are shareable but you need to have a friend with a good ship.
in short the answer is yes! lol it does have a grind you just need to no spend all of your time repeating the same actions over and over.... change up your fun. Also join communities it helps make it easier if you find friends to help. If you join other players than can help you make 300-500m in an hour or more making jumping to do what ever you want super easy. Now Engineering for late game stuff can be a grind but make friends it makes even that easier. Example my friend just started 3 of us helped him he now has 1.3b in his account to have fun and all he had to do was go explore the galaxy and have fun how ever he saw fit while we set up our missions to help him.
I have an Anaconda that you have to turn life support off in order to shoot all the lasers. The fact you have that choice makes this game super realistic and worthwhile in my eyes. I can risk dying to try an defeat an opponent by turning off my own oxygen. That is deep thinking and strategic space battles. I won't use it often, but when I do I usually run the enemy off, or kill them.
This is where Elite Dangerous shines in my opinion. Like there's many other space sim games that have other focuses like some plot/story or at least visible impact to the galaxy from your decisions (which Elite does have in the big events that go down but nowhere near as much player interaction as it could be) but Elite Dangerous' big selling point is the insane attention to detail they put into every little thing. One thing I really enjoyed was the fact that I could micromanage so many different things and if I wanted, run an all-rounder ship (with way more power requirements than power available) but with different stuff turned on/off for different needs. If only Odyssey wasn't as unfinished as it feels (and had VR) I would recommend it to everyone I know, and if the game didn't feel like you were the only player online 90% of the time (despite the fact that this does make sense, even the bubble is massive and that's like 0.001% of the galaxy or something) then maybe the MMO stylization and gameplay would have made Elite Dangerous a hit for sure. Still, I find EDO VR (just ignoring on-foot stuff) awesome, the gameplay great (if a bit dull), and the experience awe-inspiring at worst. All I hope is for Frontier to not give up on Elite; I know they'll make an Elite game that's everything everyone wanted and more.
Elite Dangerous is a complicated, in-depth game. It won't appeal to everyone - hell, it's a niche title that rewards people who have infinite patience and plenty of time to just enjoy the journey. But the community is amazing and will bend over backwards to help new players. If you want a quick blast in space with no learning curve this is not the game for you.
In depth? It's so shallow. It's just a space pew pew truck simulator. None of the AI are persistant, it's a very lifeless world with very lifeless economy.
The game is good, really good. A big problem for me was the communication from the developers. Many times it looked like they didn't want to work on the game anymore just because they were terribly silent. But that has changed lately, they probably had big changes in the company.
I love Elite I have over 1000 hours in Odessey and your right the whole game is a grind! Who every says the game isn't a grind obviously doesn't own a fleet carrier or get into engineering... In fact have fun doing any ground combat without engineering you space suit and weapons. Good video👍
I've only got around 60 or 70 total hours of play time built-up in ED over the past 5 or 6 years because I don't have the time I want to play the game. Having said that, after hesitantly trying the Odyssey version for the first time last weekend it's become a game I want to play more often now. Not having played any other space sim games I can't, nor won't, say that this game is the best, and for what it's worth I don't feel like picking up another game just to let it sit and take up storage space and not get played like a number of games I've got on my system right now. Yes the game is basically one big grind, but just about all games are depending on how you look at things.
I'm downloading ED on steam as I write this, never played before and I'm sick of no man's sky. I've got to admit, it is a bit of a daunting prospect and I can see myself struggling a bit with the learning curve because I only really have time to play at weekends. I've been playing this game since it was in beta and i still enjoy the base game and also enjoy the exobiology that was added to the Odyssey DLC and i'm also glad the devs are now finally starting to make the game less grindy.
With the grind toned down a lot I will be coming back as a casual player probably. I am moving soon and my flight sticks and such are packed. I will check it out after I get settled. I like how you mentioned the flight mechanics being so good. It was and still is the best spaceship flight sim mechanic out there right now IMO. I used to play like this was a job. Maybe if they add ship interiors and improve MC I will play a lot more
The game is well worth it, but if you don't have a lot of time to invest, it seems more grindy. And it can be. I don't grind, though, so it is more fun for me to just head out and do a thing for a couple hours, set it down for a few days or couple of weeks and pick it back up for a bit. When I have time, I'll load up on missions for or against a faction (not necessarily combat stuff, just for nudging influence). I'm still mad about them dropping consoles, but I did miss the game enough after two years to pick it up on PC.
The game has been a grindfest since the introduction of the Engineering mechanics to upgrade ship modules, it's been partially fixed just now by making sure that you can find all the high grade materials you need in certain High Grade emissions. ( then you can trade them for what you#re missing ) Still not a complete fix to some unnecessarily long game loops but... at least something in the right direction. Addendum : For quick money methods , look for Anti Xeno activities. Best enjoyed with the help of the Anti-Xeno Initiative ( AxI ) . Thargoid spire still host NPC ships that are worth 15 milions a pop . ( Odisssey required ). ( skipping the money grind is done at your own risk as you miss on some important "educationals moments" that you would go through by making it on your own , but community activities can be more fun as well. You choose as there is no real right way to play the game , only the one that gives you the most fun and immersion )
Console Play is great for those that don't have PC. Build up there, then copy your character to PC, which gives you a free copy of the PC game (without Odyssey). The lore is amazing, and exploration is about to get intense.
Space exploration games need to have realistic npc. Like the first "human" you find after traversing the stars shouldnt be a robotoid npc that just stand there and doesnt interact with anything. They need to be real, and chatty with unique responses or topics everytime. And dynamic like shift switching or lunch breaks during their work. Even with their own random backstory.
Whoever said it wasnt grindy is the biggest troll. I've played since the game came out (circa 2015) with abiut 5,000 hours. I can tell you i wasnt sight seeing that whole time lol. Grind was all it had for a very long time. But its nothing like it used to be. Not even 1/10th as bad. The max bounty when it launched was about 100k. The best ship then was 145m for just the ship - with size 8 class A components being another 150m each. And if you died? 30m per rebuy. Nowadays you can literally scan a plant 3 times and earn like 10m lol. Some high tier bounties also pay over 1m each. Its so kuch better now - and even moreso with the update last minth making grade 5 engineering materials massively easy to fill up in one stop, tak8ng RNG *completely* out of engineering (grade 1 is 1 roll, grade 2 is 2, 3 is 3, etc). Its looking really promising finally.
im interested in playing but I would like to know for those who have already played: I only have a ps5; is it worth it on ps5? I don't play MMOs and generally love the isolation and exploration, and building/ survival of No Mans Sky so the online aspect is irrelevant. I also don't want to spoil the discovery part by looking up gameplay as ive always had a fascination with space and the idea of a simulated Milky Way galaxy is really interesting. but as such, I don't know what combat is like or if you can build bases or what that kind of gameplay loop is like.
I have Horizons on pc , never played Odyssey. I also have console version wish they bring console back they lost alot of players when they abandoned it
played it for a few years It's a good game with beautiful graphics but oh yeah it's grindy & a time suck the 1990s menus don't help. Some things that drove me nuts is that we have Starship but no internet, Amazon, or Google
it was a grind fest in 1984, it invented the whole concept of the grind, it's what it does but it's only a grind if you're in a rush otherwise just play and enjoy the ambience. 1034+ ingame hours. Just came back after 4 year
The game is not hard by any means. It doesnt take much to learn it either. Only thing you need to know is that crappy ships can't handle combat so you should start by doing courier missions until you buy a proper combat shit where you can start having fun. The game is extremely grindy however, in relation to the engineers. Where you are forced to do glorified recycling in order to upgrade your ship components. There is also an incredible lack of information in game. So you will have to resort to searching things online. It is not hard to make credits however. And in fact it is the best part of the game, where you just take missions and get credits and eventually upgrade from one ship to another. But when you get to engineering materials and grinding them. That is an insane chore, I dont recommend anyone interacting with that crap.
The game is more or less close to its end of life stage. Frontier stock prices plummeted after Odyssey. With the introduction of pay for convenience pre-built ships and the live service nature of the game. Cannot recommend this game in good conscience to anyone, old or new.
Yeah I've been reading up on the Frontier stock stuff today. I mean, this is still a very good space exploration game. But the developer hasn't got the best track record with this project. I don't like how they simply stopped working on the console versions and from what I've gathered, people were promised stuff like being able to walk around your ship etc. I still think it's worth playing, just not at full price.
@@ChorizoMachine Their share price is three times higher now than it was. They never 'promised' walking around in ships - it was mentioned in a kickstarter video 13 years ago as a 'wouldn't it be great if one day you could...' and certain people have that as a gold-plated promise.
I tried Star citizen again this morning and the tram in New Babbage literally fell through the map, there was a delay on just about everything I did, frame rates are terrible, The game is still a mess. Going to no Man's sky, the only fun thing to do is base building other than that, the game is really boring and Goofy. Elite dangerous in VR is probably one of the best experiences you can have, It's not a perfect game but it's leaps and bounds better than the other two in my opinion. Star citizen It's just too ambitious and seems years away for any kind of serious playability.

@@davewills148 space Sims in virtual reality is light years better than on a flat 2D screen there's no comparison but I understand It's not for everyone, especially those people that can't look up to the sky without getting dizzy, It's just much safer sitting in a chair staring at a monitor playing a game that's been a development for 13 years only to watch npcs stand on tables and chairs t-posing or flying ships with glitches that for some reason can't get fixed before new ships are being sold on the storefront to suckers like you. But you're not alone. I bought a couple of ships before I realized this game is still very very far away from anything seriously playable.

Agreed. Don't buy the console version. Making money is pretty easy. Especially if you can get in a wing with others. But the grind. The grind is real. The rework of engineers has helped a bit. Should you play it. Yeah, get it on sale and enjoy it.
No. My experience of Elite Dangerous. Thrilled when Kickstarter/private backers anounced so throw in my sheckle s . several years past but launch date and beta test anounced throw all the sheckles i can muster into upgrading pc, buying hotas ,screens ..... Beta access arrives I get 5 mins of play pc crashes rince and repeat Same all through beta. Must be my pc build right ? so throw in more sheckles to upgrade pc further. No difference. Game is launched and for the first year at least 30 mins play before pc crashes rince and repeat. Pretty much same experience for years eventually stop playing around first incarnation of engineering as its ludicrous. Return around 2018 , find out its on playstation so buy ps4 and vr unit Oh no vr support on playstation . Play a lot on ps4 getting quite into playing fairly regular Console nuke Transfer commander image to pc version Throw in a lot of sheckles for new pc and screens . Third party software , patching moding pc , not actually playing much spending most of the time setting up pc and controls around it . Takes almost an hour to set up and get started on anything in game and god forbid you want to change what one is doing , having to plan ships routes modules upgrades , Again even when I am playing the game I am not playing the game I am setting up for an activity . Return to console version Head to colonia mooch about nothing happening Start to head back to the bubble get just over half way realise I dont care anymore about this game at all Realise this has been a waste of time and money yes their were a few hours here and there which I was enjoying my time but their is no escaping that despite the amazing sound scape and great graphics ......... From release to its final days now ........ Elite Dangerous was rather disappointing.

They should have added some kind of buildable space stations... it's boring.
No its not worth it anymore. After Horizons years ago, the Dev Team gave up, never listened to the community and now after losing a huge amount of the player base over the past years, they know want to revive the game with continued development. Good luck to that. Got my money's worth out of my Kickstarter accounts I bought for my kids and I. But now days its a mile wide 1/2 inch deep, and a massive grind. If you're interest in checking it out, buy it only on a deep discount sale and only on PC as they gave up on consoles and dropped continued VR development as well.
E:D is the greatest missed opportunity of all time. 1. Open only. The other modes should never exist or at least not affect the game world. 2. Crafting needed badly. We have 80 billion systems and a great resource collection system. Why can we not craft items, modules, stations, etc. 3. Player economy. This solves so many issues. Gives everything purpose. Elite Carebear has the best flight model, universe traversing systems in gaming today. There is just nothing to do
@@rwentfordable It's relatively true both at 600 hours and 4000 though - it's sort of like the truck simulators, both literally and conceptually. Most of ED's content boils down to grinding, doing the same activity over and over and over again to reach that rank/engineer thas module/unlock that ship. There's some variety to these activities, but whatever the devs add inevitably just ends up following the same stale "fill the progress bar" formula. Now, there are people who genuinely enjoy that sort of thing long-term, but the game should come with a big disclaimer that others will burn out pretty quickly. I get that it's a live service game that relies on longevity, but Fdev is so preoccupied with making things last long that they often forget to make them fun to do for more than a dozen times. The game is very wide, but shallow in most places.
Anyone who says the game isn't grindy is coping. I've heard a lot of people say "It's just a matter of changing your frame of mind, how you view the gameplay" and that may be true, but if that's the case then I can smash my hand with a hammer and as long as I'm pretending it's a robot hand and I'm upgrading it, then all's good. Short answer: NO! Nothing interesting to explore, planet generation is stuck with the same dreary desert planets, some of them repeating the few static "lifeforms" all over the galaxy, billions of times. Reinstalled it yesterday, uninstalled it after an frustrating hour of uninspiring gameplay and forgot it already.

Not everyone can the system requirements exceed some ppls salary not everyone can afford that kind of hardware...funnily enough my gaming laptop runs cyberpunck 2077 post edgrenner and 2.0 update splendidly even with Ray tracing so I'm not sure tho not only the systems but the game itself is somewhat above my pay garage tho truthfully if I could I would no doubt about that
@@marcobreedt1661 I played SC on a i7 6700 / GTX 1660 Super for about a year before i upgraded my PC. The better your hardware - the better, of course ..but SC can run w/ playable framerates on low/mid range gear
Elite dangerous is a dead game. The creators do not have any new ideas for developing the game. Years later, Horizon released the Odyssey expansion, which turned out to be a flop. You can get off the ship, but there's really nothing to do outside of it. Ground missions are 95% about sabotaging the power supply. I have been playing ED for over 6 years. However, the game has not offered any new interesting things for over a year. Constant grind. Once you have bought everything you wanted and improved what you wanted, there is nothing to do. Someone will say that there is exploration of planets and systems. These planets are practically copy/paste. Thagroids? There was supposedly a war with them, I flew through systems controlled by them and... I didn't meet a single one. So the game dies slowly and convulsively. The studio is in such bad shape that they decided to sell the engineered ships for real money and ARX. For me, this is just a scam for people's money and nothing more. So it is with great pain that I say goodbye to ED until they introduce more mechanics and new ways of playing. Like ship interiors, a more simulation approach to the cockpit, etc.
Just cus you gave up don't necessarily mean that fdev did aswell tho this doesn't mean that you're rong it just means that the game no longer appeals to you and I explore you to try different space sims to maby find one that check the boxes elite couldn't where ever that read my lead through the boundless stars may we meet again

I'm currently testing SC. I admit that immersion beats ED. In fact, people call it a scam. However, nowadays most games are. Eternal early access, Cutting out fragments from the finished game and then selling them for the equivalent of the game or half its value. Likewise, I'm surprised at people who admire ordinary python or T8 reskins. These are the same ships, just in a different skin. Isn't this just a scam in itself? As for ED, I played it back in the days of C64 and A500. Since then, the only thing that has changed in this game is...... the graphics. Everything else is exactly the same. Nay. On the Old A500 you could land on Mars. In the current version you can't do this. And the game took up only 1MB back then. The graphics were vector, but you can easily see the deposits on the surface. I don't blame people who like ED. However, in my eyes, the creators have no idea how to develop their work.

Hot take perhaps, but I actually play elite exclusively with a controller (PS5 dualsense). I came from console, having played elite on the PS4 for years, and I eventually managed to migrate to PC after they scrapped all console support (still a bit gutted about that). Being used to controllers for most of my gaming experiences, I don't find it jarring at all for elite, including the odyssey pew pew. It's all personal preference of course, and I know PC hardcores are keyboard and mouse all the way, but if anyone's preference is to use a controller for elite and they're worried about it, don't be, it works fine and I'm having a great time 🙂
As a new member to the Elite Dangerous, I love this game. I play with 6 others and we all play the game differently and have a great time. I'm a Liner and transporter, my cousin is bounty hunter and exo biologist. Our buddy is a bit of a guru on most things, and the other 3 are traders/miners. It's so cool to see what we are doing on the daily.

ED has strengthes:
- incredible space flight physics
- players can influence the game world, but it takes time and is grindy (like supporting or even creating your own faction ... thought I cant say, if you still can create a faction, but you still can support one and try to expand its influence)
- VR and 4K support, thought you have to somehow be able to manage the complicated and many control options. If you want to fully enjoy the game, a (high) quality flightstick/hotas system is recommended. You can also use a voice assistant manager vor various actions. (I think it is a third party programm. I havent tried it by myselfbut it works like Alexa/Siri within the borders of the game.)
The game also has big weaknesses:
- It becomes very repetitive at some point. Aspecially if you dont use exploits. (Those usually get fixed in a reasonable amount of time, so it might be more difficult for new players to reach certain successes in the game. Like a high ranking in the main factions (Imperium or Federation for example.))
- Odyssey. There were huge flaws with that expansion. I was hoping for claification in this video. But it is not in the expertise of the creator. I also cant say, if or how the console version was affected. But to summarize: The ED game engine was not designed for fps content and combat. As an effect, there were several times, that ppl were having huge performance issues. To somehow compensate that problem, high quality ground textures got swapped with worse ones. Many players just skipped on Odyssey becourse of that (and kept the original textures that way). Not to mention, that the fps contents becomes even more repetitive very fast. Since theres not that much variation in it.
That beeing said: if you are an old time player of the Elite games, ED is absolute fantastic. While it maintained most of the old Systems (Elite on C64, Amiga and later Frontier Elite on PC), it brought modern aspekts of gaming into the game. You can play together with others but the game is for the most parts designed to be played alone. ED tries hard to create multiplayer content, but it is struggling with that. (If you want to play with frieds, I would prefer tocall the game something like co-op freindly than multiplayer, but thasts becourse I am personally not a friend of pirate play and ambush and rob other players gamestyle. Thought it is your decision, if you want to play in a game wolrd instance alone, with your fiends or in a open-for-all instance.)
An update a few days ago kinda took a lot of the grind out of the game. They overhauled Engineering and buffed material gathering significantly. Took them long enough. :D
Elite is an awesome game and the best space sim out there. Like, a simulation. Pretty true to the genre. Steep learning curve, but you can get so freaking good at flying since you have full control of your ship and newtonian physics. The game also allows you to toggle off flight assist which basically makes you an object in space. Mastering that is yet another awesome experience and gives you even more control over your ship. Well, then there's a 1:1 recreation of the Milky Way based on astronomical data, everything moves in real time, planets are planet-sized and not shrunken down because that would be easier, and everything feels pretty real. The game got a lot more going and I'd absolutely recommend it if you like spacefaring or are a space science nerd.
I guess you already heard enough negative stuff, but I don't know... I'm playing for 8 years and Elite is still the only game that gives me the feeling of flying a space ship.
If you buy it in Sale you pay like 10 bucks for the main game and I think the Odyssey expansion too. And Elite doesn't come with more dlcs you need. It is basically a live service game, but you don't have much of an mmo environment. Microtransactions are mostly cosmetics.
And yeah, they stopped development on the console version which will stay at the state before the Odyssey expansion. Some people swear this is the best version of the game though. I'm not one of those but well.

Fun fact:
I can make as much money in one play session as I did in the first 200 hours /played.
This works also if you have a friend as these high-pay quests are shareable but you need to have a friend with a good ship.
in short the answer is yes! lol it does have a grind you just need to no spend all of your time repeating the same actions over and over.... change up your fun. Also join communities it helps make it easier if you find friends to help. If you join other players than can help you make 300-500m in an hour or more making jumping to do what ever you want super easy. Now Engineering for late game stuff can be a grind but make friends it makes even that easier. Example my friend just started 3 of us helped him he now has 1.3b in his account to have fun and all he had to do was go explore the galaxy and have fun how ever he saw fit while we set up our missions to help him.
I have an Anaconda that you have to turn life support off in order to shoot all the lasers. The fact you have that choice makes this game super realistic and worthwhile in my eyes. I can risk dying to try an defeat an opponent by turning off my own oxygen. That is deep thinking and strategic space battles. I won't use it often, but when I do I usually run the enemy off, or kill them.
This is where Elite Dangerous shines in my opinion. Like there's many other space sim games that have other focuses like some plot/story or at least visible impact to the galaxy from your decisions (which Elite does have in the big events that go down but nowhere near as much player interaction as it could be) but Elite Dangerous' big selling point is the insane attention to detail they put into every little thing. One thing I really enjoyed was the fact that I could micromanage so many different things and if I wanted, run an all-rounder ship (with way more power requirements than power available) but with different stuff turned on/off for different needs.
If only Odyssey wasn't as unfinished as it feels (and had VR) I would recommend it to everyone I know, and if the game didn't feel like you were the only player online 90% of the time (despite the fact that this does make sense, even the bubble is massive and that's like 0.001% of the galaxy or something) then maybe the MMO stylization and gameplay would have made Elite Dangerous a hit for sure. Still, I find EDO VR (just ignoring on-foot stuff) awesome, the gameplay great (if a bit dull), and the experience awe-inspiring at worst. All I hope is for Frontier to not give up on Elite; I know they'll make an Elite game that's everything everyone wanted and more.
Elite Dangerous is a complicated, in-depth game. It won't appeal to everyone - hell, it's a niche title that rewards people who have infinite patience and plenty of time to just enjoy the journey.
But the community is amazing and will bend over backwards to help new players.
If you want a quick blast in space with no learning curve this is not the game for you.

The game is good, really good. A big problem for me was the communication from the developers. Many times it looked like they didn't want to work on the game anymore just because they were terribly silent. But that has changed lately, they probably had big changes in the company.

I love Elite I have over 1000 hours in Odessey and your right the whole game is a grind! Who every says the game isn't a grind obviously doesn't own a fleet carrier or get into engineering... In fact have fun doing any ground combat without engineering you space suit and weapons. Good video👍
I've only got around 60 or 70 total hours of play time built-up in ED over the past 5 or 6 years because I don't have the time I want to play the game. Having said that, after hesitantly trying the Odyssey version for the first time last weekend it's become a game I want to play more often now. Not having played any other space sim games I can't, nor won't, say that this game is the best, and for what it's worth I don't feel like picking up another game just to let it sit and take up storage space and not get played like a number of games I've got on my system right now. Yes the game is basically one big grind, but just about all games are depending on how you look at things.

I'm downloading ED on steam as I write this, never played before and I'm sick of no man's sky. I've got to admit, it is a bit of a daunting prospect and I can see myself struggling a bit with the learning curve because I only really have time to play at weekends. With the grind toned down a lot I will be coming back as a casual player probably. I am moving soon and my flight sticks and such are packed. I will check it out after I get settled. I like how you mentioned the flight mechanics being so good. It was and still is the best spaceship flight sim mechanic out there right now IMO. I used to play like this was a job. Maybe if they add ship interiors and improve MC I will play a lot more

The game is well worth it, but if you don't have a lot of time to invest, it seems more grindy. And it can be. I don't grind, though, so it is more fun for me to just head out and do a thing for a couple hours, set it down for a few days or couple of weeks and pick it back up for a bit. When I have time, I'll load up on missions for or against a faction (not necessarily combat stuff, just for nudging influence). I'm still mad about them dropping consoles, but I did miss the game enough after two years to pick it up on PC.
The game has been a grindfest since the introduction of the Engineering mechanics to upgrade ship modules, it's been partially fixed just now by making sure that you can find all the high grade materials you need in certain High Grade emissions. ( then you can trade them for what you#re missing )
Still not a complete fix to some unnecessarily long game loops but... at least something in the right direction.
Addendum : For quick money methods , look for Anti Xeno activities. Best enjoyed with the help of the Anti-Xeno Initiative ( AxI ) . Thargoid spire still host NPC ships that are worth 15 milions a pop . ( Odisssey required ).
( skipping the money grind is done at your own risk as you miss on some important "educationals moments" that you would go through by making it on your own , but community activities can be more fun as well. You choose as there is no real right way to play the game , only the one that gives you the most fun and immersion )

You want a game with reasonable grinding? Play Secret of Mana, the OG SNES game. The secret to winning is grinding a few hours when you start.
Console Play is great for those that don't have PC. Build up there, then copy your character to PC, which gives you a free copy of the PC game (without Odyssey).
The lore is amazing, and exploration is about to get intense.
It's only grindy if you don't have Stargate playing on your other monitor.

Space exploration games need to have realistic npc. Like the first "human" you find after traversing the stars shouldnt be a robotoid npc that just stand there and doesnt interact with anything. They need to be real, and chatty with unique responses or topics everytime. And dynamic like shift switching or lunch breaks during their work. Even with their own random backstory.
We could be looking at 'base' building of some kind and potentially more alien stuff. Good hunting Commanders, see ya in the black.

Why?
Whoever said it wasnt grindy is the biggest troll. I've played since the game came out (circa 2015) with abiut 5,000 hours. I can tell you i wasnt sight seeing that whole time lol. Grind was all it had for a very long time. But its nothing like it used to be. Not even 1/10th as bad. The max bounty when it launched was about 100k. The best ship then was 145m for just the ship - with size 8 class A components being another 150m each. And if you died? 30m per rebuy. Nowadays you can literally scan a plant 3 times and earn like 10m lol. Some high tier bounties also pay over 1m each. Its so kuch better now - and even moreso with the update last minth making grade 5 engineering materials massively easy to fill up in one stop, tak8ng RNG *completely* out of engineering (grade 1 is 1 roll, grade 2 is 2, 3 is 3, etc). Its looking really promising finally.
im interested in playing but I would like to know for those who have already played: I only have a ps5; is it worth it on ps5? I don't play MMOs and generally love the isolation and exploration, and building/ survival of No Mans Sky so the online aspect is irrelevant. I also don't want to spoil the discovery part by looking up gameplay as ive always had a fascination with space and the idea of a simulated Milky Way galaxy is really interesting. but as such, I don't know what combat is like or if you can build bases or what that kind of gameplay loop is like.
Grab it on sale and it’s a steal for space and sci-fi fans.
I have Horizons on pc , never played Odyssey. I also have console version wish they bring console back they lost alot of players when they abandoned it
I had never played any game more than Elite Dangerous. Frontier lost me when they stopped updating consoles. Now I play No Man's Sky.
played it for a few years It's a good game with beautiful graphics but oh yeah it's grindy & a time suck the 1990s menus don't help. Some things that drove me nuts is that we have Starship but no internet, Amazon, or Google
it was a grind fest in 1984, it invented the whole concept of the grind, it's what it does but it's only a grind if you're in a rush otherwise just play and enjoy the ambience. 1034+ ingame hours. Just came back after 4 year
The game is not hard by any means. It doesnt take much to learn it either. Only thing you need to know is that crappy ships can't handle combat so you should start by doing courier missions until you buy a proper combat shit where you can start having fun.
The game is extremely grindy however, in relation to the engineers. Where you are forced to do glorified recycling in order to upgrade your ship components.
There is also an incredible lack of information in game. So you will have to resort to searching things online.
It is not hard to make credits however. And in fact it is the best part of the game, where you just take missions and get credits and eventually upgrade from one ship to another. But when you get to engineering materials and grinding them. That is an insane chore, I dont recommend anyone interacting with that crap.
Imagine playing a game the way you want in 2024.
It's a great space ship game with a lot of optimization. Once you learn it don't grind just find what you like. o7

The game is more or less close to its end of life stage.
Frontier stock prices plummeted after Odyssey.
With the introduction of pay for convenience pre-built ships and the live service nature of the game.
Cannot recommend this game in good conscience to anyone, old or new.
Yeah I've been reading up on the Frontier stock stuff today. I mean, this is still a very good space exploration game. But the developer hasn't got the best track record with this project. I don't like how they simply stopped working on the console versions and from what I've gathered, people were promised stuff like being able to walk around your ship etc.
I still think it's worth playing, just not at full price.

I tried Star citizen again this morning and the tram in New Babbage literally fell through the map, there was a delay on just about everything I did, frame rates are terrible, The game is still a mess. Going to no Man's sky, the only fun thing to do is base building other than that, the game is really boring and Goofy. Elite dangerous in VR is probably one of the best experiences you can have, It's not a perfect game but it's leaps and bounds better than the other two in my opinion. Star citizen It's just too ambitious and seems years away for any kind of serious playability.

@@davewills148 space Sims in virtual reality is light years better than on a flat 2D screen there's no comparison but I understand It's not for everyone, especially those people that can't look up to the sky without getting dizzy, It's just much safer sitting in a chair staring at a monitor playing a game that's been a development for 13 years only to watch npcs stand on tables and chairs t-posing or flying ships with glitches that for some reason can't get fixed before new ships are being sold on the storefront to suckers like you. But you're not alone. I bought a couple of ships before I realized this game is still very very far away from anything seriously playable.

Thrilled when Kickstarter/private backers anounced so throw in my sheckle s .
several years past but launch date and beta test anounced
throw all the sheckles i can muster into upgrading pc, buying hotas ,screens .....
Beta access arrives I get 5 mins of play pc crashes rince and repeat
Same all through beta.
Must be my pc build right ? so throw in more sheckles to upgrade pc further.
No difference.
Game is launched and for the first year at least 30 mins play before pc crashes rince and repeat.
Pretty much same experience for years eventually stop playing around first incarnation of engineering as its ludicrous.
Return around 2018 , find out its on playstation so buy ps4 and vr unit

Throw in a lot of sheckles for new pc and screens .
Third party software , patching moding pc , not actually playing much spending most of the time setting up pc and controls around it .
Takes almost an hour to set up and get started on anything in game and god forbid you want to change what one is doing , having to plan ships routes modules upgrades ,
Again even when I am playing the game I am not playing the game I am setting up for an activity .

it's boring... dead.. if you land on 6 planets.. you will see all the planets.. they all the same.. dead and empty... oh my gosh they have a few plants... ridiculous. the ground part of this game is a joke... they should have stuck to flying in space and produce better ships and MORE space battles etc.. They should have added some kind of buildable space stations... it's boring.

No its not worth it anymore. After Horizons years ago, the Dev Team gave up, never listened to the community and now after losing a huge amount of the player base over the past years, they know want to revive the game with continued development. Good luck to that. Got my money's worth out of my Kickstarter accounts I bought for my kids and I. But now days its a mile wide 1/2 inch deep, and a massive grind. If you're interest in checking it out, buy it only on a deep discount sale and only on PC as they gave up on consoles and dropped continued VR development as well.

E:D is the greatest missed opportunity of all time.
1. Open only. The other modes should never exist or at least not affect the game world.
2. Crafting needed badly. We have 80 billion systems and a great resource collection system. Why can we not craft items, modules, stations, etc.
3. Player economy. This solves so many issues. Gives everything purpose.
Elite Carebear has the best flight model, universe traversing systems in gaming today.

@@rwentfordable It's relatively true both at 600 hours and 4000 though - it's sort of like the truck simulators, both literally and conceptually. Most of ED's content boils down to grinding, doing the same activity over and over and over again to reach that rank/engineer thas module/unlock that ship. There's some variety to these activities, but whatever the devs add inevitably just ends up following the same stale "fill the progress bar" formula.
Now, there are people who genuinely enjoy that sort of thing long-term, but the game should come with a big disclaimer that others will burn out pretty quickly. I get that it's a live service game that relies on longevity, but Fdev is so preoccupied with making things last long that they often forget to make them fun to do for more than a dozen times. The game is very wide, but shallow in most places.
From someone with 5000 hours in Elite, go ahead and delete this video too. I played some yesterday and still had a blast. o7

I've heard a lot of people say "It's just a matter of changing your frame of mind, how you view the gameplay" and that may be true, but if that's the case then I can smash my hand with a hammer and as long as I'm pretending it's a robot hand and I'm upgrading it, then all's good. Death stranding IS the most boring game ever

Nothing interesting to explore, planet generation is stuck with the same dreary desert planets, some of them repeating the few static "lifeforms" all over the galaxy, billions of times. Reinstalled it yesterday, uninstalled it after an frustrating hour of uninspiring gameplay and forgot it already.

Not everyone can the system requirements exceed some ppls salary not everyone can afford that kind of hardware...funnily enough my gaming laptop runs cyberpunck 2077 post edgrenner and 2.0 update splendidly even with Ray tracing so I'm not sure tho not only the systems but the game itself is somewhat above my pay garage tho truthfully if I could I would no doubt about that

Elite dangerous is a dead game. The creators do not have any new ideas for developing the game. Years later, Horizon released the Odyssey expansion, which turned out to be a flop. You can get off the ship, but there's really nothing to do outside of it. Ground missions are 95% about sabotaging the power supply. I have been playing ED for over 6 years. However, the game has not offered any new interesting things for over a year. Constant grind. Once you have bought everything you wanted and improved what you wanted, there is nothing to do. Someone will say that there is exploration of planets and systems. These planets are practically copy/paste. Thagroids? There was supposedly a war with them, I flew through systems controlled by them and... I didn't meet a single one. So the game dies slowly and convulsively. The studio is in such bad shape that they decided to sell the engineered ships for real money and ARX. For me, this is just a scam for people's money and nothing more. So it is with great pain that I say goodbye to ED until they introduce more mechanics and new ways of playing. Like ship interiors, a more simulation approach to the cockpit, etc.
Just cus you gave up don't necessarily mean that fdev did aswell tho this doesn't mean that you're rong it just means that the game no longer appeals to you and I explore you to try different space sims to maby find one that check the boxes elite couldn't where ever that read my lead through the boundless stars may we meet again

I'm currently testing SC. I admit that immersion beats ED. In fact, people call it a scam. However, nowadays most games are. Likewise, I'm surprised at people who admire ordinary python or T8 reskins. These are the same ships, just in a different skin. Isn't this just a scam in itself? As for ED, I played it back in the days of C64 and A500. Since then, the only thing that has changed in this game is...... the graphics. Everything else is exactly the same. Nay. On the Old A500 you could land on Mars. In the current version you can't do this. And the game took up only 1MB back then. The graphics were vector, but you can easily see the deposits on the surface. I don't blame people who like ED. However, in my eyes, the creators have no idea how to develop their work.
