Dyna D18 transfer case oil drains into the T-84 transmission on this WW2 jeep

  • Before I filmed this video, I just completed a drain and fill on both the Dyna D18 transfer case and the T-84 transmission gear box. I took the jeep for a couple mile drive at 35 MPH, and brought it back in the garage.
The video shows that the fluid level in the transfer case is below the fill level, and the fluid level in the gear box is way over the fill level. Oil is migrating between the transfer case and the transmission. This is apparently a common problem on Willys MB and Ford GPW's.

I have a 1944 GPW ford jeep, same problem. Removed filler plug from transfer case & gear box. Drilled holes in center of each filler plug, brazed steel pipe onto each filler plug hole. Metal pipes approximately 5/16 diameter, 1 inch long. Filled transfer & gear box with GL 1. Screwed both filler plugs in, attached oil resistance rubber hose between both filler plugs. Secured hose onto each filler plug pipe with hose clamps. Oil comes out one compartment travels back to the orher compartment/closed loop situation. Its a cheap fix. I red there should be oil slingers on both sides of gearbox rear main output shaft main bearing to help deflect oil back into each compartment when vehicle in operation..

This was a problem on my M38A1, too. If I parked facing uphill, oil would drain out of the transmission and overfill the transfer, ruining the parking brake lining. Whenever I was in the woods, I always liked to park on a downhill, in case the battery was dead when I returned from my hike. Bad move! Transmission overfilled and oil got past the front seal and ruined my clutch.

I have since rebuilt the t 84. Installed new sealed bearing on front input & rear main output shaft. Wondered why leather boot at the base of the gear stick on the floor pan, is oil soaked? There's a small breather hole in top of gear shift housing. Discovered previous owners drilled holes between gear box & transfer case. I have since redrilled 4 holes/tapped threads/ secured threaded studs/ stop oil moving between gearbox & transfer. Installed in new filler plugs in gearbox/transfer case no more hose as in my first post . Problem fixed.

I used a sealed bearing in the rear tranny bearing and the transfer case would blow oil out the vent had to go in and remove the seal to correct the problem.

That's why the later T84 case were H, the common thing was to over fill the transmission.

Its has been about five years ago I have a 79 cj5 that has brass cluthes in the synchronizers and brass thrust washers in the transfer case and the gl5 ep oil hasnt bothered it in the past 2o years are so i have been driving it.l really dont know if there is anything to the ep addative in gl5 oil damageing the brass in the transmission Some say yes but others that have been in the transmission repair business for years say they have never seen any evidence of that happening most of the ones that says it does damage wants to sell you some special oil But i may be wrong have been before

@@johnntturner4451 I've heard same. Some say dont use GL 5 it damages brass syncros/ brass thrust washers etc... Some say GL 5 not harm anything. I reckon your doing fine mate. You would have known by now if you did any damage.
