Some years ago I had an accident and had to have surgery to get well. During the operation the surgeons saw that I had quite severe arthritis in several places. During rehab I met a really good doctor to talk about this. The one single thing he stressed was the importance of not becoming sedentary. And running, he said, was a lot better than swimming etc as it put stress on the joints and would lead to them getting better. First though I had to start proper strength training, lifting weights etc, in order to become strong enough in my knees, legs, back etc to be able to run and maintain good posture. So I did that while slowly increasing my mileage. A couple of years ago I started running barefoot. Today, the only times I experience any pain in my joints, back etc is when I have not been able to work out or run for some time, due work or being sick. As soon as I start again it only takes a few workouts and runs before the pain disappears. Physical exercise is literally the best cure for many of these conditions. However, one needs to start slowly and increase gradually, otherwise there is a risk of overuse injuries.
I've had rheumatoid arthritis since I was 2 years old, I'm now 23 and learned to live with it. But I'm shocked by the number of people that know nothing of the disease, especially the ones that assume only old people have it.
I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis when I was 17. I had been having symptoms since the age of 11 but it’s extremely hard to get a diagnosis in my country. It’s been extremely difficult for me, especially since I was told that if I hadn’t been keeping up with yoga (which I’m quite fond of) I would’ve been completely seized up by now. Fortunately I’ve been dating Methotrexate ever since, but I’ve been struggling very much with the symptoms of the medication. Today I decided to come to this video in the search of why there is no definite cure as today I had one of my worst flare ups ever during school. Throughout the day, my legs in particular just started to hurt so much. My knees felt as if they were crunching with every step resulting in me having to leave the school early. Nobody should have to suffer with arthritis, not the young or the old. I hope and pray that those doing their research will soon make a breakthrough and provide help to those in need. Until that day comes, I wish them the best of luck.
For some reason I never thought of arthritis as something to be cured before. I’ve only thought of managing and going into remission. I was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis at 11 after spinal reconstruction (and hip and ankle surgery simultaneously). I was in near constant pain for 4 years until I went vegan, started exercising, grew into my spirituality, and changed to Cosentyx. I feel so blessed. Now I’m highly active, almost pain free, and am off all but one medications. By the grace of God.
I have had osteoarthritis and degenerative disc disease since i was a kid. I am now 28 and dealing with hemiplegia, paraesthesia and episodes of paralysis. my issues are caused/made worse by EDS. This video makes me happy because it raises awareness of young people suffering with chronic pain.
I watched my mother suffer from both rheumatoid and osteo, so I'm definitely taking advantage of my youth to focus on prevention. An anti-inflammatory diet is surprisingly simple and inexpensive.
Really hope they find a solid for sure cure in my lifetime, I'm 21 and I've had about three major injuries to my right knee over the past four years and the last one that I had a couple months ago really did it and tho I'm mobile again I'm pretty sure I damaged my meniscus from that, my agility is everything to me and something I take pride in and arthritis is a deep fear of mine because I've seen what it's done to people in my family, my aunt borderline became unable to move at all and needs help just living somewhat normally and my mom always complained about her fingers, come on science I believe in you 😭, I'll also take a robot leg if that becomes a thing first 💀
Ohh I am 21 yo too, they diagnosed me rhumatoid arthritis, I was so scared even tho only my fingers were hurting, now my knee hurts as well, ankle, shoulders, but I feel better since I decided to change my way of life. Anyways I really hope you get better.
I have spondyliti arthritis since i had 8 years, its really difficult to have a normal life with this but the most important thing its that you have to be positive and always work out, swimm, do yoga, jump rope and be positive because everything its going to be ok

😱 I have spondyloarthritis! Thank you for addressing so many misconceptions in this video! I’m 23 and I can’t tell you how many times I’m told “you’re too young to have arthritis!” or “my grandma has that!” Seriously. Everyone who wants to understand my condition should watch this.
@@arsh4dkhan My dad and I got undiagnosed. He likely doesn’t have spondyloarthritis. He doesn’t have any fusion which means I likely won’t get it either. (He does have bone cysts and a ton of musculoskeletal issues from a car accident he had at 17 though) It makes sense because the treatments for spondyloarthritis weren’t working well. My brother was diagnosed with EDS (Ehler’s Dahnlos Syndrome) and I’m hypermobile so I’m now being screened for connective tissue disorders. I’m also being treated for a new diagnosis: fibromyalgia. I’m on drugs to help with nerve issues and they’re helping me. Chronic fatigue is better but still a problem but I’m finally able to work outside the house! I’m a teacher :) Being disabled is such a trip though. My diagnosis journey IS the most common story. Being given unhelpful treatments in the norm. The physical therapy that was designed for arthritis hurt my hyper mobility. The anti-inflammatory drugs messed up my stomach. I’m better than I was at 23 though :) thanks for asking. It means a lot.
I used to be a softball player for a year and it was the best cause I really love to be active. It was summer when I was 11 when I noticed my left knee is swollen but it doesn't hurt. It was kinda uncomfortable cause when I'm standing I feel this bulge in my knee. Then after 2 days, I can't walk. It hurts so much. Then after a month it was my hand, my wrist, my finger and my elbow. In just one year. At 15, I can't anymore stretch all my fingers, my elbow, can't even bend my hand, and the worst part is my right leg that joint between my hip and leg. It's the worst. I can't walk and stand for too long. Now, my back is the one acting it always hurts cause of my improper way of standing and walking. I can't seem to explain this to other people but I'm glad they don't ask me why I look like this and all but I know they know something is wrong. Sometimes I wish I was dead. I envy those people who can do all these things I can't do. I've been trying to find people who's like me but I didn't find anything. I'm only 24 now and I'm afraid I won't make it 'til I'm 50.
My eyes are tearing reading through your comment because my story is also same but whenever I go to different place people always asks me why I am different 😭 Sorry for my English I'm not from English speaking country
I've seen a lot of people suffering from this decease (including my father) and they seem to believe a lot of unproven things, hope this will help the young and old about arthritis.
One way to approach this problem is by the science of Macrobiotics. Extensive studies should be carried out to find countries or regions that suffer the least from arthritis and study history of the syndrome to find out when and where it started to manifest significantly etc. Then draw conclusions as to what foods, life style, or climate influence its spread.
being someone in their early 20s with quite severe spondyloarthritis with melting bone and fusing joints, this really sucks. and there is no cure. it just gets worse.
I'm here in a similar situation and i'm just 26 years old. I'm treating myself with yoga, nutrition and, the most important one, medicinal plants. I was skeptical at first, but it helps a lot if you search for the right plants and use in the right way.

I have arthritis in my toes because my legs aren’t the same length. It can hurt really bad sometimes. I’m not even 30, so I cannot imagine how bad it’s going to be when I’m old.
I was thinking exactly the same thing but you will learn to control it eventually. Autoimmune diseases are affected from our moods, so if you feel sad or stressed more that usual you will hurt more. See it as a lesson on how to control yourself better. Seeing a therapist will also help you reconcile with the idea. At least it helped me.

Hi Zavon , I reccomend your mum visiting a functional doctor as autoimmune diseases are 60-80% of the time the result of lifestyle descions - so the functional doctor will find out why she has this autoimmune condition , solving the root cause. Do some more research, They're mostly not covered by insurance. 2. Once you findout why your mum has a rheumatoid arthirits and the functional doctor acribes a plan. You can start rebuilding the cartilage. I myself have had knee cartilage damage from suffering from an eating disorder and have found this plan to workout if done consistently. My Cartilage has regrown through these factors: - focusing on strengthening and building my glutes (particularly the Gluteius Medius , as this muscle is responsible for the range of motion e.g. running, walking , jumping etc.) and by building this muscle your allowing the space between the knee cap and cartilage space to grow,- thus allowing regeneration. The exercise examples can be found here. (make sure to not do quad exercises because the quads are connected to the knee cap and therefore would add more pressure , which is what the glutes are opposingly doing as they become stronger.) gateway.physiotools.com/Print/P.aspx?PrintDataId=444d364c8ba44a1_C69A9BE1&PtVer=201901 exercises should be for the muscle training 3-4x (in order to allow the muscle to repair itself.) Try the repetitve exercises everyday - work out whats right for you. - The key to how I got my cartilage to regrow was REPETITIVE MOTION. Eg I cycled on a stationary bike at minimum resistance - MAKE SURE THE SEAT IS AT IT'S HIGHEST. and then once I was able to perform that resistance, increased and repeated the process. You can also do this on a tread mill, by walking and the then increasing the incline and speed. - Thirdly, FOOD. FOOD IS YOUR MEDICINE. I personally have 3-4 eggs with cheese, pepper and spring onions. Have Kale, cucumber, brocoli, prawns/salmon, a cup of milk, - I suggets searching what the cartilage is made of and then find the nurients in the food. Have 3 meals a day. Stay Hydrated. - Forthly, Sleep , SLeep , Sleep. Your body needs the time to regenerate. I Sleep around 10:30 and have a nap mid-day for 20-30 minitues. I hope this helps :) In addition as you , do this , if you have crepitus, it will clear up or improve , as the cartilage is repairing.
My dad has rhomboid arthritis and we are still trying to find a medication that helps him and I had been wondering why it was so difficult to treat, thank you for explaining so well!
I recently started developing arthritis(in my late 20s, btw). Never had any joint issues before, then I broke my ankle a couple months back. It's healed up nicely but the joint stays sore now. The fact we're going into winter and the rainy season where I live has not helped in the slightest.
Like, what the heck, arthritis? I'm 26 and my life was fine until 7 months ago. Now my hands hurt so bad everyday I want to cry. Like what is the point? Why did you appear? Go back to how it was 7 months ago. Go away, I have so much drawing I need to do. What the heck.
What I want to know is how yesterday I had no type of arthritis and today I have rheumatoid arthritis all over? How does that happen and I was on a mostly plant based diet and dairy and red meat and pork free!!!
I was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis when I was only 18 months old, it took my parents and doctors months to figure out what's going on; it then became stable for 19 years - but now it comes back to me ._.
Physical therapy and the correct type and amount of exercise are extremely helpful for pain relief and prevention of further damage especially in cases of osteoarthritis. There are millions of research studies devoted to this treatment approach. I wish I could see the work of physios more highly regarded in the medical community since PT/physic is significantly cheaper than surgeries mentioned in this video, is a less risky option, and often can be just as effective.
I was able to develop a plan using specific foods and suppliments to get my husband into remission from Junior Idiopathic/Rhumetoid Arthritis. He was heavily medicted from age 12 to 27. He's been doing well for over 3 years with no need for meds and no sign of arthritis or autoimmune on any scans or blood work. Stay strong everyone! There is hope to be found.
You can not compare osteoarthritis with rheumatoid arthritis. one is due to the fact that our joints are not made for such a lifespan and the other is an autoimmune disease. Of course there is no common treatment ;-)
I have an Arthritis condition. I have taken treatment as well. It helped for a while, but still have worst lower spine pain at L4 and L5 as the soft tissues bulged. I struggle especially lying on back and wen I try to turn and change position. It's really a painful condition
So that means we particularly removed the symptoms from body ... but not able to know their root causes ... Wow that’s great, I don’t know that ... Thanks 🙏🏼 for this information.
Hey Ted-ed I don't only enjoy watching your videos I also learn a lot. Your videos are crisp and so to the point. They explain the concepts in a much easy language and so almost everyone understands them. My mother has been lately diagnosed with arthritis and this video helped me a lot to understand this to a greater extent. I even would definitely love to share these uploads with my friends and family but the only problem is that they understand hindi and not english. Thereby I request you to also upload these kind of videos in hindi too. It would be a great help.
I cured my osteoarthritis with an all beef diet mostly .. it was agonizing in my shoulder I got rid of inflammation foods and ate more protein and within a few weeks the pain was gone .
I have pondered for some time the importance of gut flora in the health of us. And speculated that the tree of life (and you don't have to necessarily take that in a purely people of the book way) may have resulted from the ingestion of, was a killing of the optimal flora in the gut. Having been a medical laboratory tech in a previous life (and yeah, I was that kid that wanted to go to the rain forest and look for useful plants before there was a movie) and having had an interest in such subjects for some time, I had a rather accidental experience (on going also) to test the model. I had an infection that I took a course of antibiotics for, and guess what? My gout and arthritis that I have been plagued with for some time, mainly in the lower extremities, that has been getting progressively worse over the years went completely away, for several months over the summer, and the symptoms had just recently started to reassert itself. So I figure what the heck, it worked the first time so I took another course of antibiotics, and guess what? Same result, the gout and arthritis both went away again. Now I could certainly have some other infection / microbial problem elsewhere in the body besides the gut (like Lyme disease for instance), but the most logical reason to me is that the antibiotics killed the bad flora in the gut that were producing toxins, specifically uric acid (though likely not limited to just). Guess what else? Doing a search, there are actually studies that support that that is the case with people with gout and other diseases, having different flora in the gut then people who are, shall we say, more inclined to normal health. Unfortunately, the study only suggested that a flora culture could be used to diagnose gout and these other diseases, not that changing the flora could actually alleviate the diseases. That might indeed be bad for business me thinks. Any hows, I also ordered a couple good prebiotics / probiotics (has 13 or so more strains, the more the better. I take at least two different brands just as a fail safe that one isn't active), and we will see how long or if the symptoms does come back this time. Also like to point out there has been other positive benefits to taking the probiotics. Less cravings all the time, weight loss, acne clearing up, clearer thinking, less fatigue, less problems with circulation, less getting tired after eating, less headaches, etc., etc., etc. I'm certainly not the first one to suggest that flora in the gut can have dramatic effect on good health (though it is rather intuitive if we actually think about it, just remember the last time you had a case of food poisoning? We certainly know it can have a very profound effect in making us sick in big ways, but nobody ever suggest it can have chronic effects), but I'm the only one I know (least at the time) to suggest that we might have lost "immorality" because we lost the right gut flora. Immorality, leastwise to what we live now, but who knows? And of course, nothing I have said is meant as medical advice. Just purely observations I have noticed of my own experiences and thoughts.
I'm 59 and just starting to get some in my hands and now I think my knee. It's really hard because I have MS, osteoporosis and fibromyalgia and some other issues, this just adds on. I am hopeful for some cures but also depressed...
Benoy Matthews, a leading UK-based physiotherapist, warns he is seeing increasing numbers of yoga teachers with serious hip problems - many of whom require surgery - because they are pushing their bodies too hard. Mr Matthews, a specialist hip and knee physiotherapist and member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists, says he sees four to five yoga teachers a month. He says the problem lies in people repeatedly pushing their bodies into "prescribed" positions, when their physiology prevents it.

Yeah... But knowing doesn't help people who have such conditions :/ Especially old people who already have normal or low weight, don't smoke, and can barely walk, can't exercise. Medicine often just gives up on people when they are old. In Russia they don't even want to take old patients in because if they die, and they die more often than young people, they spoil their statistics, and that they avoid like fire.

Now I’m highly active, almost pain free, and am off all but one medications. By the grace of God.

😱 I have spondyloarthritis! Thank you for addressing so many misconceptions in this video! I’m 23 and I can’t tell you how many times I’m told “you’re too young to have arthritis!” or “my grandma has that!” Seriously. Everyone who wants to understand my condition should watch this.
i think your condition is the most challenging of all. i have early stage oa but yours is far challenging to mine
How are you now megan?
@@arsh4dkhan My dad and I got undiagnosed. He likely doesn’t have spondyloarthritis. He doesn’t have any fusion which means I likely won’t get it either. (He does have bone cysts and a ton of musculoskeletal issues from a car accident he had at 17 though)
It makes sense because the treatments for spondyloarthritis weren’t working well.
I’m a teacher :)
Being disabled is such a trip though.

Same symptoms but I'm 17
My eyes are tearing reading through your comment because my story is also same but whenever I go to different place people always asks me why I am different 😭

My mother is diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at age 21 and now she 45. She suffered alot due to pain. Since having no treatment available. She referred to local healer who told to avoid some diets for month and to our surprise she remains well off for some time. And to keep balance of hormones and enzymes. she practised pranayam for half hour.
My Cartilage has regrown through these factors:
- focusing on strengthening and building my glutes (particularly the Gluteius Medius , as this muscle is responsible for the range of motion e.g. running, walking , jumping etc.) and by building this muscle your allowing the space between the knee cap and cartilage space to grow,- thus allowing regeneration.
The exercise examples can be found here. (make sure to not do quad exercises because the quads are connected to the knee cap and therefore would add more pressure , which is what the glutes are opposingly doing as they become stronger.)
gateway.physiotools.com/Print/P.aspx?PrintDataId=444d364c8ba44a1_C69A9BE1&PtVer=201901
exercises should be for the muscle training 3-4x (in order to allow the muscle to repair itself.)
Try the repetitve exercises everyday - work out whats right for you.
I hope this helps :)
In addition as you , do this , if you have crepitus, it will clear up or improve , as the cartilage is repairing.
@@zohrant7399 thanks , i'll surely look into it.

I thought I had arthritis for months, but it turned out to be hEDS/HSD. I’d love to see a video on those conditions or hypermobility in general!

I can’t tell you how much my mom is suffering because of Arthritis. We are not happy in our life cause of my mom in so much pain.
Because we keep getting distracted by your amazing videos
