Starter did nothing when turning the key, found the brushes were not only shot, they were gone.

This video helped me a ton! I was just talking with Bob up in Ohio about it. Ordering the part and voltage reg for it.

Very well done. No nonsense and to the point. Now I have to go out and see if that is my problem. It's a 67 Wheelhorse garden tractor with a Kohler engine that won't even "click". I do have good ground.

A few of my old Briggs and Stratton single cylinder engines have that same starter/generator. Pretty cool how they use one for the other and vice versa since they're basically the same thing.

Rebuilt a lot of these over the years. They were used on a lot of things.

My 1964 Simplicity Landlord 9HP garden tractor has one of these Delco starter-generators.
The regulator on mine is mounted to the backside of the firewall/instrument panel.
The generator bearings started screaming when I was plowing snow recently and the generator seized up.
I took it to a local auto-electric repair shop for a rebuild ....It probably never had a rebuild since it was new.
I saw this video after I took it in for repair.
The shop called to tell me it's ready so I will get it and reinstall it and see if it is good to go.

great video, you did a great job explaining everything. just wondering if you should have polished the armature a little. is that necessary or should it just be left alone ? thanks for taking the time for making the video and sharing. you just made my life a little less stressful.

Interesting my 1949 farmall cub has a starter that engages the flywheel. Wonder if that set up on yours was only for the loboys.

does it have grease fitting? I bought one and there's a hole in it

From what I could tell, his is a 70 to 71 model. Later models have lubes hole in the rear to lube a bronze bushing. If it was installed correctly, there is a hole in it also that lines up with the outside hole. If you could see in there ,you would see the armature shaft. Put in 3 in one oil or sewing machine oil a few times a season. Couple of drops. Hope this helps. Good video

I know this is a long shot, but I followed your video and changed the brushes. I bench tested it with a battery before installing it on my Loboy. It turned fine when wire directly and the fields were also working. I installed it on the tractor and it wont crank without the voltage regulator connected. I was able to start it and it ran for about one minute, then it died. I tried to start it again and it just cranked for a minute and completely drained the battery. I tested for spark with one of those inline light spark testers the next day after charger the battery and it appears there is no spark. Could this be an issue with the voltage regulator? Thanks

If youre not a purist and more pragmatic, like me, dump the generator in scrap bin and get an alternator.

Does that starter/generator turn counter clockwise? I'm looking at buying a 154 and the individual that's selling it says it needs a new one, but all I can find online is clockwise and your video looks like it's going counter clockwise. I dont want to order the wrong one. Thanks in advance!

Clockwise. I think the framerate of the camera makes it look like it's spinning in a different direction. Hamilton Bob carries a lot of parts for these, though they can be expensive.

So if I jump it to the starter and it works but doesn’t work using the key. Do you think the solenoid is bad?

    • @1D10CRACY
      @1D10CRACY  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Without doing some testing, it would be hard to know for sure. But testing the solenoid is pretty simple. If its "clicking", you know its getting power from the key start position of the switch. From here you can use a multi meter to see if it is passing voltage. If it is not clicking, you need to put your volt meter on the smaller lugs of the solenoid and make sure its getting power from the key switch.
