I do think you've got to keep in mind that this isn't people choosing THEIR FAVOURITE pokemon. It's basically which pokemon are consistently pleasing when compared against others. Chandelure might not be many people's top mon, and people might not even bother to get it into their team super often, but that's not the same as them going "yeah, that's pretty neat :)" when matched against others
1.6m votes, assuming everyone completed every single vote, if we divide the number of votes by the number of Pokémon which is 1,025, we would get 1560 people. Could be less, maybe someone left a vote out or a few.
Assuming you didn’t need to do a full set of votes I would expect a huge portion of those votes to be people who came in, did 10-30 comparisons between Pokémon they don’t care about, then left.
i do wanna mention as a stat kid some of the drawbacks of your polling method. 1.5 millions is a large sample size but theres also a few clear biases (in stat biases are just ways your polling method may lead to inaccurate results). first of all, theres a clear volunteer bias. only people who actively go out to find the site will be voting, meaning youre missing some key demographics such as casual pokemon fans who play the games or watch the show but dont go looking for pokemon media outside of that or on the internet, and younger kids who dont have access to the entire internet because of parental screen time restrictions. theres also definitely a slight response bias, aka a bias inserted by the way a question was posed. by doing a 'this or that' format you leave the ability for all sorts of errors, such as somebody not knowing one of the pokemon and thus actually just voting for which one is more well known, not more popular Id also like to question if those 1.6 million responses are individual people or individual answers to a single question. because if its 1.6 million answers, that can add a huge amount of bias as individual people have an outsized impact if they do it an outsized amount of times, which really can skew the data. none of this means your data or conclusions are wrong, but when running statistical analysis, its important to address possible sources of inaccuracy in your data.
From what i can tell an individualy needed to complete about 4000 comparisons to have sorted the pokemon from favourite to least favourite. As someone else mentioned 1.6 million total responssess in extremely lows as it means that most pokemon were only paired against another pokemon once so its heavily biased by who saw which pokemon.
In addition to the amount of votes, the amount of combinations vs the random pairings also seemed to skew the results. Assuming the bottom 20 are correct, the order between them seem incorrect. How many times has rellor been paired against watchog or kapsakid? It more feels like how many times a pokemon appeared as a choice vs a popular pokemon and wasn't picked. Also, assuming less voter bias, not all pokemon are popular or unpopular for their appearance. I hate rellor because it's impossible to evolve. Chandelur is not as great a design, it's just a good pokemon competitively (and a bit of bias), vaporeon is liked not because of it's appearance, but because of it's popular use in competitive pokemon. Same with umbreon, I have played against so many umbreons in gen 6 battle spot.
Right? How they are paired is what I think could throw it off the most. If a mid range pokemon was often paired against a low range one, they would undoubtedly rank higher. All things aside, it would be nice to take the bottom 100 or bottom 150 and run this again to see the results, along with the top 50 and top 100. I'm sure the results would change quite drastically.
Isn't become well known because it is popular? So if they don't know about certain pokemon and not choose it, it means that pokemon isn't popular, so it is fit right? Casual/non pokemon Player know about snorlax, it means Snorlax is popular
Anyone-else remember when Chandelure was really disliked? As someone who's always liked inanimate object Pokémon, I'm glad to see the fandom's warmed up to some of them over the years
It looks cool, creepy and cute. I think it's also a bit about execution, something like Cinderace ruins my suspension of disbelief way more than most object Pokémon. A humanoid Pokémon that's also a rabbit that plays soccer and happens to look like it's wearing clothes.
I wasn't expecting Leafeon to be so high out of the Eeevelutons. Leafeon is one of my favourites but I tend to find people dont really seem to talk about it much. So im glad it got as high as it did.
I think one of the main reasons it suffers is because of its shiny. If Leafeon and Glaceon had better shinies like Slyveon, people would talk about them way more
@@Heriarka I know a lot of people actually really like Espeon’s shiny. Yeah it looks radioactive, but it’s def a nicer shade of green than a Pokemon like Nidoqueen’s shiny. Leafeon and Glaceon’s shinies look pretty much identical.
it is fun to see! but i agree. it also doesnt help that regional variants are excluded. i can see excluding megas, but variants are basically brand new mons.
Definitely! And not to mention that it's highly affected by the nostalgia factor. I think the correct way to make this poll would be with each individual regional pokedex from a specific game from each generation (not considering the remakes, third editions nor sequels). But anyway, ppl here in TH-cam only want to see videos like "best pokemon/ worst pokemon" for the VGC or Pokemon Go
there is kind of a selection bias though. this is only among your viewers. you found out who is the most popular pokemon "among your viewers" not the world.
So many eeveelution in the top 10 and some highly popular Pokémon not making top 20 (charizard greninja for example) like are you telling me that leaf eon is more popular than impfernape?
I’m trying to get through this video, but I’m so stuck that the first part wasn’t about the method but just the website. Like, how were pairings chosen? How were Pokémon scored? It’s eating away at me
i'm sad it was a "this or that" versus format rather than a "yes or no" individual question. as somebody who's only now getting into the newer gen games and media, i don't recognize some of the pokemon that made it into these lists, and i'm sure others in a similar boat could agree (i.e. people who are casual fans). the idea of choosing between two pokemon randomly paired against each other makes it so there might be large gaps and potential bias, like pikachu vs mr. mime.
@@crm7n It kinda confused me too tbh. It seems like it was based off Tom Scott's similar video on the most popular 'thing' he made awhile back which used the same format, which made sense because making he ranked like a million 'things', but for Pokemon, you could totally just do other metrics to rate popularity with its smaller scope.
@@crm7n why would it be yes or no questions? the point seems to be about preference more than just "do you know this pokémon" and while this method isn't perfect it seems much better suited for picking favourites than a binary yes or no would. even if you got two pokémon you didn't know you could still pick a favourite based off of design too
@@frostyclouded by "yes or no" i meant a format regarding "i like this pokemon" or "i don't like this pokemon". i think squaring off randomly selected ones creates bias or uneven matchups that don't exactly dictate your ACTUAL favourite pokemon, but rather the more favourable out of the two presented. like, how are the scores tallied from there? is it a case of just tallying whatever scores were given based on the random matchups, were those votes put against each other further and it became a "whoever comes out on top wins' type ordeal? i'm struggling to understand the methodology and how we got some fairly questionable top favourites
4:33 squawkabilly is the most stupid Pokémon ever out of all the Pokémon they could create all the designs and all the origins they chose to create another normal flying type that’s literally just a bird with a hairdo. I hate how common random animals with hairdos are in games like these 😂. The only cool part about squawkabilly are that he has multiple colors.
You’re absolutely not wrong, but I can’t help but like Squawkabilly regardless. A goofy, rockabilly hoodlum bird who get into gang wars with others of its species all over their plumage color. I also find using it in battle a guilty pleasure, Guts + Flame Orb + Facade can be decent in the right situation. It’s a bland, boring, unpopular Pokemon, but it’s *my* bland, boring, unpopular Pokemon.
I don't think Capsakid's unpopularity is related to it's newness. Smoliv, Annihilape, Clodsire and Tinkaton won over tons of fans, like Wooloo did last gen, and Mimikyu did before that.
i hate how capsakid is only grass type, no fire whatsoever until it evolves, it lost me a pokedoku game so i’m salty i liked it somewhat before that and scovillain is a chiller tho also just sayin i didn’t vote in this video’s ranking, so i couldn’t have changed the votes
Gyarados is kinda only frequently used in battle. I feel like ppl wouldn’t choose it as their ultimate favorite. Margikarp is more popular and the mascot
A little theory depending on why illumise and volbeat were separated by a few ranks. Depending on how many North American voters you had, Illumise is the regional exclusive of the duo on Pokemon Go. Volverá is only available during Valentines, so the North American Pokemon fan would be more familiar with Illumise.
I feel like the data feeds into a theory I've had when you notice how the bottom tended to be odd generations (particularly gen 5) while the top (ignoring gen 1 and legendary bias) had more even generations. The even generations tend to use more vibrant pallettes with smoother shapes where as odd ones went for more natural, muted colors and rugged imagery.
A couple of notes to take away from this video. #1 Greninja not being in the Top20 is freakin hilarious to me LOL. #2 Leafeon being that high brought a Big smile on my face! #3 Five, count em FIVE eeveelutions including Eevee itself in the Top20 is proving that the entire family will forever be beloved.
Greninja not being in top 20 isn't a surprise. Once it gets put up againest the other 955 pokemon outside gen 6, it loses a lot of its luster. What is funny is that Sylveon seems to have dethroned as gen 6's most popular.
I'd actually be kinda cool if we could see in the list how many matchups a Pokémon won vs how many it lost. The amount of votes is actually kinda low compared to the amount of possible matchups. 1,608,153 looks like a lot of votes (because it is) but there are 1,050,625 possible matchups, meaning there are matchups that didn't even show up twice. So I'm kinda curious how much of a bias was introduced through that, how big the margin of error is.
the way this works is something called sequential pairwise voting-you only need to win against your DIRECT opponent to gain a point. in general, this WORKS with large spreads of candidates as any other method would be far too complicated, so this is actually a pretty accurate list for this size of candidates
I remember when Chandelure was very unpopular in the fanbase. Glad to see that the Pokémon fandom have since warmed up to it, I always thought it was pretty cool.
I think at the time it was like "a lamp? They really gave us a lamp? Throw it next to the ice cream cone." And now it's like "YEAH HALLOWEEN SPOOKY LAMP TIME"
That’s only part of the pun. Capsakid is also a pun on Kappa which he really does look like a baby Kappa. I was very upset when he evolved and lost that entirely

These are some interesting facts that weren't answered in the video. This is also based off the data on the website, and not my own (so take that as you will) The least popular starter is chimchar at 460 The least popular middle starter evolution is Quilladin at 951 The least popular final starter evolution is Quaquaval At 641 Most popular middle starter evolution is Ivysaur at 56 (being one of the only starter lines where a middle evolution is higher than final evolution. I think only Fennekin line also does this, but I'm not rechecking) Most popular final evolution is Decidueye at 24 Least popular eeveelution is Flareon at 60 Least popular gen 1 pokemon is Kakuna at 953 Most popular gen 9 pokemon is Sprigatito at 56 Biggest glow up is Feebas (902) to Milotic (68) jumping a whole 834 places(milotic is my fav btw)(uncertain) Honorable mention to Tinkaton's line. Pokemon that age like milk (uncertain) was Grookey (289) evolving into Thwackey (927) moving down 683 places. Ironically Ducklett (657) is higher than Swanna(727)(that's what they get for encroaching on Milotics territory) Kleavor, Regieleki, and Persian are all tie breakers being chosen only 50% of the time I believe bug is the least popular type. (uncertain) Trubish (779) and Garbodor (840) are weirdly high. Take all of this with a grain of salt.
Worth noting that Flittle is the Pokemon that's so small that it changes overworld encounters into Random-Encounters-But-Its-Just-This-Stupid-Bird because they're so damn small that you don't notice them before the battle start animation plays.
can imagine him seeing vaporeon in the top rankings and feeling a sense of dread knowing hes gonna have to review it and pretend he doesnt know why its there while everyone watching nods in discomfort like. yeah. vaporeon. very nostalgic.
Does it ever occur to you that people can love vaporeon regardless?? Not everything that's popular HAS to be cuz of some silly meme.., being an eeveeluton, Vaporeon was quite loved even before that..
@@Sylvieboy72 lets not deny the power that memes have on the internet and polls. Despite what you want to think, the real reason Vaporeon is so high, is because the Internet gets stuck on memes.
@@adamusprime403 Memes can only get you so far tho before they die out depending, i do agree its mostly the reason it's that high in the top10, but people act like Vaporeon is only loved for that lone reason, even tho as i said it was before that, just not high up.
@@Sylvieboy72 bro, the most voted characters for the Smash Ballot were Goku and Shrek, among other meme and non-videogame votes. If people voted for Vaporeon it could have been for the meem as well
It's worth mentioning that Umbreon is a very beefy Pokémon. In both Colosseum and Gale of Darkness, I remember using them to tank out the toughest battles. I even used an Umbreon to stall and eventually defeat the Alolan Champion and their incredibly tough team. Some of those picks I'm sure were 100% design, but picks like Chandelure and Umbreon were also considering how useful they can be in battle.
When you're comparing so many Pokemon, a couple million votes is not enough data to have a clear vision on who is the most/least popular. You should've been more patient and done a much more thorough data pull.
Ngl I have a soft spot for Squakabilly once I learned that the different colored birds are in different rival gangs that duke it out like it’s West Side Story.
Cascoon, and Basculin being so low kinda surprises me, Cascoon does more interesting things than Silcoon imo, and Basculin stands very well as an equal to Magicarp, especially with Basculegion. Gen 9 tried too much to push the ugly cute baby Pokémon, I think Capsakid and Flittle both fall into that. I think the eeveelutions being ranked so high isn't particularly surprising. They aren't particularly hateable, they are pretty simple and cute. Umbreon just has that edge to push it to the top.
Flittle is quite cute, cascoon is cute, but the real crime is that gothita was below simisear, cute little one, gothitas are so cute. But at least I know this is not actually accurate for the whole world. If I would have know about this I would have tried to make things right. Gothorita and gothitelle should be higher on the list. Pineco and forretress are so cute and cool pokémon. Why are they so low on the list too, lileep, cradily, koffing, durant, so cute, but the voters disrespected them. Atleast cosmoem is quite high on the list, and the sword ghosts, but they are swords so I am not surprised...
Basculin wasn’t even close to an equal for Magikarp for a decade after its release, kinda hard to just act like that didn’t happen. And even now, Magikarp is still more useful in 9 out of 10 runs.
I have to admit, I actually kind of like Bruxish. Definitely a case of "every pokemon is SOMEONE'S favorite" but I used to play Dark Cloud and Dark Cloud 2 SO MUCH as a kid. Like I beat it and restarted multiple times. And in the second game, is a giant fish monster you have to appease in order to move on called the Holy One (it's species is a King Mardan, so the game is a little confusing on which name to call it) and it has the personality of James from Team Rocket. xD But it has everything from the weird teeth, with lips and eyelashes. They're even both very similar shades of purple, yellow and blue. Just rearranged. So yeah, I'm actually fond of it. Maybe it will never be my top 10 favorites (that goes to several bug pokemon) but it's definitely one I actively hunted down for my Sun and Moon playthrough.
Is that really how they all ranked? I’m actually rather surprised. I actually thought Skelidirge would rank much higher. I thought they were the absolute best starter Pokémon in the series (essentially from having their Fire Bird). But at least I can take a little comfort in knowing that Samurott ranked above them. Since even though I initially thought Skelidirge was the absolute best, Samurott is still my absolute favourite in the entire series. I love that Samurai Otter! I also noticed that Meowscarada reached the top 100. I guess the Phantom Thief Grass Cat Magician won over a lot more people than I initially thought, including myself because I love Meowscarada as well. Though I also realised that people are NOT fond of Quaquaval. Which is actually really sad because I’ve seen some people absolutely detest that Pokémon, even though they’re one I actually have a soft spot for.
Squakabilly deserved much more love. Same with blipbug. I also think Capsakid works great, reminds me of Ludo, the baddie in Star Vs The Forces Of Evil
I'm not sure why you're confused by binacle? Barnacles are crustaceans famous for attaching to objects, like rocks. Some species also do look like clawed hands :)
If you ever redo this video if there are like 3 4 or 5 new generations, I would do the regional variant as their own entry if I were you, not only are regional very different than most form changes but 90% of regional variants are more popular than the original versions
Not gonna lie, I thought #1 was gonna be a certain frog from Gen 6 that shares its Dark-Type with Umbreon, but Umbreon being #1 is a pleasant surprise.
The fact that those pokemon are the top 20 perfectly illustrates the abyssal lack of imagination of people. I mean, we knew that already but this is substantial evidence.
Leafeon surprised me with how high up it was, but so did chandelure. I thought I was near alone with him in my favourites list. Cool to see others love him too!
This should be more “most favorite Pokémon” than most popular since the Pokémon were paired up against each other and people just picked the one that most of the time they liked more beforehand, or just one that they thought looked appealing to them. If you were to do a popularity list you could get people to type or list as many Pokémon as they can (limit it to maybe 100 so they can’t just list the Pokédex) and then maybe see which ones were named the least.
When I was at school, I saw the poll, my friend looked over my shoulder and said “POKEMON SMASH OR PASS??!” Which resulted in my friends and I using the website for smash or pass over another, and some very judgy freshman judging us.
I think it would've been more accurate to allow voters to freely pick their favorite 10 and least favorite 10. When taking the quiz, I dropped out around 10 minutes. I imagine others may have done this too, so they weren't exposed to more Pokemon.
The thing is, it would've need a lot more manual check and some ones probably would not even be mentioned at all (mostly midle stages) BUT it would be more accurate in my opinion.
Favorite 10 makes sense. But least favorite wouldn't work becouse people's least favorite tend to be forgetable. So they wouldn't even be counted on people's lists. Many would probably put Charizard as least favorite becouse of it's popularity. Which wouldn't be accurate.
I think what's cool about Pokémon in general is everyone has their own favourite. Mine has always been Sandslash, mainly because I think few other Pokémon actively personify that wild edge that Sandslash does, it looks like a wild creature that is perfectly adapted to dry areas, and its spiked design is awesome. Plus Pokémon Blue version was the first game I ever played back in the year 2000, and Sandslash became my ace after wiping the floor with Surge and then helping stomp; Koga, 90% of the Rockets, Blaine, Agatha and the rivals final team. That gen I combo of; Slash, Earthquake, Sword dance and body slam was lethal.
It's a fine experiment but I can't put much value into a popularity list that puts Rowlet ahead of Charizard, Pikachu or Mew, not to mention the other top 20 mentioned here 😂

I wasn't expecting Leafeon to be so high out of the Eeevelutons. Leafeon is one of my favourites but I tend to find people dont really seem to talk about it much. So im glad it got as high as it did.
I think one of the main reasons it suffers is because of its shiny. If Leafeon and Glaceon had better shinies like Slyveon, people would talk about them way more
@@TonithealtwingEspeon has a gross shiny and still ranked all the way up

In terms of the most liked, yes. But I agree with all of the least liked.

I’m trying to get through this video, but I’m so stuck that the first part wasn’t about the method but just the website. Like, how were pairings chosen? How were Pokémon scored? It’s eating away at me
The pairings were chosen at random, don't know about the scores
i'm sad it was a "this or that" versus format rather than a "yes or no" individual question. as somebody who's only now getting into the newer gen games and media, i don't recognize some of the pokemon that made it into these lists, and i'm sure others in a similar boat could agree (i.e. people who are casual fans). the idea of choosing between two pokemon randomly paired against each other makes it so there might be large gaps and potential bias, like pikachu vs mr.

And this is PROOF that eevee and the eeveelutions would be a better main/front mascot over that yellow electric mouse.
Clefairy was actually intended to be the mascot originally.
@@eightcoins4401 Jigglypuff was, not clefairy.
@@XenithShadow Pretty sure it was Clefairy...
And MOE for *1 million votes* is somewhere in the thousands place 😅

Gen 9 tried too much to push the ugly cute baby Pokémon, I think Capsakid and Flittle both fall into that.
I think the eeveelutions being ranked so high isn't particularly surprising. They aren't particularly hateable, they are pretty simple and cute.
Umbreon just has that edge to push it to the top.
Flittle is quite cute, cascoon is cute, but the real crime is that gothita was below simisear, cute little one, gothitas are so cute. But at least I know this is not actually accurate for the whole world.

But who was the most smashable pokemon?? You can't keep us waiting!!
It would seem, based on your methods, kids were left out of this poll. That might explain the low pickachu vote.
