When I was in middle school groups of white boys would chase me down the halls screaming “n***** f*****” because it would make me cry. Without fail. My parents and grandparents and great grandmother would sit me down and tell me stories of slavery, bigotry, misogyny, r*pe and dehumanization. That is what those words carry. I understand not all people realize this is what these words carry. So people are speaking out about it. That’s what this is about. That is the harm that was facilitated. The ignorance and the weaponization of language under the guise of apathy. I don’t mean to lecture. Im just disappointed in this take. I understand that hatred wasn’t Ian’s intention, but it is nice he is willing to take responsibility. 2016 TH-cam was awful for so many children of color and there was an impact. It all feels so counterproductive to undermine Ian’s apology and reflection. Him speaking on his turn to empathy is useful for people on the fence about things. However, that person who use to find that funny also enabled others to make racist remakes about them because they wanted to fit in. Being in my 20’s I can now see how damaging casual racist jokes were to my self image and how I saw other black people were. Racist humor whether with good attentions or not still place a seed of bigotry that can grow into many things. Hate, depression, self doubt, confusion. I'm a woman who likes idubbbz's content, and I have liked it since that time. I had never noticed that his fanbase was so bizarrely misogynistic until the Anisa thing started, it was shocking to me that he had to talk about it to his fans and tell them that sex work is fine (That's the situation I'm referencing here). Because before that I was just like you, thinking there was no harm being done, he was just being edgy and everybody understands that, right? Turns out he was breeding a very specific type of harmful human being who were his fans and even though I was his fan too, those people didn't even see me as a person. And all those fans assumed Ian was a racist, a mispogynist and a homophobe for real, not just "ironically", that's super dangerous. So yes the apology was very much justified and I am so glad he made it because I was always a fan and it's good to know that he is not a horrible person and has grew as a person.

I’m a female-born trans, bi, and autistic person who used to watch his content. My gf of the time would send me videos of his. The Tana video is where I drew the line. His defense of slurs made zero sense to me. Casual use of slurs was something I noticed people would act like wouldn’t hurt me but it was always a slippery slope to people then voting literally against my basic human rights. Or degrading me, assaulting me, kicking me out of my household. It was never just a word.

    • @amanda-uw3un

@@asmrtpop2676 yeah, I think I don't really have the same relationship with slurs as people who are American or have english as a first language (idk if that is your case but I'm assuming so). So when I watched that video it did seem like just edge to me, I didn't know how slurs are actually a big big deal in English. In my language (portuguese) we have very bad words but they don't have that weight, we don't really have completely forbidden words and usually those offensive words end up getting reivindicated by the group whose offense was directed to and they lose their strenght. Of course based on context you can absolutely use them in a very offensive way but there is no such thing as a "slur" the way you guys have. So now I get that that was in very bad taste but at the time I just interpreted the way I do in my language.

You dont need to dedicated 2-3 videoes and go podcast after podcast to appologies for being edgy 8 to 9 years ago when everyone else was.
you dont see all of the 2016 edgelords saying they'll never forgive themselves for being edgy 8 years ago.

isn’t it possible he is just genuinely reflecting on his past and how he’s dealt with it? Like Charlie says “this wasn’t so damaging that his career would be over” but maybe he just genuinely feels bad in his own opinion and wants to reflect. You don’t always need an exterior motive to apologize. Idk maybe i’m crazy

Idubbz is right that he contributed to a culture of cruelty and bullying and if you weren't on the receiving end of it, maybe you aren't part of the marginalized groups that suffered it and should keep your yap shut

@Rapistgaming-uq8fb Does it matter? Charlie is one of the biggest creators on the platform, everything he talks about garners huge amounts of attention. He should have enough awareness to understand that a sensitive topic like racism, bullying and online bigotry is not the kind of space he should be intruding. If he doesn't understand the effect he has a discourse then it's better he learns now rather than with something even more serious

@@ratlab5680 Bro, he was never actually racist towards anyone or bullying anyone.
The only times he used offensive language/slurs, was when he was doing satire. He wasn't bullying people, just calling people out on their bs. Such as that Jynx guy or w.e. He was literally just stealing people content and not contributing anything to it and was being called out. Now people are trying to say it was racist to call him out just because he's black.
I am a PoC btw, and yes, this younger generation is soft af. They treat everything as if it personally hurt them and everything is racism and the patriarchy. Its ridiculous. Grow some backbone.

I agree with the idea that he doesn't *have* to apologise for the content he created 7 years ago, but I believe if he *wants* to apologise for it then he should be allowed to. If he genuinely feels bad for the impact he had on people then he has every right to apologise. In my eyes he didn't make this decision to satisfy his audience, he did it for himself

I get what you’re saying but at the end of the day, his guilt for his past will never compare to the abuse marginalized have had to and will have to face, and that he’s spent his career promoting, and it’s tone deaf if you can’t see how anyone but he can benefit from his platformed apology for and denouncing of bigoted ideology.
