For this tour they designed these huge high resolution LED "cages," for lack of a better word, which were layered in front of and behind the band. The bars are thin enough that from a distance you can't really see them, so when the lights are on it looks semitransparent. By synchronizing the front and back lighting animations, it allowed them to make it look like the band was surrounded by 3D holograms.
