When I was a kid my dad would groove to this song after he got home from work. My mom would come in shouting at him to lower it. He'd grin at my brother and me and just turn it up. I'm sure he's still rocking up in heaven.
Keyboard wizard shown here Mike Lindup has music in his genes . His mother was a black singer and pianist from Belize(small country just underneath the southern tip of Mexico) , His father was white, the leader of a mid 20th century "big band", music arranger and composer in England . She came to the UK to further her education and joined the women's army . One story has it that Mike's mom and dad were entertaining British soldiers at a show, they met , fell in love, married and begot Mike and one or two other siblings. Lindup is still playing and recording with bassist singer Mark King of Level 42 . After the Gould brothers left there have been many different lineups on guitar, drums, sax etc. The original lineup with Lindup, King, Gould brothers on drums and guitar started around the late 1970s . They were all born and raised on England's Isle of Wight
The first time I heard this song was back in 1981 at The Fun House Disco in New York city where DJ John Jelly bean Benitez would play it and I really ❤ it, 42 years later I'm still rocking this awesome jam that only gets even better with time truly a phenomenon!!
lovely story how Mike Lindup's parents met . His mother was of African descent, born & raised in a small UK country Belize (its just below mexico on the caribbean) . She was a singer and piano player . She came to England near the end of ww2 to study and also joined the women's section of the British Army . She played and sang for injured Allied soldiers in London . Mike's father, a very white englishman, did to . He was a big band leader, composer and music arranger. It was sort of love at first sight thing . They married and had mike and 2 other children . You could say Mike has music in his genes and was also nurtured by his musician parents
This was such a huge record in NYC when it dropped. Played on Kiss FM and WBLS. Breakdanced to it. Roller skated to it in Central Park. The vibes this song gave off were incredible.
Yes!! Same here... I actually scrolled until I found another Garage head, Lol... Ahh, those were the days, such amazing memories, same with The Loft... this is definitely one of my forever fave classics 💖💛💚💙💜🧡🤎
I still listen to this song weekly nearly 40 years after its release. Their debut album from which this song is taken is a british jazz funk classic and I am hoping for a 40th vinyl remastered re-issue. Would love to hear the original Wally Badarou demo. Does anyone have it? :)
One of my favourite level 42 tracks along with flying on the wings of love, I know they went on to have commercial success but anything after their 1st album The Early Tapes will never be as good, incidentally another track called Starchild was released by my favourite artist Teena Marie, another great tune
LOVE this song- Mike lundup in the old days looked like a morph between screech and Lionel Ritchie back when mike lindup used to be a black guy - haha - Level 42 early stuff is my favorite- beautiful track!
Gotta hand it to Mike getting that sucky reverse on that prophet 5,really moves ya feet, bet the electronics were red hot after that session.Wouldve liked to have got that sound amongst some slap lines from MK.
I was driving tonight ans the sun had gone down and this was playing. Surreal.
Genius.
Whos is still listening in 2024?

Level 42 is so underappreciated. These men are so brilliant. 💯
Been a fan since 1983 and still listen to their music each day. Even better live
There are certain songs that are timeless...This is certainly one of those.
Kev Sanders: Absolutely! And that after 41 years!...

Good music which unfortunately is not made anymore......................(sigh)
I agree 100 percent!
But there are a lot of synth funk bands?
Doesn't matter. There are racks and racks of vinyl from 1975 to 1982 (or so) that can be revisited!
Great and goosebump inducing music is still made, just not promoted in a big way.
BOOM on point
Love meeting love and Starchild my two favourite tracks by Level 42 before they went over to pop music.
