    After seeing this, I'm so happy that I have to empty my tank in the morning and wipe it dry. I don't fill it full at night, just usually to the first line. And according to myAir I have a good mask seal. I rarely ever run the tank bone dry and if I do it's because I've slept for 12 hours or more. I have my machine set for 3 humidity, 0 degrees for temp., and 6 lbs of pressure, and ramp of 45 mins. And I had NO events last night. Instead of 40 events per hour. It's working.

    I’m about 10 months into cpap. I’ve moved between the various hybrid nasal masks. In latest appt, I asked for the Evora hybrid FFM. Ofc stock was low so respiratory therapist gave me Evora hybrid nasal mask to try as she tried to talk me into allowing her to order a Dreamwear FFM. The Evora Nasal mask turned into such a disaster to the point I stopped using all masks for a week until I researched your videos, a couple cpap forums and blog sites more thoroughly. Because of my experience with the Evora nasal mask and my dislike of the elephant trunk the nasal and FFM both provide, I opted to go with the ResMed F30i. It’s been 3 weeks and I haven’t looked back since. But I appreciate your video. They provide a valuable source of information and entertainment.

    I've used the coverroll tape very successfully for several years now. It was a miracle for me. I have experienced the humidity problem you mention and I agree with everything you have said here. I go one step further and double tape. The first piece is about 9 increments long and I first place this piece vertically from the top of my mustache to the bottom of my chin. This vertical piece prevents chin drop. The second piece is a generous horizontal piece about 14 increments long. It is placed over the top of the vertical piece. Rarely, I still have to fix it in the middle of the night. I use about half my tank in the winter months when it is very dry in Montana, often with wood heat, and my mouth is comfortable. Before I fixed my leaks in this method dry mouth and empty tanks were common. My 16/33 AHI averages .5 with taping so it is well worth the small cost of tape. Your suggestions several years ago were instrumental in fixing my sleep and taping was the final piece of the puzzle.

While they weren't acceptable as masks, they work really well to keep my mouth closed by chinstrapping them to the top of my head. I use ice in my humidifier made from bottled water (haven't used distilled water in about 15 years or so). I can't fall asleep with hot air in my face and have my temp tube turned down to the coldest setting (I think 60 degrees). The ice gives me the cold air while I fall asleep and then once I'm sleeping I have no issues with it being warm humid air. I live in the desert so it's always dry here and any little bit of humidity you can feel right away.

    I use the Cover-Roll tape every night, however, I use a much smaller piece that just as a fraction of what you suggest. This tape does a great job keeping the lips completely closed without even having to tape skin outside of the lips. Just a suggestion for mouth taping. I would like to suggest trying hydrocolloid tape. There is a very thin one made to help prevent blisters, about the size of a first aid plaster and just as thin. Hydrocolloid plasters/patches are very gentle on skin and hold extremely well especially when they reach body temperature. The brand I had was made by Urgo but many others make them. Hope it helps someone.

I don’t tape my mouth closed anymore because it’s not necessary for me. I didn’t tape and didn’t have large mouth leaks. I started taping just to ensure I kept it closed for about a year but my mouth stays closed because I sleep with my fists balled up under my chin. It’s a rare thing.

    I think the absolute worst thing a person new to CPAP can do is to use their humidifier when they start. Luckily I had a friend and a co-worker both who were on cpaps and told me they never use their humidifiers. So I never did with mine when I got it about a year ago. All this time, I've never once regretted that decision. Had I started using it, I probably would be like everyone else is and feel like they can't use their CPAP unless the humidifier is on. It seems like most problems with cpaps involve the humidifier.

    Quick question on the distilled vs regular water thing, specifically for ResMed AirSense 11 with either the "white tab" or "gray tab" tub.
    Apparently, the "white tab" one can't use reg. water, only distilled, while the "gray tab" can use reg. water.
    Something about the metal part or some such thing.... ???
    So being new to all this and being very logical, would I be correct that how the humidity is created is that the little metal part at the bottom of the tub (either one) sits upon a heater and the water is heated to create steam?
    If that's right, then it should be safe to say that using reg. water, not distilled, should ONLY affect the bottom of the tub and the calcium buildup NOT find its way through the hose and into the machine itself?
    As we do have a distiller, I'll use distilled water, but it's good to understand what the true ramifications are if using tap water.

I do have an appt to get a dental appliance to stop jaw drop ( hopefully).

    Yeah, I stopped using my humidifier outright too, I couldn't stand constantly running dry and now honestly, my mouth is less dry now not using it than it was when actually using it! Crazy how that works. Side note, I use the Resmed F20 airtouch so not nasal, but still seems somewhat relevant. Thank you for taking the time to make this video, super informational!

  • @busigh
    @busigh ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Hi Jason. As always an informative video. I have to take issue with two points however. You are correct that one does not HAVE to use distilled water, they don't even have to use the machine, but there are consequences. Regular water has minerals etc in it and using this water causes scaling on the walls of the water chamber , even if you empty the remaining water every morning. In the same manner that you would not use regular water in your electric steam iron . Distilled water has most of these minerals etc removed so it takes months more for any scaling to appear.
    The other issue is you saying that patients do not even need to use it. Very dangerous statement. Your mouth and your airway DOES need moisture. Not using a humidifier may cause issues with mouth, gums, etc.. Take a page from ICU ventilators, always use humidifiers.
    Keep up the good work.

    • @eddiememphis1
      @eddiememphis1 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      If it was dangerous, why are there CPAPs that do not have humidifiers and why would one be able to turn it off on models that do have them? How do people that live in desert climates that don't use CPAPs survive? A CPAP is not an ICU ventilator. Ventilators mechanically move air in and out of the lungs, breathing for the patient. A CPAP is a pneumatic splint, helping to hold the airway open while the user breathes on his own.
      Air is naturally humidified during natural breathing as the air passes through the nose or mouth. The upper airway provides 75% of the heat and moisture supplied to the alveoli. When bypassed, the humidifier needs to supply this missing heat and moisture. Humidity during "invasive mechanical ventilation" (intubation) is recommended. During noninvasive (mask) it is suggested for patient comfort.

      I’ve had more than one sleep technologist tell me that a humidifier is not needed. I stopped using my humidifier about a year and a half ago and couldn’t be happier. I’ve never had any kind of sort of issues in my mouth and I tape my mouth and I never wake up with a dry mouth. It’s awesome not to have a water reservoir to clean every day.

    • @af1966
      @af1966 ปีที่แล้ว

      Regular water does have minerals in it and ResMed makes two types of water tubs. One that you can use tap water in the other one for distilled water only and this is concerns the AirSense 11.

    • @busigh
      @busigh ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @af1966 Thanks for that information. Regardless of what Resmed may say the reality is that heating regular drinking water or the water from the pipe at home will create scaling in the water chamber if you use the heat settings. Depending on how hard your water is will determine over what time this occurs. That's just science, not me.

      @ronabramson3910 Thanks for that information. True story, my neighbour had a chest pain and a doctor was called late that night. Doctor diagnosed heart burn/acid reflux, prescribed appropriate medication and left. Less than an hour later my neighbour was dead from a heart attack. And it wasn't from the doctor's bill. Please do your research. There is a world of information at our finger tips much of it incorrect but some very accurate. I shared what I know to be correct simply for others to benefit. I also appreciate the input and the fact that others query and question rather than just swallow the information without question. Always do your checks.

    Just started using AirSense 11. When my pressure goes up to 17, which is not unusual for me, I wake up early with the disgusting empty humidifier tank smell. It's not because of leaks -- I know what open mouth makes me feel like in the morning -- so I think it's most likely the pressure. For the time being, until I can afford a Cspring, I'll just sleep with the humidifier off.

    Jason! I use a F30 small and my tank is dry every morning. I have my humidity on 5 and 79°. I have very minimal leaks with my mask (3 nights out of 30). I've been trying to figure out ways to fix this. I have tried the Evora FFM and like it except it digs into my cheek bone with an x-small cushion. What would you suggest next for the dryness?

    • @BLenz-114
      @BLenz-114 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm also using an F30, and take meds that give me dry mouth, so I have my Humidity at 6 or 7. And like you I have very small leak rates (I can't stand it when it leaks). The tank was running dry every night so I had to set an alarm for 3 am to refill. It SUCKED.
      I ended up buying a CSpring tank refiller that keeps your tank full for you automatically. It's not a perfect device, I have a few issues with it, but it does the job. It's pricier than I think it ought to be ($250) but it beats waking up to refill every night (and thus irritating the wife). If $250 is within your reach, I'd take a look at it.

    Hey Jason - I have a FFM (F20), no leaks (according to Oscar), and no matter what level of humidity I use (Resmed Airsense 10) I'm always horrendously dry mouthed (like desert-so) in the morning... why would this be? I've tried all humidity levels - have been suffering like this for probably 2 years now, it's bad because the dry mouth wakes me and keeps me awake which defeats the object. My chamber is usually about 75% used by morning, sometimes the mask is full of condensation too but I'm still bone dry. Also, just as an aside you say about mineral deposits not forming if you change the water every day - I do change it and still have horrendous mineral deposits which I have to clean once a month or so with descaler... kind of accept this just as routine maintenance though.
