So my moronic medical device provider replaced my old Fisher Paykel with an Airsense 11 without the climate control & wifi options on the unit. Horrible dry mouth using a full face mask. I'll try the mouth tape. Thank you Nick.

That’s much easier said than done. When I was first diagnosed I was fitted for my mask at the doctor’s office by a licensed respiratory therapist.
Now, I am pretty much on my own.
I have heard the automated messages so many times I can recite them.
      I needed blepharoplasty for glaucoma.
Then a strip cut from my forehead I had been using the Dreamwear unicorn 🦄 connection over the head.
As to be expected this pulled hair from my head, having to push it further back.
Also, nerve pain in my forehead and hairline.
I was fitted for a full face mask, it caused my nose to be in a red circular pattern.
Much like the pig 🐽 snout people RN and doctor from ‘The Twilight Zone’
      This mask had a 90
      day factory warranty.
With the understanding it has to be returned by the supply house.
The receptionist was horribly rude, and terribly OBNOXIOUS!
Actually had the nerve to ask if I had worn it?!
HELLLLLL O! I didn’t take it home to admire it through the plastic packaging.
She told me,”then we can’t take it back!”
As she smugly amused herself on the company computer without a mask.
The warranty specifically stated it has to be returned by the supply warehouse.
It behooved her to put on a mask 😷 and 🧤🧤s to place it in plastic or a Ziplock bag.
She called the ‘supposed respiratory therapist’ warehouse manager, and other receptionist to watch her make a total @$$ of herself in an arena type setting.
Then told me I would be eligible for a new mask in two months if I wanted to wait.
The insurance was billed nearly $150, then I had to pay $100 out of pocket for another type of nasal mask.
That did the same red 🐽 resemblance before the oxygen connection broke 2 days later.
I called my doctor’s RN she set me up with yet another idiot.
That had no clue what she was doing.
I went back to wearing the old, first hair tearing, nerve throbbing outdated one.
I called yet another supply house that had me call. My pulmonologist 4 times; each time needing another fax history.
I was then greeted by a beast that told me to go on~line to a virtual mask fitting.
At their office 20-25 miles from my place.
      I think not.
I will make do with the expensive trash I was “FITTED” for NOT!
If everything is going to be done virtually.
Get rid of the warehouses, joke professionals and have virtual everything.
      Then shipped through Amazon.
      RIDICULOUS and EXPENSIVE!

I have been a CPAP user for 10 years and about 5 years ago got the nasal prong mask because it was so compact and less cumbersome. I developed a lot of sinus problems and went through hell with nasal and sinusitis. I had to discover on my own that it was all caused by the nasal prong mask. I got a full face ,ask and have not sneezed since. The oxygen company or respirologist had not heard of this. I suffered greatly. It was too much pressure on the nasal cavity and everything became irritated and inflamed. Take your health in your own hands people.

I had nasal surgery around 6 wks ago. I usually use a mask cushion but I couldn't breath because of my surgery, so I started using a full face mask. Around a week ago I went back to my cushion but I started having problems with dry mouth & breathing thru mouth. Played with the humidifier (even got rainout a few times) but still had the problem, so I was thinking of going back to full face mask, but then I watched this video and I lowered the pressure, which I had raised b/c of surgery & using full mask. After watching this video I decided to lower the pressure to where I had it pre-surgery & I slept good last night. No dry mouth this morning & I don't remember breathing thru mouth, and EVENTS were at 1.1 an hour. Thank you my Aussi friend! I hit the like & subscribe buttons.

I bet the toothpaste is the GC MI Paste Plus. A friend recommended it to me and I purchased it at a dentist office. 25.00 for a small tube but should last a long time. What I was told to do was smear a small dollop of the Paste over my teeth before bed. Do not rinse out. Also use Biotene dry mouth gel on tongue. I find this helps. Plus I use a chin strap with my nose pillow mask.

Since I watched this video several days ago I've been using a medical paper tape and it works! Those tape strips on Amazon are a bit expensive although they have some cheaper alternatives. Your videos are very helpful in getting the most out of my CPAP machine. I watched your video on how to adjust the clinical settings, which helped reset my wife's from CPAP to Autoset. Her's was set to CPAP pressure of 9. When she was in the hospital recently they set the machine on Autoset 4-9 and it worked perfectly! After resetting her machine she sleeps better. We both have the ResMed AirSense 10. I've tried using a chin strap and it doesn't keep my mouth closed so the tape is perfect!

  • @douglasgrose7700

Great information. My only comment in relation to dry mouth is that (in my opinion and experience) the majority of dry mouth is due to the pressure being too high. My technique was to progressively reduce the pressure until I consistently had no dry mouth but still a very good AHI score. The other point I would make is the reason for pressure being the problem is your tongue. Try opening your mouth and then put your tongue up on the roof of your mouth. Note that when you breath in or out the air only moves through your nose. As soon as you move your tongue away from the roof of your mouth air will flow in and out you mouth. So, if you have your mask on and air coming in through you nose at high pressure the tongue cannot maintain the seal on the roof of your mouth so the air, instead of going to your lungs, goes out though your mouth and dries out your mouth. I am not convinced that a chin strap helps with dry mouth. The air will still come out through your mouth despite the strap if the pressure is high enough (I have one and use it but I am not convinced it helps). The way to fix the problem is reduce the air pressure until the dry mouth stops but your other indicators such as AHI are still good.

I just wanted to pop in and say that I struggled at first. I'm also a sleep talker in addition to someone with a severely deviated septum and osa, BUT I'm still able to use a nasal pillow mask. Oddly enough it seems that I've subconsciously trained myself to close off my soft palate when I'm sleep talking so the air doesn't rush out unless I make certain nasal sounds. (I partially wake on occasion so I'm aware but unable to control what I'm doing, which is how I know.) The best advice I have is to wear your mask before bed. Lay in bed and watch tv or read a book for an hour. Just get used to wearing it and breathing normally. That's what my sleep specialist recommended and I found it to be most helpful. It also helps any initial swelling you may have to start to go back down.

You can blame that on Medicare and the insurance companies. I had a nice person, a respiratory therapist who worked for the vendor. He came to the house and fitted me with masks and really helped me. Then Medicare decided to reduce their benefits and the respiratory therapist job was eliminated. So now we all have to figure it all out outselves.

Cheers from the states! I really enjoyed your video. I always refer to myself as a mouth breather so that part of your video really resonated with me because it's in line with what my doctor said. He said I can use the nasal pillows even though I was skeptical because as a mouth breather I felt it wouldn't work. My mouth and jaw relaxes and I sleep with my mouth open at night. I never did until about 6 years ago or so. I tried the chin strap and its too uncomfortable. I have used the mouth tape and I much prefer that. My doctor is switching me from the Amara View face mask to the nasal pillows and I'll use the mouth tape. My doctor thinks eventually I won't need to use the mouth tape as I learn to breathe through my nose at night. I am always so very tired all the time and rarely go into REM where I have dreams. I miss being able to dream and they are very rare now for me. Thanks for your video. It was very good and helpful.

I have used a c-pap for over 10 years. I have yet to find a full-face mask that doesn't leak if I move, even slightly. I use a nasal pillow mask now and I use breathe-rite strips to keep my mouth shut. I am a total mouth breather and so this is the only way I can get rest. I use both the Biotene Spray and the Gel. Then I coat my lips with a moisturizing stick, like Vaseline. I cut the strips in half (the long way) to make the box last twice as long. It has worked great for me for many years.

Even at the lowest levels my lips release air and I end up welding my mouth together! Took me awhile to figure out why chin straps didn't work! I use tape to hold the mouth shut. Also in my case, warm moist air actually congests me. I haven't used additional humidity in years and find sleeping much more comfortably. I think you just have to try both ways.

I am in Canada and I have been told I need a neck brace type of thing as my chin drops when I sleep and blocks my breathing even with my CPAP on. Also I have been getting air in my stomach not just in my lungs yet I need the high pressure as in the titration study they said that my sleep apnea was severe and they had a hard time getting me to sleep without my breathing stopping. My AHI was 85.2/hr on avg.

Thank you Nick. I very much appreciate your CPAP insights. I found your channel about 6 months ago and I’ve been using CPAP for over 5 yrs. Now I’m getting educated on how to get the most out of my therapy.
I thought the same thing, I’m a mouth breather because I have frequent bouts with hay fever. Since I’ve been using CPAP with humidity, I have had fewer issues with this. I’ll be trying an AirFit P10 soon. I hope I can get used to it. Sounds like it will increase my comfort and therapy will be more successful.
    Thanks again! 😊👍🙏

First time using a CPAP Machine was a life changing experience. I felt rested and stopped snoring completely.
Before using the machine I would snore the house down, having hundreds of events each night, racing heart beat, panic attacks, and an experted heart attack.
Since getting the machine I have had none of these issues. Can't recommend it enough.

    FYI Dry Mouth problem
I was using a "Sleep Guard" to help me stop snoring before I was diagnosed with sleep apnea. I had dry mouth and last few night I tried my "Snore No More" mouthpiece. This lets you breathe thru the small hole if need be but it prompts you to breathe thru your nose. I use a Phillips Nasal Pillow and had dry mouth.ˆ tried mu snore guard as well and easier to breath thru your nose, no "Blow Back" thru the mouth and no dry mouth. A 100% improvement in all aspects and had a 05 breathing interruptions/hr in a 8.5 hr sleep. Snore Guard cast about $25.00 and work wonders. Definitely worth a try for those with the problem and not uncomfortable at all.

I don't really consider myself a mouth breather, though. At least not during the day. Now that I have to stop therapy due to the Respironics Recall my mouth is way more dry in the mornings than it ever was when using the therapy.

Have been using various ResMed masks for a few years now and have had a F20 for a while and it has been great. Stopped the leaks and dry mouth and has been very comfortable. Also works well when you have a cold and a blocked nose, so you can keep up the therapy. Love your vids and no nonsense approach of telling things as they are.

I have to use a full face mask. Before CPAP I had so much problems with dry mouth that I had to keep a Halls cough drop in my mouth. When you wake up the drop has binded with membranes and irritates the lining. I also tried those dry mouth lozenges that attach inside your mouth. They never stay attached all night. Have always had issues with one side of nose clogging up. The full face mask is no bargain if you sleep on your side. It gets leaks. The CPAP does work. Even though my sleep is terrible and I wake up constantly I don't wake up from those suffocating dreams where adrenaline kicks and you wake up in a panic. You literally can't fall asleep after those happen. Have to watch TV or sit in front of a computer waiting for your body to enter a relaxed state again so you can fall back to sleep. It's amazing how many places your mind can think of to put you in a trapped state in your dreams.

I am a chronic mouth breather and use a full face mask Quattro Air with my PR Dreamstation Auto BIPAP. My AHI was consistently in the mid teens which is not desirable.
I started applying a strip of 3M Micropore tape over my lips at night, 2” wide tape by 3” long. My AHI dropped immediately and significantly and my weekly AHI is now averaging 0.6, in fact several nights of 0.0 which is amazing. Why I waited 6 years to try this simple solution is beyond me.
Some people complain about too sensitive skin but I put lip balm on my lips prior to applying tape to area above and below the lips. Tape is somewhat hard to remove but just pull slow and steady. No tape residue.

Currently I found your videos because my Phillips machine has been recalled and I am trying to find a good replacement. And, I didn't know that I could adjust the pressure, thought it had to be at the prescription level. On another note, I don't if it is true, but I had wear a 24 hr EKG monitor, the tech congratulated me for coming out of my coma, apparently by pulse dropped to 16 BPM during sleep. This is the not sure if it's true part, I credit my CPAP for keeping enough oxygen in my system to keep me alive.

After the recall of the Phillips I switched to a ResMed and still using the same nasal cushion style. The ResMed was a HUGE mistake!! The humdifier is set on 8 out of 8 settings. It has a heated tube. Even though my episodes are 1.0 or less Im sleeping with my mouth open more and constantly waking up with a dry mouth and many times it feels like my lips are stuck to my gums. Great tips and advice! I'm now trying out a cervical collar to keep my airway from closing. The chin strap and the mouth strips don't work for me when my chin goes to my chest - my mouth still dries out. I tend to curl up in a fetal position when sleeping and that causes my airway to close, I think. The cervical collar keeps my neck straight and my mouth mostly shut. I may use the mouth strips too and may also have to lower the pressure on the cpap. Humidity helped my nose open up a little.

Thoughts on somno seal? I too fell victim to the “mouth breather” syndrome and listened to people online saying nasal pillows don’t work for mouth breathers. Tried a full face mask which was awful then switched to a hybrid which was better but still not great. I tend to drool so I’d wake up with drool everywhere. I just recently got a nasal pillow and so far love it, although it has took some adjusting. I do still have occasional air leaks though and do have some drool still. I ordered a somno seal to see if that in conjunction with tape may help. I have an underbite so chin straps don’t work and I don’t want to depend solely on mouth tape since I have facial hair

When I run the Mask Fit on the machine, it says the fit/Seal is good. But then the report says 5 out of 20 which is a poor fit with leakage. I can confirm how having too high a air pressure going in through the nose can disrupt sleep. After a major surgery, I had to go into rehab for some therapy. Since I was there for several days and nights they requested that I bring my hose and mask with me. They provided the air pumping machine. Unfortunately their machine was set at a much higher pressure than my home machine was. I finally convinced them to take it down to 6 lbs. which was what my Doctor has prescribed rather than the 15 lbs they had it set at. I finally was able to get some sleep without feeling like my head was going to be blown off.

Hi Nicko! Started on a FFM in March and hated it. For some reason when I started CPAP therapy my natural inclination was to put my tongue on the roof of my mouth with the tip of the tongue behind the two front teeth. I never had dry mouth. Transitioned to nasal masks and started taping more as an insurance policy than actual need as I am a nose breather but was concerned about snoring as it completely stopped on Day One of therapy. Recently I started using a Caldera Releaf Neck Rest and stopped using tape. After two weeks I quit using the neck rest and my mouth has stays shut. I understand the struggle others have and feel very, very lucky! 🍀
Also, I live in a high desert region where it is dry as a bone and keep my humidifier set at 4 and believe it or not lightly swab the inside of my nose with extra virgin olive oil on the recommendation of my ENT. Nostrils and sinus areas stay moisturized and I hardly sneeze any longer. Love that doc and that suggestion was amazing.
    Cheers mate!

Been on bipap therapy for 15 years. Just got my 3rd machine, resmed s10. Had my s9 for 9 years. Each machine has been worse than the last. Originally my condition was so severe I had to have an oxygen concentrator connected to my bipap. When my first machine stopped I’d lost 80 pounds and the study showed I no longer needed oxygen. But I’ve never slept nearly as well I did when I used it. My s9 is still functional, but did another study recently because I lost another 80 pounds for a total of 160 lost. Study showed my pressure actually went up and not down. Two weeks into trying to use new machine and I am miserable, exhausted all day. It saved my life I know, but it’s pretty crazy to have been on therapy 15 years and want to give up at this point. I have the humidifier and hose turned all the way up and airflow still seems cold. 3800 for the new one. Will just go back to my old one tomorrow probably.

I made a chin strap out of an arm tourniquet with a bit of padding at the chin point. Infinitely adjustable, with a quick release clip and works a treat. I'm going to give the tape a try too.

I got a neoprene chin strap very much like the first style you showed. I didn’t want to do it but mouth-breathing was a problem so I had to fix it. It really worked well. I found that it actually is comfortable. Yes, it’s weird but wearing a mask is weird in the first place. I highly recommend it.

If you want to try an improvised chinstrap, use one of those bandanna type face masks. Pull it on the front part of your face, then fold it over a couple of times until it holds your chin in place. You might need to try a couple of different styles in order to get the right fit, but it does work.

Thanks for sharing. I am one of those patients who has developed a bad habit of breathing through my mouth. I do use a full face mask but find I chew the bottom of the mask. I’m on my 5th mask now. I duped try the nasal cannula type but found that I ended up mouth breathing again. Now I see you referring this tape which I’ve not heard of before. Nor have I heard of the chin strap. These are definitely items worth checking into. Thank you for the information.

The auto on heated tube makes me congest as I have allergic rhinitis so standard setting with humidity on 4 and heat on 82 F....works for me.

    Hi Nick!
I constantly have my jaw drop when I sleep, causing mouth leaks. I tried a chin strap and couldn’t get it to comfortably work. I also tried a cervical soft collar that seemed to work in the beginning, but it’s no longer working. I tried adding mouth tape with the cervical collar, but then my cheeks fill up with air, waking me up repeatedly through the night. How do I stop the air from filling my cheeks?!

Before going to bed, I use Flonase and take a 12 hour Sudafed to help open my nasal passages. I also found running an electric razor under my nose and shaving the area right before bed to get rid of stubs that causes some irritation using my "pillow", really helps too. Just some tips to throw out to the group.

I need to use Flonase. My allergies are changing my great experience with pillow mask to forced mouth breathing. I added the mouth tape and lasted longer especially if I was sleepy. I used to do 5 or 6 hours 3 months ago and one time ten. I felt like a new person. After many many years of telling my doctor I am always tired and would sleep at lunch in my car to make it through, a doctor heard me 30 years later. I'm a hard core insomniac that must take prescription drugs together.

Great information Nic. I’ve been using mouth tape for the past few months and they do work wonders! I love the nasal pillow so much more than a full face mask.

Hi Nick, its me again from Jamaica.Just an update.I switched from a full face mask to a nasal "air touch cushion" together with a mouth seal.It helped with my dry mouth a lot.Still a little dry but now manageable. Also as you said I am adjusting to possibly not having to use the mouth seal.Tried a few nights without it and things look promising. Finally, went to my dentist worried about the dry mouth and possible resulting cavities but had none.Again thanks so much for your help and guidance and hope what I have shared will give those who still have dry mouth challenges encouragement not to give up.Cheers, Mate!😅.

I’ve used chinstraps for years now. This is the first I’m hearing about mouth tape. I’m going to buy some and test it out. Thank you.

Love your videos, wishing I had found you sooner than a week or so ago. I’m a 20 year APAP wearer, nasal mask with chin strap. I was doing “ok” until the last 6 mos or so. I had another study last week and I did pretty good with the hybrid nasal/mouth mask. So much more freedom the way it’s made & tubing at the top of my head. After 3 nights tho, I’m having such a dry mouth, but my O2 saturation is on point compared to 70’s & 80’s.😢
I’ll try the tape. I have contact dermatitis tho & don’t do well with adhesive. Tonight I’m going to try chin strap with the hybrid mask.
What brand chin strap is that in this video?
Also, not everyone apparently is trainable and I have high pressure with a deviated septum, with no plans for surgery for that!
