You make it look so easy with a clean garage, lift, pole jack, snap on tools and non seized bolts. Mine didn't go as smoothly but your walkthrough helped ;)
I would’ve never thought of dropping the front bushing of the rear lower control arm! The amount of time it saves! I’ve been replacing the struts without dropping it. What a hassle!
I love the woman mechanic in the 1A Auto videos for the Honda CRV. She makes it look so easy, All i need now is to trade in my driveway for a garage with a lift.
Very important that you remove the assembly tab on the top of the Honda original struts, this tab locks the strut in place during the assembly process. It is not possible to remove the strut without removing the tab. Other than the wrong bolt sizes great video, help a lot
Alright. I’ve watched this video 3 x. I just ordered the parts via you guys on 9/27. Hope this works for my daughters 08 CRV. I’ll provide update in the next couple of weeks.
Hopefully you don’t have any shipping delays…I look forward to the update. I plan to do this using floor jacks sometime in the near future, and your input will be appreciated. Good luck!
Thanks for the video. One correction as it is a safety issue. @ 16.43 in the video it mentions the incorrect torque for those trailing arm bushing bolts. It should be 84.6 lb-ft per the manual or just round it up to 85 lb-ft...............again thank you for the awesome step by step video.

I just did this over the weekend, and this method ended up being the easiest, especially when it comes to putting the bottom bolt back in the lower shock mount. This is not designed very well and could have been easier with a better design. Fortunately, my rear shocks lasted about 160,000 miles. If you power wash before you get in there you would be surprised how clean it can be R.A.
Yeah, my '09 just rolled over 160k too! I think I should have changed the shocks a few thousand miles ago though because it feels like I'm driving on a trampoline. Left side done- need to do the right side tonight!
This woman is very good…wish she could work on my Honda CR-V..I need all 4 struts to be replaced and I need to hire a mechanic that knows what their doing..
Is it possible to use a spring compressor to replace the strut without removing the control arm bolts and not lowering the control arm? after Honda did the rear subframe repair the bracket for the repair goes over the front bolt of the control arm requiring removing the entire recall repair bracket in order to lower the control arm.
If you have difficult struts like I had that was really snug where the bottom bolt goes it's easiest to disconnect that arm on the top of the spindle then the 2 lca bolts while being supported with a jack. It gives you so much more play. To reconnect the top arm just jack up underneath the spindle until the strut compresses enough to get the bolt through after you put the lca bolts back in
when removing old honda shocks, there are tabs that make it very difficult to remove shocks. You can remove 6 nuts from each side and bend that tab upwards to make removing the shocks easier. Check out the TRQ video of this on more detail
Good video but instead of taking the control arm bolts all the way out like you did I'm just gonna back them out almost to the end so i can zip them back on and not fight with them to get them back in
Man i hope that works for my seconds side; I just replaced my rear passenger side and cant for the life of my get the control arm bolts back on. I have tried multiple different jacks, angles, etc and i can't seem to get things to line up right, managed to cross thread both bolts and i am worried i need to tap the holes now. Not sure how to even get my car out of my garage if it turns out this is above my skill set! 💩😤🥺
Excellent video, I've got this job to do on my CR-V, unfortunately the previous owners garage fitted the wrong strut to my car. In the UK 🇬🇧 we have the option for Xenon lights. As part of the automatic headlight leveling system there is a sensor the bolts to a bracket that is welded to the rear strut. The rear strut on mine doesn't have the bracket and they just left the sensor arm hanging free. For reference the Honda part number for my 2007 Mk3 strut is 52611SWAE02. Happy spannering 🔧
FYI - Honda had a recall for the control arm connection to the frame due to rust - it is a terrible band aid they came up with! You might have to update this portion of your video, Honda now added a few more terrible steps....
At minute six, why did you release tension on the control arm before finishing to remove the lower strut mounting bolt? You put a lot more tension on the bolt to remove it
I have a 2011 honda CRV. My car shakes when I accelerate. I’ve noticed looking from the rear the driver side rear looks like it’s sagging really bad and wondering if it’s prob the strut is locked up or frozen up it doesn’t give any bounce when going over speed bumps or or RR crossings
Thanks for the video. A side question: if a rear strut needs to be replaced, would tire wear appear on the inside or the outside of the tire? Thanks in advance.
2008 CRV: The bottom of my strut has a linkage that I didn't see in this video. The linkage is just under the coil spring itself and goes to a thin plate. On that plate there is a type of sensor with some wires running to it. Does anyone know what this is because mine appears to have a bad stress crack in it; maybe due to the bad strut.
I agree. Bushings should be tightened in the static position, meaning, as though the car was on the ground with the weight of the car on them. I just did this job and put a block under the suspension and lowered the car until the weight was on it and then tightened the lower shock bolt.
+Raider Alex We don't have a how-to video for your vehicle right now, but the basic steps in this video should be enough to do this task. Thanks for checking us out! 1AAuto.com
Can you actually install them incorrectly? Other than torquing them without a load on them? I installed mine on My Honda Element and the bushings already look like they are trying to tear.
wow thanks -- so only two things I would correct ... 1. AN IMPACT WRENCH is your best friend, cut the time down by 1/2 .... 2. When they say the shocks come with 14mm nuts what they mean is 15mm ... no worries though ....A racing FLOOR jack is your best friend - unless there is someone to help push things out of your way to remove and put back new springs - you need 3 hands ...
Strut has been installed wrong way round. The tab on the top mount should face outwards and the end of the coil at the bottom of shock should face inwards.
Good video, however you guys should really do these videos how most of us would repair a vehicle. Using a regular jack to lift the vehicle. Furthermore, you should do it with vehicles that ARENT BRAND NEW or HAVENT BEEN DETAILED prior to the work you are showing.
Send that tool to me I fix it for you or give you some advice. Contact your local machine shop sometime its cheaper than a new tool. I know what you mean about "special" got my grandpa's tools and no one touches them no one but me and my uncle Bob
There is a problem in using impacts though. Even if I wasn't a professional mechanic, I wouldn't let most mechanics touch my car because of that. Impacts should rarely ever be used, especially in regular service. Unless you are working on older vehicles frame, steering box, large trucks, etc...and still really only for bolts with 1/2" shaft or larger.
My son and I did this all by hand on the weekend in our garage. I've seen too many cowboys with impacts booger up simple jobs and cross-thread important stuff and scratch up rims etc. Drills have their place- but sometimes finesse is required.

Thanks for very nice clear video. Is it common that the bottom of the struts rusted like that?
What is the model name and number of the telescopic jack stand used in the video?
You make it look so easy with a clean garage, lift, pole jack, snap on tools and non seized bolts. Mine didn't go as smoothly but your walkthrough helped ;)
true! the seized bolts are a big pain that adds hours to the job
It's painful watching you use hand tools to remove the fasteners but I appreciate that you do it to better show the repair. Thanks!

How hard or easy it this to do on the floor with jack stands?
