I found you when I started hearing about rucking a month ago. Now I got my wife into it and bought a plate carrier after watching all your videos. Super motivating too push myself as an all around athlete and looking cool at the same time 😎
Yeah after serving 16 yrs and in the army reserve (should of join national guard SF), I have issues with my archillie both left and right… been hitting the gym and running with assault pack with 35lb…. Still doing 11 minute 2 miles run as 4o yrs old. Hooya and hoora…. Still hoping to get back in 😭
Started implementing this training about 4 months ago and let’s just say has been best decisions ever made. Definitely improves mental toughness. It’s also very wise start on soft ground or low distance. 3-4 months in find it difficult run without vest, I’m very curious how much distance I can endure with vest so now I’m searching videos find more individuals that run with vest. 🤣
I go for hikes and do the stairs in my apartment building up and down with my 30# plate carrier, 3-4 times up and down 25 stories. Great workout and always feel like a machine first couple laps anyway, lol. Going to start working on some jogging with the carrier too. Keep up the great videos, very inspiring.
Not a military guy myself, but I've been running consistently for thirteen years and was competitive for the four years in university cross country and track & field. One thing my coach emphasized that has helped avoid knee and other joint pain is being mindful of my form and foot striking. What works for me (which may not work fir everyone else) is making sure that my foot lands directly beneath or just ever so slighty ahead of my center of mass for the next stride. I try to keep the weight of the front of my foot or in the middle of my foot, and avoid heel striking - even going as far as consciously keeping my heel from touching the ground at all. Last thing I think of when my foot hits the ground for striding forward is clenching my butt muscles - it sounds weird but it takes the tension away from my knees.
Ive been running with a plate carrier for a few years now. The thing that makes me consider the benefits is the fact that I'm still in the military. The only situation i can think of where i am going to be running in a real situation is while im in body armor, so I might as well get my body use to it before then. Plus the calorie burn is a good benefit.
My little guy ALWAYS expects to get held and we tried this and it’s so convenient. He only likes forward facing and is so happy to be in it and is so comfortable for him he even falls asleep!
To reduce overall wear and tear I recommend using hills and carefully sprinting over the cardio-focused jogging you see here. More bang for the buck strength-wise. If you want cardio just ride your bike on those same hills for 30min.
I only use mine for push-up, dips, and squats. Also, I 100% agree with you regarding disc injury. It’s funny because the army tells us not to run with a ruck sack, but they’ll gladly allow this. It’s not beneficial long term, hence why one of the major injuries in the military is back/hip.
Well, thats the thing about a vest. It puts weight on both the back and the front. Its balanced. Disk injuries happen when the disk is stressed unevenly on a constant basis. I really dont remember sensing any risk for disk injury being probbable when I was getting my military training. I think knees are more at risk.

8 year AD US Army. Ran with a plate carrier today about 5 miles and my knees HURT! Felt like my plate carrier was wrapped right but I felt a lot of bouncing and rubbing, especially on my neck. My question is, what kind of carrier do you have/recommend?
I use the 5.11 TacTec. If you don’t run with a p/c often, you should try to build up to distance, and run on a soft surface (dirt). Also, start slow to focus on you landing with your strides, p/c running should be a killer Gastroc (calf) workout. Don’t try to rush into it or you’ll end up with shin splint and hurt knees.
Great content! I’ve been running in boots, pants, ruck and/or plate carrier since 1990 (I’m 51). These days it’s - Salomon Quest 4 boots (super firm support because I’m starting to get arthritis in my big toe joint), - Kuhl pants - t-shirt - Ferro Concepts FCPC plate carrier - Ferro Concepts bison belt (Safariland ALS holster, 1 kywi 556 mag pouch, 2 kywi 9mm pouches, ifak, multi-tool, & helo lanyard) Runs are in town (no I don’t have any weapons or mags on me). Great workout. I do it this way because it’s what I work in. If I have to run, I’ll be running in that, so I train in that setup.
First thanks for all your content and another informative video! In the past i tried running with heavy weight and had somewhat disastrous results. Those were the days before cell phones. Just some thoughts: walk before you run. Shuffle then trot in place of running with moderate to heavy ruck or plate carrier weights. We all could take some lessons from Rosa Mota. By that I mean you can get a good foot, soleus, and gastrocnemious workout or a very good one, but that great workout just may lead to foot or leg injury and much loss of training time. So if you don't have to put all that stress on the feet and calves, why do it. So what I'm saying is run more efficiently with less vertical displacement. Less toeoff. Opt for a midfoot foot strike as opposed to more forward, on toes, and definitely NOT the crippling severe heel strike with toes high at impact, which is almost always an indication of overstriding and results in something like a order of magnitude greater sheering forces on knees and hips, leading some to say it isn't running that destroys knees and hips but bad running. With greater load in body weight and/or carry weight, the stress on joints and feet are just that much greater. So I guess we must all start by knowing ourselves, cognizant of current limits and investing some time mentally in what works before field expedient application.
The hoplitodromos was an ancient Greek foot race where the athletes would wear armour and carry a great big hopolite shield around the Olympic stadium. Think of them when you run with a 20lb plate vest

I’ve been in SOF since 1990 and agree wholeheartedly with Jon - don’t run with weight at your age. Reason is your bones growth plates aren’t closed yet and stress applied via weighted runs can cause deformation & damage your bone growth.
