    Culture and language are so intrinsically linked! I think this can be hard for western English speakers to grasp. There are a lot of people in the Korean classes I have taken who don't show adequate respect to our teacher, complain constantly about the concept of social hierarchies, or talk about how "weird" things are in Korean culture. Not only can that sort of closed mindedness be rude, but it is ultimately going to greatly hinder your language learning experience. I started learning Korean /because/ I was interested in Korean culture. So it's these links I appreciate and get excited about.
    For example: I struggle a lot less than my peers with formality levels because I've made an effort to understand /why/ formality exists and creating a mindset shift around that. I understand and most importantly, accept, where I fit in a Korean social hierarchy. Of course, within an American context I think in a more egalitarian way but when interacting in and with Korean culture I've allowed my mind to switch in and out of Korean me versus American me (culture wise). So it's easier for me to access the right honorific words or sentence endings I need.

    The formality one is so true. You need to very carefully while using some words. I need it's better to avoid using a word if you're not sure about its application. Also we need to do a bit research bout the language and it's history culture, not like you need to remember the facts but get familiar with how it works.
    A free advice from my side is don't set time bounded goals in language learning because it's a subjective thing. I learned Hanguel in just 5 to 6 hours but other person may need more or less time. So just set goals but don't set a time like i will learn these vocabs in 3 days, or some topic in x time.
    Im happy to hear you're safe and sound. Take care. Good points👍

    i am in this kind of special point in learning a language process, where you actually can understand a lot, can read very well, and really know how to pronuance a full dialogue, but when it comes to trying to keep a live-conversation with somebody, just forget everything.
    even texting with korean friends it's more easier to me, than trying to talk a full conversation (not prepared like) so i'm in this part of the process where i'm actually advanced but can't go ahead .

    about he letting go of romanization tip^^
    I’m a beginner, I’ve been learning korean for 4ish days now and I only know a handful of words that i learnt within the past 2 days. I have the majority of Hangul memorized and I can read it pretty fluently. I highly recommend learning Hangul first because it’s very easy! Pronunciation is a little difficult but after a week you should 99.99% be able to get the hang of it! I’m glad that I didn’t hesitate or I bet I would’ve struggle a lot-

    I've only been studying for a few weeks now (I got into Korean because I wanted to better understand K-pop music and be able to sing along and know what I'm singing, the way I do with american music) and I am taking it probably really slow? I started with duolingo and really wanna nail down the hangul and be able to read it well so I can move on to speaking and stuff. Already I feel like it's gonna be a bit harder but I have my flashcards and I'm ready to try! But these tips and your other videos have been super helpful, I really appreciate the time and effort you took to craft these.

    Guys as she said, do not skip hangeul, after learning that the romanization was not really the sentence, i studied the hangeul, is so easy to understad, each "symbol" has a coresponding letter in the roman alphabeth, and once you know how to combine the blocks, you can basicly read everything. And you knowing how to read, the gramar will be easier. I'm not even 30% fluent, but is a must if you're starting to learn korean, do not go for romanizations, it just delay your learning. Great video, just met your chanel bc I needed a boost to keep my journey with korean, I started in 2017, but never really got in to it, i can understand some things, i could understand red velvet's speach in singapore, and i felt so happy, and you chanel poped im my you tube, thanks.
    Any english mistake, I'm sorry, english is not my language, and I learned by myself.

      Same. My teacher even mocks me, because she thinks I was saying I already know Korean when I told her I had studied for a year but didn't see Korean 102 available.
      She mocked me a few times and tried to embarrass me in class by asking me if I knew how to work "to be" in a sentence.
      Like,
      이에요 하고예요
      She literally sat next to me in class, took my partner, who likes to work through her problems first then share with me, and gave me a whole lecture about how if I don't participate I could possibly become bored and how she's worried about me and how since I was working ahead of the class, that she wasn't on that yet, even though I had already completed the lessons she wanted me to do.
      I was waiting for my partner to finish so that we could compare answers. We have worked together three times and I've quickly learned that she doesn't like to be thrown into things she isn't prepared for. She's really docile and shy, so I respect her space and we come together.
      I have made beginner mistakes too and my partner knows this, but the teacher assumed that I'm prideful because I stated that I studied Korean for a year and already knew how to say hello and to be, but would remain silent so that other students can have a chance to learn.
      Every now and then I speak up but the teacher didn't give me credit at all. She said I would get a bad grade for not participating.
      Tbh, it discouraged me. I wanted to drop the class but I don't want that on my school record.
      All I know is that, I refuse to take this class next semester, or I will choose a different teacher because I don't think that's right.

    One of the things that worries me the most is accidentally learning a wrong pronunciation, so whenever I'm unsure about the way a word is pronounced, or if the meaning is correct, I try and look it up in as many sources as I can. Despite the cautiousness, I'm also trying to be less self-conscious about my pronunciation. When I think to much about a way to pronounce something, I end up butchering it.

    I‘d like to add a tip for learning 한글;
    I‘ve seen so many people study the korean alphabet using table sheets like when studying japanese hiragana and katakana, going through every possible syllable like 가 갸 거 겨 (…) but I feel like it’s very inefficient, and it also takes lots of time to actually understand the single letters they actually are
    I‘d suggest to rather learn the letters on their own, just like you learned the English alphabet (or any alphabet with latin letters (i don’t know about too many alphabets - so i‘ll exclude them before saying something wrong hh) and then go on to learn how the blocks are put together. It’s so much faster and easier to learn 한글 this way rather than spending hours on memorizing a table with blocks as if they were solid characters like kanji or hanzi c:
    Edit: i just saw that this channel uploaded a video on how to learn 한글 as well :D it’s very nice

    • @shinydragon144
      @shinydragon144 ปีที่แล้ว

      You SHOULD learn that way to. Because table sheets are very EFFECTIVE for the fact off muscle memory for handwriting. Its mostly for handwriting and getting your brain and hand to memorize that….. 😒plus, everyone’s brain is programmed to learn differently. What might work for you might not for another. So what you think is “inefficient” is actually QUITE efficient for another. You sound very pretentious.

    I also really wish I knew that passive drama watching was not the way to go. I've been watching kdramas for about 10 years now and while I wasn't watching to learn Korean, I really wish I decided to actively try to learn the language within that time. After those years, I am able to understand basic to low intermediate materials and conversations from just my passive Korean drama watching and I can't help but imagine how much I would have learnt if I actively tried to learn the language from the get-go.

      There is nothing wrong with that method, actually it's a really good method. There are just people that can't stand k-drama's that's all and they find it weird.. which is quite.. weird..? Since they want to learn korean ? 😂
      most of people learning korean use kdramas and songs to learn the vocab and pronounciations etc. So don't worry about that. But I would recommand to watch korean cartoons that you can find easily on youtube or podcasts or there are also listening stories that you can find 😊
      The more ressources you have that you enjoy, the best it is ~ no one has the exact same method as someone else to learn things. So don't worry and just use what works for you whenever you want !

    Well, your video is so helpful but when I started learning Korean I started learning with hanguel because I knew that learning a language without learning the letters is such a bad idea.😅

    Something that has not been brought up enough in these videos abt learning korean is that when you learn a new word, dont just memorize it. Make your own sentence and put it in context. If you know a certain word but can't put in a proper sentence correctly then it's not going to help you very much. Personally, I acquire words better by using it in actual conversation rather than just writing it down a bunch on paper. And this is because when I use it in a real conversation, it's not studying. It's practical use. And that's how you learn anything for real; through *practical use*
