Roland has an amazing speaking voice and singing voice of course. he is the only one that I know about, who could sing David Bowie songs without being embarrassing.
Yep....1985 in Milton Keynes, UK. Neon lights everywhere, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Van Halen, Prince and of course these guys heard everywhere. Such a magical time and place.
I was born in 73 and was mainly a metal head but then bands like this came around and I instantly loved them...I’m also a big fan of the album Disintegration by The Cure....kinda weird coming from a Slayer fan but I have a wide variety of music that I love
That’s the key for me mate, if you can make a record that never dates or sounds part of a scene you’ve nailed it. Would love to see a documentary on how they recorded shout & what gear they used. I believe the keyboard player at the time had a lot of input and would like to know more about him too.
The Hurting is my favorite album by TFF. I was a teenager at the time, going through my first crushes/heartbreaks. I would listen to the whole album at a time and could relate to all the songs.
I love those two. They have done SO much promote for their new album but they come across as really nice decent guys! I’m so impressed with how open they are. The new album is great but I knew it would be. They are quality - always have been always will be
This type of Interview is so real. Love when artists are real. They both have great taste in music, Genesis, Talking Heads, Peter Gabriel, Beatles, Pink Floyd, Bowie, Paul Simon = GOOD Stuff. They need their own podcast and talk about their influences and albums.
*I am a metal head by heart but I also have a wide variety of music that I love to listen to and TFF is one of those bands...excellent musicians and excellent vocals...how can one not like them.*
Him saying everyday life was so unexpected honestly it blew my mind I thought I was the only one obsessed with it but it’s nice to know I’m in good company Also his assessment with the newer album compared to everyday life is spot on I was so disappointed
Completely agree with Roland about Coldplay. Everyday life was brilliant but not so successful commercially because it wasn't aimed at the majority of the population who don't really appreciate their music as deeply as you would like
These two are my favorite musicians and I’m a punk rocker and NYHC drummer, so not my main style of music. Tears for fears have always been the top of my favorite bands ever.
As a longtime fan, I am impressed and refreshed by their honesty. While listening to their recent interviews and listening to their new album, I stand and clap, Bravo! Brilliant minds.
Best album ever "The Hurting" . I remember lining up outside in the rain all night for tickets to the Toronto, Massey Hall show in 1985. To this day, the tightest music I have ever heard live! I remember very little lighting and the sax and acoustic guitar were statues until they played their parts. So great!
Very proud that these two are from Bath, Peter Gabriel is from our village just outside Bath and their producer (ex Adam and the Ants drummer) who co-wrote EWTRTW is also in the village. 👏
Their music has always been beautiful and back in the 80s their arrangements were well ahead of its time . Thankyou for years of joy . Both very quality people.
Every album of theirs I listen to from beginning to end, as a journey and not in small bites by only listening to the favorites. I'm always in a better place by the end of the album and felt like they have taken my hand while I listened. TFF is one of the only bands where I do this, and I have never tired of them. It was wonderful to hear a little bit about what music inspires them. More, please.
To Curt and Roland, Thank you for writing and playing such brilliant, ageless and beautiful music. Great to watch you share your choices of music. Thank you from all music fans.
And one of my top 5 albums will have to be Songs From The Big Chair. Every song on that album has a distinctive sound, no song sounds the same, from Shout to Listen. TFF, two geniuses.
It’s rare that I can listen to newer material that is produced in the newer era. Especially in its entirety. That being said, after listening to the brand new tears for fears album, it is an outstanding effort. I was captivated from start to finish. TFF aren’t my “go to” band, but I certainly appreciate their body of work. This new album from them is an absolute triumph imho. Happy for them.
Two living legends with an intuitive feel for both melody and lyrics. All the better for your resolving your differences to make another gift to us. Even though you may never meet us, we know your music as friends.
I really loved this interview as it brings out how down to earth Curt and Roland are and I would like to congratulate them on a stunningly beautiful arranged album, love and peace✌️

I love them. They are the makers of my all time favourite song. Genius albums.. Roland is so unaffected. Kurt is calm. I so wish they had never fallen out
The first album I ever bought on vinyl at the age of 9 was The Hurting… feel very proud to know that I had great taste from the start. Still a brilliant album in every way. 🙏🏻
Curt Smith's collection is surely expected like this which says it all about the originality and creativity of TFF’'s style...this band is an icon of 1980's love it forever..
We just saw these guys a few weeks ago in STL. I could not believe how good they still sound, especially vocally. These two have more talent between them then 90% of all recording artist working right now.
My favorite band Tears for fears! They were really genius making good songs ! Remember from the 80s was really good musicians! Tears for fears is timeless!! Still listening now 2022
Bath and around that region, is that right? That's where Peter Gabriel has his famous Realworld studio too. Not too far away in Bristol is the Ardman animation studio. That's quiet a well of creative talent....what are they putting in the water down your way?!
This is a really interesting clip that I enjoyed very much and I would like to see more content like this. I didn’t realize how influential Peter Gabriel’s Melt record was and it caused me to go back to it and listen to it from a new perspective. Fantastic.
Let's not forget Peter Gabriel was the first to have used Fairlight CMI extensively, of course Tears For Fears followed the trend and rightfully so! The inspiration can be heard, definitely.
Love hearing top musicians expressing a love for music from other artists. Such refreshing honesty. You could both do an hour long slot on your favourite albums and why. I’d certainly watch that.
Very cool. I love the ii album also and totally agree. It is quite the landscape and a beautiful one at that. Roland's articulation of the details of Paul Simon and the way he writes compared to other in his acceptance is something Ive never thought about. And his indepth knowledge of Peter Gabriel and recording techniques and style is interesting. Makes me appreciate Tears For Fears work even more. No wonder the production, style, presentation and content of their songs is so good. They are studied in other artists more so than I realized.
So glad they are making new-music. They really are Magic together. Their songs are haunting: Advice for the young at heart, Standing on the Corner of the 3rd world, Sketches of pain, (among many others) = incredible vocals, songwriting & production. oNe LoVe from NYC
I was 8 years old when sowing the seeds of love was released and I can still remember being amazed by it. I bought it on 7". Looking back I can't believe I was only 8 - I understood and appreciated the music just as I do today - I still love that song.
so thrilled to see so much Tears for Fears content pouring out right now. Been a huge fan since around 1983 and it's amazing to see them together and enjoying what they created and moving forward with new music.
So glad you were brave enough to list Everyday Life. It's been a generally unpopular album by many people, but I think it's musical sweep is extraordinary, akin to the White Album. Plus it has an uplifting but unpretentious spiritual strand to it, and it's best listened start to finish. Btw I loved Raoul and the Kings of Spain - bit of an overlooked TFF album!
The Pink Floyd song he was referring to about the record execs is "Have a Cigar". Roy Harper was in the next studio over so they asked him to come in and sing the song. He did an incredible job..imo.
2:22 - 'The sign of a good album . . . ' My favourites these days are 'Caterwaul and Doggerel' by Bob Snider and 'Peggy Suicide' by Julian Cope. Totally sublime and relaxing.
Having long since flogged my vinyl copies I recently rediscovered both Peggy Suicide and Jehovah Kill picking up the cassettes for pennies in a charity shop. What great albums.
Yep agree with Glenn Tillema.....needed to be an hour long. Love it because they themselves have made utterly timeless work. I would like to hear them talk about the best ten albums of each decade.
Just received the new album today and haven't had a chance to sit down and give it a serious listen, but so good to see you both out and about. Love ya guys!
As a lover of prog rock I have so much love for T4F (The Cure and Radiohead for that matter). So many highlights in their library of songs but if I had to choose 3 it would be Break It Down Again, Raoul & The Kings of Spain, and Famous Last Words
Absolutely LOVE this. These two have been in my top 5 since I first heard Change. I've always enjoyed hearing them talk about their music and I'm finding this conversation equally compelling. We have an amazing capacity to associate both happy and sad experiences in our lives to the music we were listening to at that time. Sometimes we find the music, other times the music finds us. It's funny that TFF's music found me much the way Pink Floyd's did. I'm intrigued that I find TFF and PF compelling and TFF finds PF compelling. I am very interested in understanding the connection. The more you can understand, the more real the experience of listening and connection becomes. Thank you Roland and Curt, I'll wave when I see you at PNC-NJ on 6/24!
Glad they get along now. They have aged dramatically, funny how time flies. Even though I was a metal head, still am, I really liked these guys in the 80s.

I love that Paul Simon song Still Crazy After All These Years. But a song that I have considered may be my best loved American song is Fast Car by Tracy Chapman. The heartfelt story of human struggle, the idea that we can always hope and dream that things will get better, the genuine portrait of what's it's like to give of oneself to help others, while doing what one can to make ends meet --- it's just a track that says so much and has that drive and beautiful folk aura. Love it.
I absolutely loved these guys in the 80's, so highbrow and alternative to the mainstream... its probably why I loved Leftfield in the 90's... complete different genres but with a similar significance and signature ❤🙏
I'm into many genres and bands....From 60s psychedelic rock to Soundcloud alternative hiphop, But Id love me some Tears For Fears. These 2 guys are great!

Interesting that Curt talks about the production on PG 3. For me, Sowing the seeds still sets the benchmark for incredible production. So much so that it makes me buy cars that have a decent sound system to do the album justice when on the road.
Love me some Coldplay. Put on a shuffle & play all day while I'm outside piddling around. Incredible music for just 4 guys. (With a few guests peppered around for kix) incredible songwriting skills from Chris💖🦾
Glad to see Floyd and Paul Simon in there, both from 1975. Would like to check out the other choices. I would’ve loved to see more! TFF, classy dudes!!! 👍

What these two lack in 80’s youthful vigor and appearance (don’t we all 🙄), they ooze and overflow with tranquil wisdom.
They sang "Mother Russia, badly burned, your children lick your wounds ..." which seems even more cuttingly ironic today than it did in 1985.

Interesting that Curt talks about the production on PG 3. For me, Sowing the seeds still sets the benchmark for incredible production. So much so that it makes me buy cars that have a decent sound system to do the album justice when on the road.
This story was very educational for me as a TFF fan.I'm exciting. Thank you. ❤️ From Japan .

I love Curt’s words.. “ Work Of Genius “ as he describes Peter Gabriel.
This clip is way too short, could listen to these two, the whole evening!
No matter where we are
these guys are legends 🤟🏻
