I've been a runner for more than 40 years, but still took inspiration from the TH-cam community this year when, one year ago, Michael Aranda proposed the idea of running 2016 miles in 2016. It meant averaging about 5.5 miles a day. This is nearly twice what I'd ever run previously, but thanks to the power of Online Video Community, I'll be reaching that goal later this morning. Thank you, TH-cam, John, Craig (and Michael), and good luck, everyone, with all of YOUR fitness goals in 2017!
Craig chronicled his journey and I was always amazed by his willpower. He went out in bad weather, when he was really tired, and even when he was injured he just cut back a little. Perseverance is a big part of the battle.
It'd be great if you also gave us some exercise/food tips as you complete the challenge in case some viewers get motivated to take a step towards a healthier lifestyle (totally not talking about me and how exciting** this seems to be).
2 years ago, at the age of 41, I had my mid-life crisis and decided to start working out and eat well. Best decision of my life. Good luck and looking forward to your videos.
I hope you can discuss getting past the pain in running. I hate running BECAUSE when I run all I can think about is how much my legs ache and lungs burn. With other exercise I have to be mentally engaged with what I'm doing so I can distract myself from the pain, but when you run the pain is all there is, and this is not a place I enjoy, or can even comprehend enjoying. I'd really like to love running, but I just don't and have no idea how or if you can learn to like it.
i listen to funny podcasts, good distraction. But if you're hurting that much maybe you should slow down a bit, intersperse your running with walking. You stretch right?
Make sure you take walking breaks. If it's hurting, dial it back and walk for a bit. No need to push so hard that it hurts that much. You'll gradually work up to being able to run for longer stretches. There is no shame in taking the walking breaks as you need them during the process.
Start to Run groups go about it very slowly. Running is extremely harsh on your joints, be gentle, be careful and take it slowly. Find yourself a good beginner running routine online and slowly work from there. You might even misunderstand your lack of pain like that with lack of effort but don't fall into that trap! Example of running routine: Gentle warmup 1 min slow jog 2 min walk 1 min intermediate pace run 2 min walk 2 min comfortable pace run 2 min walk 1 min run intermediate pace 1 min walk 1 min jog 2 min walk 1 min slow jog Cooling down It is very normal to need 13 weeks before you're even able to run your first 5k non-stop. Really, take your time, be consistent and be nice yourself. Running can totally be a painless and wonderful thing for your body and mind but you have to be smart about it :).
I do stretch yes, before and after. The pain in the extremities, though present, isn't the deal breaker. It's the feeling out of breath that really does it. I start to feel out of breath incredibly fast, and unless I slow down almost at once, this can turn into nausea. If what I'm doing is too hard, then I must be incredibly bad, as even 2 minutes of moderate jogging is a problem (for contrast, I can climb or spar for much longer and feel fine). Thanks for the comments though! :)
If you're new to WheezyWaiter, I highly recommend you check out The Good Stuff's video "How Hard is it to Run a Marathon?" It's about 20 minutes but worth every second. You see Craig start to finish in his marathoning and it's really quite something.
Craig's right it is *refreshing*! Until yesterday I hadn't been on a run in 3 weeks, and i've been getting sick of how tired i feel all day (like.. baggy eyes, wanna sleep all the time, bluh). But after my run i felt completely alert and my tiredness was just... gone! It was more effective than any stimulant i've ever had. I keep forgetting this. Normally i only do it for mental health, coz i find it more effective than antidepressants. But now i gotta remember that it's a great way to wake myself up too.
In a sense, I guess. It's called bouldering and you get up to a fairly small height (so you don't need a harness or anything) and go sideways like you're in a low-ceilinged cave or something. Your body is still vertical though and judging by John's track record even that small height might be a struggle.
Yeah, he's saying it in that reality TV show way that's like "I'm not gonna do that, hahaha. *(cut to him about to do that)* I can't believe I'm doing this." But John's level of genuine, non-exaggerated-for-the-camera fear kind of worries me. John, you can do exercise that ISN'T completely terrifying to you.
When I was in a bad neighborhood, my exercise opportunities were limited to school, indoors, or travel to a safe destination (rink, dance, dojo). I love my current neighborhood, where it is safe for me on "exercise" days to walk the half-hour distance to and from the nearest bus stop.
as someone who never really excercised (except for my daily bike ride to school, yes i'm dutch) i feel john's pain, but i had to run 4 miles every other day this summer and fall for pe class, and i can confirm craig's story. i wish i had the guts to go out in bad weather, but i don't see myself running when it's one degrees celsius out there. i also don't really have the time anymore, because of school. as craig said, life gets in the way.
i ran the first time in 2017 today and it was beautiful outside the road pulled me along these 10 kilometers like nothing and i still feel so awesome for doing it thanks to you for being an inspiration
Love this! I got back into running this year after taking a several year break from intense workouts for a myriad of reasons but mostly for my mental health. Over the past seven months I've lost 60+ pounds and run between 30 and 40 miles per week. Last week I hit a new long distance record of 16 miles and I have to agree with Craig - it gets easier the more you do it and gradually becomes something you really enjoy! Thanks for sharing this!
I watched his videos for a few months several years ago, and then haven't seen him much since then. He looks so much healthier!! Not just that he's lost a little weight, but his face just literally looks like the face of a healthier person. Not sure what exactly. Even skin tone? Brighter complexion? Either way.. go Craig!
I specifically don't run because it hurts my legs. But I like what Craig was saying when applied to exercise in general. Since starting college where I have to walk a significant amount more than I used to I have actually had less amounts of depression and have been feeling more awake.
Rock climbing! Yes! I'm really looking forward to these episodes. Climbing is one of the most addictive physical activities ever, involving both strength and problem solving. DFTBA!
Can't wait for this! I did the Couch to 5K program successfully ... and then I stopped running. I think the gamification helped, but once it was complete I didn't successfully continue doing it as a part of my weekly routine. Maybe this series will inspire me to run again like Craig's daily vlogs inspired me to start earlier this year. -julián
this sounds great, I have been eating better and exciting for about 3 months now. I imidately felt happier and had better skin . it's been great can't wait to see your journey.
I occasionally rock climb, I love it! I once climbed half dome in Yosemite National Park (taking one of the easiest routes). It is absolutely beautiful on the ledge... I usually just climb in gyms since the area I live in does not have many areas to climb outside. Gyms are a great place to start and train and are themselves quite fun to challenge yourself to harder and harder courses.
I am so excited for this! I've always had this on/off relationship with exercise, but I am starting to realise that the only way to have a healthy life is by actually committing to it. Can't wait to share the journey :D
I've been backpacking for a year and put on just over a stone, through travelling I found my happy place so in 2017 I'm going to use that new found confidence and outlook on life to find my fitness happy place. I did run for a few weeks, did 5k well enough but lost motivation, even though after running I always felt amazing. I'm going to try and do this healthy life change thing and know you guys will be my inspiration to keep going!!
Jessy I'm mostly looking forward to John shouting "Them GAINS, SON!". At first it will be sarcastic, but as he builds muscle he'll slowly start to become serious. I'm telling ya, Bro John is gonna be a thing!
I am so excited for this channel to begin!!! I'm going to do my best to take the first 100 days of 2017 and really narrow in on my own health and fitness goals, and see where that gets me. :)
can only agree with Craig (even though i've never run a marathon), keeping a routine can really help. once i got used to running, i also started to enjoy it more and more. so excited for this series, best of luck for you guys! :)
I've tried and failed multiple times to stick to a healthy routine, so I'm looking forward to trying again along with you guys. Doesn't hurt to keep trying. Well, physically it does kinda hurt...BUT I'm still excited about it.
I absolutely detest running, always have. But i love swimming, and i get all the feelings Craig was talking about, plus you never feel sweaty. But I haven't been in months, this has motivated be to get back at it. Anyway, there's probably always something someone can enjoy.
Looking forward to that 1/5 golf session. I'm wanna be healthier for the new year, though that is mostly gonna be eating, I'm glad you guys will keep me company. Dftba
i absolutely hate running. but this video is making me feel motivated to at least start. i'll take it slow. walk, jog and run a little. let's see if i can do this.
I am totally planning on joining you guys on this journey as best as a busy college student can. I'm really stoked to have an actual New Years resolution I actually believe in this year. And also being healthy would be nice too.
If you are in the UK, or some other countries as well, and want to get into running, check out parkrun. It is a free, weekly (saturday 9AM), timed 5k run organised in many places and the atmosphere is always great. It doesnt matter if you run it in 16, 30 or 50 minutes everybody is welcome!
faneverythingawesome if he was only talking about himself, he would say follow along with me. all he did was add Chris in, it doesn't change the role in sentence that "me" is playing. the "and I" rule is not all encompassing.
Not a grammatical mistake. "Chris and me" is right in all contexts. English only requires "I" in sentences where it's the only word in the subject noun phrase. Love, Your friendly neighborhood linguistics grad student. (note: in super-formal writing, it's recommended to use "X and I" in subject position, even though it's wrong in spoken English, because some 18th century idiots decided that English wasn't good enough and demanded that people start injecting random Latin grammar rules)
"I went to the store." --> "Chris and I went to the store". "I don't want that." --> "Chris and I don't want that." "Is that for me?" --> "Is that for Chris and me?" "Follow along with me." --> "Follow along with Chris and me." Use "I" when the sentence would have used "I" without the other person, use "me" when the sentence would have used "me" without the other person.
John, you'll love rock climbing! It seems terrifying but there's a definite mental fun that goes along with the physical, and a wonderful satisfaction of making it to the top. :) Also, I second (and third and fourth...) Craig's mantra for taking up exercise (or anything): start small, and build, build, build. It's one of the principles in our kung fu practice and it has served me well. It's so amazing and surprising how far one develops with what seems with so little progress each time. :)
That is very inspiring! I myself have always had a hate hate relationship with running but I know there are plenty of other cardio based exercises I could work into for a healthier life in my 30's
Oh man, the first time I went rock climbing, I definitely had a panic attack about how high up I was and my fear of heights appears to pale in comparison to John's. (At least, I don't have a problem standing on a table). Good luck, John!
Energy! Yes, that's what exercise is for. It seems the opposite of logic: spending energy = having more energy... but it's 100% true. It just takes a little time to kick in and then it is like a drug. It helps with depression, eating habits, sleeping disorders, skin problems, etc. etc.. The more you move, the more you want to move. The more you sit, the more you want to sit. Inertia only requires that one little push right at the beginning.
I am afraid of heights and did wall climbing quite a few years ago, shocked some more fit men at how fast I could get to the top. I'm sure you can climb too John.
Really excited for this! I'm running my first ever marathon in April and I've never run further than 10k before. I started officially training for it yesterday so this is perfect timing!
I'm gonna be a debbie downer here, but this summer I tried this for 4 months. I'm not a runner, but I ran 5 out of 7 days every week for 30 minutes or more. I ate much healthier. And I did lose a significant amount of weight. However, I didn't magically feel better or have more energy. I frequently felt tired, sore and generally crappy. I also felt more stressed out, probably because I was spending what little free time I had running instead of relaxing. I hope John is honest with how he ends up feeling and doesn't just pretend its awesome if he too ends up just feeling crappier.
So hyped for this new channel right now! I like going for short jogs myself (a sport-type thing you can do alone, why didn't I discover this earlier!) and I hope to get some new ideas for new solo exercise activities. Best of luck guys!
It's soooo clever how they've marketed this 'show'- they've achieved all these subscribers without really doing anything yet, imagine how many they'll have when they start consistently posting.
Argh - thanks for the inspiration guys - now I'll have to join you 😓 on this insane adventure. I watched Craig's evolution and it was really cool - I miss seeing his 7min workouts. John it's reeeeeally noticeable your working out! Your arms and face shape really show it! Well done you! I prrdict The Yeti is happy too... 😉😉 Quick question - has all this helped with your anxiety etc?
I'd like to hear how Craig worked his way up to the marathon distance. Like, what were his incremental goals? What time of day did he run? Did he eat before or after running? What phone app does he use to track his time and distance? How can I avoid the minor injuries he got?
Is there any way we can participate with you (maybe a way for us to post fitness wins, milestones, etc)? I would love to see the Nerdfighter community do this 100 days challenge with you John!
Dunno why I'm rewatching this 6 years later, but even the third time around it's still weirdly uplifting
I know what you mean!
I've been a runner for more than 40 years, but still took inspiration from the TH-cam community this year when, one year ago, Michael Aranda proposed the idea of running 2016 miles in 2016. 2 years ago, at the age of 41, I had my mid-life crisis and decided to start working out and eat well.
Best decision of my life.
Good luck and looking forward to your videos.
I'm watching this while eating directly out of a bag of M&Ms.
Tub of icecream. Feel you. It's also like, 30 minutes before dinner.
500 ml of Häagen Dazs Baileys Ice Cream, planning to eat an unhealtyish dinner in up to three hours. Thought I'd feel worse watching the video.

Hahaha. Do they have horizontal rock climbing?

4:08 "Chris and me" can't tell if it's a grammatical mistake John made or he's saying Craig's clone Me is going to be a part of this now
faneverythingawesome it's correct. you wouldn't say with I, you'd say with me. adding "Chris and" before doesn't change that.
Maggie Betz could you explain?
faneverythingawesome if he was only talking about himself, he would say follow along with me. all he did was add Chris in, it doesn't change the role in sentence that "me" is playing. the "and I" rule is not all encompassing.
Not a grammatical mistake. "Chris and me" is right in all contexts. English only requires "I" in sentences where it's the only word in the subject noun phrase.

I reckon John should do the marathon. Because when you do something as amazing as that you can always look back at it and feel great.

John, you'll love rock climbing! Oh right, I subscribed to this.
Hmm... I should probably try to take part in this.
Great intro by Craig. Making those changes is intense but so good
So excited for this series 😍
I'm looking forward to this. I tried Zombies Run for a bit; really enjoyed it, but didn't stick with it. maybe I'll try again.

Super excited to join you on your journey! Also, super not excited.
I am so excited for this!!!!!!!
i'm excited about this show!
So hyped for this new channel right now! I like going for short jogs myself (a sport-type thing you can do alone, why didn't I discover this earlier!) and I hope to get some new ideas for new solo exercise activities. Best of luck guys!
Id love a video on this channel now its 7years + to see if anything stuck and if there were any reflections anyone had on doing this.
It's soooo clever how they've marketed this 'show'- they've achieved all these subscribers without really doing anything yet, imagine how many they'll have when they start consistently posting.
Yay! So excited for this!
I'm so excited for this!
Thanks Wheezy! love your stuff.
That's an awesome idea! Good luck!
Im so excited to see this!!
Quick question - has all this helped with your anxiety etc?
You guys know the book "running with your mind" by Sakyong Mihpah Rinpoche? He's a Tibetan meditation teacher, and marathon-runner.
My son has that shirt! Well, had that shirt. Apparently, it also come in size 12 months. In case you're wondering.
'Im just terrified of pain' same john, same.
I'd like to hear how Craig worked his way up to the marathon distance. Like, what were his incremental goals? What time of day did he run? Did he eat before or after running? What phone app does he use to track his time and distance? How can I avoid the minor injuries he got?
This was really motivating!
I loved this!!!
this is so inspiring!
this looks awesome! best of luck
At 2:18, the closed captions say "China" instead of "Chyna" ... Just wanted to let you know! :)
Rock climbing is fun. I wish I was better at it but it's loads of fun
John's going rock climbing!!!!
Is there any way we can participate with you (maybe a way for us to post fitness wins, milestones, etc)? I would love to see the Nerdfighter community do this 100 days challenge with you John!
