I feel the opposite. Witcher 3 is great and one of my favorites for it's story but as an open world rpg, it's very restrictive when trying to explore. Elden Ring on the other hand gives you complete freedom + great combat. Sure, one might argue the story is very much non-existent or a mess but I personally liked how clueless I was about the world. Elden Ring is my #1.

Man you really should try Pillars of Eternity 2. Up until Persona 5 Royal finally came to pc and I finally got to play it POE 2 was my favorite game of all time. Its so good. Currently i still like it and Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous more than Baldurs Gate but im only like 20 hours into BG because im focused on Trails and Tales right now. I do think it might change though.

I’ve played FF7 Remake literally 13 times. Yet I’ve tried 3 times now to play The Witcher 3 and still can’t stick with it…. People have different tastes, and FF7 Rebirth looks 1,000 times better than Remake.

The way you can use materia is so creative and you can't just use materials simply as it can buff or debuff your stats whic is good, it makes you wiser. FF7 remake already had a blue print for their battle mechanic and we're just gonna see more in Rebirth.
I agree with the list but I’d put Tales of Arise to atleast 7 (move down the other games 1 game that came after that) And I’d make Persona 5 on top (because I’m just biased with Persona LOL) But overall good list man! 🤘🏻
Easiest way is 1) Cut JRPGs from discussion, they aren't even called RPGs, they're JRPGs, sure they still have RPG in em but actual gameplay of JRPGs lacks *roleplaying* 2) Cut games that think skill systems and levels and random loot makes you an RPG, so no Souls likes, no looter shooters those are good games but NOT Roleplaying games. 3) Must have tons of choices with consequences, couples of examples are Fallout 1,2, NV, Gothic series, Witcher series, Vampire Masquerade, almost all Obsidian studio RPG games.

I think NieR automata is the better game, but persona is the better RPG and it's not even close. Trying to actually get better upgrades and stuff in NieR automata is absolutely miserable, and half the side content is trash. NieR's strength is in its story and world, which are both top notch, but i think most of the RPG features are pretty mid. Persona 5 is arguably the best turn based RPG of all time (not my favorite, but objectively the best) and one of the best JRPGs ever as well. I'd rather play NieR, but i can say that persona absolutely deserved to win. (I didn't play Os2 so maybe that was better, i wouldn't know)
While I do like Baldur’s Gate 3 a lot, I’d put Elden Ring at number 1 if it was my list. Fromsoftware games and souls like are my favorite genre so they’d always win in my lists. I even think I enjoyed Lies of P more than Baldur’s gate, but that’s just my opinion. I tried Persona 5 and got like 10 hours in but it just wasn’t for me. I would’ve liked Nier Automata to win that year. That’s another one of my favorite games. I love the story and I’m a sucker for hack and slash gameplay. Maybe I’ll try Persona 5 again one day cause I really like the anime aesthetic, but the whole sim part of it just bored me. I wanted it to be more dungeon crawling turn based gameplay.
Man finally picked up p5 after wanting to since i was young but man i dropped it not long in, i felt like its just going to be too bloated with unnecessary repeated dialogue and stuff. 20 hours just to finish the handholding tutorial is nuts

Dragon Age Inquisition benefitted greatly from being released at the beginning of the PS4/XBoxOne life cycle and people were desperate for games to play. When Witcher 3 came out a couple of years later, DA:I looked completely obsolete in every way. It has not held up.
Crazy how only 2 of these games are actual RPGs which is Dragon Age and Baldur's Gate with the rest being action games with light RPG elements. Edit: Yep I was right Disco Elysium is not an RPG.

I have to disagree with you on one thing. Despite the industry wide delusion the Dark Souls games (and yes, Elden Ring too) are not rpg's. Without falling onto calling them "soulslike's" I would describe them as action/combat simulators with some rpg elements. This is not to knock the various From software games, or their imitators. I have played many of them (most?) and greatly enjoyed them but they are not rpg's. Other than this one relatively minor gripe it's a good list. And good vid

Where Baldur's gate 3 excels is in the story, but holy shyte does it have some of the worst controls of all time. Anytime you have to angle upwards to see and or shoot at something ... it's agonizing and then out of nowhere it will launch the camera into the ether and you have to figure out where in the nine hells your character/s are located... the camera speed will go in and out of snail and mock 10 pace. I ended up downloading a few mods to make the controls manageable. It seems as though all of the difficult/complicated shyte the game gets right, but it craps the bed on so many of the simpler/commonsensical components. They also went a little goofy with the amount of garbage one must sift through on a per screen basis. The games gargantuan enough... do they really need 50+% of it's running time dedicated to looking in crates/vases/etc where you'll get the ever so common rotten carrot/tomato/cheese? On a first play through most of us are afraid we may miss an important item so we end up going through the tedious process of sifting through a pawn shops worth of garbage on a per screen/room basis... it's a tedious/unfun process. The story is what really carries the game and the amount of different choices the game lets you make, but the controls in conjunction with navigating/switching characters/items/weapons is tedious and not fun.
I love monster hunter rise but it will never reach the feeling world gave us. World really gave you the feeling you are a hunter in another world and you have to hunt those monsters. They made the game more serious which is what it is supposed to be. I liked that it was not as childish as the other games even tho I played a tone of rise and I also like the style of it.
FF7 remake has the best combat in any action RPG ever. RPG & strategy elements of it are much more refined than witcher 3. Only reason people think negatively about that game is because of it's incomplete story and padding. What makes witcher 3 great are it's world building & quest design, not RPG elements.

Persona 5 is overrated. It looks, sounds and plays great but it's too bloated and the pacing is glacial. Most games last less than just the first arc of P5. A whole playthrough of The Witcher 2 lasts about as much as that. Lol Also for a game about planning how to use time, it takes many times the control out of the player and forces them into linear unfun stretches. It's a great game bordering on amazing, but it's just too self-indulgent. It takes far too long to get anywhere.

Both Divinity Original Sin are masterpieces in my opinion. I think they are way better than the RPG of the year they elected in 2014 and 2017.

Persona 5 is overrated. It looks, sounds and plays great but it's too bloated and the pacing is glacial.
Most games last less than just the first arc of P5. A whole playthrough of The Witcher 2 lasts about as much as that. Lol
Also for a game about planning how to use time, it takes many times the control out of the player and forces them into linear unfun stretches.
It's a great game bordering on amazing, but it's just too self-indulgent. It takes far too long to get anywhere.
It's just not really for everyone, but for some people (including me) it ticks all the boxes and that's why it's my favorite videogame of all time
