We often talk about taxes and making money here on this channel. However, there is one more important thing than that - it's your health.
And recently, I got asked about countries that offer good quality and affordable healthcare and medical treatments.
You have a problem that might be too expensive to get treatment for in your home country? There are huge waiting lines? You need to put a massive chunk of your savings into surgery or treatment? There might be alternatives for you!
Today we are talking about 5 countries that offer good quality and affordable medical treatments, and that are extremely popular for medical tourism.
So which countries are good when it comes to medical treatments?
    1. The first one is clearly Thailand. This doesn't surprise at all. Thailand is home to many different medical treatments, including sex change. If you're interested in plastic surgery you might want to check Thailand out. They have massive modern hospitals, and you will pay a fraction of the price you'd pay in your home country.
    2. Malaysia - Healthcare in Malaysia is quite good. You can get all kinds of treatments, and doctors are speaking English. I personally had a great experience in Malaysia.
    3. India - This one might surprise you. Many people have all kinds of prejudice when it comes to India, but actually, India offers quite a lot when it comes to medical tourism. They have big hospitals and English-speaking staff. Many doctors and nurses are educated abroad, and they are of high quality. There are some treatments that you can't get anywhere else in the world.
    4. Turkey - this is probably not surprising as Turkey has been a spot for medical tourism for quite a while now. You can see people getting hair transplants, nose jobs, and other kinds of esthetic procedures in Turkey. People from all over the world travel here to get treatments that are affordable and of good quality.
    5. Mexico - another one that is not surprising. Mexico is especially popular among people from the US due to its proximity. You can get all the treatments that you could get in the US but for a fraction of the cost.
Who are we and what do we do?
We are Offshore Citizen team. We help people become global: get a second passport, set up a second residency, pay less taxes, do banking abroad, etc.
We have lots of interesting articles on different topics, we have relevant information up to date.

@@OffshoreCitizen I was actually looking at both Thailand and India for a Cyber knife IGRT machine, only to discover that The Medical City in Manila had the newer True Beam machine and the 18F Coline PET scan machines as well. The Medical Team I had included a Professor in Robotic Surgery and an Oncologist who was trained in the USA and who'd worked in Korea and Japan. The entire treatments and follow up cost $6k USD and all but $1k was handled by my insurance. The same treatment in the US was going to cost $80k+, so pretty good deal. It was Stage 4 Prostate Cancer and I've been in remission for nearly 4 years. I discovered a lot of US citizens come here now, rather than Thailand, for treatments.

The best health care I had was in Singapore (as an American). I had an ear infection and was flying out in the morning but was afraid of the pain once up in the air. I decided to go to the emergency room to be seen as my pain was horrendous. I went to the lobby of the hotel and the attendant asked me what I needed. I said I needed a taxi to go to the hospital. He said the taxis are right outside and the hospital is a few minutes away. I walked outside, got in the taxi and within a few minutes was in the ER in Singapore. Shockingly, it was empty. There was a woman at a desk and she asked me what I needed. I told her I had severe ear pain. She asked me to fill out a tiny tiny form. As I was putting in my address, she said "no, just put your name and your passport number. that's all we need." Right next to me stood a man watching me and when I finished my form, I looked to him and he said "am the doctor and am ready to see you". I thought "WOW, that's quick". We walked less than 10 feet and he took a look at my ears and did a general exam. There was a nurse in the room and he asked her to get me the meds. In a few minutes, she gave me antibiotics and pain killers and a course of antibiotics to finish the course. I paid around $30 US dollars and was done in less than 10 minutes. I was back at the hotel in way less than 30 minutes....Had this been in the US, the bill would have been thousands and thousands of dollars and probably a 5 hour wait.

Wow, what a difference! I find health insurance in the United States, is overwhelming, even besides the cost since you have to choose between quite a number of different health insurance, then choose what form of deductible you want, choose what kind of copayment you want, choose if you want it in or out of network doctor etc.

This is such an important topic.. Was reflecting about this recently.. Thanks Mike for bringing it up. An idea - wouldnt it be great to have a list of the top hospitals in these places (Malaysia, India, Thailand, Turkey, Singapore, Dubai etc) for each type of treatment. For eg. For heart surgery X, for eye surgery Y, for dental Z, for annual health check ups A, ... For the most common illness groups.

@@OffshoreCitizen The other idea following on from that Mike would be to assess if taking out private health insurance in say 2 or 3 of these countries would make sense, say Malaysia, Turkey and India. Would it be possible for say a British citizen to take out a health insurance plan in these countries if one is non resident there? Also does it make more sense to take out Top Up cover rather than comprehensive cover, to keep costs low and only use it in case treatment cost crosses a particular threshold, say $5k or $10k? Of course, most individuals doing this planning would be worth several million, so one can question if they need this insurance. But given the rising cost of some advanced procedures and medical inflation, it may make sense to do some risk transfer, especially when available at reasonable premiums.

I had a lengthy dental visit in Queretaro Mexico. Walked in off the street, no appointment, and was seen by a Canadian-trained, English-speaking dentist straight away. Unfortunately sat in the chair for the best part of two hours - but needed the treatment. Received antibiotics and specialist mouthwash etc - received the bill for $40 for all. When I returned to the UK my own dentist couldn't fault the care I'd received.

None of this is really new but it’s good to hear people are beginning to realize that the medical systems in the old legacy Anglo European Empire cannot meet the demands placed on them and have an unsustainable cost structure. The covid catastrophe exposed the crumbling state health monopolies in Canada UK and others as political leaders locked people in their houses to keep them out of the hospitals. In Canada routine joint replacement surgery requires a 1-2 year wait, a disgraceful situation which will only get worse as the population ages. The medical care available in countries like Mexico and Malaysia is in many cases better and more accessible that in old legacy western countries

I've had medical treatments in Malaysia, Mexico & Belgium - all great treatment and affordable prices. For example... The Gleneagles Hospital in Penang was very much like a 5-star hotel. I recently had abdominal surgery in the UK with the NHS and would have travelled to Poland under normal circumstances (covid had closed the surgical unit in Poland). I had to wait too long which added to the pain and level of surgery required. It started as a routine operation but ended up with major surgery because of the long wait.

i live in india, i've been planning to settle in any western country .. the only issue that i'm facing is there healthcare system which is either expensive or long waiting lines for sure .. i got shocked to hear waiting time of these countries. India has very very very awesome and inexpensive healthcare system and most probably you get the treatment instantly. yeah there is problem of cleanliness but it depends on how much money you can pay. with money you can get treatment in clean private hospitals. but still the quality of doctors is best in government hospitals as they have to pass all the extremely tough medical exams.
