Instead of pouring gas down the throttle body or carb use choke /carb cleaner spray. Your engine will run all day if you keep spraying and if engine back fires you will not have a hand full of gas to catch on fire. As a EMT made many calls for people burned doing it the way you did. By using the spay method if a back fire occurs it will scare you and you let off the spray button and NO INJURY. As an auto mechanic in the 70 to 90 I used this method all the time to prime engines that run out of gas

When I swapped an ax-15 into my 1997 Grand Cherokee, I had this same problem. Turns out it was the crankshaft position sensor (cps). I made a 45min trip to Moose Jaw, which was the only store in Canada that had 1 left haha.

it was a good thing to replace that pump, the filter sock keeps all that rust thats in your tank from getting in the pump and injectors

  • @Garth2011

Yes...diagnostics are important prior to buying parts as complicated as it may seem, its less expensive and more accurate in making the right call. However, even though you have a new fuel pump "Module" in the gas tank, some of the fuel pump module parts are available separately such as the actual fuel pump itself. It only requires to remove the existing fuel pump and electrical wires and hoses then replace with the new one. Its way cheaper too, they average about $40 for just the fuel pump. Also, this method retains your custom fuel float on the existing module you have been using as nothing has changed except for the fuel pump part. I've seen fuel pump module assemblies priced for $600 which is ridiculous when its just the fuel pump that is bad. Also, they do make fuel pump lock ring nut wrenches that will help prevent any collateral damage in removing and replacing them, $12 or so.

I picked up a Scout cheap once that acted the same way. I ripped out a speaker wire and ran it from the battery to the coil and fired it up and drove it home. The ignition switch was bad and would put juice to the coil when in the start position, but not in the run position. Wish I could find a deal on a YJ like that. I have a CJ-7 crawler with a trashed tub that I'm going to rebuild.

I went through that with a '98 XJ years ago. I'm 98.34% sure it had been struck by lightning. A friend of mine loaned an ECU to try out and it would start, run, and die in about 3 seconds. It turned out the ECU was from a 2000 Wrangler that used a chipped key where my XJ didn't. Found a '98 ECU and it ran correctly.
