    Studied dentistry at Guy's from 1983- 88. We had to do ALL our own lab work for crown and bridge and prosthetics. It would have been useful to have a few lectures of life in practice eg being a principal or associate, overheads as a practice owner, regulations, NHS/ PRIVATE and pensions etc.

    Hello dear Dr.
    I'll be graduating from high school in June 2024. And most probably I'll be going to hungary to continue my education. I know they are 2 different majors, but at first I wanted to study physics but then a couple months ago I decided to study dentistry or medicine but most probably I'll go with dentistry.
    I have a couple of questions:
    1) what do you think about the decision I made?
    2) what subjects are mostly studied in dentistry?
    3) did you have an entrance exam? If yes what were the things you were required to study?
    4) can you please tell me about the interview you had.
    I would really appreciate if you respond.
    Thank you
    Best regards,

    • @TwoDentists
      @TwoDentists  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello! Firstly, the decision is completely up to you. You should choose your major based on what you enjoy and what you'll be good at! I'm sure whatever you choose you will do well. Secondly dental courses all differ from one another slightly. The best thing to do is Google the place you want to go and study dentistry and look at their curriculum. Thirdly in the UK we have to sit a UCAT exam. This is an aptitude test. You can Google that too if you want more information. I had two different interviews. One interview was a series of 12 stations of a mix of practical and social based questions getting to know our ethos. The other interview was more traditional and conversational mostly just getting to know me as a person and my values. I hope that help!

    Congratulations Dr.
    I’m 31 and I have been accepted onto a dental hygiene program, my background was like a rollercoaster but now I’ve buckled down and decided I want to pursue a career in the dental field. I realised last year that I actually enjoy learning about the human body, it fascinates me, upon this realisation I thought to myself why not pursue a career in dentistry? I just completed an access to HE in human health and science and I am awaiting the results. From what I recall my grades should be pretty good.
    I am at a cross road now where I can either start my dental hygiene course, finish it, and then eventually enrol onto a dentistry BDS or make a strong application for dentistry from now and apply for 2025.
    What would you suggest?
    Either way wish me luck please, pray whatever way I do go it turns out in my favour.

    I have a Question right now Im in Year 11 - and in September Im going to start 6th form. I want to pick Biology, Chemistry , Maths ,Further Maths - though with these subjects I dont know which course I want to do at University. The courses that Im a bit questioning on about is : Dentistry , Medicine , Computer Science - Im put of by the fact that it is very HARD to get into Dental School, though I really like to do Dentistry. It attracts me more than Medicine. On the other hand, Computer Science is also very good in terms of Employability , Salary. Im interested in Cp and Dent both but cant decide which one.
    I would like to hear from you and want to seek advice from you - about your journey from GCSEs to University and how you managed to get into Dental School. Were there any extra-curricular activities that you did, any tips for interviews that you would like to share. I would be greatly appreciative for your reply.
    Also , Congratulations on graduating dental School!!!

    • @TwoDentists
      @TwoDentists  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Hi! So you’re completely right it is difficult to get in but if you’re determined enough you can do it. My story of how I got in is basically in the video but to answer your other questions:
      I did loads of extra curricular activities, i started a registered charity, i did work experience, I volunteered at schools, i went to a sewing class to see if I had good manual dexterity, I played tennis regularly to improve my hand eye coordination, played the drums amongst load of other things I can’t quite remember. My problem is that i did so much extra curricular that I didn’t get the grade the first time because it took over my life. It wasn’t always fun 😅
      In terms of interview prep that will come, if your in year 11 its a bit soon to be thinking about interview in my opinion but generally there are panel based interviews where you sit across the table from the interviewer and they ask you a series of questions based on your personal statement, why them, why that city why dentistry, what do you hope for in the future of dentistry etc. Or there are station based interview where you get a mark for each station you do and some are interview questions, some test your manual dexterity, some test ability to recall information etc and the top scorers are given an offer.
      Computer science is the future so really look into that too, there are so many opportunities there too so really delve into that field too, maybe learn a bit of a language to see if its for you. If you’re doing further maths that’s very relevant to computer science and you could excel there too.
      Hope this helps

    it's too damn expensive!

    • @TwoDentists
      @TwoDentists  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’re not wrong. I was looking into it a bit more.. in the uk you pay for 4 years at £9000 - so £36000 (our national health service pays for the 5th year) and that doesn’t include price of living so maybe another £50000 at most with the highest rate loan that you could get. So we’re looking at about £85000 debt by the time we leave. But compared to a lot of other degrees which cost the same to study, we get a lot more bang for our buck. I heard it costs the intuitions that teach us around £250,000 to teach us and around £400,000 for each foundation dentist to complete their training. Not sure how true this is but if it is true than.. 🤷‍♂️

      In the UK, once you graduate the conventional route is to do a foundation year in practice and/or hospital while being mentored by a supervisor. Some people go straight to private work but this is rare. Then after that the world is your oyster. You can do what you like as long as you have the proper training and indemnity 👍🏼
