Dentist are not different professionals or less important. Dentist are not secondary to any specialty of medicine. A neurosurgeon has to take dentist appointment if he develops dental pain or need to see an oral surgeon ( specialist dentist) if he breaks his tmj or jaw or develops jaw tumor. So considering dentistry something less is totally wrong. There is wrong concept that physician can treat everything from head to toe but it is totally false. A physician can diagnose dental problems but cannot treat it and will refer to a dental surgeon. And some treatment or surgery are performed in teams consisting of surgeon different specialty like for example oral cancer is treated by a team of oral surgeon ent surgeon and onco surgeon.
