That people hate on the fact that Elphaba was cast with a black actress is the epitome of irony. The entirety of the story is that she gets hate because she’s a different color. If I rolled my eyes any harder I might dislodge a ceiling tile.
It really upsets me to see people react that way. Some of these are diehard Wicked fans who CANNOT accept any variation from the Broadway, which is frankly just sad. Especially the comments about Elphaba being played by a black actress, what an awful and disgusting opinion to have. It's just heartbreaking for me that people feel that way.

I had the unfortunate experience of stumbling across a YT video by some racist, misogynistic incel who’s clearly never even seen the show going on about them race-swapping Elphaba and how terrible having female characters in a movie is in general. It had almost 5K likes and I don’t want to humanity any more.

It will NEVER not be wild to me that we have seen so few black women play Elphie. The analog is so clear to me, and it makes the casting of Cynthia, who was already perfect for it anyway, even sweeter. I cannot wait for the non theatre kid world to experience this magic.
By applying racism to the rich metaphor that is Elphaba's story, you are killing it. You are reducing it to a mere political bullet point. Elphaba's story (written by two white men and one white woman, and originally performed by a white woman) is about human beings, not tiny little demographic incidentals. Everyone looks so perfectly casted. Cynthia blew me away (which I knew she would) but all the tiniest details, like her hand gestures or that amazing swirl of the cloak at the end? Morrible is right about one thing, “absolutely remarkable” is a perfect way to describe it.
Truly a powerful message for anyone who’s been treated as “weird”, “ugly”, or “different”, especially when it comes to black women in particular. So many people don’t realize that it’s an allegory for racism and how corrupt societies will demonize POC for speaking up against them. I normally hate on changing the canonical race of a beloved character, but because Broadway is very fluid anyway artistically --- and because one of the main themes of the story is that Elphaba is hated because of her skin color --- I absolutely LOVE this casting! It's a perfect, fictional example of fighting real-world racism. Cynthia being so pretty and talented is just the cherry on top! ❤❤

I was a little surprised I didn't see anybody mention the racial implications of Elphaba being played by Cynthia (and young Elphaba played by Karis Musongole). I'm just a middle-aged straight white guy, but the social implications of this casting are not lost on me -- especially, as you say, in this moment. It’s always downplayed when a black person specifically a black woman is casted. I am a black woman so I see from a black womans eyes. And Elphaba being casted in this film as a black woman amplifies the feelings of black women specifically in America. Any marginalized group can relate to Elphaba but I as a black woman relate in my own unique way.
I think it was so important that Elphaba be black. It adds so much more weight to the message. Seeing an actor who has experienced similar things that the character has experienced is special. I’m gay and grew up in the church and have diagnosed bipolar and ptsd because of it. My entire life I’ve felt silenced and isolated by just existing. I sat in the movie theater for 10 minutes just crying. This is important.
3:11 I think that’s what made everything hit SO HARD for me. As the weird young black girl that was made fun of a lot, she reminded me a lot of myself and I cried multiple times during the movie.

For someone like me, who never saw the stage play/musical, this trailer is so powerful. I get emotional every time I see this. Top of my list for films to see this year. Love that casting and the music is magical.
I am soooo excited too!!! The only thing that has me worried is the splitting in 2 parts; my fear is that people who don't know the show will be left wanting by the first half, since so many of the emotional gut punches, plot twists and tie-ins to the Wizard of Oz happen in Act 2. I hope they found a good balance with that somehow, so that Wicked part 1 will still feel like a complete movie experience of its own.
Having now seen the movie, I have to say Cynthia playing Elphaba was such a profound choice. You actually entirely believe her portrayal as an outcast in a way that just doesn’t wash with others who have played the role on stage. This movie is very very special and has a whole new layer of depth due to the casting choices. I absolutely loved it. Ariana is so funny. Cynthia is mind blowing. You cannot take your eyes off her. ❤

I’m a 53 year old white British guy who had his first ever experience of Wicked last night at the cinema with my eldest daughter and had tingles all the way through, and your video gave me tingles like you were having too, I also couldn’t work out why but the film hit me emotionally, I have always been a bit of an outcast/ different, and having 2 daughters means I love anything to do with girls and women being brave enough to be who they are and stay true to themselves despite what the world thinks or says about them because they are threatened by their strength and honest forthrightness, and I think you must have had a much bigger and more powerful connection as a black woman? I've been to see it 3 times and each time you end up seeing so much more that you missed before. Just watched a few interviews with Cynthia where she mentioned that all the hair, makeup, nails etc were her choices. They asked her specifically what she wanted and they listened. I love that!

The movie seems like it's going to be a pretty good interpretation of the musical with serious nods to both Maguire's novel and the 1939 film. I think the novel (more than the musical) hits on themes of manipulating public image for power and it looks like we're definitely going to see some plot lines around that. And the art deco themes are soooo nostalgic.
Seeing Idina Menzel live during her run on Wicked makes me extremely bias. Not only did I love the play but I love her singing Defying Gravity and feel like no one does that song justice like her! So I was very skeptical when I heard they were turning it into a movie. But honey, Cynthia is EVERYTHING and so is this trailer!!!! From her gorgeous face shinning through even caked in green makeup and extra long hair (especially the scene with just standing there while Glinda waves her wand), or her incredible voice that gives me chills with those multiple ripples IN ONE BREATH and her acting which makes me think she is a theatre kid because that one second line “you have no real power” was so freaking powerful. I seriously can not take how excited I am for this remake. And I honestly did not think I wold be this excited because I Stan Idina and Kristen. BTW Ariana is coming across as an AMAZING and the prefect Glinda, like she was literally made for this part but I’m just showing praise to my black queen in this comment 🩷

I felt the exact same emotions when I first watched the trailer! There is something so extremely special about seeing a black woman especially Cynthia playing Elphaba! I cried like a baby watching this and can’t wait to see the entire movie! I don’t think I’ve been this excited for a movie in a very long time! I was 16 when Cinderella with Brandy and Whitney came out and I have been a trained dancer since I was 3 so my dance studio owner planned a special night for us to watch it and I was only one of three black girl’s in the studio and we were all so excited and enamored by seeing a black Disney princess! The next year I was given a principal position in our ballet production of Swan Lake and later booked the part of the sugar plum fairy in the Nutcracker! I will never forget the little beautiful black girls coming up to me after the ballet and saying they wanted to dance! I truly wish Thanksgiving was tomorrow lol! I know I’m going to need tissue while watching Cynthia as Elphaba!

I think it’s a good change for the casting of Elphaba. I just watched the movie and I was amazed at how she portrayed the character and her singing voice is amazing. I hope you enjoy the movie because I know I did.
Cynthia pushed to have hairstyles like micro braids, she knew it was an important part of her story in playing the part of Elphaba. Fun fact - the make up department on the film never created 1 big batch of green make up, so they had to make it every day. Unfortunately it was made up of so many colours, that it was never the exact same shade as the day before!
When the first trailer came out I saw a video where this guy reviewed it and essentially said that the casting was forced diversity and I about LOST MY FUCKING MIND. It absolutely ENFURIATES me to see people disregard the blatant meaning behind the story of Wicked and everything it represents. Having Elphaba be a black woman and ON THE BIG SCREEN is the culmination of everything Wicked should have been and I can't say enough good things about this movie ❤
It’s so crazy bc they did the same thing when Brandy was casted as the black Cinderella on ABC. That cast was soooooooooo diverse and people said it’s not believable. Im right there with you, I cried waychinh this trailer. Ive only seen Wicked once at the ASU gammage theatre snd it gave me so much LIFE! Sadly, some of the other reactions ive seen were shocking to say the least. Some reactors got real nit picky at some aspects of the trailer such as the slight change from the song popular and even more upsetting was that some people had the disgusting opinion that Elphaba shouldnt be played by a black woman, like for real? This looks AMAZING and people shouldnt get themselves all bunched up just yet. Wait until you see the movie ffs! I was initially leery about Arianna Grande playing Galinda but after seeing a small video where it showed her gettimg the call that she got the part of Galinda, she was crying and said she wanted to do the part respectfully and in a seperate segment she just emphasized how important it was for her to do the role as faithful to the source Broadway show. I feel bad because Im spacing on the original Galindas actress's name but you can clearly see how shes trying to do her best to emulate her sound. I know this video is really old - but I wanted to say that I had just kind of shrugged at the fact they cast a black woman in this role. I didn't really see that it mattered too much (after all the character is green - why would it matter if the actress playing her was black, white, asian). Because I'm an idiot and it didn't really click with me until watching this (before I've seen the movie) that it's actually made BETTER by casting a black woman.
So I am curious....as a professional makeup artist who specifically has done the makeup for Elphaba's character, what do you think of the makeup they did on her in the movie? To me, It looks SO MUCH BETTER than the ugly CGI witch face they did in Oz the Great and Powerful. Yes, she's green and she has the FABULOUS glasses, but it seems like they are still letting her expressions and emotions shine through on her face. Its not fake.

I’ve wanted her role for the role since I’ve seen her in Harriet
I am soooo excited too!!! The only thing that has me worried is the splitting in 2 parts; my fear is that people who don't know the show will be left wanting by the first half, since so many of the emotional gut punches, plot twists and tie-ins to the Wizard of Oz happen in Act 2. I hope they found a good balance with that somehow, so that Wicked part 1 will still feel like a complete movie experience of its own.
I think they thought a lot of this out and I believe it will surprise us! I’m expecting the best
Ending of part 1 was so spectacular it was perfect, no problem waiting for part 2
Having now seen the movie, I have to say Cynthia playing Elphaba was such a profound choice. You actually entirely believe her portrayal as an outcast in a way that just doesn’t wash with others who have played the role on stage.
This movie is very very special and has a whole new layer of depth due to the casting choices.
I absolutely loved it. Ariana is so funny. Cynthia is mind blowing. You cannot take your eyes off her. ❤

I’m a 53 year old white British guy who had his first ever experience of Wicked last night at the cinema with my eldest daughter and had tingles all the way through, and your video gave me tingles like you were having too, I also couldn’t work out why but the film hit me emotionally, I have always been a bit of an outcast/ different, and having 2 daughters means I love anything to do with girls and women being brave enough to be who they are and stay true to themselves despite what the world thinks or says about them because they are threatened by their strength and honest forthrightness, and I think you must have had a much bigger and more powerful connection as a black woman? I've been to see it 3 times and each time you end up seeing so much more that you missed before. Just watched a few interviews with Cynthia where she mentioned that all the hair, makeup, nails etc were her choices. They asked her specifically what she wanted and they listened. I love that!

The movie seems like it's going to be a pretty good interpretation of the musical with serious nods to both Maguire's novel and the 1939 film. I think the novel (more than the musical) hits on themes of manipulating public image for power and it looks like we're definitely going to see some plot lines around that. And the art deco themes are soooo nostalgic.

Seeing Idina Menzel live during her run on Wicked makes me extremely bias. Not only did I love the play but I love her singing Defying Gravity and feel like no one does that song justice like her! So I was very skeptical when I heard they were turning it into a movie. But honey, Cynthia is EVERYTHING and so is this trailer!!!! From her gorgeous face shinning through even caked in green makeup and extra long hair (especially the scene with just standing there while Glinda waves her wand), or her incredible voice that gives me chills with those multiple ripples IN ONE BREATH and her acting which makes me think she is a theatre kid because that one second line “you have no real power” was so freaking powerful. I seriously can not take how excited I am for this remake. And I honestly did not think I wold be this excited because I Stan Idina and Kristen. BTW Ariana is coming across as an AMAZING and the prefect Glinda, like she was literally made for this part but I’m just showing praise to my black queen in this comment 🩷

I was 16 when Cinderella with Brandy and Whitney came out and I have been a trained dancer since I was 3 so my dance studio owner planned a special night for us to watch it and I was only one of three black girl’s in the studio and we were all so excited and enamored by seeing a black Disney princess! The next year I was given a principal position in our ballet production of Swan Lake and later booked the part of the sugar plum fairy in the Nutcracker! I will never forget the little beautiful black girls coming up to me after the ballet and saying they wanted to dance! I truly wish Thanksgiving was tomorrow lol! I know I’m going to need tissue while watching Cynthia as Elphaba!

I'm not a fan of Ariana so I was a little biased against the movie vs. it live. But Cynthia makes me want to cry with her performance in the trailer alone. And honestly, I'm liking Ariana as Galinda as well. But having Cynthia as Elpheba gives me literal goosebumps. Appreciate your reaction!

I think it’s a good change for the casting of Elphaba. I just watched the movie and I was amazed at how she portrayed the character and her singing voice is amazing. I hope you enjoy the movie because I know I did.

Cynthia pushed to have hairstyles like micro braids, she knew it was an important part of her story in playing the part of Elphaba. Fun fact - the make up department on the film never created 1 big batch of green make up, so they had to make it every day. Unfortunately it was made up of so many colours, that it was never the exact same shade as the day before!

When the first trailer came out I saw a video where this guy reviewed it and essentially said that the casting was forced diversity and I about LOST MY FUCKING MIND. It absolutely ENFURIATES me to see people disregard the blatant meaning behind the story of Wicked and everything it represents. Having Elphaba be a black woman and ON THE BIG SCREEN is the culmination of everything Wicked should have been and I can't say enough good things about this movie ❤
It’s so crazy bc they did the same thing when Brandy was casted as the black Cinderella on ABC. That cast was soooooooooo diverse and people said it’s not believable. The reason why we create is to create a world we don’t see but we want to see! That’s the meaning of art to me anyway. Thank you for watching

Im right there with you, I cried waychinh this trailer. Ive only seen Wicked once at the ASU gammage theatre snd it gave me so much LIFE! Sadly, some of the other reactions ive seen were shocking to say the least. Some reactors got real nit picky at some aspects of the trailer such as the slight change from the song popular and even more upsetting was that some people had the disgusting opinion that Elphaba shouldnt be played by a black woman, like for real? This looks AMAZING and people shouldnt get themselves all bunched up just yet. Wait until you see the movie ffs! I was initially leery about Arianna Grande playing Galinda but after seeing a small video where it showed her gettimg the call that she got the part of Galinda, she was crying and said she wanted to do the part respectfully and in a seperate segment she just emphasized how important it was for her to do the role as faithful to the source Broadway show. I feel bad because Im spacing on the original Galindas actress's name but you can clearly see how shes trying to do her best to emulate her sound. I am just beyond excited for this to come out and everything from the sets to the costumes look gorgeous. Thank you for your beautiful reaction! Much love!

Some people might say they hate the fact that Elphaba is being play by a black actress but I love it the roll fits her so well , she's a good actress and her voice oh my God it's wonderful and beautiful and I'm not just saying it cause I'm black .Today many black people face criticism for their color and the fact that Cynthia is playing or acting as Elphaba is really connected to how it is in the normal life today .I just wanna say she's beautiful, charismatic and she's got an amazing voice she's just great and awesome and anyone who criticizes her for acting this part because she's black,I just wanna say your foolish for focusing on her color and criticizing her

well, it's Ariana Grande that's causing this. People think Ariana is so mean and wrecked a family by pulling the husband away, but:
1. That is not what actually happened. The man left the home. Ariana never did anything to seperate the man from the family. She even held their new baby.
2. The information people got was not fully accurate and the website who published this fixed the article with false information. Ariana was just mentioned in the original and there was a seperate article that said the words "colleteral damage". People only pieced them together. Ariana's name was too big.
This comment is very random but also one thing: Ariana Grande isn't the only human in this movie. People should watch this because of Cynthia's amazing voice. People just have way too many opinions. I love this movie already!

I know this video is really old - but I wanted to say that I had just kind of shrugged at the fact they cast a black woman in this role. I didn't really see that it mattered too much (after all the character is green - why would it matter if the actress playing her was black, white, asian).
Because I'm an idiot and it didn't really click with me until watching this (before I've seen the movie) that it's actually made BETTER by casting a black woman.

So I am curious....as a professional makeup artist who specifically has done the makeup for Elphaba's character, what do you think of the makeup they did on her in the movie? To me, It looks SO MUCH BETTER than the ugly CGI witch face they did in Oz the Great and Powerful. Yes, she's green and she has the FABULOUS glasses, but it seems like they are still letting her expressions and emotions shine through on her face. Its not fake.
