Hikaru is actually a good interviewer, at least for chess. The questions were very interesting and there was a good equilibrium of him speaking and him letting Garry speak
Great to see that Kasparovs view of chess' evolution in the past years is so progressive, that he understands that progression is both good and necessary for the game
"I was so excited to see the future of chess wasn't a trench war, but instead a Blitzkrieg." I absolutely love Garry's perspective on the game of chess, and as well as how the once-best player in the world sees the game.
This is an awesome interview! Dating myself, I’ve been a fan of Garry since the 80s! Some people criticize Hikaru for been an aggressive competitor. Garry is one of the most aggressive competitors ever, in any sporting genre! On the level of Michael Jordan!
Thank you, Hikaru, for bringing us this great interview with the man many consider to be history's best chess player (I'm a Fischer guy myself, but I can respect the Kasparov argument). Garry is a link to past greats, as he played against such legends as Tal, Smyslov, Petrosian, and Botvinnik.
I have a lot of respect for Kasparov, he is good at looking at things from a unique angle and bringind new ideas. Very good interview. And Hikaru did a great job as a host.
Kasparov is so well spoken, this man is more articulate in his second language than most people are in their primary language. This man’s genius truly transcends the game of chess, I encourage anyone interested to look into his personal and political life. Gary chess deserves to have his voice heard
Kasparov was the first big time chess player I ever heard of as a kid ...and it was because he lost (deep blue ) and since going on to learn some more about him and other chess greats he still remains probably my favourite chess player of all time ...Although lil ole MC is a close second but I have a huge respect for Kasparov as a chess player and as a person it's great to see him still using his abilities to give even more chess access to people that maybe grew up hearing his name but maybe not always knowing exactly who he was ...Yes he's older and doesn't play competitively anymore but that vast wealth of knowledge and information is a great thing to pass on to people of all levels ...Its one thing to read or hear his games/stories second hand but to learn from such a genius first hand would be a truly memorable experience
it's quite unfortunate that Gary Chess, the inventor of chess, has a mic and camera from the same era over 1500 years ago as his original invention of the game of chess.
The opera comparison is great. Pogchamps was never competing with classical chess competitions, in the same way reality TV shows aren't really competing with live performance art.
Gary's comment on GM's providing perspective vs. a computer bar flipping from +1 to -5 is key to Hikaru's success. During his subscriber games Hikaru constantly assesses positions; candidate moves, and objectives. It is a far better teaching method than just seeing the Alpha evaluation.
I really like that final point, that no one style has dominated over a consistent time. Just shows the push and pull between aggressive tactical and suffocating strategical play
Russian here, there's an easy explanation for this: schools, the foundation of our English knowledge, teach us British English. As someone who grew up on the English-speaking internet, my accent is quite weird: imagine a Russian trying his best to sound English, all while using American vocabulary
I was growing up in Yugoslavia and watched in Belgrade the famous match of Russia against rest of the world on 10 boards. Fisher then destroyed Petrosian, the world champion at the time om the first board by winning first 3 games and drawing last, if I remember correctly! At that time , Petrosian could actually make a draw against any player in the wprld except Fisher because of his agressive attacking style going for the check mating king. In one particular game, Petrosian already castled on short side, but then Fisher attacked and forced Petrosian to move his king from kings side to queen side. Just as Petrosian almost made it to safety of the queen side Fisher check mate him one move away from safety. This brings me now to the key point regarding Alpha Zero attacking style. It seems to me that both Kasparov and Nichikori have singled out the pawn move h4 to h5 as a greteat novelty of Alpha Zero. The classical wisdom would consider that a bad move. However, by observing several games of Alpha Zero against Stockfish I found a much more interesting and glaring pattern! Attacking style of Talj was to sacrifice a lot of material to create checkmate situations. Sometimes, the deep analysis determined that not all of them were fully justified. Yet, I found that in many games Alpha Zero sacrifies a lot of material not only to create check mate situation, but along the way at the same time develops its pieces into commending position on the board which at the same time makes opposing pieces completely ineffective as they often did not even make it from their starting position. Thus, the material advantage did not matter at all. This ultimately results in either checkmate or forces the return of all extra material plus some to prevent checkmate. Is my assessment correct? My last observation is that chess resulted in so many draws and in the boring games before Alpha Zero. For example it led to Magnus Carlsen such a control of the end game that he would convert his minute postitonal differences into eventual win after exausrting extra 100 plus moves! The big problem with classical chess is that it has allowed the castle move. This in a single step which would otherwise talke many more moves to get to that position, created the protection of the king which becomes then difficult to penetrate! If castle is not allowed chess would be much more dynamic and interesting game as each side would have to spend extra steps to either protect its king or instead spend it to atack opposing king as soon s possible! Final comment: why not alow each side to play with the help of the computer which would prevent inevitable human blunders from taking place due to exhaustion and blind spots! I appologise for taking this much space for my comments! Nevertheless, I woould appreciate very much tohear the thoughts of these two world legends, with Kasparov being a coach of Nakamura at some point!
