    Wow! I can't believe how many comments have pretty much accused Fancy-Free RV of lying! The title does NOT say "how YOU can build a compost toilet under $4", it's "How WE built a compost toilet for under $4", and that's exactly what they (she) did! Give me a break people!! Give HER a break!

    • @FancyFreeRV
      @FancyFreeRV  6 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Thank you, Pam!! Not sure why they would be so angry for getting a free design idea. Maybe they're just jealous that I have the guts to actually help build one and use it 😇😂😂

      Pam, I was thinking the same thing. Besides, this build is still less than anything on the market. I'm personally taking this idea and adding some of my thoughts for my build. Thank you.

      @@FancyFreeRV That's a BRILLIANT idea!! WTG!! I can think of a LOT of other things that I could spend $1000 on (whether it/they be needs or wants) rather than a "Natures Head" composting toilet!! I can only imagine how many campers/RV-ers/Van dwellers,etc., will be using "your" composting toilet because yours is almost exactly like the ones costing a small fortune!!

    Used one in our cabin for several months before plumbing could be installed. 5 gallon bucket, bag, cedar shavings from pet store. No smell, no out in 20 below weather at night, was amazing. Picked up urine bags from sportsman,s warehouse with absorber gel. Cheap, efficient.

    One of the things I've heard elsewhere, that I don't always see mentioned - as far as the potential odors coming from a composting toilet, is that separating the urine from the feces is the key. The Urine can be diluted with water & then dumped around shrubs & serve as a nutrient. Diluting it is a good idea so it won't "burn" the plants. The feces in a medium like coir, sawdust, with shredded paper - ie: junkmail - will all break down together & turn into compost. You can buy activators used in composting to facilitate & accelerate the process. Compost - once aged properly - has no bad odors.

    • @FancyFreeRV
      @FancyFreeRV  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Okay cool!!! Thanks for the tip of diluting the urine with water! Even though we don't think it stinks, not sure why we haven't tried that yet just to see what would happen 🤔 We jut needed that simple idea pushed into our heads, so thank you Cheryl! 🤗

  • @Tsiri09

    A Nature's head (popular for some reason) composting toilet costs nearly a thousand dollars before shipping. It requires an electrical hookup to work most efficiently. $4 is a FAR BETTER price to pay for essentially the same thing. So what if someone has to pay "more" because they don't have everything on hand? It's still cheaper than commercial - made.

      Tina Gallagher They're well over $1000 now from what I saw, but I have to say that for me, looking into something for an off grid house, this is a little crude. Having said that, there is no reason that something like this wouldn't work for an RV, or fish camp sort of thing. If someone is handy, they could even make something better for under $100

    First off thanks for search clear instructions on the how to. You know most of us are visual Learners so it was great to see it not just reading instruction page. I'm new to this... As a woman when we sit down how do we make sure that the urine goes into the final area? Next question is do you just dig a hole in the ground and dump the bucket feces part into it? I'm new into the idea of if we were to have a local or a national power outage and I'm just trying to figure out what to do with a head of time! Thank you very much for keeping making a great video! Very clear and easy to understand dot-dot-dot and the results are very impressive!

      @FancyFreeRV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Laura! Thanks for watching and asking such great questions. I'm so glad you enjoyed my video. As far as aiming goes, I have not had an issue but I'm always careful. With the solids, it wouldn't be illegal to dig a hole and dump the contents out of the bag but we tend to throw it in the trash.

    Oh my goodness I love this video! Thank you so much for all of it! You make it look so easy. I'm a little nervous but I know I need to get over it! I love this! I have not looked yet but if you were going to perhaps to design a side kit to put the mulch in next to the composting toilet, would it have the same shape as the toilet? I can't get over how beautiful this is. You see I clean for a living so I'm always upside down with my head and somebody's toilet or shower or tub. And now I'm building a shuttle. And I want to build this nope I'm going to build this! I cannot wait! I was watching this and thought oh my gosh if I didn't want the wood look I could possibly get the stick on tile or laminate flooring I guess it's called?

    Thanks so much for this video!!! I love the way this one looks opposed to the plain square box's. I plan to follow your lead on this one & also to save myself some $$ and use a funnel for the diverter, rather then waste more $$ on something I can accomplish for much less.
    I don't even have my rig yet but no matter what I wind up with I'm going to be using a composting toilet so why not be a step ahead of the game?

      We always would spray the funnel after each use with our cleaning solution. And we changed out the jug about once a month because, as you may or may not know, plastic absorbs odors so it's a good idea to keep things clean. Thank you for watching and commenting. Much appreciated ☺️

    • @FancyFreeRV
      @FancyFreeRV  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great question, Janice! This is obviously much different than using a regular toilet where you can sit pretty much anywhere because you have the whole toilet bowl. So for me (Kati), as a fellow woman, in order to not make a huge mess, I do have to sit forward more to hit the funnel. So far, it's worked out pretty well for me :) Thanks for watching and asking such an important question!

    Wondering how good the aim is to hit that funnel? Is there alot of clean up due to bad aim?
    Is there a reason you didnt run the urine into your grey tank? Thanks!

    • @FancyFreeRV
      @FancyFreeRV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great questions, Cheryl! The aim isn't as difficult as you may think but it's obviously a smaller aim than a regular toilet. And as far as not using our black tank, we feel it's much easier to change out the liquids daily rather than let it collect over time, especially when boondocking where a dump station isn't always available.

    I think this toilet design is genius. I have seen others done similarly, but they are always in a box base (which can’t be comfortable. The only disappointment I had is that your video skims through very important design features so quickly that I couldn’t see them! And when I went to the link to see the design, the website wasn’t there. 😢

    The ladies of the household must be very good shots to be able to aim for that small black hole in front... My girlfriend had trouble aiming for a twice the diameter funnel causing spills...
    I decided to get a commercial urine diverting insert to make the toilet more clean (looking)
    Now my composting toilet looks just like a regular toilet be it with a somewhat irregular number two idea bucket.

    This is such a great video and definitely 100% cheaper alternative to nature’s head/air head toilets that are over $1k. I just have one question - Does this smell after someone’s just used it for #2? And how often do you clean the toilet? Another thing is did y’all have to vent the toilet in anyway to minimize the smells?
    Lastly love the beard! My first video of you guys and def will be watching more videos from y’all!

      The peat moss/sawdust or other composting material takes away most smell. Some people use a sub fan & air hose to take away more moisture out of the tiny house or rev, to take away any smell that might linger before the solids are completely dry. Sounds like this would dry it up pretty quickly. Once it's dry, no smell.

    • @FancyFreeRV
      @FancyFreeRV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Sorry for the delayed response. Thank you Lydia and Liz for the wonderful answers! I clean the toilet and funnel as often I would in a house: daily. And we change the 1-gallon jug once a month because that thin plastic absorbs odors fast. And lastly, the faster you add animal bedding on top of fresh #2 the less the smell haha Thank you for watching and commenting. Much appreciated ☺️
