    A vinegar bottle works great in the toilet with the johnny urine diverter. Also, you can cut a slit in the front to see how full the vinegar bottle is. We had that set up in our 5th wheel and didn't use the fan in it. Worked great and didn't smell. Put a little vinegar in the urine bottle....no smell ever. Also, spray the diverter with water vinegar solution. Pete moss over each poop and never any smell.

      Yes my mom Only cleans her toilet with vinegar. In Germany, you can buy a whole cleaning series based on vinegar for kitchen for floors the bathroom really good for the environment

    love it ,you may want to seal the inside with something like flex seal just for easy clean up and it would keep any spills out of the wood ,just a thought ,loving the build

      Hey thank you! We actually out several coats of polycrylic on it to seal it for that reason. It almost feels like glass/plastic now.

    *Great video, tfs!!!* This model has a nicer look to it than the 'boxes' & makes it much easier to put anywhere ya need to. I'm having a MAJOR plumbing issue (?) & live in an RV full time, so I think I'm gonna do exactly what you did but seal off my the main toilet source, etc. Additionally, this will save me a ton of $$$.
    Good luck to the two of you on your bus conversion - I've seen some done that are just AMAZING! Happy Camping to yous from
    the East Coast of the U.S.! ~Peace✌🏽

      Ah that would be great! Yes we love it we are however changing out our diverter, we didn’t love it. The toilet build and shape is great the diverter just wasn’t. Well good look hope you get those plumbing issues all worked out! Thanks for watching!

    Great job on the kerfing and forming!
    Good use of the clamping cauls also.
    I would recommend a couple of small modifications to the build in the future.
    I would start by using a 2 part epoxy.
    The stability and strength of the bend will be increased significantly by using epoxy.
    I would also suggest using a laminate instead of paint to give the ultimate finished look.
    Otherwise, awesome work!!

      Hey I got the template from @modernhousecabin they sell a template for like 10$ it’s well worth the purchase.

    Nice work. Have you been happy with non-churned compost? I've built one and trying to figure out how to mix the mulch.

    • @TheHiveDrive
      @TheHiveDrive  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey we honestly have loved it! We layer compost on top after every use so we go through compost and have to empty faster than if you had a churner but it’s worked great for us.

  • @tybell8899

    @ a minimum, I would fiberglass the entire inside of the toilet. I would fiberglass ALL of it making it waterproof & easy to clean! Well worth the time & effort..

    • @TheHiveDrive
      @TheHiveDrive  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The polycrylic has sealed it and made it waterproof, also the toilet is really just the casing for Johnny compost system which is all plastic and easy to clean. 🤙

    Who knew building a toilet could be so interesting and you tube worthy?? Great job building that pot, Scott. Sorry that rhymes...Good to see it all came together well and it's serving it's purpose for you.Now that you're a few months out and have been going about your business with it, are you still pleased as punch with it??

    Looks good. Would like to make one. Do you have dimensions? How thick the plywood? Spacing of the 59 cuts? How tall? How wide? Where did you buy the bucket kit? Are there plans? Do you intend to install a detachable mixing bail?

    • @TheHiveDrive
      @TheHiveDrive  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey thanks so much. We love it. However we are looking at switching out our urine diverter we don’t love it. We used Johnny compost system. For the dimensions etc i can’t remember I bought the plan from @modernhousecabin and it was perfect!

  • @rangerdanger88
    @rangerdanger88 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great job. Just so you are clear, the medium helps dry out the solids but composting takes a long time for it to become "just soil." As such....the term, "composting toilet" is a bit misleading. Enjoy!

    • @TheHiveDrive
      @TheHiveDrive  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey thanks! Oh yeh for sure, however all the components of it will become soil, so if we bury it in the ground it will all decompose into soil after about a year.

  • @henryanderson7606

    It takes 6 months for poop to compost but the idea in nice nice build a valve on the urine diverter and a spray bottle to use after pee would take care of urine odor

    • @TheHiveDrive
      @TheHiveDrive  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh for sure but it turns none the less, and yes we installed a spray bidet for that reason and it works great 👍🏼

  • @AM-ou1wt

    Hello- How is it working for you? I think the answer to that is incredibly important. I can find its of builds but no further information on how these things are working long term for the DIY. Thanks for any updates.

    • @TheHiveDrive
      @TheHiveDrive  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey honestly it been good, however we are switching out to diverter. The Johnny compost system just wasn’t working for us. The way it was set up we just didn’t feel like we could “go” normally, it’s like we had to be careful to make sure the fluids didn’t splash back into the composting area.

    Hey great video! I love a good compost toilet video haha. I have made a few on my channel. My question for you is how will you be connecting to your grey water system? We connected our composting toilet and built a pee trap. But I'm wondering if that's necessary or if there is another way of doing it? Whats your plan there?

    • @TheHiveDrive
      @TheHiveDrive  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey there! Our current plan to use a Hepvo Waterless Waste Valve it acts like a p-trap but with a membrane instead of using water.

      I actually just today heard of Kildwick brand [urine separator for compost toilets]. Idk if it works any btr than the other, I'm just beginning my journey into toilet research 😂🤣 & what works best for me. Just an fyi.
