Blue Beetle is among DC's many household names, but he never appeared in the DC Animated Universe...or did he? Well, he certainly tried to, over and over and over again. Will the Blue Beetle canon? That is The Question. Wait, no...

I genuinely hope that we someday see the teen titans and some more members of the JSA or at the very a cameo from morbius aka dream
"But I'm actually upset at how much fun I'm having with this game" HA HA HA no
Anyone who's "played" this "game" for more than fifteen minutes will tell you, it's just the same thing, over and over again, and it plays itself so the only thing you're really doing is gear management (the boring part of Diablo, RPGs, etc.) and clicking "do the dungeon" again. And again. And again. In the hopes you'll buy Premium Gacha Spins for a chance at "rare" characters to grind tedium with.
Wait I thought Raid: Shmadwo Strangler of the Innocent Children were defunked and wouldn't bother people anymore why is this predatory "game" which is only rivaled by the RPG assassin's creed games in their anti-consumer practices still going? I thought there were anti-gambling laws placed to prevent this?
(I'm sorry for the rant, nobody cares)

Sellout
You forgot to mention that the golden age Blue Beetle's superpower was a wireless radio telephone, which was science fiction at the time.
Ted Kord was completely forgotten in the DCAU, just like Nite Owl in the Watchmen show. They truly are brothers from different universes
They allude to Dan. He's in jail apparently and also made Silk Spectre the huge dildo :/
They mention Nite Owl is in Prison in the Watchmen Show
@@calvinmann5773
I know, but that doesn't erase the fact he was miserably ignored by the writers, especially when we consider how horrible his life became after the events of the original novel. Dan deserved much more than having his happy ending with Laurie completely ruined off-screen. Also, it doesn't make sense that Dan broke up with Laurie because he wanted children and she to fight crime, as, knowing the personalities of the characters in the novel, it should have been the other way around. At Least "Doomsday Clock" Respected Their Shared Happy Ending
Well at least with Ted, they TRIED to convince DC. Dan just got the middle finger from everyone.
@@hellishkid9566
Yeah, too bad Daniel is considered by everyone simply as "Rorschach's wh*re". He's honestly a pretty cool and badass character
I think Kords best representation is the 15 minute short by DC showcase. It’s a love letter to Blue beetle and Charlton comics :) and Ted is voiced by anakin from the clone wars
not to mention, the way it emulated the legendary iconic 1960's Spider-Man cartoon, since the Charlton characters that DC absorbed were all pretty much created BY Steve Ditko.
@@Batmanisbestpony yeah, I find it really charming that they intentionally do the animation errors and mis-colourings
Polka squad 😁
Also Batman the Brave and the Bold
@@Ka-Ping That brave and the bold episode was awesome!
According to my friend who is also a comic book writer, "No one knew who owned the rights." Which pretty much summarizes the craziness with the radio show rights. You never know what heirs to radio play would just come out of the woodwork. Best to wait until those rights lapse. So in other words, they didn't know who owned him for media, but they knew when it expired.
Coming from the old-time radio fandom ... yup. Episodes of Blue Beetle circulated widely online as far back as the early 2000s (and let me tell you, they are INSANE to listen to), so obviously nobody was keeping very close tabs on the show, but a more high-profile use like an appearance in a DCAU cartoon could have set off an alarm in some lawyer's office somewhere.
Reminds me of how a person recently claimed to be the heiress of an old comic writer and claimed ownership over the Green Lama, a fairly obscure golden age hero whose main call to fame lately was appearing in an all public domain team. I don't think the person ever did anything with Lama since.
@@amelialonelyfart8848 Interesting. What was the public domain team called?
@@chocov1233 Project Super Powers
I LOVED the Blue Beetle's short film of the DC Showcase collection. It was great to see Ted and the other heroes that made up the "proto-Watchmen" in an adventure that mimicked the style of the '60s Spider-Man series.
And go figure it was written by Jeremy Adams who has written arguably the best flash run in over a decade
I remember when the TV show Arrow kept teasing the character of Ted Kord, because the producers wanted him to appear in the show's third season. However, they were told that "they had other plans for the character", so they had to replace him with a version of Ray Palmer's Atom that was definitely inspired by Blue Beetle. It was also clear that they didn't initially consider having Ray Palmer because they even had his longtime love interest Jean Loring in the previous season, and there weren't even attempts in tying the two together.
I always found it rather weird how Arrow couldn't have used Blue Beetle in 2014 because of "other plans" that turned out to be a movie that's literally coming out *NOW*, almost a decade later.
However, I now wonder if the legal issues you've mentioned in the video are the actual reason. Like, Smallville got to use him for an episode, but it would have been an issue if he was going to show up for an entire story arc, especially one that led to a spin-off in which he could have been a main character.
It would make much more sense than WB saying "we have other plans" and then only unfolding those plans 10 years later
I remember how there were plans for a Jaime Reyes!Blue Beetle show, and there was even test footage shown at Comic-Con like a decade ago (this was some years after the Smallville version, and maybe that's why Arrow couldn't use the character then?)
I remember watching at the time and the episode Ray pops up they actively avoided having characters on screen say his name. They were clearly fighting for that chance until the last second.
It could make sense as well. After all, Smallville had Blue Beetle and Booster Gold in its final episodes as a backdoor pilot. However, that Booster Gold show was meant to be in the Arrowverse, since he was making references to Arrow.@@JamesLawner
Yeah, and Arrow's season one mentioned "Ray and Jean", so they could have at least "masked" that by showcasing that Brandon Routh's character *was* that Ray. Sure, the actress who played Jean Loring was in her 50s, while Routh was in his 30s, but there could have been other ways around, like "yeah in this continuity he's Ray Palmer JUNIOR"@@atlasrises4
@@NIDELLANEUMOr just "yeah, I like milfs"
I love the Turquoise and Green Bromance between Turquoise Tarantula and Green Lantern
I find it crazy that you dive into all sources of ONE character and cross-reference and eliminate other blue beetle “appearances” it’s crazy
The Ted Kord Blue Beetle is my favorite DC hero. He was Batman with a cheery disposition and no sidekicks. My other favorites were Captain Marvel (Shazam), The Spectre (Jim Corrigan), The Huntress (Helena Bertinelli), and The Martian Manhunter. I especially enjoyed the tongue-and-cheek JLA International. I love Guy Gardner, Maxima, and Fire too. Not to forget Bloodwynd . . . he was very cool and, unfortunately, mostly forgotten.
Was losing interest at the beginning of this video, then a single line won my loyalty. "He wore a blue suit, bug mask, and m'ilady hat" is one of the funniest lines I have heard in a very long time and your writers are properly funny so kudos to them!
Epic video, great writing, and content as a whole made this one of my favourite comic videos in a long time. Well played Watchtower Database!
Ted Kord BB will always be the best Blue Beetle. The guy survived Doomsday in the comics. He is the reason the JLI became popular and stayed afloat during the late 80's and 90's. Plus, he's the first hero to fight a eating disorder/weight issues.
Half an hour ago I fid not know Nemesis existed and now I feel offended on his behalf. In half an hour more I'll probably forget he exists again though.
Nemesis is awesome. His backup series in The Brave and the Bold #166-193 by Cary Burkett and Dan Spiegle is some great comics.
Not gonna lie, I forgot he existed by the end of the video. Then I read your comment.
I just love the editing and the energy these videos have.
I think this is fhe closest Nemesis will ever get to having his own video on this channel.
I love Ted Lord’s team ups with his best friend Booster Gold. I also loved his cross over with Batman we need more of it because they seem like they would get along just fine.

The green lantern booster gold joke at 7:06 is peak comedy
I feel like Ted Kord’s humor would have fit right in the DCAU
I’d like to see Anarky, Hush (lol), Killer Moth, Nocturna, Lady Shiva, Black Lightning, Richard Dragon, Superboy, and Black Orchid.
Ted Kord's death was very sad, but it's good to know that Maxwell Lord made him a more open-minded person 😉
Too soon.
Bro....
Maxwell Lord also became open minded in Game of Thrones.
@@TrumbullComicc'mon it's been 18 years man. Porn stars have been born since then
@@richborn6700I'll never forgive DC for that.
I remember in the comics Blue Beetle(Ted Kord) paling around with Booster Gold a lot would have translated well for the animated shows.
To answer the question of the day, I want Damien Wayne and Jonathan Kent as Robin and Superboy in the DCAU.
You know if they put Damian in the DCAU they would make him the most boring edgy white boy.
Is he ever actually called superboy?
No it just raises more questions
@thatmovienitpicker8070 That was his first super hero identity.
I'd rather Connor Kent. The Super kids have been ruined by that Superman and Lois show
Based off the ending, I can’t wait for their return.
I’d want Artemis from Young Justice to appear in the DCAU (if she hasn’t already that is in her old interpretation), kinda like how Miss Martian seems to have done “recently.” (I don’t know when that came out and I haven’t seen it, I just vaguely remember hearing it counted as DCAU).
2019, and you should TOTALLY watch it! It’s great! Afterwards, check out our video on her DCAU origin!
@@dcauwatchtower I definitely will! 😊

Isn't that the case for a number of classic DC hero monikers like Dinah Drake as the original Black Canary or Alan Scott as the original Green Lantern?

There's actually a Multiversity comic in which we see a reality (Earth-4), in which the Charlton Comics characters are mixed with their Watchmen versions. It's a pretty cool Earth, to be honest
I remember how my city's comic book shops NEVER had *that* issue of Multiversity because everyone kept buying it. Made me stop trying to finish the series altogether
Please do one of these videos for Firestorm in the DCAU
It’s definitely on the list
It's strange how The Question and Captain Atom feature prominently in JLU but somehow Blue Beetle couldn't make it in.
Actually, yeah, Firestorm would be a really cool inclusion! Giving Wally a sidekick with Bart would be fun, too, and of course Barry.
I have an awful question, though: a lot of the DCAU tie-in comics don’t abide by canon as a series, but it seems like a lot of them would be a-ok on an issue-by-issue basis. Why not “will-it-canon” each standalone story? I mean, aside from how time-consuming that might be (even if it could make for easier-to-research, more frequent Will It Canons 😅)
You just might see a similar thing popping up soon…
I would really love to see Stephanie Brown and Cassandra Cain in the DCAU. It would be weird with Tim presumably never meeting them after what Joker did to him but still
Slightly late but I guess they coukd make them connected to Terry's batman instead of Bruce but thats it
I mean Tim's blond wife in return of the joker could be steph
A Jaime Reyes in DCAU would be killer. SO would a blue Beetle movie in scope of JL vs Fatal Five
That beat at the start of the “Who Is The Blue Beetle?” was hard asl
Wow that’s a wild list of comics with Blue Beetle in them! It’s curious in some ways because my first impression on Blue Beetle was that he is sort of like the straight man to the more reckless Booster Gold. However that doesn’t seem to be the personality that they gave him in that factory battle comic, since he wanted fortune and fame as much as Booster did. Thank you for talking about these cool stories. Looking forward to seeing the new movie. I enjoy your channel so far.
I always wondered where the Blue Beetle was in the DCAU. I wanted him to appear in Justice League Unlimited
I swear Dan Garett absolutely got the short end of the stick when it comes to Blue Beetle in extended media aside from radio, at best making small cameo apperances in the Batman TBatB cartoon and Young Justice.
At least JL Infinity kept him alive unlike all those other adaptations that have him die before we even get to know him. Love Ted Kord and would love to see him tutor Jaime mkre often.
Why is Nemesis named Nemesis? It sounds like he should be, well, a nemesis to the league.
Because he is the Nemesis of All Criminals
Or something
You guys are amazing. Very well done! James has quickly become my second favorite comic book adjacent James (though, number one non-Austrailian James). Just wanted to say thank you and to keep being awesome
That is very high praise, m8
You truly made my day better. Your videos mean so much to me.
(Also, i just started reading Project Superpowers, which features a public domain but also legally distinct version of the Dan Garret Blue Beetle)
How are you reading that? I've read a bit of it in a preview and really like it but I'm not sure how to read the rest
That set up for the sponsor killed me, I love it.
Another stupendous, informative, and timely video, and...wait, wha just happened?! ...OH MY GOD, he lives!!!
The Green Lantern/Booster Gold joke is so so funny - great reference
Has Raid outlived Audible TH-cam sponsorships?
If there's one thing that continues to keep me invested in DC and Marvel media over the years, it's that I'm always learning something new as far as getting to be more familiarized with their decades long assortment of different characters from the pages of the comics.
It is a shame to know that Blue Beetle had been stuck in sort of a legal limbo around the time I was watching JLU on TV, preventing me from being able to get any real introduction to him then like the DCAU had given me for other characters, but at least now we can say they've been freed enough to actually be seeing him get his own big budget movie adaptation. I more than welcome seeing WB really pull from their vast well of DC characters that could be brought to screen outside of just the most famous ones like Batman and Superman, and I'll certainly be interested in giving Blue Beetle's new movie a watch when I have the opportunity.
I watched Justice League since the first episode when I was a kid -- I was a comic and super hero obsessed child and of course I bought any of the DCAU-style comics that featured one of my favorite super heroes at the time Blue Beetle. The one character I truly wanted to see more than anyone was Plastic Man, though, and he got even less respect than BB. I remember when the Metamorpho episode came out I was disappointed to see someone who could stretch but not have it be Plas, and then seeing Elongated Man in Unlimited felt like a slap to the face.
Cool video Ted is an understated favorite, but I’d like to see Donna Troy in the DCAU
I agree he doesn't really get his due. People just remember him as a punchline, essentially. He did have a number of serious adventures tho. For a time he was sort of like a combination of Batman and Iron Man. He was a very wealthy CEO who was also a genius scientist and inventor but not full-on Tony Stark territory, tho definitely more lighthearted than Bruce Wayne. I would recommend the Charlton comics and the first eight or so issues of Len Wein's run if you've not read them. They're super fun. They're still some of my favorite comics. The Len Wein issues might be my favorite short DC run outside of the DCAU and The Spirit
While Psycho Pirate appeared in cameos, i would've liked to have seen more of him in actual role. I also wish Firestorm, Black Lightning, & Lady Shiva showed up
Good Job Data buds, Selling out to Raid. We've all waited the day this would happen. ❤❤❤
I love Ted Kord’s costume and his Bug aircraft.
Awesome video, very entertaining.😊 Your knowledge of the DCAU is truly astonishing, from every little appearance and reference of the Turquoise Tarantula, I was very impressed.
Now I'm going to go eat some cake and find out who this Nemesis person is.
Looking forward to your next video.🙂💛
I'm really waiting for the day the DCAU gets it's own interpretation of Nemesis. Oh wait.
This type of editing is funny, keep it coming
Why Y’all Disrespecting My Boy Nemesis?

Just took us an entire year’s worth of story finale to get there 😅
Quite a few characters I'd like to see in the DCAU. Starfire, Simon Baz, Natasha Irons becoming Steel, and Stephanie Brown.
Who really cares about Natasha? Stephanie is barely even worth mentioning... then they made Iceman'd Tim sooooooo she's even less of a person of interest now.

Congrats on the Raid Sponsorship!
I’ve been a blue beetle fan almost as long as I’ve been a fan of anything, ever since I was a kid watching Batman brave and the bold I loved seeing young Jaime with Batman
"But Blue Beetle never had s*x with Malin Akerman inside the bug"
Let's be honest. Not just Ted, but all of us, would have LOVED the right to say we did that. Patrick Wilson is such a lucky bastard...
Kind of crazy to me that General Eiling made a “DCAU” comics appearance before he even showed up in the actual JL/U series.
That's all over the older comics
Like for example, Vandal Savage and Gorilla Grodd made DCAU comics appearances long before they became major threats in JL/U
Thank you for making this one! Loved it. As for who I'd love to see in the DCAU - Firestorm (Classic Ronnie Raymond/Dr. Stein version) and heck, Jaime Reyes Blue Beetle! Both were great in Justice Action. Speaking of Justice League Action....any chance you gentlemen will be visiting that show down the road? :)
We mostly focus on the DCAU here, but it’s not impossible! Don’t currently have any video ideas for that show but maybe someday.
@dcauwatchtower But how do you know that show isn't in the DCAU huh?

This was a great video. It was a long and winding road but Blue Beetle finally made it to the end go Justice League a u membership. Or a dcau membership. Also you inform me of Dan Garrett the police officer Blue Beetle who I was unaware existed. Thanks for that.
I want everyone in the watchtower database in the dcau so they can give us hard evidence for characters
Charlton Comics was very dodgy in managing the rights to their characters and properties during their collapse in the 1980s, to the point that Mort Todd (a noted comic book creator) argued that basically almost of Charlton's work is technically public domain, and that DC had to re-registered the trademarks to the Charlton heroes they acquired.
14:30 NGL, Cisco's superhero name could also use an update, barely anyone uses "vibe" as in mood anymore and I think even "vibe check" fell out of use in recent years.
I mean, it refers to vibrations
@@dcauwatchtower
They used him and “Cynthia” on the Flash TV show, too.
Apparently they didn’t have any problems with either character’s name sin tbe Arrowverse 🎉
i love how increasingly unhinged he becomes lol
I want Jaime Reyes to be in the DCAU. Leo Quintum would be pretty cool too, maybe he could be a redeemed Lex returned from the Source Wall to help Superman in the Beyond era.
That would kind of fit with how they replaced a lot of classic characters with their legacy versions, like Wally West?
13:36 How dare you. Nemesis rocks. The very first article I wrote for BACK ISSUE was about Nemesis, and he teamed up with Batman twice in the DCU. He was also a member of the Suicide Squad, where he told off Amanda Waller TO HER FACE and lived to the tell the tale. He's also come back from the dead and dated Wonder Woman (in that order). I will not stand for this Nemesis disrespect.
Sincerely,
Friend of the Channel John Trumbull (14:24)
And characters I'd like to see in the DCAU:
Blue Beetle (Ted Kord)
Nemesis (in a speaking role)
Green Lantern (Hal Jordan in something more than alternate timeline cameo)
The Teen Titans (Just to definitively establish who's on the team in the DCAU)
The Spectre
The Phantom Stranger
Sandman (Neil Gaiman version)
Swamp Thing
The Reverse Flash
Black Adam
The JSA (Golden Age version)
Plastic Man (Because the League needs two stretchy guys)
Honestly this was a thing I was sadden by after really learning who the Blue Beatle was through Atop the 4th walls series on all three of the characters who took on the role. It’s just sad especially knowing that Booster was in the DCAU but not Ted. Especially cause their chemistry is great. But I will say Brave and the Bold did a great job tributing them
22:56 - 23:02
That Batman clip perfectly being synced with with James rant is the best representation of his pain

I wish the proposed DCAU Teen Titans show ended up being made. Imagine how EPIC it would have been to see the Titans being written by the same creative team behind BTAS, Batman Beyobd, etc, and with those great designs (especially Donna Troy's 🥵👌) by Tommy Tejeda
Same !!!!
I have a soft spot for the 90s DCAU that was Batman The Animated Series and whatever was going on in the comics at the time. We had mullet Superman, Red haired Lex, just to name Batman Adventures 25.
Then you'll love our channel!
Great video ❤ personally I made the jlu comic Canon, but 2 each their own 😅
I think that a big chunk of the reason why they were having issues there is that, at the time, it was when they were starting to push Jaime in the role, but wasn't the one that they wanted to fit into it.
Doubtful given JLU ended the year Jaime made his first appearance
Can't wait for Nemesis: Thee Movie available in theaters August 18th
i would like to see a movie about prometheus taking out the entire justice league and even gives batman a run for he's money .
Or an actual owlman movie with he's insights about life ! love it .
The crime syndicate version of blue beetle is called the scarlet scarab in batman the brave and the bold. since no other name has been given (as far as I knoiw) I usually refer to the one in crisis on two earths by the same name.
27:10 I remember this comic! It was probably my first introduction to Ted Kord and probably my first DCAU tie-in comic which I got as a kid.
Nemesis sounds like he’d be a fun character to use in peacemaker or Amanda Walker series - a super spy innthe DC - sounds fun!
Not gonna lie. When I first saw that character who needs a more inclusive name in JLU, I thought she was suppose to be Mexican since her costume gave off that vibe. She makes a few background appearances before the show finally reveals her name.
P.S. I referenced another DC hero somewhere in my comment.
As a kid I didn’t read too much comics and I didn’t know too much here was besides the main heroes but now as a adult I really wish we saw the Phantom stranger and the Spectre and also John Constantine those are my three characters I really wish we see in the show animation style 😊
This is the one out of like 30 or 40 times I’ve here’d raid shadow that actually kinda makes me want to play
I'm glad you've changed the thumbnail! But my advice is maybe, make the less is more, more consistent for every video. One character front and center with 1-2 words is probably enough. If is slightly "painted" even better
We had it that as the previous one a couple days ago. Always trying new ones to see if it’ll catch more eyes.
@@dcauwatchtower keep experimenting and good luck forward 🙏 hope the channel gets at least consistent viewers like for the previous videos, your work is amazing!
Well Batman the brave and the bold is how I first knew about the Blue Beetle but Marvel has their own Beetle, the Beetle

My memories a little foggy but if he wasn’t in the dcau I would’ve loved to see spectre make an appearance in the show
He was in a couple issues of the tie-in comic, but never in the show! I agree!
