Join me in exploring Setúbal city in Portugal, part of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area.
Well I have mixed feelings about this place 😁😁
But I will return, to explore it more, that's for sure.
Here is the fact dose about the place:
Setúbal has a fascinating history, dating back to ancient times and surviving even the era of dinosaurs. It was named Cetóbriga by the Romans, and its strategic location by the river and sea has been crucial to its growth. The municipality covers an expansive area of 230.33 square kilometers, with a population of about 123,000 people.
People throughout the municipality cultivate delicious treats, from grapes for exquisite wine to oranges, fresh fish, renowned muscatel wine, and delectable cheese and pies.
Both the city and its surrounding areas have remarkable places to visit. Explore the Convento de Jesus, a historical museum, and the São Filipe Fort, now an inn offering breathtaking views. These treasures aren't confined to the city but extend throughout the entire municipality.
The natural beauty of Setúbal is showcased in the Sado Estuary Natural Reserve, home to dolphins, the unique Arrábida Natural Park, and stunning beaches like Figueirinha and Galapos.

For once, Andres, you visited a spot I’ve already visited. 👍🏻 We visited Setubal twice-both day trips while staying in Lisbon. My observations…
(1) 3:51 Agree. No signs. You got that absolutely right. I feel signs at metro, train and bus stations are generally lacking, too confusing or too small. For example, try to figure out where something is at Oriente train station!! Good luck. 🤞🏻
(2) Huh? There are several ways to go from Lisbon to Setubal. We took a bus non-stop from Oriente station to the Setubal train station. Took less than an hour. Not sure why it would take 5 hours from Cascais to Setubal. 🤔
(3) Agree. Residential area next to main train station in Setubal is not the prettiest area. 😕
(4) Agree. Best qualities of any location are: vibe, food and people. Great points. 👍🏻
(5) Huh? From the video, it appears you may have missed most of the historic center of Setubal which is car-free and has many shops and restaurants. Plus the Farmer’s Market along the bay is one of the BEST in all of PT IMO.
(6) Agree. I understand the area between Setubal and Sesimbra is gorgeous. Never visited but be careful. This is where James Bond wife was killed in the movie “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.” 😮😮😮

I will try to explain my journey for 5 hours : Got on train in Cascais, went too far 😁 That's on me...Next - asked in the station how can I get over the bridge to Setúbal, said I need to walk to different station and take train back(confusing that they said to go to different station), found that station, went 8 stops inside Lisbon. Next - could not find train, since I was in metro(took me some time to find it, since NO SIGNS. Found the train station, train just left 😁😁😁 Went to wait train, some guy told me I need to validate ticket downstairs, went back. Finally train arrived and took me to Setúbal, around 1 hour ride.
Yes, now I would manage to do this trip in 2 hours, but as a first timer - never. 😅😅😅 And google directions showed some 3 trains, trams and bus so no help there 🤝🏻
Agree about that I missed some places, let's say this is first part, now when suggestions coming in, I will be much smarter about what should I visit 💯
Only thing what I did not understood is that I asked lot of people questions on the street and they were much more reserved, but I don't know maybe it was the wrong day for me...

In Setubal you have the best fish restaurants and good sea food too. Close to Setubal you have beautiful beaches too.
Agree about beaches, well I've been only in Portinho and Creiro 🙂 I will go to Setúbal once more, so please if you have restaurant to recommend then share it here 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 Thank you
Moscatel is like Porto wine, served in small glasses and not table wine 🙂 like your videos! Hope you" come back to Setúbal with a good guide for the city has more to offer for sure.

03:51 Actually there are signs, the point is that the signs are all in Portuguese. In the metro, to leave into the train station, you need to follow the sign that says "Comboios". You could also have catched the boat that goes to Barreiro and then take the train to Setúbal.
About the platform you need to use, you have to see on the screens in the station which one to use. Again, the screens are all in Portuguese only in most stations. The platforms (marked as "linhas") are actually pretty well signed, at least in the case of Sete Rios.
04:24 If you go from Cascais, you rather go on the train, then take the boat into Cacilhas, the metro to Corroios from Cacilhas and only there the train into Setúbal. It's better than to be in the confusion of Lisbon.
But indeed, if you have a car just use the car. The whole public transit system in Lisbon metro area is based in the city of Lisbon, there are almost no direct connections from the north of Lisbon to the Setúbal region simply because there is not enough demand (the infrastructure is there but people want to go to Lisbon to work, Setúbal is too far away).
Wow man, thank you for your explanation, but still sounds complicated 😁 I will save this info if I go again to Setúbal with public transport. I think I should take the boat it would be easier, since on other side of the river things are bit less confusing.

I think you missed so many interesting places in Setúbal, with so many good restaurants and fresh sardines 😅so many touristic places to visit. You need a good guide next time.

@@millionplacesoneworld , Fortaleza de São Filipe, Mercado do Livramento (In June 2014, the American magazine USA Today recognized Mercado do Livramento as one of the best fish markets in the world), Praça do Bocage, Avenida Luisa Todi, Casa da Baía (Tourist center with good advices), Museum of Archeology and Ethnography (In the area behind this museum you can visit the old town and discover Roman ruins), Parque Urbano de Albarquel. Portinho da Arrábida, Convento da Arrábida.
Best places to eat at restaurants: Avenue Luisa Todi, or in the Avenue José Mourinho near the Doca dos Pescadores, or in Praça Machado dos Santos with plenty restaurants to eat fresh grilled fish.
Travel trought the Ferry and visit Troia (best in summer).
By car you can visit villages near Setúbal Azeitão, Quinta da Bacalhoa, or Palmela and Castelo de Palmela, or Moinho da Maré.
And yes you need at least 2 or 3 days to visit all. I wish best luck next time ;-)

@@millionplacesoneworldI grew up in that city. Long time ago. I revisited the city twice in the last ten years and was very shocked in how it changed.
Until the middle 90es, the citiy had lots of young people on the street, right until 8-10pm. Windows were open and there was life everywhere. Somehow, that radically changed in the last 30 years. Streets will be empty after 7pm and even during the day, most windows are closed shut.
Food was always awesome and still is.
@@tensaibr Thank you for your comment 👍 When I was there people were on the streets like until 6-7, when I walked back to place where I was staying all places were empty. I had plan to go once more to Setúbal in December last year, but didn't manage, so plan is to go now in the April 😉

Boy did I feel badly for you. 5 HOURS! Yikes, you ended up taking to very long way around it seems. But, you know what... this was real life and can easily happen to a foreigner who isn't fluent (in this case) in Portuguese.
I've seen a lot of videos and photos of Setubal... it seems you missed a lot of the best part BUT that just means you will have to go again. It was surprising how unfriendly some people appeared to be. Who knows why!
I think the Arrábida is probably of the lushest and prettiest coastal areas on the Iberian Peninsula!
I am not a foody, but I do get a kick out of watching you enjoy your food!

I don 't advice to go/ to live in Setúbal .
I advice you to visit region of Alentejo and Algarve...
We don't consider Setúbal for living because we need to be on this side of Tagus 👌 But I love Alentejo region 🇵🇹
Watching again... hmmmm not sure! It looks like the unattractive little cousin of Lisboa.
But keep in mind that other viewers said that I didn't go far enough to reach the beautiful part🫡 It depends on where you want to stay. I stayed in a slightly shady part of the city🙂
To go from Cascais to Setubal in transport is easy, take the train to Cais Sodre, then the metro to Jardim Zoologico, and then the train to Setubal, the station have several Tvs with the lines and schedules, line 4 to the south, line 3 to the center, line 2 to Sintra and West and line 1 to North.
In Setubal station go right and u found the center in 200 meters. U have google maps...
Moscatel of Setubal is amazing but the best is from Douro Valley, Favaios Moscatel less sweet more alcool.
Choco Frito is soooo god.
The best Bifana that i taste are the ones of Beira Gare in Lisbon, in front of the Rossio train station, and the Parreirinha do Chile also in Lisbon, in Praça do Chile, metro station Arroios.
Arrabida is such a beautiful place, go to the water in November? Brave. But the colour of that water is inresistable.

Your choice of the depressing music during fly over Setubal was not good. It was interesting to look on Setubal from your eyes. I was in Setubal once and plan to go there soon again.

Thanks for the video , but unfortunately you missed all the great parts of Setubal City. You were close to where all the nice areas start when you stopped to eat but then didn’t continue walking in that direction. You might need to come back and check out the real Setubal City.

@@millionplacesoneworld lovely. I don't think Barreiro is worth it but it it has been improving. This is Just a residencial area but tourists like to take the boat to Barreiro. Some áreas around Barreiro are much more ok and I recomend Montijo and Almada as they are bigger and much to see. I am from Porto.

@@millionplacesoneworld I say that in a constructive way. I saw your video about Setúbal, the images are interesting but you seemed kinda lost, like just wandering. I know that city has a castle, it would be interesting to explore it and tell a little about its history. It has Roman ruins around which are also interesting. Olavo Bilac is one of the greatest poets of his time. What I am trying to say is that there can be more to your videos. You already took the time to go to the place after all.
@enge Thank you for your feedback, I know I missed places, I will revisit Setúbal👌 But at some point my channel is about just wandering around, because most of the time I'm going for the first time and I try to say things which are important about city/town/village, but biggest focus is on how I feel in that place if you know what I mean. For example : if I would go to Paris, I could also skip Eifel tower if that would be how I feel 🫡
