8 years BEFORE The Dark Knight, 17 years BEFORE Logan, there was Unbreakable, by far the most grounded and realistic superhero film in existence!!!

That’s not actually true because there are actually superpowers in this movie, as opposed to Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies, where there are none.
It's cool that you like grounded and realistic SUPERHERO movies, but grounded and realistic does not equal good as a general rule.
When the Unbreakable music started playing during Split I was thinking why is the Unbreakable music playing? It took me a few moments to put it together and it was fucking brilliant!

Ever heard him talk about his work? He's super down to earth. When describing his success he just says, "I come to work on time and prepared. Im respectful to my coworkers and I do my fucking job"
I also think it's one of the best performances by Bruce Willis as well
tardislp. Shyamalan had done wonders with Willis and Sam Jackson. Easily their best acting performances throughout their careers. When even Tarantino, who had worked with both on one of the best movies, says Willis gave his best performance in Unbreakable, then you know you did a splendid job.
It really is, at the end you really feel bad "Mr Glass", dude had a shitty life and tough he was worthless and was really desperate to gain a porpouse (Even if said porpouse is to be a Mass murderer)

It really deserves to be looked at.I have seen a lot of analysis video's on what makes the perfect superhero film..with TDK usually coming out on top, but in my mind, Unbreakable is the perfect superhero film (and even beyond that, it's the perfect film). It has a clearly defined arc, relatable characters..one of the best villains ever conceived and a incredible score and I never get sick of it, no matter how many times I have seen it (and I have seen it a lot!). Pure and simple: Unbreakable is perfection.
nolan palmer such a great well done origin story for both the hero and villain. And yes the score is amazing!

Funny thing is, I was born in the year this movie came out in 2000. Now 18 years old, I watch this movie among the extremely long line of comic book movies and I can't believe how timeless Unbreakable is. It's so refreshing to see a movie that was grounded and portrayed the most realistic hero's journey tale I've ever seen.
Same, i was born in april of 2000. The crazy thing is, i just saw this movie a few min ago. I didnt find it groundbreaking but I can see how it was that. The movie was amazing tho. We were born the same year, saw the movie in different times of our lives and i agree with you that its timeless

Finally, some more love for Unbreakable.
I am part of that small target audience that went batshit over this movie. I rewatch it at least once a year and it absolutely holds up. When I saw Split with no more knowledge of what it was other than a stand-alone character piece and then *gasp* *GASP* *holy crap *GASP* at the end I was seriously beside myself. Clearly I will be rewatching Unbreakable again today💗😁

The amount of realism used with the concept is the coolest part for me. It made so much sense. If you really were unbreakable, you probably wouldn't know. That alone was such a cool idea, and watching him discover that Mr. Glass was right was awesome. Also, it was interesting to see a character with osteogenesis imperfecta. I have that disease, and this was the first movie I've seen where not only was it mentioned, but a character actually had it, and it was portrayed rather accurately. So this movie is unique on multiple levels that really set it apart. Great film. Split was a great follow-up, too. I hope we see James McAvoy in Glass.
People of the world, yank this brilliant film out of the obscurity it's been suffering in for the past 18 years. It is time for it to take its place among the all-time best films.

M Night Shyamalan is the first guy to make an origin story for both the superhero and the supervillain before bringing them together on the screen! Honestly, I'm more excited for 'Glass' than I am for any future MARVEL or DC movies!

Let's take a minute to recognize James Newton Howard's collab with Shyamalan across ALL of his movies. some of the greatest music ever produced. This score is easily one of my favorites, and goddamn, I lost my shit when it started playing at the end of Split, but nothing beats the mood he creates with The Village OST. Stoked for Glass!

i loved Unbreakable because throughout the movie, I wasn't sure if he had super powers or not. I like Movies that aren't predictable.
I fucking adore this movie, ever since you tweeted about it I kept thinking "is he gonna review it?" now that he has i'm insanely happy, one of my top 10 favorite films for sure.
You should review old movies more often
A superhero movie with a never-before-explored concept, which now sounds much more original and necessary to the actual generation.
I think Shyamalan was a better director back then because he wasn't well known and had more control over his movies. He started getting big and was given big budget movies where the studio had more control.
IIRC he had full creative freedom on "The Last Airbender" and that was a dumpster fire.
Glass is gonna be awesome. Never thought I'd be excited for an M. Night Shaymalan movie lol

At the time I preferred it to The Sixth Sense and now...I still do. Brilliant setup, great characters, a twist that binds it all together, love it.

Yeah, everyone who says The Dark Knight blazed the trail for the "gritty/realistic" super hero movie clearly hasn't seen Unbreakable. Great film.
One of the most amazing things about this film is that it almost makes you believe that even in a world as mundane, dull, and mind-numbingly dreary and repetitive as ours, superheroes might actually exist.

Teodor Recabarren it may not be my best movie but it is sure as hell the scariest movie I watched. The scene where Joaquin's character sees the alien for the first time on TV scared the shit out of me as a kid.

Unbreakable is easily M Night’s best film. There are scenes in this film that are just... fucking masterful. The tense and brilliant execution of the scene with Willis saving the kidnapped kids is GREAT. I love this film and while I thought Split was just ok- if Glass is even half as good as unbreakable? Then I’ll finally hop back on the M Night train.

My impression of this movie when it came out was that it was awesome and was the ACTUAL movie that reinvented superheroes. It is perhaps the only movie to do something genuinely new with the genre. My impression is still the same.

Gotta say, I didn't like Unbreakable much back then, because it was too grounded for me. I was more into flashy movies. But nowadays, when every other movie has exploding city blocks, this groundedness is refreshing and Unbreakable works much better for me now.

My son has the condition that Sam Jackson's character has and I can confirm how easy it is for someone with that to break. 2 yrs old and has had over 20 broken bones.

Saw Unbreakable when it first released and thought it was pretty good. Watched it again about a year ago and totally blew me away. This film has aged to perfection. Definitely M Night's masterpiece indeed.

I think the praise/comparison of being hailed as the next Spielberg really sent M. Night Shyamalan downward because it was mixed with vanity.

A lot of people criticize the 'twist' in this movie, but I defend it. First off, I never really saw it as a twist, or at least not like other twists are usually like. The first time I watched this movie and was presented with the idea that there are realistic super-heroes in this world, it got me asking: "What about villains?" And sure enough, the movie answers that by the end. It felt natural.

Love this one. Great plot and character arcs exploring superheroes. And the soundtrack is so good. Can't wait for Glass.
You can tell Unbreakable is an amazing film because knowing the twist does not diminish its impact as a piece of storytelling. There is no gimmick. It's engrossing from start to finish. That's why it commands respect and longevity in a genre now comprised of fire and forget blockbusters.
Has my opinion on Unbreakable changed? Hell yeah it has! I always liked it, but I've grown to love the film even more since the whole comic book film craze started. It has a lot of things that could be good advice too. Be a good film first, then worry about being a superhero/comic book movie
I'd actually watch more of these videos where you review old movies for no other reason than that you wanna talk about them. Hell, even talking about movies you reviewed a long time ago if your opinions changed since then I think would be worth watching :)
One of my favourite films, very underrated and very very good.
I remember I watched this movie at the time and hated it. Although nowadays I could barely recite the bare bones of the plot. Bearing in mind I also hated the Matrix when I saw it at the cinema, maybe I should give it another go???? lol
