You need to purge the air from the system before engine start attempted, or you could cause serious damage to the HPFP. Also a good idea to fill up the empty fuel filter bowl with diesel injector cleaner rather than plain diesel. So you kill two birds with one stone

      There is also another option...
I changed fuel filters on a Golf MK6 TDI 1.6 as follows:
      1. Undid the five Torx bolts.
      2. Demounted fuel filter canister. (You could of course empty filter canister with a siphon or a hand pump and thereby skip procedure step when demounting canister.)
      3. Put diesel fuel from canister into an empty jar.
      4. Removed old fuel filter. Let it drip off. Put it in a disposable plastic bag with paper in it.
      5. Cleaned and wiped interior of canister.
      6. Refitted canister.
      7. Put new fuel filter into canister.
      8. Rebolted fuel filter canister top/lid onto canister. Before rebolting, lubricated new oring with diesel fuel. Then bolted the five Torx screws in a star pattern order.
      9. Accessed fuel delivery pump relay by removing some plastic panels at and around dash board.
      10. Removed the fuel delivery pump relay.
      11. "Bridged" two of the relay sockets using cable combined with a simple electric current switch. One end of cable connected to whatever socket is correct. (Checked connection diagram shown on physical relay). Second cable end connected to socket car battery positive side. Inbetween cable ends, a switch.
      12. Let the fuel delivery pump be activated for appr 30 secs by opening circuit when turned the switch.
      13. Repeated this procedure of activating fuel delivery pump two times.
This way, there is no need for "Power service" nor VCDS. You would not need to pre-fill canister with diesel fuel.
Also, turning key to ignition does activate fuel delivery pump, although, only for some seconds.

@@anderskedegard6799 can you remember the fuel relay number ?

@@colin5064 Quite sure it was 646.
There are two rows of relays beneath steering wheel, to the left on LHDV, behind some plastic panels. There are about five slots per row. Some panels are bolted with some screws.
      On left hand drive vehicle:
To the left, slightly beneath steering wheel, there is a small compartment storage box and opens with a lever.
The box is removable (it can be pulled out from its brackets when fully opened). Some relays are visible through that hole, where the box was fixed. Maybe have to use a torch to spot relays. However, relays are difficult to access at this point.
Firstly, very simple, remove plastic cover of fuses on end edge of dash board.
Secondly, quite simple, remove small compartment storage box from its brackets (if not already done).
Thirdly, a bit tricky, remove gaiter on top of steering wheel. Gaiter is located directly beneath module with meters for speed et.c. Gaiter is glued to plastic trim beneath module, as well as plastic trim on top of steering wheel axle. Gaiter's plastic trims can be pried or pulled off of brackets.
Fourthly, a bit trickier, unscrew two Torx bolts fixing module with meters for speed et.c. Use a torch to spot them. Bolts are located beneath module. Carefully pull module out of its socket. No need to undo connector for module.
Fifthly, quite simple, remove head light control button for fog light et.c.
First, turn button to outmost left (or right) position.
      Second, press button inwards.
Third, turn button so that selector arrow points at 12 o'clock.
Fourth, pull button outwards till it's out of panel socket.
Fifth, release button from its connector.
Sixthly, not very difficult, now there is only one plastic panel to go. It is fixed with four or five bolts. There is a small trim at the top of this plastic panel. As I recall it, that trim can be pried or pulled off. Plastic panel is removed by unscrewing those Torx bolts. Plastic panel has connector. Remove it for convenience.
At this point, all relays should be visible, accessible and removable.
Information about relay pins are printed out on physical relay in question. Think relay has five pins. Each pin has a designated number. Since the relay is a type of switch, one can read out what pin sockets to be bridged.
On the Golf I worked with (a left hand drive vehicle), relay for fuel delivery pump was on second row from top, and second from left (as I recalled). Info about relays and locations are retrievable. I think ELSA has such information. Google "ELSA", "relays" or alike.

Hi, good videos. Just one question for you. Do you need to activate the fuel pump through vcds or some other diagnostic programme before starting the car after you changed the oil filter?
