THE BIG FAST WIND TEST: AKAI GX-210D, PHILIPS N4515, SANSUI SD-5000, TELEFUNKEN 3000, UHER 263

Snelspoeltest met 5 tapedecks: de SANSUI SD-5000, PHILIPS N4515, AKAI GX-210D, UHER Variocord 263 Stereo en de TELEFUNKEN magnetophon 3000 hifi. De 3 motoren decks zijn overduidelijk sneller dan die met 1 en 2 motoren. De winnaar spoelt een 540 meter Philips tape in iets meer dan 2 minuten, de verliezer in deze test doet er ruim 2 minuten langer over.

Interesting test. I have several Sony TC 730 machines and a couple of Dokorder 1120 and they aren't too shabby in the fast wind department either.
The Sony machine is much more reliable than the Dokorder, but I have to say the 1120 looks more beautiful with those spun aluminium knobs and those VU meters.
I love reel to reel machines. Been around these since I was 4 years old.
I have collected around 20 various models and love them all.

I’ve got an Akai x-355 and a 345 , those machines are brutally fast , to the point that it can’t do the tape any favours

Good test - I was wondering about this hard evidence of usability. Conlusion is true - one motor drive is slower. . But after watching I tested two of my TESLA B115/116 which I appreciate but still doubt if AKAI could be much better. TESLA is also 1 motor drive, makes impression of quite speedy and for 18cm/540 meters original Ampex it resulted in 3.00 min With this result squence is unchanged but not bad - only 20 sec more than AKAI.

Excuse me, but I also have an Sansui SD-5000 R2R. It has 4/8 pole hysterezis Synchronus motor for Capstan drive. So it has BELT drive. By my opinion it has a best mechanic all of them. Sicerely.

The capstan is indeed powered by a belt, but is not relevant to this test. The coil dishes are located directly on the axis of the coil motors. See also this video: th-cam.com/video/GJrWL1ZMK4A/w-d-xo.html

De GX210D stopte niet automatisch met spoelen toen de tape op was. Hoort dat zo? De mijne doet dat ook niet, maar heb dacht ik weleens gezien dat dat wel gebeurde. Waar heeft dat mee van doen? Sensing tape of een mechanisch iets?

Hij behoort dat wel te doen, als het afslagtandwiel beschadigd is, dan kan hij zo maar door blijven lopen.....
