Very useful video. Now it's finally clear where you can see this difference. Thanks Fabian! And yes, Happy New Year! Good luck and good shots in the New Year! Your channel is one of the best on this topic, so good luck with the channel too! :) 🎄🍾🥂
Thanks Fabian, great video. I switched from R5 to R1 and happy that the buffer issues have basically gone. I also have the Angelbird 512 card it’s a great offer. Greetings from Zurich!
With my R3 shooting at 30fps in cRAW it didn’t buffer at all. I got to 574 images and stopped since it didn’t buffer and I didn’t want to continue until the card filled. In raw it got to around 180 (low iso) and 145 (high iso).
Hello! I’m thinking of getting the R3 now that the price is dropping. Do you use an older model prime lens with your R3? I already own a EF 500 4.5 USM L and I’m wondering if the R3 will still get the 12 FPS in mechanical shutter using the older prime lenses as well as the 30 in electronic mode.
We are on the same page! Haha. My choice for sports and general photography is to use two Canon R5 Mark II cameras. The 45 MP sensor allows for tighter crops when necessary, and while the R1 has many smart features, the R5 Mark II offers similar near-performance at a lower price. I’ve owned two Canon R3 cameras, but my new R5 Mark IIs are perfect for my photography needs.
Very informative and useful information, I was wondering about the differences especially for the R1, so thank you, I think I will stick to RAW as I hardly shoot more than 10sec in a row.
Great video! I have an R3 and an R7 and loved the comparison of high iso performance. I'm thinking the short buffer of my R7 would particularly benefit from the smaller cRAW file size. I will test and find out. THANK YOU!
Greetings Fabian! Happy New Year! Well, this is frustrating...I just purchased a 1TB OWC Atlas Ultra CF express 4.0 B card that writes at 3000 MB/sec, not realizing my R5Mii can't utilize the CF Express 4.0 B cards properly. I hope there will be an update in the near future allowing it's use. I wonder what big a difference it will make between shooting cRaw vs Raw on the R5Mii for cropping in on images? I also have a R6Mii and find that I greatly appreciate the Raw images on my R5Mii because I can crop in MUCH farther, if needed, than on my R6Mii will allow. With cRaw basically halving the Raw file size, how much crop in can you get?
There's no camera on the market that supports CFE 4.0, and there definitely will not be an update, it's a PCI bus issue, not a software issue. Nothing Canon has released to date even writes to CFE cards at 600MB/s, so the choice of card almost doesn't matter as long as it's reliable. You could see this as a downside or a plus, considering the choice of card will have almost no impact on camera performance, the biggest difference will be in buffer clearing and speed of transferring files. There's no reason not to use a 4.0 card either, it will default to 2.0 speeds and still perform the same as any other. I've tested 9 different CFE cards of different brands and capacities in my R3 and it buffered 149-156 frames with all of them before stopping.
I felt the same, this was one reason I wanted to do this video - to help others! From my experience you can crop about the same with RAW and CRAW if the exposure is correct
@TomislavMoze I just meant from a buffer perspective. Heat dissipation seems to vary with the brand of card as well. For reference I do still use a 4.0 card most of the time, the latest Delkin Black 320gb card.
I was wondering - on the R1 if you shoot to both CF Express cards simultaneously, do you notice a drop in performance? Obviously this is significant on the R5mkII with the SD card, but interested to know on the R1 since the slots are identical.
Hey sir, Can you let me know what kit is better for W ?The Canon EOS R1/R5ii with either the rf L 100-500/200-800 or the Nikon Z8+Z pf 800mm f6.3?Thanks.
I got a fanxiang 2tb card (worth $400) for free since the amazon delivery guy left it on the very side of my porch and the wind blew the box into a puddle of water when it was raining so I contacted amazon and they refunded me while letting me keep the card lol. I also got the R5 II from AVC Photo in Florida for $310 cheaper ($3989 vs $4299). Fully new from an authorized dealer. So I saved $710 in total lol

Thanks this was helpful. The 12800 ISO R1 vs R5 mk2 was revealing. folks have talked about this but perhaps not made the gap that obvious. thanks :)
Happy to hear that it helped
As always, an excellent video with emphasis on practical applications.
Best wishes for 2025.

Yes, the buffer in the R7 is really not that great
cRaw is great. I hardly underexpose 4 stops. Two stops underexposed a few times due to my mistakes.
The only times I really need to push the shadows is for sunrise/sunset landscapes
Hi Fabian, did you see lynx in the wild?
Unfortunately, I have never seen or photographed a lynx. But all of my images are of course wild animals 😊

@@matthewcullen7106actually there is advantage of 4.0 cards they reduce heat accumulation since they don’t create as much heat as 2.0 cards.

maybe one day
Canon will allow user upgradeable buffer
like plug in your own M.2
If they would support CFExpress 4.0 then this would not be necessary
Your statement that the R1 "clearly" out performs the R5II at ISO 1600 (+4) will change your mind when you upscale the 24mp file to 45mp.
I did upscale it to 45MP (all photos in the test)
Why would you do that? What would be the point ?
To compare them at the same output size. If I make a print at 1.5 x 1m it’s also the same output size, everything else doesn’t make sense
@@noelchignell1048 normalizing both photos, upscaling and downscaling changes drastically the results and the perception of which actually is better.
