- Getting back to my roots, Banggood was kind enough to send the Syma X8HW Wifi FPV for review. The Syma X5C-1 was the first quadcopter I flew and it started me back into RC.

This 350 sized quadcopter has large brushed motors providing plenty of thrust and torque for the 9 inch propellers, a reasonable 1 megapixel WiFi FPV camera with onboard recording, a 2000mah battery and altitude hold.
From box to crash, come along as we put the RTF Syma X8HW through the paces.

These are really great hobby kits if you want to get into the hobby on a budget. And parts are all over the place. I revived a broken LH-X14/JJRC H25 with Syma X8HG flight controller, they share the same motors, props and motor mounts. just had to make an adapter plate out of 2mm Plexiglas and i got it flying again. Very good review

Thanks for posting this - Have just had one ordered for me for my birthday (I'm 64 years young) - Brought an X5C after seeing your review on it and very pleased, but of course no FPV a few years ago. Also brought the JJRC with FPV but found the camera very poor although the copter itself is quite reasonable. The X8 looks to be in a different league and I'm looking forward to getting it. Thanks Roger, I appreciate the compliment. Sounds like the same path I was on about 16months ago. I started on a x5c, then Mould King 33041a, then about 6 more before I started building brushed micros and FPV. Its all good fun.
Sure the neighbors love you. This is my first drone, something very similar I should say. Brings back memories. About 3 years ago now.
They don't mind, we talk fairly often in the warmer months when we are all out doing yard work. All good people, even had a quad in the neighbors pool he jumped right in and got it for me :)

This is the first drone I have ever had, and the instructions that came with this drone were very limited. Sometimes, instead of saying "ON" it would say "NO".
Thank you for putting this video, because I was about to return it. The instructions did not mention about the A & B .propellers.
I am still trying to figure out some of the terms you used, like LVC. I have not been able to get it to stand hovering still, the way I thought I would be able to, but I guess practice makes perfect.

LVC is low voltage cutoff, the lights blink and indicate its time to land, the battery is getting low.
I think this quad is a really good offering from Syma, it flies incredibly well and height holding/self level mix is just superb without taking the fun away. 19fps sd recordings and wifi link ain't great but stick some 5.8ghz gear on it and it's super precise and even ran some gaps with it yesterday. They seriously need to offer 5.8ghz version with external antennas, it would sell like hotcakes.
Agreed. I think wifi fpv is a descent starter fpv offering, but I think fpv in the name gives the wrong impression. It's fpv of the video/photo your shooting not fpv flying, as in racing. I did wish it had a bit more yaw, but I left that out as its a personal bias.
Nick Burns Yup, it is the first wifi FPV that I enjoyed even if the range is modest, it is still usable close and down low.
Thanks for a really good video , I only wish I could fly it as well as you haha . I recently bought the same model as my first drone , but man , I suck as a pilot. It seems to have a mind of its own ,and doesn't respond well to the remote .Ive needed to crash land it deliberately a few time just to stop it dissapear in onto the horizon . Just need to keep practicing I guess , but getting a bit disheartened by my failures .

I had several questions as I have only flow this a handful of times.
do you recommend beginners flying in headless mode? so hold down top left button till 3 beeps every time you turn it on. I keep it in low mode because I'm a beginner. was yours in high because it was very agile?
also I saw the mode switching by pressing b button right and then turning on. what is mode 1 and 2?
what are the finer trim adjustments? I see there are 4 of them 2 on each stick. should I just keep it centered beeped?
as far as wifi fpv range you said 30 meters so like 100 feet? I could have swore you said to the fence was 160 meters and that video cut out 90% out to the fence. what is the entire quad range? 160 meters?
how do you land it so smoothly? do you just keep tapping down stick or do you hold straight down left stick when close to ground to turn off blades?
I would go over more info about accessories like batteries and cameras, mods like extended range and brushless motors with prices, top tips for each level of experience.
I plan on buying 3 high capacity batteries, balanced tri charger, higher end 1080p wide angle wifi camera, vibration mount , controlled gimbal in the next couple months.
also you mention where you fly. I was told I can't fly in city public parks. any schools who don't allow quads on soccer fields or baseball fields? would rather fly on grass to cushion fall if crashed then concrete.
any help would be appreciated!

I don't recommend headless mode, but if its more fun for you to fly that way there isn't any harm in it. To be able to fly like I was you will likely need to work into it. No headless mode: keep the nose pointing away from you and take it away from you then back, not turning (no yaw, left stick), after your comfortable with that take it to the left or right then back. After that fly away then hover turn it (yaw) to the nose to you then back (at a safe distance), turn it again (yaw) and fly away. Then same with left or right. After your comfortable with those you should be able to fly forward and turn and keep it moving forward in flight. Mode 1 and Mode 2 are how the controller sticks are setup. Most fly in mode 2 with throttle and yaw on the left and pitch and roll on the right. The trim adjustments can be used to make the quad hover nicely, if there is wind it won't help much. With this quad we have to keep working the throttle down to land and when it is low to the ground hold the throttle down. I can't say where you might be allowed to fly, its different from area to area. In general avoid people and if asked to leave its best to comply and find somewhere else to fly. I was at a church field and no one was in the parking lot or around. I also fly in my backyard (big) and in the front street. I have talked to all my neighbors and offer to let them have a try. Unfortunately I cannot do a video on accessories or batteries...I don't have anything other than way came with the vehicle. FPV range is about 20-30 meters, it will vary, from phone to phone and interference. Just about all quads that use wifi fpv have this limitation. Control range without fpv is much greater. If I recall correctly I could control it beyond what I would be able to see it well and therefore would have a time doing maneuvers at that distance. If you keep it within eye sight you should not lose control. My primary goal of having a youtube channel was to give everyone information about products and how to do a number of different "things" related to quadcopters. I don't have a "way" of learning to fly, I think it needs to be fun first and naturally as we get more comfortable we tend to explore what the quadcopter(and we) can do...having fun all along the way. If you explore my channel you will see I do a lot of fpv flying, especially micros. Thus my line of sight flying (no goggles/fpv) isn't what it once was, but fpv is a different kind of fun, one I enjoy a lot.
Can you confirm something for me for the Syma X8hw, Will it save to the sd card if you activate the Recording or photo option on the controller, Because When I does that, The drone light flashes, Indicating its recording, But Nothing saves to my sd card, But if I Started the recording or photo on the app, It saves to SD Card AND Phone

Its a very subjective response, I would say appropriate at this price point. Its has a nice FOV and colors appear normal and the objects appear sharp and in focus.

A few questions though.
1.I'm a beginner or maybe a bit above, I had a Hubsan X4-code black edition, and I crashed it and broke it on my 8th flight. I'm planning on upgrading to this, so would you recommend it?
2.If not, any other suggestions, about 3 would help(preferably one's you've already reviewed)
3.The main reason why I kept on crashing the Hubsan was
A.The drone was too small you couldnt even see it after about 30-40 m
B.The drone rotated too much in the air and no matter how much I adjusted the trim it didnt help.
C.Because of that when I tried to bring the drone back to me I couldnt as it did not have headless mode and if i pressed back it moved left and hit a building/tree and ruined it.
4.Considering all this would this drone be the best for me?
5.I live in a residential area, a gated community with overhead cables so the drone needs to be kept upwards of 60-75 feet.Can I manage this?(I'm a beginner)
6.For the above mentioned reasons I think I should use the headless mode, would you recommend it, If so how exactly do I activate it(I didnt understand from the vid)Something about a long press?
7.Also I think its a must for me to use the altitude hold feature, How should I activate it?
8.You mentioned a high and low mode for the drone, I'd prefer to keep it at low, but what is the maximum height for the low mode? and how do I activate it?
9.Whats the maximum height the drone can reach?
10.Seeing other comments about the FPV, could I get a confirmative reply as to how far the FPV signal will last?
11.Estimating how I(a beginner) would fly the drone, how long will the fly time be with the camera? How long without?
12.If I like the whole drone thing, I am planning on buying a DJI Phantom 3 standard edition after this, I wouldnt want to crash a 600 dollar drone.
13.Considering all this would the Syma X8SW be the best beginner drone for me?(already tried smaller)

whoa. That's a lot of questions. I think this machine would be fine for someone in the beginning of RC flight, but with that I think unless your accomplished pilot find a big open space to practice. The key to learning to fly line of site keep moving the vehicle forward, this help keep orientation. I don't usually go for a best for individuals, we all are so different in what we want, our abilities, our environment and eye sight. I don't recommend headless mode, in my opinion it slows the process of learning to fly. High and low, I am referring to the rates, how much pitch and roll (forward and sideways) angle the machine allows. Maximum height? The FAA regulations in the US say 400ft is the ceiling. You won't get wifi fpv signal much beyond 30-50meters, well less than 400ft. Flight time depends so much on flight style I couldn't say, but add maybe 20% to the flight time you see in the video.
When landing, if you pull the throttle all the way down..dose it stop all props and fall out of the sky?

Wow, this was one of my first drones years ago. Even put a Tx 02 aio cam on it. Couldn’t fly with winds over 5 mph. 😂🤣 I think that’s when I became hooked on FPV

Great video, I have a question I have a x8hg if I buy wifi camera will a be able to use it on my fone in fpv .
normally yes. The wifi camera will need to have an app associated with it to download and install on your phone. I can't think of one that doesn't but its needed.
Can you attach a Gopro to this model? If I was to but a gopro gimal and or holder? Im thinking not.
I don't have a GoPro to try, but I think the GoPro and added weight of gimbal is going to really drag it down. Likely have to look for a brushless quad for that combo. I did a funny "can it lift" with the X8HW th-cam.com/video/7f6SAz_FVUo/w-d-xo.html
Is it possible to turn wifi completely to save battery when FPV not in use?
Sure. Unplugging the camera will disable wifi as its a function of the camera pod.

No worries, your English is very good. The video recordings are 20fps. The camera has no stabilization, the mount has some antivibration. If you mount an action camera it will fly just fine but you won't have control of the camera via the remote. Recordings will have to start on the ground.

Every time I press the left joystick up, it just goes to one side and turns over.

Hi Nick, i have assembled the drone according to the instruction, charge the battery fully but the the syma H8HW still doesn't fly. What is the most problem for this matter?
Have the motors been unlocked? I think its both sticks out and down (to the outer corners). Double check the instructions, this is from memory.

Why is there a A1 Blade, B1 Blade, and a B2 Blade, but no A2 blade, is B1 & B2 interchangeable on B turrets?
While I don't have this model for reference. In general (with the nose facing away from your) the props for the front (away) left and rear right are the same. The other props match each other too. I can't explain the labeling.
If I am going to buy this, do I need a app on my fhone or something to fly with FPV
yes for this version. I believe there is also a version that that includes a screen.

It depends if you want to see what the camera sees while in flight. The camera on the HW isn't nearly as good as the HG.

I don't understand what it does when you push the throttle. Does it flip upside down? If so the props are on incorrect. Check the labels of the props and arms.
means when i push throttle up, the motors should take power slowly slowly as I pushed upwards, but actually, When i push the throttle upside little, motors takes full power and goes upwards with full power.
Do you get full stick movement in cleanflight/betaflight 1000-2000? And you have min throttle set to?

How does the stock camera pair with a SmartPhone? And what kind of range?
The stock camera is no where close to a cell phone quality. The range is limited to about 30-50meters, depends on the environment. This is wifi band.
I have since got mine working and 30-50 meters is about right on mine too.

Is drone steady with the GoPro? Hijacks it?
I can't speak to exactly a go pro, but there is some "jello" when flying fast forward, but good when hovering.
The kemara is 2 Megapixel
Can video and pictures be done with the remote transmitter. I do not like WiFi.
I prefer using just the transmitter for record and taking pictures.

It works reasonably well, not like gps with sensors, it will move up and down with wind.

Yes. It is not permanently mounted.
Is this quad good for beginner fliers?
If you have a big open space (soccer or baseball field) to fly yes. If your space is somewhat limited no. Its big and powerful. One great feature for a starter is the altitude hold you can learn without having to manage throttle.
did camera recording the sound ?!
I believe so. Its really hard to hear anything other than the motor noise.
can you use the syma go app with the X8HW model?
I can't say, I don't believe that app was available when I reviewed this quad and no longer have it.

In my opinion, Syma quads are a bit confusing. Syma quads aren't really for filming or acro, it is in between. I think Syma should make a choice on this, because it has "hd" cam and also has preprogrammed flips and rolls.
yes, many times they have a host of features that don't really belong together, but make for better marketing.

What are you looking for in your drone? I can really depend. aerial photography, fpv, backyard flyer, big open space flyer. The primary feature of this quad is the altitude hold. For a vehicle without gps it does a nice job holding its altitude. But it requires space. It is a pretty sporty flyer.
I have plenty of space outside I live in the country. I was looking for something with lots of distance, a quality wifi camera, something that's does flips, wind resistant, etc...
The camera is pretty good at this price point. But the wifi has fairly short range, all of them do. But this one continues to record when it no longer is within wifi range. I can't say weather is has "lots" of range, its good, but I doubt its going out much beyond 180meters.

If we remove the stock camera we also lose fpv. We would have to add an action camera that has an accompanying video transmitter or addon module.

No. I can verify the control range of 160meters, could be more, in my case I ran out of space and couldn't see the quad very well. Range for fpv is approximately 45meters, this will vary on environment (5.8ghz interference). Its hard to see in the video when the fpv feed on the screen freezes and the wifi signal goes red, which indicates a loss of signal.

I don't believe there is a password, at least mine didn't have one. On your phone with the vehicle not powered on look at the wifi connections, then power on the vehicle and connect to the new wifi that appears. It may take few moments to appear.

why is every box you receive in the mail fucked?????
In total the boxes I receive are generally in good shape. But the thinner boxes without an outer shipping box do get banged around on its travels. A video example would be the box the Unicorn 220 RTF was sent in. Good solid box. If I were to draw a generality, I would say the less expensive quads are shipped in a thinner box without a proper shipping box.
