Kia Seltos vs Mitsubishi ASX vs Toyota C-HR vs Nissan Qashqai comparison review

  • The small SUV segment continues to expand, with new models and updated versions of existing compact high-riders seemingly streaming into the country constantly.
This is one of the busiest new car segments in Australia, and small SUVs like these aim to offer compact dimensions with family-friendly inclusions. We’ve assembled these four particular SUVs based on their size, and their price. They’re very close on both counts.
The newest kid on the block is the Kia Seltos, which arrived in Australia in 2019 with more than just a strong warranty. Our version is the Sport model fitted with the optional safety pack.
The Toyota C-HR has been updated recently, with a new media screen and a mild facelift adding some extra desire. There’s also a hybrid variant now - but it was too expensive for this test, so we’ve got the base model.
Another apparently new model is the Mitsubishi ASX, which has been facelifted and tweaked but is, essentially, the same car that launched here almost 10 years ago - that hasn’t stopped it from being popular - it remains the country’s reigning top-selling small SUV. We’ve got the LS model.
And also here is the Nissan Qashqai, which is due for an update of its own soon, but it still looks pretty modern despite having launched way back in 2014. Our Qashqai is the ST+ version.
All of these models are petrol-powered, automatic, and front-wheel drive - we’re not talking off-roaders here, as these are aimed at buyers who spend a lot of time around town.
With that in mind, we put these SUVs through their paces across a mix of scenarios to see which is the best small SUV out of this bunch.

The only problem with the ASX is the interior.
Is kind of the same since 2012, and that's why reviewers talk so badly about it. Mitubishi didn't change the interior because it really it does look great and have good build quality, but lacks a little on tech.
But is an AMAZING, durable and reliable car (I have one).

I was looking at a Mazda CX3 and Mitsubishi ASX ES, both the basic model. One is $26,990 and another is $27,240. For only a few hundreds more, Mitsubishi ASX was way more spacious and the trunk is twice the size of the Mazda. It's interior was not as nice as the Mazda but it has the size to make up for it. I'm going for practically over nicer interior.

I feel the same way too....ASX-value for money. If the Subaru Crosstrek was here I'd choose it over all these cars. But as for interior and boot space, the ASX looks a real family SUV. I hope it has off-road capabilities as I'm in Swaziland and South Africa....#african terrain.

I was looking at cars recently and sat in the CH-Rs front seat, at 1.87M (6' 2" I guess) I felt pretty cramped even in the driver seat, I can't imagine what the rear seat would be like. I love the design, just not practical for a big guy like myself.
Ended up buying the ASX because it looks good (in my opinion), I got a great discount and the feel of the driver's seat was the best compared to all the other cars I looked at that day - and I must have looked at about 20 different models, maybe more. It may not be the best out there, but compared to the 15 year old Corolla I'm driving now it's a massive difference.

@@jazzpote4316 over a year in I really like it, there are some issues that bug me, but overall it's a very good car and can be very economical if you make a little effort.
The only two things that bother me are that the automatic transmission is set for fuel efficiency and there is no way to change it so you have to floor the gas pedal if you want it to speed up quickly. Second, and frankly the far more annoying issue, is that the GPS always struggles to connect with the satellite and can take over 30 minutes to sort itself out if you haven't driven it in a few days (though I'm told this is a general issue with Mitsubishi and not an issue specific to the ASX)

And yes, by economical I meant MPG, a couple of weeks back I actually managed to outdo the official numbers by about 3 kilometers per liter (that should equate to an extra 5 or so MPG). It really depends on what kind of driving you are doing and how, I highly recommend using the cruise control whenever you can, it makes a massive difference in consumption.

I test drove a Seltos today and FWIW, I loved it. Should state it was the GT line turbo which probably makes a difference. I really like the styling of the C-HR but for the practicality (we needed more rear bench space and decent boot capacity) along with the performance and styling the Kia wins. My only question is the pricing and long term value. I had no problems with the level of finish but again it was the GT line spec so that makes a difference. I also sat in a lower spec Cerato and found the seats quite uncomfortable. All of this is quite subjective and personal. I understand why someone might pick the Toyota, it looks great but for my particular circumstances the Seltos ticked almost every box. The things I would want to add aren’t currently available. Always some comprimise.

Interesting review, especially since you have factored in that you have reviewed lots of cars. You state that for example the ASX has an old interior. It wouldn't be for someone buying a new car. This sort of thinking was going on when I bought the last V8 Ford Falcon. Journos were blasting it because it had the same dash as it did 4 years prior, yet you can't get the same car for the money anywhere in Australia now, unless you paid $180,000 for a car. People don't buy these SUV's because they handle in an unsafe way, in fact most people don't know what you are talking about in regard to handling. Buying a car made in Japan is a much smarter thing to do for long term enjoyment.

Thank you. The ASX looks appealing to me here in Swaziland. When buying a car in my country and South Africa you have to consider rural African terrain. I know the Japanese keep that in mind so when he didn't mention the ASX's off-road capabilities i felt i have to get a Subaru Crosstrek yet some say the ASX has AWD included.

I've test driven most of the cars on this video, and I believe the reviewers are being too picky, when the average driver won't care or notice the minor flaws mentioned. Car reviewers at times are unrealistic with their desires in cars. If you are looking for perfection, then buy a luxury car.

Eclipse Cross has a beautiful engine (and PHEV option) but lousy standard features. Seltos has good overall performance (but pricey for 1.6L turbo while the conventional 2.0L is ok for city driving but weak in climbing hills). Jolion is the best value for money (if you can tolerate the poor fuel efficiency). Corolla Cross is still unavailable and CX-30 is too expensive. CHR is too low to count as an SUV. It's annoying to watch SUV's getting lower and lower. More like Station Wagon's than SUV's. And it's weird that reviewers never discuss this. The biggest advantage of an SUV is that you can see ahead of the cars in front of you. Height is number 1 consideration.

And the logic that the being the best seller means the best is equally flawed, particularly in an automotive market as small as Australia. In the US, they give the Mitsubishi away and they still have problems moving them. Mitsubishi doesn't have a reputation for quality nor durability here. They are just cheap appliance cars for people who want more but don't have the money or credit to do better. In fact, in the US the Mitsubishi sells the least out of the three cars here that have been on market for more than a year. I bet the Seltos eclipses the Mitsubishi in its first year on the market too. Since this about Australia, what matters in the UK or the US means little.

The chr is s smart and sporty looking low slung 5 door hatchback like the veloster (which of course is a 4 door. Of the 3 SUVs you tested the winner . . . Yes kia. You also spent zero time showin the luggage fitting or not and insufficient time comparing the massive factory warranty variance. You also neglected cost of ownership items like service time intervals and costs or are they identical? You spent much time on driveaway pricing which is great but 5 year servicing costs and off road time is equally important to driveaway pricing in most buyers minds.. yes you are 6cm taller than the average aussie male so rear seat room for the most likely occupants is irrelevant to your sit behind yourself concept. Yes I know that is an unwritten benchmark but maybre find an av e rage height driver to read the story. Your subjective comments constituted too much info and real world 0 to 60kmh filmed inside tests would have been more convincing for a potential buyer.
