When I drove the 458 and 488 back-to-back, I found it rather difficult to get used to. Once you switch to the turbocharged unit, I kept clattering into the rev limiter because I was used to how high the 458 revs. But, I felt that if you were to pick one to use everyday, the 488 was definitely the car. The power is just so usable in normal situations and the styling is just more subdued compared to the 458. I actually prefer normally aspirated myself even though Turbocharged gives you lugs of power it's less controllable and therefore you lean on complex traction algorithms to sort everything out for you which they do brilliantly ofcourse but then if your an experienced driver of on the limit NA cars you miss the feelings you get from doing it yourself. You kind of feel a bit like a cheat driving fast in say a McLaren because the car is doing majority of it for you.
I find it very refreshing that the car has lots of leather, no carbon-fibre and no obvious Alcantara. As an overall package, it'd be the 911 for me, but I do like these smaller Ferraris very much.
Turbos can sound good. Just look at F1 or a nice 911 with a decent exhaust. The problem is with the EU and its absolutely shocking requirements for noise and pollution. You end up with this. In the 10-15-20 years since those engines came along the EU has tightended up regulations hugely. This is also one of the reasons they look so boring as well. having driven many miles in a 720 I'd agree that the 488 has a more "fun" steering feel. I would imagine the 600LT though is the pick of the bunch. The engine torque and general response in the Ferrari is better than any 720S which feels like it has a big hole low down when you're in a tall gear. Also the 488 sounds the best. the 488 is secretly quite a hooligan car, it eggs you on to do crazy getaways at T-junctions and roundabouts. I'd say the 488 and a Noble M400 are probably the kind of cars bad boys like to drive whereas something like a 355 or Diablo or 550 is what a more refined kind of customer would collect. The main problem with cars like these is that with a DCT there's little that you can play with at low speeds so the car will always be at licence losing speeds as Harry Metcalfe found out. 355s sound glorious (great engine calibration and gearbox) but they go absolutely nowhere. A 993 C4 will eat it for breakfast and if you want fun you should stick to a Noble M12 every time. but if you want a flappy paddle car, you can't go wrong with a 488 since you'll get bored of an Audi R8 and I dare say the Huracan drives like Ridge Racer (if you're old enough to remember those arcade multi-player games).

I owned an amazing 458 for two years which i loved. Despite this i decided i wanted to try a 488GTB abd bought one last July. Having owned both i much prefer the 488 as i never quite got used to the over active steering and very short and sharp throttle. My 458 was a late 2011 but i've heard that later 458s had a smoother throttle. My 488 looks much better IMO when i look at the back end in my garage. The 458 now looks old compared to the 488 especially from the front and back. I test drove a Roma which i wasn't particularly keen on. Main reason is that i felt the rear wheels of the Roma struggled to keep in synch with the front when accelerating hard. I also drove the F8 which is a glorious machine with the one caveat in that it doesn't sound as good as my 488. I'm thinking of getting a nicely optioned 812SF next at over £100k less then new list price. Trouble is i'm not 100% convinced i'd enjoy it more than my 488..
Man I love your reviews its television leveled content.. I like the accelerations and pass by’s, since of humor , charisma and detail of review.. don’t stop this formula for real for real
The 488 has the side air inlets you're missing on the 458. But the 458 has the NA engine sound missing in the 488. In the end, the 488 seems to be a better car. One would hope to get the improvements in the Pista or F8 Tributo. Seeing you fit in the car give the idea that the Italians can make a car that fits a proper-sized man.
Ferrari isn't my thing, but here's a comment to let everyone know I've watched with ads playing in full and sound on these little headphones which are not in my ears...great channel Jay, see you on the next one as my notifications are on.
It really does come down to personality...like you said James, if you need people to notice you in your car and that's what gets your through life, THESE are your type of car, along with Laimbo and McLarens for that matter. The 9 1 1 is like the evolution of man, it has changed but you can ALWAYS see where it started. A TRUE daily driver, just swap out the summer rubber for some winter shoes and drive it year round with no worries.
So Jay, having driven all the Ferraris this week is the F355 still your favourite? As someone who hasn’t driven any of them the 355 sounds the best but the 360 in blue was the prettiest and most surprising I felt based on your videos....
Watching this review, it really made me wonder: Why on earth did we need the F8 Tributo? The 488 Pista (assuming it's the ultimate version of the 488 like every other special version) would have been a lovely send off to the V8s....
Hi, thanks for the content. As this was the first you drove will there be sth like vlog summary of Ferrari's V8, especially which one you would take 458 or 488.
I would absolutely LOVE to have a 488, but a manual GT3 delivers a lot of the thrills, is arguably one of the best drivers cars and has thus far shown pretty solid residuals. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not better, nor is it ‘as good’, but in terms of bang for buck...
This is my dream car, well not in that horrible colour but for me there is no other car. Such a balance of power and beauty and fun, this would be an every day driver for me. Need that lotto win to hurry up.
In the bit of the UK I live in we very rarely get more than one or two days of snow a year - the rest of the time the Ferrari would do just fine. And you're likely to have something else on the drive when you have a car like this
I drove one ,spider version. Except the usual convertible body shutter, that car was a dream, the steering response and the engine fast answer to the throttle, was really making it a real accurate and fun car. . And before I drove it ,I hade drove the GTB Lusso. But for the 488 I fall In love !!!
Still yet to drive one old friend, the regular 992 S left me cold as you know - however reports seem to implicate the current turbo is a rather engaging drive. I'm looking forward to also trying Porsche UK's poverty spec 911 Carrera in the near future
Since we seem to be going fairly solidly and to my utter delight through the Ferrari back catalogue one at a time I will wait for my favorite - the F40!!!! I wish I still had my Dino 246gt to lend you
Anyone else getting frustrated at car journalists constantly bitching about cars being turbocharged and not sounding and performing as well as NA engines but then contradicting themselves when they review them? "This engine sounds great, can't hear the turbos at all" "The response from this engine is instant, no turbo lag"...Anyways, great video as always. You are really spoiling us this Christmas with so much great content.
+ exhaust correction, I'd be a bit more inclined to ponder a 488 or newer mid-engine v8 Ferrari...but for both budget and tone requirements I'll stick with my 360>430>458 upgrade track.
Great work. So now that you’ve reviewed them in quick succession, I’d love a summary video. Maybe ranking the top 3 if you want a weekend warrior, compared to top 3 if you want a fast GT for regular cross country jaunts, versus top 3 if you want an all rounder. Maybe a ‘best bang for your buck’ recommendation. I’ve never been in a V12, so would also be interested to hear your views on how they compare to your 550 and a modern Ferrari V12.
I’ve got to admit I have never really cared about Ferrari’s until I have seen you review 6 in a row and all of a sudden I’m interested to see more... Would be interesting to see a review on a Testarossa in the future!
@@greathey1234cool opinion, unfortunately the general consensus is flat plane crank v8 sound way better than a traditional cross plane. You can make any v8 truck sound like a Maserati with enough exhaust work
As a life long Ferrari fan I’m loving this series and genuinely love your channel!! I really don’t know how I feel about the 488, it’s certainly not ugly, BUT... Turbo charging a Ferrari is a big no, no for me!
Loved this series James, I actually really like these modern Ferrari's. Not that I'll ever be in the position to, but could happily see myself in one of these (assuming someone who's 6' 5" could actually fit!)
Why choose the older car when the new one has better upgrades. I just got the 488, its amazing . Had check on few 458, its too old for my liking. My 488 has novitech pipe. Sound super loud , no difference than the 458 but with more power better gearbox and newer interior
Great Series James and a great channel too. I have been a subscriber for a while, but after this series, I can genuinely say your channel is top 3 in my faves! Happy New year to you Buddy!
488 looks better than 458. 458 is missing side intakes and more aggressive (Speciale like) front which the 488 rectifies. 488 Pista is miles better looking than the Speciale.
Good review, 1st time I’ve seen a Ferrari that’s not a re-badged FIAT looking as though it genuinely belongs on a daily driver driveway. The excellent factory backed warranty and incentives must have cracked Porsche on the chin too. None of these toys are bargains but the changing winds could morph an enthusiasts dream into a once unattainable reality🙏🏽
Modern Ferraris do absolutely nothing for me, and the Modern PDK Porsches are the same. That info about the Ferrari warranty and Service was surprising though, so maybe either could pull daily role nowadays. What I look for in a Supercar is something that Evokes Emotion, and the last Porsche and Ferrari that did that for me were the F355 & 997 GT3. Subtle colors are good on Supercars because I think they do gather less attention. The feeling of wondering how hard you can drive the car til something breaks ,or wonder when something is going to break was all the appeal of an Older Supercar esp. if it was Italian. The Mclarens are another car that have never done anything for me, they just seem so boring, and Im sure they are stupid fast just don't care. Most modern super & hypercars are all about the #s ,but I don't think that is the point. They have to make you feel something , and be interesting most new ones are Not for me.
Wow, the colour choice of that particular car is interesting... I mean it just blends into the pavement (1:40) completely! Moreover from the exterior shots i feel like that cold grey/silver colour highlights the wrong parts of the car somehow? All the panel seams etc. just jump into focus?
Many say that it sounds bad. It probably sounds worse than the 458, but the tone reminds me of an old school 4 cylinder like that of an Alfa GT racecar
The Porsche 911 Turbo S and the NSX are my pics. The Ferrari can be exciting but it goes over the top on things. The others are a bit more subdued. I think though this one is very classy and its a Ferrari. Almost a must own type of thing for its Classic lines and the Modern power.
Man i love how this car looks. I dont know why but i think it looks so aggressive while still being quite elegant. I especially love this colour! And its not red! Halleluja
When the 488 came out I was a massive fan but to be honest, as times gone on, I've gone off it a little and am starting to really appreciate the 458. I haven't even looked at an F8
I completely agree with your opinion even though I just ordered a 992 turbo s and that's because I have a kid I will need to sometimes fit in my car and more importantly I can't be too flashy in my neighborhood right away. I need to break in a bit slow. But my ultimate goals for cars are Ferrari
Although I do agree with your points as far as the 488 versus the turbo s is concerned. Yes I also would choose a 488 over a Turbo S as well, but the Turbo S will hold its value better and would slap the 488 in a quarter mile and on a track. I personally would take a 992 911 GTS, I think that car is the sweet spot. I got to drive one down here at Atlanta porsche center.
As someone about turn 30, I would take the Porsche 100/100 times. A beautiful, fun, high performance car that won't make you look like a 16 year old trying to impress people. I love the Ferrari, and I would absolutely own one if given the chance, but I would just end up feeling like a dolt driving it around knowing I could have had the Porsche. Also, the Turbo S sort of blows this out of the water in terms of performance.
I've always preferred V12 Ferraris, believing that a proper Ferrari has its engine in the front, but I've really enjoyed this series on the V8s. If I had the money, I would go for for the 488, accepting that the 458 is the prettier car and the engine is purer. Ferraris are so much better built than they used to be, I think that's largely down to the increased competition, and with the warranty that they now offer it's also a near enough trouble-free purchase.
Great looking car but not quite as nice as the 458 interesting to see the values cross over but that’s the appeal of a normally aspirated V8’s ..... keep up the great videos 👍🏻... really enjoyed the Porsche and Ferrari series
The 911 Turbo S has more torque and max torque comes 500 rpm earlier. And it can put the power down due to the AWD. And it's better built. And it's a good daily driver.
Ferrari 488 is awesome yet Im enjoying my 2020 c8 corvette z51 fe4 that I bought new in america for a little over 70 grand out the door...that I daily drive and my maintenance is a $100 oil change every year....and thats it. I am enjoying all your videos. Thank you
Tough choice. I’ve seen a lot of stuff about the 992 Turbo S and it’s been pretty positive to say the least. I prefer the style of the 458 to the 488 as well, guess we’re all spoilt for choice and that’s without the McLaren options !
Loving the series, but beware extolling the virtues of Ferrari’s servicing package too hard. There’s a lot of small print. My last supposedly free service cost me £1500 and it seems the dealers don’t all apply the rules in the same way. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still better than forking out for it all, but even someone flush enough to have a Ferrari winces at something they thought was going to be free costing £1500.
While never having anything close to a Ferrari,I can't help but think, the 7 year warranty is a clever loss leader to help you read and accept the ' recemended' items on the road test?
The interior and exterior colour combo on this example works so well. Also, as general point, I really like the interior design of Ferraris. Not necessarily always the most intuitive controls/infotainment, but Ferrari dashes look so good, especially compared with dull as dishwater dash design of McLarens.
Owning a ferrari is not just about the badge and the speed but the hypnotic v8 symphony which any new ferrari has been robbed of due to regs and turbocharging.
Test drove one two months ago as I seriously considered buying it having loved the 458 7 years ago when I had it for a long weekends blast around south England, but scuttle shake over 150 mph disappointed - there are better chassis around; the game has moved on!

I'm thinking of getting a nicely optioned 812SF next at over £100k less then new list price. Trouble is i'm not 100% convinced i'd enjoy it more than my 488..
488 is simply awesome. for me anyway it is everything I want. great vid JM
After watching all the series so far I think I'd definitely have a 488! In this spec too just looks mega and the turbo V8 is right up my alley
Another good review James. No question I would take this over the 911 Turbo S. It ticks more boxes for me.
I would take the carbon drivers zone ( it's what I can see) and leave the rest to the ' willy wavers' 😃
I agree but Ferrari has turned into every other manufacturer and only looks at money 💰
Because its successor will be a hybrid of some sort, hence the name.
@@markwickens7271 Then we not just name the 488 Pista the 488 Tributo?
No mention of all weather capability. Obviously a kept man and happily willing to let it bias his take.
In the bit of the UK I live in we very rarely get more than one or two days of snow a year - the rest of the time the Ferrari would do just fine.
And you're likely to have something else on the drive when you have a car like this
@@JayEmmOnCars Sir i thank you for your reply and will continue to watch , ty for your time and consideration. Cheers
I drove one ,spider version. Except the usual convertible body shutter, that car was a dream, the steering response and the engine fast answer to the throttle, was really making it a real accurate and fun car. . And before I drove it ,I hade drove the GTB Lusso. But for the 488 I fall In love !!!
Thoughts on Chris Harris making the 992 Turbo S his car of the year?
Still yet to drive one old friend, the regular 992 S left me cold as you know - however reports seem to implicate the current turbo is a rather engaging drive.
I'm looking forward to also trying Porsche UK's poverty spec 911 Carrera in the near future
@@JayEmmOnCars poverty spec... this one made me chuckle more than it should have
Says more about CH than the 992 TS imo. He used to be a benchmark. Not anymore. Too much telly fame bullshitting etc
@@JayEmmOnCars and a manuel 991 carrera T please..
Best series of the year..... James I enjoy your blend of perspective and antidotes.
Since we seem to be going fairly solidly and to my utter delight through the Ferrari back catalogue one at a time I will wait for my favorite - the F40!!!! I wish I still had my Dino 246gt to lend you
This is a great set of videos, thank you.
Ferrari are one of the very few to get turbo engines right
Really enjoy he’s take on cars.... appreciate all the content in the tough time we all living in.... Keep it up 👍
Doug DeMuro wears two t shirts, whilst the infinitely superior JayEmm wears two dress shirts
Hahaha
It’s a dominance thing
@@gaara4667 hahahaha
I think JayEmm is UK so two shirt would take cold away from him, but Doug wearing two on California is hilarious.
Thanks mate, really enjoyed watching these. Still the dream to own a Ferrari, I think the 430 is me.
+ exhaust correction, I'd be a bit more inclined to ponder a 488 or newer mid-engine v8 Ferrari...but for both budget and tone requirements I'll stick with my 360>430>458 upgrade track.
Great series. Nicely done.
I'd go for the 488. The front is a little out of proportion. Great rear end though. Beautiful side inlets. Lovely profile. Might have to wait awhile.
Would be interesting to see a review on a Testarossa in the future!
i took notice when i saw the first video of a 458. so sexy....
458 all day long. Nothing beats NA sound
Actually all Ferrari v8s sound terrible as they are flat planes. The same cross plane engine in the Maserati sounds epic
@@greathey1234cool opinion, unfortunately the general consensus is flat plane crank v8 sound way better than a traditional cross plane. You can make any v8 truck sound like a Maserati with enough exhaust work
Too old
@@SaburAliKhan03 and have it sound like a McLaren and not have the glorious na powerband. I’d pay more for a 458 any day
458’s sound like crap though
Nice video series, Jay. Keep up the good work.
Thankyou! May take a while to top this one
Gorgeous car and stunning colour!😍
I’ve never ever really complimented any TH-cam before but Jay… good job
I'm looking at a 2016 for sale at redline for only 139k!!
Loving the daily Ferrari content James.....I'd take the 458 I think 🤔
Why choose the older car when the new one has better upgrades. I just got the 488, its amazing . Had check on few 458, its too old for my liking.
My 488 has novitech pipe. Sound super loud , no difference than the 458 but with more power better gearbox and newer interior
Not my cup of tea this 488 GTB , I'll be happy with a AMG GT.
Yeah... Ferrari is cool but it’s a Ferrari. AMG is understated and an incredible bang for your buck.
Nah
AMG GT is more an older man's car.
AMG GTR would be a better argument... and still a lot less than a 488
@@joe718gt4 Yeah the AMG GTR is incredible on track/road, what a lovely muscle car.
What a coincidence!! I have one the same color sitting on my fireplace mantle!!
The last really pretty model coming from Modena before the 458 / 488 or F12, was the 365 Daytona, and those are just slightly over my budget.
JAYEMM !!!!!! --YOU have a BIG BOLD FRONT END --- I dont think many are excited about that either -----------------
love the mid engine ferrari mini series. great work and honest feedback thanks!
That's a really good point.
Many say that it sounds bad. It probably sounds worse than the 458, but the tone reminds me of an old school 4 cylinder like that of an Alfa GT racecar
You've lifted the game. Well done sir
The Porsche 911 Turbo S and the NSX are my pics. The Ferrari can be exciting but it goes over the top on things. The others are a bit more subdued. I think though this one is very classy and its a Ferrari. Almost a must own type of thing for its Classic lines and the Modern power.
definitely 1000%. It's like choosing Miss Universe (Ferrari) to Miss ugly (Porsche 911).
Jay... which out of the many cars that you have driven did you find was the most comfortable?
Volvo XC70 has to be up there
@@JayEmmOnCars Thanks... I'll have a look.
Man i love how this car looks. I dont know why but i think it looks so aggressive while still being quite elegant. I especially love this colour! And its not red! Halleluja
Smart move not to use the spur road (A338 to Bournemouth) for ‘fast runs’. You did right to stick to roads east of South East of Ringwood
Brilliant real world review, keep them coming!
Love the colour on that Ferrari 488 it gives it a different look
If I could afford the Ferrari , I'd buy a Porsche too... Might as well enjoy both!
Jay, the entertainment system is behind you and, theres only one controller 😊
Simplest and best system
Fantastic Ferrari, really good presentation. Hope you get to drive the 458.
Really impressed by these reviews. Feels like old school Top Gear before it became a parody of itself.
The 911 Turbo S has more torque and max torque comes 500 rpm earlier. And it can put the power down due to the AWD. And it's better built. And it's a good daily driver.
I'm hoping for a V12 series in 2021.
After all that, I still want the 430 but your 488 love in came close.
Happy NY James.
Happy New Year
And if you go back through my videos you will find a week where I did the 550, 599 and the F12
Ferrari 488 is awesome yet Im enjoying my 2020 c8 corvette z51 fe4 that I bought new in america for a little over 70 grand out the door...that I daily drive and my maintenance is a $100 oil change every year....and thats it. I am enjoying all your videos. Thank you
Another great video Jay, no nonsense. Love your work
Tough choice. I’ve seen a lot of stuff about the 992 Turbo S and it’s been pretty positive to say the least. I prefer the style of the 458 to the 488 as well, guess we’re all spoilt for choice and that’s without the McLaren options !
Thank you for spending the time to add footnotes, a la the Pininfarina comment :)
This 3.9 V8 has won Engine of the year four years in a row (2016-2019). It might be the best engine ever.
Yes, I had both and I sold the Porsche Turbo which is a very good car, but the 488 is a superior car in almost every aspect.
Always enjoy your reviews . I have tried Some of the new Ferrari's I am sticking to what I've got.
McLaren's design language is quite elegant but they need better quality materials as they can be quite sparse otherwise
