As someone who took delivery of a 458 less than 2 weeks ago as of typing this, of course the title of your video caught my eye. I completely agree with your comparison to the 430 Scuderia. I was originally shopping for a 430 Scuderia, but with the recent price trend of them as well as the potential cost for maintenance is why I went with the 458 and I have to say I couldn't be happier with it so far. As for whether or not the 458 itself is overrated? I have to disagree, I think it has been put on a very high pedestal and from that perspective could be considered overrated, but it has been rightfully put on that pedestal due to how great it truly is, and the 458 will only continue to age gracefully.
@@brandonchism6960 thank you! That is a topic I will likely cover on my channel. From a styling perspective the Z06 does nothing for me. I need to get my hands on one and see how it drives.
How do you feel about the sound of the 4.5 from inside the car? Ive only ever heard these from outside so I cant determine if I agree or not with Jay’s opinion on the sound
Couldn't agree more. The lack of scoops gives the 458 a timeless elegance that will still be sought after decades from now. To my eye, the 488 looks like someone butchered a 458 with an after market bodykit from Alibaba.
@@jafooli Can't agree more. The 458 was pure and perfect by itself - but the 488 introduced unnecessary design elements (yes, I know they were completely necessary from the engineering point of view) in order to make it look "new".
Strong disagree with you here.... It has everything! - Power you can use 80% of on the road - Sound, incredible. Especially with a novitec - Looks! beautiful. - RELIABILITY! Never had a single issue in 20,000 miles and 7 years of ownership. - Price... I mean, what else can you get this good for £130k? Very little options compare -
I agree with you here - but am always interested to hear another view point. I have a 458 together with a 348 and 550. The 348 is always the most engaging to drive - wonderful if you can take the top off too - but your exhausted after an hour or so. The 550 just makes you feel special, takes everything in its stride, cruising but also rewarding if you want to press on. But for me, the 458 is not for that short blast, but really comes in to its own on a longer (B road) journey and you can really get in to a rhythm. Maybe you need to live with it longer to appreciate what it can do?
I cringed when reading the title. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. So, I won't fight anyone about opinions. Love your channel and would have watched the video regardless of the title, but hopefully, it gained you some new viewers and subs. I wish you much continued success in your TH-cam channel growth. For the record, the 458 currently wears the crown for me. ❤️
This was peak Ferrari in my honest opinion. Pinninfarina left after or shortly after this car, and Ferraris styling went into the gutter until very recently with the 296. Shame this or the speciale never came with a stick.
Sorry to say that but you are most likely the only one in the world who complained about the sound of 458, I've had the 430/488/F8 and sold all of them but kept the 458, I respect your opinion and I'm not going to argue.
Biased obviously but I absolutely adore my 458. It’s the perfect sweet spot between analogue and modern, looks brilliant, useable in lots of different situations, faster than you’ll ever need, and pretty reliable too. As others have said, there’s nothing in the price bracket that appeals even half as much. Personally I love the sound and put it in my top 5 engine noises of all time. Amazed that you’re not a fan TBH Jay! I guess it’s one of those to each his own things, but my 458 is the only car I have that I can confidently say I’ll never sell (unless someone does me a deal on a Speciale that is!).
I changed my 488 to a 458 early last year & have enjoyed every minute. I’m fortunate to own a scud also which is a different ownership experience & is tricky to compare in reality. I had an early 650, never again. Awesome car but to many issues meant I sold it & bought the scud which is the best thing I ever did. The 60k you save buying a 650 keep for rainy day maintenance!
I'd say the F40 was the most overrated Ferrari. Awful build quality and an often difficult road car. An icon? Absolutely. An investment? Certainly. An automotive Van Gogh, perhaps?
The F50 exists, a car with a compromised engine nailed to your back, and due to a numbers, an even bigger investment vehicle and the F40 is the one in your firing line as overrated.
I have a 2011 458 and absolutely love it. Around mid 2012 Ferrari adjusted the exhaust notes and for the most part got rid of the crackles. At the same time I owned a 2017 488 GTB and absolutely loved it. Did not sound as good as my 458 but was as good looking and much more smoother to drive. Oh ya and much faster but I believe the 458 is a better car for the road. 488 is just to fast for the road. I recently traded the 488 GTB for a Pista. The Pista is stupid fast but I love it. I will only sale my Italia for a Speciale...!
Love the channel and thanks for the video. Here is my advice on doing a review P3: 1. Get a spider 2. Sample one with a Kline exhaust 3. Take it to a proper twisty mountain road. 4. drive in race only 5. Drive in manual only 6. Report back This cars greatest strengths (its breadth and versatility) can also be its weaknesses. Drive at 7/10s and up and you’ll see what this is all about.
Same for any Ferrari. But the 458 is the first Ferrari to just lack that visceral edge. It is, sadly, a little too refined, a little too artificial. A lot of it (imo) stems from its gearbox. There's a good reason why Lambo kept the single clutch in the Aventador.
Totally disagree that 458 is overrated. I think no one is qualified to make such remarks about 458 ( or any other car for that matter) without actually owning it, living with it and driving it over a period of time. And, having the privilege/opportunity of owning multiple super cars from various manufacturers at the same time, to be able to compare them with the 458 Italia. There is no other Ferrari out there which ticks the boxes which the 458 does: 1- Last Pininfarina Designed V8 Ferrari. Regarded by most Ferraristas as one of the best looking modern Ferrari to date. 2- Last Naturally Aspirated V8 by Ferrari, revving up to 9000 rmp. 3- Cult Following globally 4- V8 Sound 5- Build quality far better than any previous Ferrari. Period. 6- More drivable than ANY previous Ferrari . Period. 7- Excellent Factory warranty and 7 year free service plan. Better than anything Ferrari had offered for previous models 8- F1 Technology etc etc etc. If Ferrari 458 Italia is not a better car in every single aspect, than any of its predecessor than is it the 488 GTB? or F8 Tributo? I know what most of my car friends think about the turbo charged Ferraris based upon the 458 Platform...
Couldn't disagree more about the lack of side scoops: That's what MAKES this shape...emphasising the cab forward stance that Centro Stilo's turbo-required scoops entirely disrupt. The Maserati MC20 shows how that can be done so much better.
I loved my 458 Italia it did most things well, was very civilised and could be driven daily if required as it was so easy to pilot in auto mode anyone could drive it. However flick the manettino and it changed character instantly! I should have kept it but I part exchanged it for the car I always wanted the 360 CS. Granted it’s slower, more clunky and the gearbox is nowhere near the 458 but the noise and the feeling of being more connected to the car wins you over. So I don’t think the 458 is over rated it’s great at what it does but there are other cars that stir the soul more.
..and when you consider that you can mod a 360 Modena to be quite close to a CS (but less stiff - a good thing), then I'd question why people need to spend £135k when they could spend £50k + mods.. 👀
@@MrGB1999 it’s quite close but not quite the real thing. I have a spider modified to Stradale spec( as close as possible) to go with my Stradale but on a normal road with a good driver the spider isn’t really any slower in real world terms. It’s like saying is the Speciale much faster or better than the Italia. It is but for the money difference you will probably have just as much fun in the cheaper car. It’s still a Ferrari at the end of the day.
Having had a few Ferraris I have to respectfully disagree. Some of the points you make (lack of reward for hitting 9k rpm, exhaust bark - although this is easily fixed with a £250 aftermarket controller) I agree with, but perhaps I’m a bit older and can remember how much of a spaceship this was when it landed in 2009. The same cannot be said about the 355, 360, or 430. When the 355 was released, Porsche had the 993 Turbo, a car that would monster it in every dimension bar noise, similarly the 360 which the 996 Turbo would demolish without a second thought. 430 - 997. However with the 458 it took Porsche a full 4 years to even come close, and for sheer driving pleasure the McLaren was miles behind. The 650 again came a full 4 years later. To criticise the 458 for those issues compared to cars that took years of development just to be comparable is a bit unfair. Also two things make it near perfect - make it a Spider (solves the in cabin noise issue) and buy a IPE exhaust- makes even the 355 sound a bit tame!
Spaceship vs purity and timelessness. Isn't Lamborghini the place of spaceships? 🤔 The 458 is the first Ferrari that put refinement before raw, visceral pleasure. It made the car more usable, granted. But seriously, who is commuting or doing errands in these cars. Give me the old school sensations for those few perfect moments over "everyday" use.
@@MrGB1999 have you driven one? I have a few cars and I use my 458 spider more than any of them, including currently in the snow here in Switzerland. Emotion was a term previously used to excuse poor build quality. The 458 is in a different league to the 430 in terms of pure driving enjoyment.
He's also biased since he's justifying his decision to buy an F12 and 430 scud. So hard to admit the 458 is probably a more legendary car than both of them.
Fight you, I will. I disagree highly, this is a legendary modern Ferrari, the only dispute for me is a manual F430 or this. How could you not be moved by the noise, and the turn of speed this has? It isn't perfect, but despite your objections, this car is still an object of desire; certainly over any 12C or 650S. If you haven't already, drive a 458 Speciale, and that will give you the fizz and the drama you're looking for.
@Richard Harrold Can't argue about sound. Ferraris sound way better. You would get just as far telling me Slash has horrible tone. I sympathize with your impairment.
Each to their own to be honest, I've owned many modern sports and supercars, 458 was something very special to me, it was so special I worked my butt to get the Speciale which is now my all time favourite. For now.
You like the f355 because of the looks and sound. I like the 458 because of the looks and the v8. About the sound there were more restrictive noise db limitations when the 458 was produced. Also it's by far more likely most f355 are on aftermarket exhausts.
Owned two 458’s; a 2011 car and 2013 car, both Italia’s. Preferred the earlier car, which was more aggressive in sound- the 2012 upgrades softened this and the gearbox changes in race mode. The car was wonderful, but just never missed it once gone. Actually to me the most disappointing element was the flat plane engine sound. It’s was just a noise that got louder the higher you revved the engine. No depth or changes to it and certainly not a patch on earlier V8 Ferraris (the engine itself was wonderful in operation though). The inability to drive the car on a constant throttle at motorway speeds drove me nuts I.e. it was always either on or off the throttle. This was only ever fixed with the 488 onwards… Personally wouldn’t have another one and the game has moved on somewhat since. Always think the comments and support of this car was a bit ‘Emperors New Clothes’ - being blasphemy to criticise the greatest ever sounding V8. Na, not for me; if you really what the greatest engine, then buy yourself a pre GPF 812SF…. Mines not going anywhere soon (god willing)…. Edited to add, I’d definitely have another 488 over a 458; that’s was a car I still miss and wish I hadn’t sold.
i always wondered why the more modern ferrari v8s didnt sound quite right. ive always loved the 355 and 360 for their sounds but the later cars dont quite hit in the same way. it reminds me of when you were talking about a ferrari v12 (mightve been a 599) ages ago and how the exhaust needed to be set up as a 6 into 1 to get that epic v12 sound which you expect.
@@supraman2755 yeah, however the 348 has 4 valves but sounds very similar to the 355. the thing is same v8 was used from 308 towards 360 with few changes but at its core its same engine. The 430 switched to a completely new v8 from the previous belt driven family and was modified a bit for the 458 which also uses same core engine. Then another completely new v8 was also designed for 488, the second gen v8 lived a very short life about 11-12 years meanwhile the first gen lived for around 23 years
The only part of the review I agree with the rear view from the 458, it is not very good. If you buy one, get the back up camera. Otherwise, Jay is way off on everything else.
"Lacking what I'm looking for"... you're an automotive journalist, you're jaded, you'll always have something to complain about whether you care to admit it or not. Complaining about a car that most everyone loves creates controversy and therefore increases views and subscriptions. Well done. The 458 is a sexy and exhilarating package on 4 wheels with its share of quirks, some of which can be taken care of with aftermarket mods. The 650S is just another quiet, boring, and unreliable McLaren that's great at going very fast for a highly depreciated price (before factoring in the required extended warranty). It will never be the last naturally aspirated mid-engined V8 supercar that revs to 9000 RPM. Maybe in a couple of years when you do yet another 458 review, you'll come to understand why they're still so loved.
A true youtuber always looking and going to greater heights for his audience once he decimated Abarth fans he set his sights on bigger and better goals. Nice video. Keep up the good work.
I gotta disagree with this one. My best friend has one and this is definitely one of the most emotional cars I have ever sat in. He put a full carbon manifold + exhaust and this car is just next level.
“It doesn’t really excite” sums it up well. A few years ago I was certain that this was going to be my first Ferrari until I drove a couple. I felt less of an emotional connection to it than my other sports cars in the garage and left the experience feeling flat and wanting something else. Some friends pointed to the Scud and within the first mile I knew it was the car for me. If the 458 was my only sports car, it would be the more capable and better all rounder. But for those fortunate to have other options, it just isn’t a special enough experience.
Its my favorite post 2000 mid engined V8 Ferrari.Styling is less fussy and overall drive experience is just incredible.Only major criticism is placement of the battery behind the footwell on the passenger side.
I wish I could say I own a 355, but sadly I can only afford it's JDM tribute, the Mk2 Toyota MR2 turbo. Some say it's the best driver's car (for the money).
After having a coupe and now a spider, I have to say if anything it's underrated and people don't realise how bloody amazing this car is. Perfect mixture of modernity with some old school naturally aspirated heaven thrown into the mix.
If Ferrari offered the 458 with a manual transmission when in production, it would be regarded as one of their very best offerings ever, at any price point. The likely few that would've been outfitted with such a transmission would already be demanding an eye-watering premium vs. the original price as-new. Either way... I love this car just the way it is.
Depends what you want from your Ferrari, but look at it. Just LOOK AT IT!!! 😍😍😍 Admit it, you can see Tom Selleck drifting away from a standstill in one of these.
Does anyone else feel put off by JayEmm ‘s video titles? Always on the negative side rather than positive - always! About cars that others love/rave about. I’m assuming just click bait to get views with controversial titles but for me it actually puts me off watching someone searching for the negative aspect.
100%. Totally nonsense opinion from someone who thinks what they say is hallowed gospel! Absolutely wrong on all accounts on this car. Universally favoured and loved, the 458 is an iconic modern Ferrari.
could not disagree with you more. i've driven the 458 and 488 (and all the rest) many times, including back-to-back. while the 488 is much faster, the 458 is the perfect streetcar of all time. there is none better...
I've actually come to prefer the bassy sound of a turbocharged or supercharged engine but only if they aren't choked out by a closed air box and recirculating bypass valve. I love to hear whine of a supercharger and the turbo spool and discharge to atmosphere with a blow off valve but not if it has that chu chu sound of the air going backwards against the compressor wheel.
That Giallo Triplo Strato paint. Man, it's gorgeous. I found myself going head over heels with this kind of multi-layered yellow. Giallo Triplo Strato, Giallo Orion, AMG Solarbeam and so forth. They are gorgeous.
Took me 2 years until I found a 458 in Giallo Triplo Strato, worth the wait, but damn they're hard to find in the used market. It's my favorite ferrari color by far.
@@tg14764 no surprise, triple-layer paints are expensive. I remember TopGear did a twin test between 458 and 12C. The 458 got the Giallo Triplo Strato paint, quoted at GBP11k. That was 2011.
Jay, the 458 in its stock form does not measure up to the 430 Scuderia in some respects; however, with only a few mods you could hit this car way out of the ballpark! It's not the fastest thing on the road, but it does have character. Thanks for mentioning Damian and his drive every Ferrari quest, I love his channel!
@@jafooli thanks for the reply. Thats not really a mod though right? Can it be retrofitted or does one need to find a car that had that option originally
Is this the one filmed by stowe? Been waiting for this! My mate said “ he saw some bloke in a layby in a Hawaiian shirt with a camera and a yellow Ferrari “ 😂
The problem is the 458 Italia is the perfect everyday Ferrari. Reliable, adaptable and with low maintenance. If I could own just one Ferrari it would be the 458 and in a spec similar to the one you just drove 👌
@@MrGB1999 they are low maintenance compared to what came before. It's only in the event something goes wrong which is quite rare you'll be paying Ferrari prices, unless you have a good warranty in place.
Bizarre comment on the looks. the vast, vast majority reacted to the 458 with relief that they had gone back to building really good looking, beautiful cars after the dog's breakfast that was the 430: a cra that only looks passable from one angle, and downright ugly from most.
Excellent review James. I got to drive the 458 for many laps around Dunsfold where I was encouraged to drive it quite hard, at the time I thought it was the best car I had ever driven, which it was in all fairness. We purchased a 12c as the 458 was out of our budget(I still think they command a price way way more than they are worth), after driving the 12c I personally think it smashes the 458 in every department, it has a much more luxurious interior, it’s considerably quicker, it’s more comfortable to drive, has good storage(similar to the 458) and it’s never going to beat the 12c on a track. I do think the 458 sounds good though and I also think it’s a very good looking car from the outside. If they were available for say 50k less than what they are fetching now, then I think they would be an excellent choice or worth looking at, but as you do rightly say there are much better cars out there for the money, the 650 being one but also I would also say the 12c and by a good stretch too.
I absolutely love the 458 having had a test drive round the back lanes near goodwood. However - they aren't good value rising in price well above £100k!
The fact it doesn't have any scoops is the reason I think this is the most recent best looking ferrari. Its been downhill from here. And look at them now? Awful.
Of all youtubers I’d guess you’d be the one saying this, yes. 😊 On the steering, are u sure all cars had the exact correct toe/alignment? Just some mm’s off makes a world of difference, and of ALL 2nd hand cars I’ve bought NONE had the correct toe.
Tyres also make a massive difference. Bothers me a bit how reviewers never mention this. A car with great steering can feel like shit if it's not aligned properly or has crap tyres. Also in older cars you have to consider how worn all the steering and suspension bushes might be. It's like complaining about brake feel on a car with some Halfords brake pads and 15 year old brake fluid.
I do believe the cars alignment had been done recently, and it was on PS4S I am sure. I will mention tyres if I think they are to blame but here they are not. The issue is that the power steering has too much assistance at too high a speed - only beyond 70 does it weight up but I want that at 50
Purist here, and imo ANY sports/super car that doesn't have 3 pedals is overrated. The last truly timeless Ferraris were the 550/456/360 generation of cars. Not just in looks, but because real manual transmission cars were still far more common and not outright unavailable. A big part of what made these types of cars so cool and exclusive to me back in the day was that it took more than just money to own and drive one. You had to know how to drive. I remember being a kid and hoping that I'd do well at learning to operate a manual transmission so that I could one day drive my dream cars. The fact that that is gone forever makes these things entirely uninteresting to me, outside of some video entertainment, for which I thank you JayEmm!
I own a 458 Italia. Love it. But I don’t begrudge your opinion. To each their own. You don’t feel the same way I do. That’s what makes markets. If we all loved the 458, the world would be a boring place. I enjoy your channel. Carry on.
This and the 488 to me are among the most beautiful Ferraris ever! Most say the Speciale is the one to get over the stock. I never tested any of them. But I would still buy it because I hardly believe it's bad and just because of looks and because it's the last NA V8 Ferrari! 250 GT Lusso 430 Spider Manual 458 Spider Portofino 812 GTS Purosangue La Ferrari Aperta All on my list! 😅
no, the Ferrari 458 is not overrated. It's a naturally-aspirated prancing horse gem. And the McLaren MP4-12C is the correct comparison to the 458, as they were both launched at a similar time. The McLaren 650S was launched in 2014 when Ferrari were about to launch the 458 Speciale. The standard 458 Italia wipes the floor with a 12C and gives the 650S a good run for its money.
Hmm not sure I agree sorry. Been in a few 458,s and spoke to lots of owners. I know a 488 owner who sold it and got a 458 because he preferred it. Great cars. They sound epic under acceleration. Handle brilliant.
If you are not a fErrari devotee, where you think all Ferrari's are great, you will understand the significance of this car. By far, the best looking Ferrari in the last 20 yrs.
Just finding out that after the 458, Ferrari did their styling in-house definitely explains some things. The 458 is just so proper and elegant but subtle to its sporting credibility. The cars that came after are just to fussy and aggressive looking. If I wanted a aggressive and crazy styled Italian car, I’d go for a Lamborghini. Ferrari has lost the classy elegance that really made their cars stand out. The Roma is a good attempt though and the 812 is a very good looking front engined v12 gt
I predict 348 prices shifting. I think it's such a beautiful car, and sounds great too. In terms of styling, I thought the 458 was the next beautiful Ferrari. I'm trying to remember whether J reviewed the Speciale. Well done to J for questioning what many had accepted as Gospel.
For me I love this car because of childhood nostalgia. A car I always chose in games and a car that was the poster child of the one mobile game I played way too much on my iPod touch, asphalt 6.
I just test drove a 2013 458 couple days ago and I totally agree with you. Although it’s a very nice ride but it didn’t get me as excited as I was hoping. The dealership is calling me back to come get the car but I am having 2nd thought.
The way you speak of these cars, the way you have real facts and you are not a show-off but a man that is a true petrolhead makes me love your videos more and more! Creators like you should be more in this world! Thank you and even when I am strongly envy, it is a envy where I wish you have more and more fun and more and more dream cars! The world needs gentleman like you.
In the US/China/Korea/most of South East Asia it is perhaps more forgiving, but in the UK/most of Europe/Japan/Hong Kong, you basically become a butler or a custodian once you buy a Ferrari, you need the perfect service record from designated shops, and need historian/curator level of knowledge to be able to pass your car to the next buyer and/or stay associated with Ferrari, perhaps I'm a bit exaggerating, but you get my gist
The reason it’s not exciting you is because you keep short shifting it. It loves revs. Just about every car you test, you semi give it some and potter around on engine braking. You need a bit of private road or a track to get a proper idea of what this thing can do. I’ve drove one of these and absolutely rung it’s neck. It’s most alive at the top of the rev range.
I remember when the 458 hit the showrooms- I stopped in on a lark to look at one, and surprisingly, I fit in it! (Being 6' 4" limits what I can drive) So years later, I bought it's great grandchild, the F8 Tributo!
I have to agree with Jayem. The 458 power plants gives you no more juice after 8000 rpm. And the car does not feel planted at the rear as it should be.
I really enjoy your perspective and rather unbiased opinions on these next level cars but stating that the MP124c/650s is a better value/buy than a 458 is really stretching it, to be polite!
Thank you James - wonderful piece. I fully get the 650s comment but as you said it the shot was the triple layered yellow 458 driving away and it just looked special - I don’t think the McLaren brand is quite their yet - and I know we’re talking about intangibles here but they count as you’ll doubtless agree - thanks again, wonderful.
I have been very fortunate to be a 458 Italia owner since 2011 , bought new. Over 60 000 km done , including multiple track days. Incredible driving machine , excellent reliability , no major issues. The only car I would change it for is the Speciale. Overall score 10/10.

Ferrari 458 salvage rebuild see how it goes so you can do this yourselves one day too!! Thanks in advance everyone.
You’ve got to commend the honesty here, James is very much qualified to give a valid take on this car. I’m an old school bang for buck man who enjoys and forgives old flaws and sees them as fun quirks so this is a modern expensive Ferrari to me. Although when I saw one in a supermarket car park earlier this year I did stare in awe, it’s a tremendous thing to behold. My first prancing horse will have sticky buttons and be seen as a bad Ferrari to most I am sure 😂
458 is the last of the greatest Ferraris. Bashing on this is like seriously lack of taste.. the last NA v8 , that really revs, the grin this makes on your face 🤩🥰 The 430 has nothing on this.. nothing!!!
21:15 - 21:26 Whoops :) When the 458 was introduced, and Clarkson drove it on TopGear, i went through the motions, being excited because "new Ferrari". ..but it never actually got a hold of me, like the 355 especially, but also the 348, 360 and slightly less the 430. ..and since then it only got worse, with the turbocharged engines. I see it this way: The older Ferraris were build for people who love cars, care about the soul of a car, the experience aso. The 458 onwards are build for those who want to be fast, where soul, or the experience besides being fast, is secondary or lower on the list of priorities.
Who complains about driving a Ferrari? That is my dream car the 458 Italia and if you do not like it then by all means give it to me because people like me would love to drive a Ferrari.
Ferrari should have never ditched this interior. I'm liking the new Ferraris but the interior layouts are atrocious. The Purosangue interior already looks dated, the sf90 interior is stupid, the roma screens look cheap. What I think the 458 is not overrated at is the fact that it is a Ferrari, a really good Ferrari, especially for the observer. Until the f8 came out, the 488 had left very cold because of how good the 458 design was. Lovely Christmas video
As someone who took delivery of a 458 less than 2 weeks ago as of typing this, of course the title of your video caught my eye. I completely agree with your comparison to the 430 Scuderia. I'm pretty sure everyone agrees with you here, including Jay (I think the title is click bait). The 458 is adored by practically all.
If you get a chance, I’d like to hear your thoughts on the new C8 Z06 compared to your 458. Congrats on the acquisition!!!
@@brandonchism6960 thank you! That is a topic I will likely cover on my channel. From a styling perspective the Z06 does nothing for me. I need to get my hands on one and see how it drives.

Being overrated is not the same as being bad
Weirdly enough, the lack of sidescoops is why I prefer this over 488 and F8
Me too!
It's the lines that pininfarina intended. 488 cuts these lines. 488 still looks amazing, but not as pure as original designed.
Couldn't agree more. The lack of scoops gives the 458 a timeless elegance that will still be sought after decades from now. To my eye, the 488 looks like someone butchered a 458 with an after market bodykit from Alibaba.
I love the scoops.
@@jafooli Can't agree more. The 458 was pure and perfect by itself - but the 488 introduced unnecessary design elements (yes, I know they were completely necessary from the engineering point of view) in order to make it look "new".

@@karldergrosse-333 really? Sounds pretty unreasonable.

This was peak Ferrari in my honest opinion. Pinninfarina left after or shortly after this car, and Ferraris styling went into the gutter until very recently with the 296. Shame this or the speciale never came with a stick.

Very few cars are lauded over quite as much as this car was, it was incredible how generally well-received this car was
was the first ferrari that wowed me from a looks standpoint, as an actual adult. still looks beautiful. more than beautiful.

True. Those panel gaps! Looks like a car someone knocked up in a garden shed. Don't understand the iconic status of the F40.
You're forgetting one thing "Racecar"

Here is my advice on doing a review P3:
1. Get a spider
2. Sample one with a Kline exhaust
3. Take it to a proper twisty mountain road.
4. drive in race only
5. Drive in manual only
6. Report back
This cars greatest strengths (its breadth and versatility) can also be its weaknesses.
There is no other Ferrari out there which ticks the boxes which the 458 does:
1- Last Pininfarina Designed V8 Ferrari. Regarded by most Ferraristas as one of the best looking modern Ferrari to date.
2- Last Naturally Aspirated V8 by Ferrari, revving up to 9000 rmp.
3- Cult Following globally
4- V8 Sound
5- Build quality far better than any previous Ferrari. Period.
6- More drivable than ANY previous Ferrari . Period.
7- Excellent Factory warranty and 7 year free service plan. Better than anything Ferrari had offered for previous models
8- F1 Technology etc etc etc.
If Ferrari 458 Italia is not a better car in every single aspect, than any of its predecessor than is it the 488 GTB? or F8 Tributo? I know what most of my car friends think about the turbo charged Ferraris based upon the 458 Platform...
All the stats don't matter
It looks badass

And Lamborghinis were never built for people who genuinely enjoy driving, just those who like to be seen.

That'd be a curious thing to see, especially since James was lukewarm on the 360 Challenge Stradale, to say the least.
But I was also not in love with the F430
Agree except any argument that favours the V12. 90s / early 00s Ferrari V8s is the best exhaust note (and intake sound) of them all.
i always wondered why the more modern ferrari v8s didnt sound quite right. ive always loved the 355 and 360 for their sounds but the later cars dont quite hit in the same way. it reminds me of when you were talking about a ferrari v12 (mightve been a 599) ages ago and how the exhaust needed to be set up as a 6 into 1 to get that epic v12 sound which you expect.

The fact it doesn't have any scoops is the reason I think this is the most recent best looking ferrari. Its been downhill from here. And look at them now? Awful.
Of all youtubers I’d guess you’d be the one saying this, yes. 😊
On the steering, are u sure all cars had the exact correct toe/alignment?
The fact that that is gone forever makes these things entirely uninteresting to me, outside of some video entertainment, for which I thank you JayEmm!

no, the Ferrari 458 is not overrated.

I just test drove a 2013 458 couple days ago and I totally agree with you. Although it’s a very nice ride but it didn’t get me as excited as I was hoping. The dealership is calling me back to come get the car but I am having 2nd thought.
Ok we will meet at Stonehenge and fight to the death
Second best Mid Engine V8 Ferrari. The 430 is still the best.
Never trust someone who doesn't like the 458.
McLaren 650 over a 458? No chance!
For me, the 458 Italia ties the F355 as Ferrari's greatest mid engined V8 supercar EVER. ✌🏻🇮🇹
This is the most accurate response here
The most clickbated title i have ever seen
The most? You must be new to the internet.
Don't hate the player, hate the game.
@@thomasparkins6749 this is one of the most ridiculous modern sayings.
Thanks for saving me a 5ver on carvertical. Cleared up a finance issue on a car were looking at
The reason it’s not exciting you is because you keep short shifting it. It loves revs. Just about every car you test, you semi give it some and potter around on engine braking. You need a bit of private road or a track to get a proper idea of what this thing can do. I’ve drove one of these and absolutely rung it’s neck. It’s most alive at the top of the rev range.
You're making the assumption because you didn't see it that I didn't do it
I'd like to see you review a C8 Corvette and compare it to the 458 which the C8 dev engineers used as their benchmark.
I remember when the 458 hit the showrooms- I stopped in on a lark to look at one, and surprisingly, I fit in it! (Being 6' 4" limits what I can drive)
So years later, I bought it's great grandchild, the F8 Tributo!
Will always be THE dream car
I have to agree with Jayem. The 458 power plants gives you no more juice after 8000 rpm. And the car does not feel planted at the rear as it should be.
I really enjoy your perspective and rather unbiased opinions on these next level cars but stating that the MP124c/650s is a better value/buy than a 458 is really stretching it, to be polite!
I welcome the response, but please share your logic :)
Anyone who’s seen Carfections 250 GTO video will know there’s only one GOAT. That car sounds like God.
I would forgive anyone who bought a 458
I have been very fortunate to be a 458 Italia owner since 2011 , bought new. Over 60 000 km done , including multiple track days. Incredible driving machine , excellent reliability , no major issues. The only car I would change it for is the Speciale. Overall score 10/10.
Hey folks these creators are just so inspiring... hoping after you enjoy this content and between the wait time for their new uploads you may want to help us gain some traction on our content at Father and son Ferrari rescue.
I've noticed that car journalists mostly praise new Ferrari models when new, but eventually get around to trashing them when newer models come out.
Scud is a hard act to follow. I'd have a manual 430 as a contender keeper.
I remember that Vicky Butler-Henderson was almost moved to tears when she drove it on 5th Gear or Top Gear.
