Thank you for sharing again. I have been researching the roles of Merchant Marines during war time. It appears most Merchant Marines don't get much for veteran benefits if they serve during war time although I guess the Merchant Marines during World War II did full veteran status, but they didn't get it until 1988. Anyways I did research this and honestly, I am aware what the Merchant Marines fulfill a role for the military and still get factored into the strategy. My older brother in Navy has been telling me to get a job at the Sealift Command if I pursue a job in the Merchant Marines. I know you’re SIU, but I know in the big picture, SIU and MSC are going out there to help in the war effort. I will be honest; I am scared but I won’t run away either.

Seems like what they could be asking is if we went to war would you be willing to go to those war zone areas to do your job still which could result in you firing back from the ship or docks. But at that point if would be for the overall safety and survival of your ship getting to and from home. Also would they be paying potential combat pay? Interesting topic.

NO.... I will strongly advice you...if you don't know squat about the military and military operations and how the military conduct "Tactical" business... Do not assume... One of the first things you learn in the Army... "Mr. Eugene Lewis said: said assumption is the mother of all mistakes. ".... Yes there is a remote possibility that one ship may get in a minute scuffle... but... When a ship like a UNS ship is set to operate in hostile waters....SOP state...There is going to be an escort ship to provide security... You can't compare what happened in WW2 with todays War's...

You are right...during WW2 that was a big issue and it remains on the books that Merchant Mariner could be call to War....but that old and if y'all get call in todays conflicts would be mainly to do what you actually doing...except there are going to be instances were you need escorts... case by case only... There is no need to panic or be scare or scare people from joining the Merchant Marine...
