    Its helpful that you showed the beaked under grind, and the over grind.
    I bought a caliper and a angle meter to try to put "stock" numbers on the angles of the dressers. So far i haven't seen a video where anyone has broken down the dresser angles into that detail.
    Appreciate your time in providing this video. Many of the other videos out there are less helpful than yours is.

    Great video! Thanks for the information! I've been running 451c for about a year, took me a little bit to get her figured out. Anyhow, I always like to see how other guys go about setting up their grinds.

    Thanks, Jake. The video is nice and clear and your explanations were easy to follow. A 20 degree top angle seems like it would be less "grabby". Great tip. I started working in the woods as a landing man. My job was to buck all the dirty knots and they handed me a saw and a file with about 1 minute of training. I had to learn how to file by hand or work myself to death. I got pretty good at it. I'm retired now and just cut firewood for personal use, but I still enjoy you young guys who do it for a living.

    Hello Jake, Thank you so much for this improved instructional on use of the Simington 451c grinder. I'm sure that at some point the user will "get it", but until then it's all a geometric mind game. Thanks for this assuring video and your experienced recommendations. Seasons greetings, and Happy New Year to you and all your subscribers!

    Thank you appreciate the video. I purchased a Simington 451c haven't set it up yet...use to have a Silvey Razor II....lost it in a divorce some years ago...sucks when they take the tools of your trade. Yes got some pointers thank you!...so Stihl or Oregon chain? Seems like the Stihl chain is a little harder...stays sharp longer. Shoe

      Hey shoe, if you’re used to a razor sharp ll then you’re going to love the simington!! As far as chain goes I run Oregon, nothing wrong with stihl chain. But I don’t think there is a big enough difference to justify the cost.

      @@jakemesa3211 That's good to hear getting ready to set up the grinder this weekend...have both chains...Stihl chain seems harder and tends to carry an edge longer...but enjoy hand filling Oregon chain better using a Oberg 150 flat (goofy file).

    I bought a used 450 years ago after my Silvey took a crap and when I picked it up, all the adjustment bolts on everything were loose, including the dresser settings. I've tinkered with it again this past season after it sat in storage for half a decade, including copying my cutting partners settings on his 451. My chain is smoother, but his definitely limbs better and holds it's edge longer, but our ground teeth look nearly identical. It's pretty bizzare.

      @jakemesa3211  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What’s the raker depth on both chains?

    • @joepesci8930
      @joepesci8930 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jakemesa3211 we both use those old Carlton file-o-plate gauges, on the softwood setting. I'm not sure what the depth is, looks like .035-.040ish. We are in South central WA state, cut same kind of timber pond pine, piss fir, Doug, tamarack, ect
      Both using .063 3/8 Stihl full skip chain 105 driver.
      I've ground my chains on his grinder and immediate improvement in performance, but the all the angles are exactly the same it's so weird.
      Only difference besides his being the newer model simington is I use a blue wheel and he uses the salmon.
      I've been cutting 22 years, he's been cutting 31.

    • @jakemesa3211
      @jakemesa3211  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@joepesci8930 that’s strange man.. I don’t know much about the old grinders but I think the are pretty much the same. How are the angles on the inside of the tooth? I’m thinking it’s something to do with the angles in side the tooth. Or possibly the angle forward or aft on the side of the tooth. It really shouldn’t have anything to do with the stones I run blue and salmon stones. I really can’t tell a difference in cutting performance from one or the other. Also are you cleaning the stone totally off so there is no black on it at all. I just wanna make sure your teeth aren’t getting burnt. I know these may seem like dumb questions. You’ve been cutting way longer than I have so I imagine you know just as much as I do about grinding a chain. I’m just trying to get a sense of what could be going on.

      @@jakemesa3211 everything matches up corner to corner, we've even disassembled chains and took off just the links with the cutters and used digital calipers and everything is nearly identical.
      I dress the stones before every chain and I blow off the chains with air before I grind them so I minimize the buildup on the stones.
      Only other thing I've heard is once the simingtons get wore out, sometimes you have to rebalance and re-shim the bases of the motors, sometimes they get out of alignment, but then I would start seeing angle differences on the left vs right cutters so I'm told.
      I can take my cutting partners chain and cut 6 hours and it will be dull but it will still cut. I can take my chain and cut probably 1.5 hours and it will be as dull as his 6 hour chain.
      Im stumped.

      @@joepesci8930 damn man I don’t know. I have the same understanding as you when it comes to them being out of alignment. Should be seeing different angles from one side to the other. I don’t know man that’s weird!

    Just don't adjust to much stuff at once when you're goin off someone else's grind and you don't like it or it don't work for the timber you cut, I had a long road after my ol man bought a simmington from a cousin that picked it up in payment for a job............except they both grew up on silvey pro sharp grinders and me dad about had a stroke and crushed it with his pickup it made him so mad he couldn't get it to grind correctly. Also be careful when you pull the arm back and reach through to feel the tooth and make sure I got it all, the grinder will almost tip over! Because yer finger hits the stone, on the bottom corner she'll lance an inch of middle finger enough for 10 stitches

    Jake I appreciate your video ..your video was detailed and easy to fallow along my grinder is a old grinder it’s a 450 I’m learning as I go I’m going to save your video and watch it over and over again and put your work you have done and try to match it up with my grinder I got a new wheel to it’s a blue stone and got a new chain to play with my old wheel was set up to put a lot of top beak on the tooth . Again thank you for the video bud you are a great teacher I’m going to keep playing with it and I hope to be better by the next trip out to go cut . I got a new 592 with a 36 inch bar with full house chain also got me a 372 xpw with a 32 I want to run square ground chain on . Jake you are the man one day I would like to meet up and go cut 💪

      Thanks man I’m glad you found the video helpful. 450’and 451’s are basically the same. All the adjustments are the same. Knowing that it’s putting a lot of beak on your tooth helps. There is only a couple things that will cause that. Which brings to mind one adjustment that I forgot to mention. It’s the adjuster knobs that come up against the back of the tooth to hold it in place when grinding. I’ll make another video about that as it’s hard to explain, but my guess is you may need to use that adjustment to push the chain forward more in the grove that holds the chain. Other possibility is that the side of your stone may not be wide enough. Like I said I’ll try make another video after thanksgiving about that. I appreciate you taking the time to watch my videos. And hopefully someday we can meet up. Happy thanksgiving to you and your loved ones. Stay safe my friend!
