Richard, when you asked if it breaks the rules of the magic system that Vin can pierce a copper cloud: there is an explanation later in the trilogy. It's internally consistent, even if it doesn't appear so in book 1. That's all I can say for spoiler reasons. PS love y'all's work, thanks for making great content!

(No spoilers) My favorite character ever that sanderson created is Vin, the way her struggles somewhat complement the world building(specifically the mist) was fantastic and hit way too close to home for me, everytime when Vin's feeling down, she always relies to the mist, she finds comfort to the mist and the way I vividly remember how the mist, swirling, surrounding around Vin-----was the most cozy feeling I ever had reading, it was like wrapped around a fantastical, supernatural blanket or something, plus I was also reading it at night with my blanket so it was the ideal reading experience. Most of my favorite moments actually was just Vin roaming around the city covered with mist at night doing misty things and the occasional Vin chilling at the roof. P.S: I love my blanket, I don't know how I could continue to live the world without it. @@IndiaTidesthey’ve read all four books but they’ve not mentioned anything or least Richard didn’t say anything if he read the books, so let’s not spoilt it
@58:00 they are discussing if the ability to pierce Cooper clouds breaks the magic system. I believe it doesn't. It's made clear only vin can do that and it's for a reason that will be later revealed. I think when you have a hard rule in your magic system it's totally fine to break that rule if there is a legitimate reason to-do so in order to drive the story. It also sets up later reveals later on. And you absolutely don't need to explain why the rule is able to be broken as long as you're consistent on how it's done.
Audiobook listener here. They pronounce it Fare-Uh-Kemmy. But as Sanderson says, his works are pronounced however the reader wants them to be! Y’all are the best! Listening to well of ascension right now and can’t wait for the review.
Final empire is great but it wasn’t until Hero of Ages I was truly blown away. Just finished Mistborn era 2 today and the epilogues made me cry. My favorite characters of the Cosmere are in era 2, and some of the most fun I’ve had reading Sanderson
Surprisingly I actually thought the Hero of Ages was the weakest of the three. I have looked at a few reviews and they always seem to rank them the opposite how I rank them. I LOVE the Well of Ascension so much, I just loved the characters and how the plot and world was expanded.
@@sideshowb.a.b.s.8913 I just didn’t find it as intriguing as the well of ascension. I did love a lot of the aspects in The hero of ages, but I wasn’t the biggest fan of the last chapter.
I am so happy. Since the creation of the podcast I have been waiting for this video. I could feel that Austin had some of the Red Rising passion back in him. Very excited for book 2. Now it’s time to convince Richard to read The Lives of Tao, my favorite Sci-Fy book
The best thing about this system is how simplistic it is, while also not being simplistically vague. Don’t feel bad, guys. I started with the Stormlight Archive as well.
Don't mind me cackling over Richard unintentionally spoiling half the series 😂😂 You guys are making me want to reread this book real bad now, but I also need to reread Stormlight... I need more time lol. Honoured to be part of the 'good group' who faithfully watches till the very last second, I will wear that badge proudly hahahah
Two things. Marsh does teach Vin how to use bronze. It actually becomes one of if not her most powerful metal (the coppercloud piercing). And Renoux was a Kandra not a mistwraith, they are cousins but not the same thing.
Austin are you hyped up for the next two in the trilogy? If not ima just say the The Well of Ascension and the Hero of Ages is such a step up from the first. Mistborn and Red Rising are my two most favorite fantasy series, and I would say they are equal. (Thank you so much btw for your hype on Red Rising, you were what convinced me to read it lmao)
Kelsier is very interesting because when you advance with the trilogy and specially with other Cosmere books your perception about the character changes a lot.
I kinda always thought Kelsier was a bad person, he is a great character that I love because of his depth but he is very bigoted toward nobles and while he has great reason to I never liked him lumping everyone into the same category or how he treats his fellow Skaa who are just trying to survive and he will straight up kill them because they work for nobles. Again he is a fantastic character but kinda a garbage person who really thinks the ends justify the means. What’s really fun is reading era two with the ghostbloods having not read stormlight yet! I had no clue what was happening which just forced me to finally start stormlight which is now my favorite series.
I started out by reading Elantris. I wanted to see his journey as a writer as part of my experience with him. I believe Sanderson says his books have mature themes without mature content. Which is why it has that good general appeal. Can't complain too much about the final scores! Can't wait to see you all continue this series. Outside of the secret projects, I'm fully caught up and waiting on Wind and Truth!
I got through book three of Stormlight and I decided to wait for book four until closer to book five releasing. I went back and started Mistborn and I'm so excited! I just finished book 1 today and I love the characters and the magic system is so fleshed out!!
I read mistborn after reading first two stormlight books. I dare say it was a harder read for me then the first two stormlight books. Those two series are just amazing.
Super excited you're finally reading Mistborn! It's a fun read that leads into one of the best conclusions to a fantasy series I've read. Book 1 is definitely the weakest, so you're going to love the next 2! P.S. Sazed is one of Sanderson's best characters. He's up there with Dalinar, Kaladin, and Taravangion!
People who like Kel either never have known someone with his sacrifice anything for the goal ( this includes what is not theirs to sacrifice ) or think they would enjoy his easy spot light and quick mind. but make no mistake anything he does that is positive for everyone is a happy accident. think about it he went and killed himself to force vin into feeling obligated to do what he couldn't but was to proud to bring it to her face to face.
SPOILER ALERT FOR WOTK I think that story that Hoid tells to Kaladin on Shatterd Plains that it is story of Mistborn i some way It sounds very familliar. They were killing people because of their leader of something like that and when they enterd his tower, they founded old man. Sounds like Lord Ruler and he being old without Feruchemy bracelets I may be wrong but it sounds similar so it could be easter egg What do you think?
Just touching on the magic system and breaking its own rules. The way I interpreted it after reading Book 1 is the ‘rules’, like you can’t break through a copper cloud’ was set by the Lord Ruler and his Cantons. As part of protecting his rule he almost gaslit the population into limitations of allomancy. Hope that makes sense
Loving these longer videos, I need to know what the sazed spoilers were, also mistborn: secret history spoils things up to book 6 of mistborn (bands of mourning) they are *minor* to plot, but it takes away a cool reveal about the world
Congrats guys on Dragonsteel! Austin, I think you’re really going to like the rest of the trilogy. I love Mistborn and imo, it’s the weakest of the three books. Would highly recommend reading them together tho because the conversation was pretty uneven. I just love it when I see you guys both approach a review with that confident knowledge in your opinions and the material!
There is a huge reason to read secret history which heavily links with Stormlight. Especially book 4 and probably 5. I see it as essential to fully understand a certain mysterious character in Stormlight and the greater cosmere
I honestly thought Vin-Elend romance was just okay until i ended up bawling my eyes out right at the end. Them in secret history is the most impactful part of mistborn for me as much as i love the world and the magic
1:05:00 I'm not sure what Richard is talking about off the top of my head, but something else from Rhythm of War comes to mind. There's a couple parts where they talk about how aluminum blocks the ability of spanreeds to function
Its funny watching this, cause mistborn has so many secrets that you dont get until further in the series, and i see why its hard for richard not to spoil some of the twists since things that are set up one way in book one turns out to be something different down the road
I ' Am so glad you guys did Mistborn such a great book. I have read mistborn as a first fantasy book as a gift from my brother who was into wheel of time a lot. He said its basically better shorter faster. The convo was very one sided but enjoyable. Would have been better if Richard has a slight idea what is happening inside the book and doesnt spoil it :/
Happy to see this review pop up. Loved all the characters. Hopefully Rich will finish the series! Marsh has to be one of my favourite characters ever… That’s all I’ll say for now!
Can we talk about how this book is called The Final Empire not Mistborn? It’s the Mistborn trilogy and gets referred to as Mistborn but it does have its own title! And sorry Richard but Austin was pronouncing feruchemy correctly. I love this trilogy and did a re-read of it earlier this year for an online book club. Vin is my favourite character but Sazed’s character has such an impact going forward. Enjoy the next book! ❤
So glad to see this! I love the trilogy so much, Sazed best guy ever! My second most anticipated episode of the podcast ahah Austin, I'm happy you have this world in your life now ;) Congratulations on the panels at Dragonsteel!
It was a perfect book at the time it came out. It also has done wonderfully for the mythology of the Cosmere and Brandon's growth as an author. I cherish this series for it's place in our journey through the Cosmere😊 Era 2 books give detail to the world, but are much weaker books. My favorite character there was the Neuro divergent lady 😊😊😊
I find it funny that I've never heard a single spoiler for Mistborn, (besides the ending of book one from the Sanderson lectures) and Austin's apparently heard all of them. I have been spoiled far too often on Stormlight Archive however.
On magic systems. I know Austin didn’t like the series lol but one of my favorite and most thought out magic systems to this day is the wheel of time. Such a cool system
Liked the series but can't say I loved it. My appreciation of Sanderson is higher than my actual love for reading his books if that makes sense. Several other series have done more for me (the caveat being I haven't read Stormlight lol so perhaps my opinion is invalid). Final Empire: 4/5 - Well of Ascension 3.5/5 - The Hero of Ages 4/5
@@2ToRamble BTW - Mike said on one of his livestreams recently that he would love to collab with you guys again. Definitely something you should consider because that was great last time!
not sure if the change was intentional or acknowledged somewhere, but i do appreciate the subtle change to the 5 star scale system. For whatever reason it feels less arbitrary/more concrete! :)
Very curious to see how you guys feel about the next two books in the series because WOA is my favorite just narrowly beating Final Empire for me but I see where a lot of people have it as their lowest of the Mistborn books. Also though I like HOA some aspects of the story fell flat to me so very curious to see your thoughts! Keep up the great work!
I treat all three Mistborn books as one giant book like Way of Kings or Oathbringer so Final Empire feels very much like a part one before an interlude.
@@ryanhoward22 In terms of THIS book, he is breaking the rules though. Saying oh you need to read more books to figure it out isn't always a valid excuse.
@@lkay398yeah, but knowing Sanderson you should have some confidence he’s gonna bring it all together at some point. I had initially thought, oh he broke the rule, but my immediate thought after was that there has to be more to this. Then i got my creative juices flowing and the reveal was next level for me
Fantastic episode! Really enjoyed it. My only complaint is the slight Elend slender. He's fantastic ~ I've read Mistborn years ago, maybe I should re-read again them as well.. And! I'm excited for Name of the Wind. I HATED that book and to hear that someone else also didn't is very fun for me 😂 Goodluck in Dragonsteel!
I gave it 4 stars. I really enjoyed it. I got invested in the story, I was really curious about the world, and I liked the magic system. What I didn't like was the pacing and some of the characters. The pacing was weird. The first 30% of the book it was so slow, and I was so confused about the world. Other times things happen too quickly: Vin is instantly good at pretending to be a noble, her feelings for Elend came out of nowhere, etc. Then all the hell breaks loose in the last 5% of the book. Also so much was happening off-page. About the characters: I liked Vin and I instantly connected to her but I can't say the same for the rest of them. Kelsier supposedly is this very charismatic leader, but he didn't come across as such, at least for me. I didn't like him that much. And then the rest of the characters: Dox, Breeze, Ham, Clubs, Spook, etc feel like NPCs, I feel like I know them so little, thus I don't really care. (I'm writing this before even watching the video so that my opinion is not influenced by your comments 😊)
As someone who's read stormlight already, can someone explain how Allomancy/feruchemy connects to the ROW epilogue? I didn't pick up on what Richard was talking about.
I could be wrong the more obvious connection is with the warbreaker magic system, but I was drawn to hoids coin and thought there was a connection to feruchemy
I can never decide if I prefer Mistborn era 1 or Stormlight, it normally depends on what I'm reading at the time. I prefer Alchemy as a magic system over Stormlight's magic because it is so clearly defined by the rules of each metal. How's that, Ben?

Thanks a bunch!!
@@yxanimations i agree well of ascension really dived into the characters which I enjoyed. But the sanderlanche in Hero of Ages? So so good.
@@sideshowb.a.b.s.8913 I just didn’t find it as intriguing as the well of ascension. I did love a lot of the aspects in The hero of ages, but I wasn’t the biggest fan of the last chapter.
32:14 i yelled "YES" when you said Sazed. He's the absolute GOAT
I am so happy. Since the creation of the podcast I have been waiting for this video. I could feel that Austin had some of the Red Rising passion back in him. Very excited for book 2. Now it’s time to convince Richard to read The Lives of Tao, my favorite Sci-Fy book
Time for Well of Ascension 😅
The goat mist born book imo
The best mistborn book, there is one part that I did not like about it, probably the lowest low mistborn had gotten but also has the highest high.
easily the best book
I don't get the hate for that book. It's one of my favorite Sandersons.
Yes you are one of us!
Two things. Marsh does teach Vin how to use bronze. It actually becomes one of if not her most powerful metal (the coppercloud piercing). And Renoux was a Kandra not a mistwraith, they are cousins but not the same thing.
Congratulations on the news, guys! Shall we expect a video of the event? Well, I am, certainly 🎉
We will see if they allow us!
Honored that I was even a slight part of you reading RR 🫡. Im definitely excited to read the rest!
Congrats on the big news at the end, guys! Much deserved!
Thank you!!
I got through book three of Stormlight and I decided to wait for book four until closer to book five releasing. I went back and started Mistborn and I'm so excited! I just finished book 1 today and I love the characters and the magic system is so fleshed out!!
@10010 bending the rules on piercing copper clouds? There’s always another secret. RAFO
Book 2 of this trilogy is my favorite Fantasy book of all time! And yes, I've read other major series such as LOTR, Stormlight, etc
Thats getting me so hyped
Just finished first book of Mistborn today. Thanks for repping Sazed though. Every page that has interaction with Sazed was just so nice !
Just read this! Stoked that you guys are covering it
🙏
I read mistborn after reading first two stormlight books. I dare say it was a harder read for me then the first two stormlight books. Those two series are just amazing.
100% relate with your comment. I also found it quite difficult reading through first mistborn book after reading two stormlight archive books
Without spoiling later books, there was an explanation within hard magic system why Vin was able to pierce copper clouds.
SPOILER ALERT FOR WOTK
I think that story that Hoid tells to Kaladin on Shatterd Plains that it is story of Mistborn i some way
It sounds very familliar. They were killing people because of their leader of something like that and when they enterd his tower, they founded old man. Sounds like Lord Ruler and he being old without Feruchemy bracelets
I may be wrong but it sounds similar so it could be easter egg
What do you think?
Been waiting for this, just finished it myself!
Great timing!
I’m so excited to see both of your opinions on the current Mistborn books.
Congrats on the Dragonsteel Nexus panel. My friend and I are going to be there, super pumped!
Hope to see you there!
YO, I didn’t know Richard went to AU, that’s so cool!
I just graduated and love y’all’s content, keep it up!
Congrats!! Thats amazing man, love to see it. Thanks for the support!
Loving these longer videos, I need to know what the sazed spoilers were, also mistborn: secret history spoils things up to book 6 of mistborn (bands of mourning) they are *minor* to plot, but it takes away a cool reveal about the world
Mistborn: The Final Empire was my first Sanderson novel and the novel that brought me back into reading. Absolutely love the whole trilogy.
Oo nice, will have to read Secret History
MISTBORN AND 2TORAMBLE YES!!!
YEEEEEE
I need to know what Rich spoiled 😂
1:05:00 I'm not sure what Richard is talking about off the top of my head, but something else from Rhythm of War comes to mind. There's a couple parts where they talk about how aluminum blocks the ability of spanreeds to function
Spoilers for ROW
When taravodium messes with Wits metalminds
It was a good episode, but you guys should read them together, does make for a better discussion!
The Wax and Wayne books are my favorite in the cosmere.
Interesting!
Its funny watching this, cause mistborn has so many secrets that you dont get until further in the series, and i see why its hard for richard not to spoil some of the twists since things that are set up one way in book one turns out to be something different down the road
Ben!!!!
Dragonsteel!!!!
Goodluck figuring those out
I thoroughly enjoyed Mistborn. It was the first fantasy series I completed and I was hooked from the very first page.
I ' Am so glad you guys did Mistborn such a great book. I have read mistborn as a first fantasy book as a gift from my brother who was into wheel of time a lot. He said its basically better shorter faster. The convo was very one sided but enjoyable. Would have been better if Richard has a slight idea what is happening inside the book and doesnt spoil it :/
He will be rereading book 2 for next review!
Happy to see this review pop up. Loved all the characters. Hopefully Rich will finish the series! Marsh has to be one of my favourite characters ever… That’s all I’ll say for now!
I'll see you guys at Dragonsteel! Excited for your panel. Excellent video as usual
See you there!! Thanks a ton
My second most anticipated episode of the podcast ahah Austin, I'm happy you have this world in your life now ;)
Congratulations on the panels at Dragonsteel!
Thanks so much!
It was a perfect book at the time it came out. It also has done wonderfully for the mythology of the Cosmere and Brandon's growth as an author. I cherish this series for it's place in our journey through the Cosmere😊
Era 2 books give detail to the world, but are much weaker books.
That makes sense!
@@2ToRamble BTW - Mike said on one of his livestreams recently that he would love to collab with you guys again. Definitely something you should consider because that was great last time!
@@angussinclair1344 Thats so awesome! He's a blast, would love to again
not sure if the change was intentional or acknowledged somewhere, but i do appreciate the subtle change to the 5 star scale system. For whatever reason it feels less arbitrary/more concrete! :)
We announced the change back in episode #126 if you’re curious into how we rate and why we changed to the 5 star scale!
Thanks a bunch - we will be reviewing the rest so Im curious to see what the rest has in store
I've been waiting for this for so long 🎉🎉🎉🎉
I quite literally just finished the final empire. This is perfect.
🤝
I treat all three Mistborn books as one giant book like Way of Kings or Oathbringer so Final Empire feels very much like a part one before an interlude.
Been waiting for this one!!
In regards to the copper cloud and being able to see through it, Sanderson explains this in the hero of ages. Rich must have forgot that part.
He’s not breaking any rule. Gotta read more to find out or piece it together as you go if you can figure out the twists 👀
Then i got my creative juices flowing and the reveal was next level for me
@@ryanhoward22 This only applies if you have experience with him as an author.
Fantastic episode! Really enjoyed it. My only complaint is the slight Elend slender. He's fantastic ~
I've read Mistborn years ago, maybe I should re-read again them as well..
And! I'm excited for Name of the Wind. I HATED that book and to hear that someone else also didn't is very fun for me 😂
Goodluck in Dragonsteel!
Thank you!
I'm a simple man my favorites are Vin in Mistborn, Kaladin in Stormlight and Lightsong in Warbreaker.
Great review!
Lol - yes totally get you
