The D155W was introduced in 1971 and was the first amphibious bulldozer, a development of the first radio-controlled bulldozer which was introduced in 1967. One went to Chernobyl in the late 1980s. I wonder how many of the early '70s ones are still going?
Holy hell i was expecting to see an operator with a aqualung sitting in the seat operating it until i spotted the guy with the controller. Dammed amazing...
I'm right there with you. Dubai is probably a huge customer, with their reclamation projects of the sand shaped development and others planned and some completed, and visible from space. The time below is way too long to dive a day's worth, but why is the controller operator walking. Hell I'd be in a swivel easy chair, sippin suds, and doing wheelies. The only thing close to this in the fun factor, ,is the John Deere 764 HSD (High Speed Dozer). The coolest thing about it, is not the ease, (although put a rookie in in the morning, and he's a star by lunch with the toys attached auto leveling via gps etc) so much than the fact that it no longer tears up your fine grading by turning. Off topic possibly but still relevant to cool dozers, and exclusive abilities. This thing has got to be busy making deep water docks in rich neighborhoods like on the Inter Coastal Waterway in Fl.
+decoysk Its Japanese, and if there was a better way to do it, they would. Recent history has learn us that Japanese are not crazy when it comes to engenering. There is a reason why they do it this way.
+jpsholland I agree with you the Japanese are marvels at engineering. just seems like a slow process. its hard enough pushing dirt on land but dealing with water also ?? just think a dredge would be more efficient !
These have been in use in Japan for a long time. I lived in Japan in the 70's along the coast near Zushi . There was an old guy who had one of these machines and he would drive it up and down the beach from town to town cleaning out these mooring areas for the local fishermen. It was a lot of fun to watch.
Lots of people are saying that this is too slow or the wrong way to do it, that dredging would be better. But Japan only has a limited number of dredgers available. After the tsunami they had hundreds of harbours this size to repair and nowhere near enough machines to do it. Especially since many of those dredgers were also wrecked by the tsunami. So they did what the Japanese often do: they got creative and adapted what they had to hand. I think these machines are another fantastic example of Japanese ingenuity.
Getting a sea monster vibe from these things 😳 the last part with it coming up from the water was very Godzilla, like fittingly for a Japanese machine, lol
Operator as a young kid playing with his RC car in the living room... his mom says: "is that all your ever going to do is play with remote control toys?" Kid: "yup, I sure am"

This seems extremely inefficient. Yes it is pretty cool but I can think of several different ways to accomplish that job faster, cheaper and better. Drag-lines and dredges come to mind right off the top of my head.
"How did that go again? Triangle, circle, cross, cross, square.. no, triangle, circle, square, square... dammit, I'll never get this cheat memorised..."
Nobody has a more dangerous and stupid job as me...says the in flight missile repairman! Japanese dude in the back... I'll see your job, and raise you a pair of underwater Bulldozer operators! Men, we have a winner.
This is incredibly cool but soooo much more stupid than cool. It's too slow and plus how long will that machine last in the saltwater? They have underwater vacuum things that make more sense or even a crane dredge would make more sense
When a hurricane rolls through an area and takes much of the beach out to sea they pay crews to come in with regular dozers and push sand back to shore. This happens often on tourist beaches in Florida. You get around a year out of the machine then it is so eat up with salt that they scrap it and buy a new one. Bilge pump dredgers will be ate up by the salt as well. Bilge pump dredges work well but there has to be a reason for doing it this way. Either they save time or money or the final product is better. I live on a tiny lake (see large pond) that filled up with silt from upstream construction. The contractor had pay to clean it out and the crew that did the work used tracked dump trucks and excavators.
These machines featured date back to the early 70's...they are VERY tough & durable....& efficient at what they do compared to using an excavator, dragline or crane dredge...

What do you do for a living? I drive a damn bulldozer submarine now buy me a beer.
but, it's remote control, so is it really worth a beer? My 7 year old has remote control cars I don't buy him beers.. ;) lol 2:23 shows operator...

😂 Muly fist impression too
at 4:01 to the back right rear of the machine it looks like a seal popped up to the surface and then submerged again ! what do you think ??
dude you are right!!
Only 35 of these machines were ever produces
way to slow ,,,,what happens if it stalls out under water !

What I'd give to operate one of these beasts or have the opportunity to witness them in action! Definitely the peak of Komatsu engineering.

Bro these are nothing new. They were made in the 70s. It's not something they rigged together after the tsunami
Concept borrowed from WW2 era U.S tanks. Been around for decades.
Wonder if you can hear the backup alarm underwater? LOL
It was changed to a sonar signal to warn the fishies
Can probably hear it four miles
love how they are wearing hard hats. XD
bahaha... good one.. in case they fall in
I did this job for a while in the sea of Cortez. It's not a bad gig but it takes a long time to be able to hold your breath that long.
Lmao, bullshit, they're remote controlled.

Kind of steampunk, like something Captain Nemo might have.
Only in Japan .What an outstanding idea
Oh you have an R/C car? That's cute.
i've never seen anything like this befor!
You need to get out to underwater construction sites more.
They need to do that in the Susquehanna river in central Pennsylvania.

There may be underwater cameras that allow the operator to watch the blade's loading.
You cant see down there so how do they know what they`re doing?
A dredge would be more suitable for the job, lol.

Why expensive?
is the engine air cooled
Probably.
i think is water cooled , like a marine engine.
Eloy Fernandez It was a joke of cause its water cooled it`s under water ! lol !

Someone needs to learn how to operate an excavator...
I hope the fuel cap is on tight.
only in Japan!
And then it breaks down under water ?????
stick a tow line on it & pull it out & onto dry land..not a problem...

Larry Poston Dragline is the proper tool, or extended reach excavator on flotation
Larry Poston Engineering an underwater bulldozer is also a lot of effort. Theres always a reason people do ridiculous shit like this.
Derrick Blackburn I agree.
Larry Poston probably too shallow
Derrick Blackburn yep, like being bored with 8 mil in the back pocket.......

I wonder how long it can run out of the water without overheating?? The cooling system must depend on the water surrounding it.
It would be a bitch to work on if it ran out of fuel whilst underwater or worse yet had a serious mechanical break down....

Coolest thing I've seen all week!
Its like something from the mind of Dr Seuss but real.
Seems like a dragline or clamshell would be more productive here.
Nice would that work for gold dredging
How do they know what they’re doing underwater? Are there cameras fitted?
I doubt there's cameras - you wouldn't be able to see anything with all the silt being stirred up.
Skilled operators I guess.
Wonder what happens when they run it out of diesel. Doh.
I’d guess a cubic yard a minute tops. But mob-demob damned cheap. Rare ground that a crawler can work underwater.
Probably couldn’t see shit.
Since the tsunami, they've never been busier...all 5 remaining machines were fully restored & rebuilt...very efficient dozers...
que es lo que aparece en el mininuto 3:57
need to put them in 2nd gear
They are dredging the entrance making it deeper.
alguem sabe oque é isso!!!?
all that changed when the fire nation attacked....

they used em at pearl harbour

How do the operators hold their breath for so long??
