How to Fake 3D Extrude Type - Ancient After Effects Techniques

Okay, everybody gather round and come listen to grampa.
The After Effects you know today has some 3D extrusion tools built in. But back in the old days of motion graphics, we had to rely on trickery, fakery, and smoke and mirrors (or shell out big bucks for fancy software). Who knows, maybe you still have a use for this Z-Scale technique.
