I Didn't Expect this in Trinidad Carnival 2024

- The Trinidad and Tobago Carnival is an annual event held on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday in Trinidad and Tobago. This event is well known for participants' colorful costumes and exuberant celebrations. There are numerous cultural events such as "band launch fetes" running in the lead up to the street parade on Carnival Monday and Tuesday. It is said that if the islanders are not celebrating it, then they are preparing for it, while reminiscing about the past year's festival. Traditionally, the festival is associated with calypso music, with its origins formulated in the midst of hardship for enslaved West and Central Africans; however, recently Soca music has replaced calypso as the most celebrated type of music. Costumes (sometimes called "mas"), stick-fighting and limbo competitions are also important components of the festival.

African Tigress you did an exceptional job in highlighting the visual beauty of our Carnival and also explaining every thing to your audience. Wonderful videos, Bravo.
There are more than 19,000 Jamaicans living and working in Trinidad and Tobago and they come out during carnival time and represent with their flags and it is a beautiful thing. That explains why you see so many Jamaican flags. One Caribbean, one love. We are one Caribbean people
19.000 accounted for, but we all know it's way way more.

Jamaicans love carnival and socal...if you ever go to any Trini style carnival abroad you'll figure that out.

My lady, no need to travel the world. You can clearly see the world came to Trinidad 🇹🇹. That's why we are branded the "mecca of carnivals" we Trinis are responsible for almost 300 carnivals worldwide. We are the mother, the birthplace, of the biggest street party in the world 🌎 ❤❤❤❤🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹

Actually it's a Grenadian thing. We brought our festival to Trinidad not the other way around. Before Trinidad was Grenada says I am. Don't steal our history dear
@doreenramsey1016 I ent stealing nobody's thunder if this what you say is facts, then why is it the world ent flocking to your Island when it's your festival? From childhood we are taught of carnival in our schools, we learn wire bending costume decorating, learning to walk on stilts, and steelpan, in schools. It's in our DNA as Trinis, its our birthright, its the thing that spins our economic wheel, we always happily welcome visitors with open arms to "the greatest show on earth" ❤
So forgive me, if I think your comment makes absolutely no sense 😕
@@doreenramsey1016what the hell!!!!!!!!!😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮stop talking lies.....wow first time I hear this shit 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅

I understand how that person feels i have not been home to Trinidad for a while especially as my loving brother died.he was an All Stars player in the steelband ever since I can remember i could not imagine 💔 not seeing him in the band but as you said after watching our African sister in Christ livestreaming i got teary-eyed and I told my cousin and my sister who are vacationing in Trinidad as long as God spares life i will make up. I need to go to feel my brother's presence and to embrace my place of birth. Thank you for shaking me up. May God richly bless you.❤❤❤
I’m so sorry for your loss, I dropped a tear reading this as someone who has gone through this before! Sending you love light and hugs 🫂! Trinidad All Stars are amazing 🤩. Love them ❤️
❤❤❤ Go feel his spirit
There are a lot of Jamaicans that live in T&T so that may not only be Jamaicans who travelled here exclusively to play Carnival but ones who actually live here.
You did a wonderful job bring us live Trinidad And Tobago carnival celebration 🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🎉🎉🎉🫂
Well done in explaining our carnival Tigress 🙌🏿 All the best to u in ur travels, may u visit us here in T & T again, ur always welcome 🙌🏿❤️ Stay safe!
Beautiful I love carnival all different nations together around the globe ❤from USA 🇺🇸
You did well, Tigress, to go into the middle of the party to capture the celebration. I appreciate that very much.
Excelente reportaje, arrechisimo el carnaval en T&T, desde Caracas Venezuela 🇻🇪
Tigres, I have not been home for Carnival in over 10 years. Your coverage has lit a fire in my soul. I will definitely be going home next year for Carnival. Thanks for the footage, much appreciated.
Same here.
Longer for me. Been trying to go for years and kind of had an opportunity this yr. Lesson learned.. in life never leave what you can do today for tomorrow as it may never come. Live and enjoy life! You only live once! Even if I don’t play, to witness the beauty and excitement is an experience!!!!! One love!!!
Our Emancipation Day Celebration is a sight to behold.❤❤❤❤❤
🖤🔥📖🙏🏿
It is!
Agreed.
I enjoyed your videos as a Trini living abroad. Thank you, AT. I can't wait to see you hit 500k🙏🏾🙌🏾❤
AT you must return when we have our Emancipation Day Celebration.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The President of Eqitorial Guinea has played mas with Yuma for the past 5 years
Tuba, Tribes of Africa was a beautiful band, one of the few that had costumes that I recognized truly creatively representing the theme.
I think E. Guinea has a carnival also
That man is pure evil. They should bar him from attending.
. I was recently reading about the overly extravagant and ostentatious lifestlye spending enormous amount of money all over the world while spending on material things while most of the people in that country are living in poverty.
If true, what a shame and disgrace. Time to wake up Africa and African diaspora on what our priorities should be. We cannot love each other, our country fellows and lands if we do not love ourselves. If we did, noone would sell out to our enemies for money and favors.
🖤👀👂🙏🏿📖✌👏🏻😍
@@thetruthhasSetmefree16 Exactly!! Its actually the presidents son. Imagine bringing up about him attending carnival while he has plundered Equatorial Guinea where the bulk of the population lives on less than $2 a day. Most people in that country don't even have clean drinking water while he flaunts his excesses on IG. Then had the audacity to press the world for more financial aid, while he was in a 75,000 US a night hotel.
Should be barred from entering Trinidad. . He is a piece of trash and I hope someday he gets punishment for what he's done.
You really understood the assignment. Excellent informative commentary and superlative video coverage. Honestly, this is an award winning video👏👏👏 African men everywhere will love you for your unique camera angles.🤣🤣🤣
You deserve an award for spreading this cultural event and did better than a lot of people doing this for years now. I am proud of you AT. You did not know what to expect, your expressed yourself in the true sense with something so beautiful and amazing to watch. Your 500 and then 1 million will come for sure. Blessings, great health with Gods favor and may you be true to yourself. From Georgie and Mark.
Another great video. Love it, Tigress 💃🏿💃🏿

Congrats, great coverage.
African Tigress you should travel to St Lucia for Carnival in July.❤
Soon love I MUST visit there
Thank you ,love love🫂❤️🌹
Lovely, African Tigress.
In times gone by , the spectackle of carnival was greater , the bands used to be so big and thick , there were people on the stage from end to end , and across .
I remember ,there used to be bands with a majority of white people. Some bands were so big ,they took a while to cross the stage . If African Tigress witnessed carnival in those days , she would of been more amazed than she is now .
With the bigness of the bands and the colourfulness of the costumes the sight used to be really pretty and spectacular .
I really don't know the reason why , but for some time now , the bands have gotten smaller.
Trinidad carnival is not what it used to be . Not saying it isn't still great , but in times gone ,the stands were full of spectators and more people in the bands .
Multiple stages now
I think it's better to go back to the savana stage . One stage .
There is a second stage called the Socadrome where the whites and high colour Trinis go but you are right the numbers have dwindled over the years. We just need a revamping and reinvention of Carnival reviewing the past and traditions. Hopefully they dont evolve too much and lose everything
@@sarai373 'high color', what's a low color LOL
Too expensive of an experience....that's why not as many people going like before
Thanks you my sista...great coverage. I wasn't able to make it this year. I hope you had a great time connecting with Africans in Trinidad and Tobago. Love

Thank you for bringing this live. I too am from the Caribbean. Haven't been home in a long time. I miss carnival. You should know that all the islands celebrate carnival. Trinidad is one of the biggest for sure.
I've just been enjoying all your caribbean content 😍
I would've been really nice to see you reast the camera down and go crazy on the stage ...next time 😁

Lady AT.. Ms. Videographer. Truly aporeciate your work. Started with your Jouvert Vid, now this.
I had to laugh when you started to scream with excitement I know that feeling it’s exhilarating so glad you are enjoying yourself blessed love from London England
Thank you. I am proud of you, Aftican Tigress. You made sure you got the history and other valid information in your videos. You represented Africa and the Caribbean African diaspora very well. Thank you. As organizrd as it seems, it was much more organized some years ago when entering the stage. They did not need that group of security to have order. The people had great respect for the band leader, the costume makers, each other, the hard work and hours that went into making more elaborate and creative costumes so that when it was time to display on the stage and get their labor and money spent judged, they were diligent in following all the rules and noone without costumes could enter the band on the stage and sometimes from the time they came in the Savannah, they were already organized so all you saw on the stage was a beautiful band of colors flaming/glowing by the rays of the sun and costumes that took your breath away in orderly sections moving/flowing flawlessly, orderly and timely on the stage. It was then easier to understand what each section represented. Then when they got off the stage, then sections could mix up although most stayed orderly until they came out of the Savannah and go into the streets.
Having fun and a great time was also central. But now it seems more about just fun for the masqueraders with less emphasis on telling and showing a story of a theme with a purpose of also educating and arousing the imagination with its super creativity and ingenuity of the costumes representing the theme. It was magical and a true wonder of the world. The designers of those days needed a global award for creativity and ingenuity. Blessings, peace and love.
❤🖤👀👂✌👏🏻🙌
@thetruthhasSetmefree16: Great insights; thanks for the education. Will do some more reading and research before I go next year.
--Æ.
I miss those days when they were highly organized and you could actually see the costumes on all the masqueraders in their sections. Nostalgia. It truly was organized better then.
That😂😂😂 while crossing the stage sounds like you was pelting waist.
There is moments i joined bands and crossed the stage with them
Tigress! Now you talking when you mention Grenada.😁Thank you for recognizing the flag;. The people of Grenada’s DNA is strongly imbedded in T&T. We are excited about the prospect of your visiting Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique - the creme de la creme.😅🙏🏽 Welcome.🤗
Yea for real. ... Grenada 🇬🇩 is blood big up 🇹🇹 ❤
Great job Tigress. Makes me feel like I am right there.
YOUR VIDEO WAS SO CLEAN VIDEO AND AUDIO ONE OF THE BEST 💥
Oh gosh AT...you describe the feelings. I am 65 years old, a Trini. I played Queen of a band in 1979 at the age of 19 years old and won Queen of the peoples choice. My costume did not make it to King and Queens due to the sponsorship of the costume. I lived in Barbados but I came home every year to participate! I am going to reincarnate in Trinidad because I have not gotten enough as yet!
This same song will be playing in Toronto Canada for Caribana in August coming up also the same flags you will see
✮✮✮ *Your videos are always so thought-provoking and insightful* ✮✮✮🤩✌🏼
Congratulations on a million views! 😁
On the continental African representations, I don't know about SA, but I know that a large contingent of Nigerians and Ghanaians live in T&T, so the representation you saw likely derived from those.
Lastly, I suspect that you will get to really enjoy the festival during your editing, because I doubt you were able to take it in fully in while you were busy capturing the video for us. Really great editing on your part.👏👏👏
A lot of Nigerians and Ghanaians who live in the US also travel to Trinidad for carnival. Y'all underestimate how carnivals in the US promotes Trinidad carnival to the world.
@@Travel_plus_adventureso true! There is also a delegation from Sierra Leone who use to come every year.
@@Travel_plus_adventure We are mixing 2 things up here:
1. There are 2 Original Carnivals in the world: The Trinidad and Brazilian Rio Carnivals. Both are well known all around the world and it is on to do list of many people around the world. The fist thing about Trinidad known to the world is The Carnival. It is the largest Caribbean Carnival by far - I think every Carribbean country has a carnival, but they are only copies of the ORIGINAL in Trinidad, apologies to nationals of those countries.
Outside of the Carribean, the largest Carribbean festival is the *Toronto Caribana.* Carribeans and Africans residents in US, as well Afircan -Americans attend *Caribana* yearly in droves, possibly constituting about 50% of Carnival participants in Toronto. Just trying to tell you stylishly that the US is not known for Carribbean Carnivals as such, despite Miami's and some modest festivals in a few US cities. After the *Toronto Caribana,* next largest Festival is: the London *Notting Hill Carnival* started in 1966. The *Japanese Caribbean Carnival* has been gradually building up for years too.
There must be about 100 *Caribbean Carnivals* around the world, but most tourists and participants to those Festivals always desire to see the *The Trinidad Original,* hence the yearly pilgrimage to Trinidad - nothing to do with whatever is happening in the US. Interestingly, the Festivals copied around the world is actually the Trinidad Carnival rather than the Brazillian Rio Carnival, with a few exceptions. In Lagos Nigeria, my hometown, the mini carnivals there (at Easter and Christmas seasons), called *Fanti* derived from Brazilian Slave Returnees.
@@Travel_plus_adventure 2. We have to distinguish Carnival participants from tourist spectators. What I meant was the Nigerian and Ghanaian delegations in the parade shown by African Tigress are likely African residents in T&T, because there is a sizable Ghanaians and Nigerians living in T&T. That would be different from Ghanaians and Nigerians resident in the US who come to the festivals as tourists. Most of those will likely participate in the pre and post-parade events and parties, but will watch the actual parade as spectators.
@@idowumohammed4689I concur. You are correct on your explanation

I watched your streaming with interest. In fact I follow you quite a lot. One thing I have noted that you seem to not want to acknowledge our past with slavery. You even seem to disassociate carnival with slavery. If you are going to tell our story and culture be true warts and all. We Caribbeans are a proud people and not ashamed of our past.

Lynn, I look forward to hearing your commentary after leaving a country or an event. I appreciate your perspective. Always well thought out. As an older Caribbean woman, I'm glad that women feel and are free to show off their bodies in these scanty costumes. My concern is that it may unwittingly be leading to the continued objectification of women. Men are covered up compared to the women. Also, the simulation of sexual acts referred to as dancing doesn't appeal to me. But for those who love it, i judge you not.
I hear you, Ms Capstone. Older Caribbean man here, too, though not Trini. I hold a conservative bent myself re behaviour and deportment in public, but you have to balance that with a place's culture and history. Bear in mind that African dances evolved from simulating sexual acts. In the end, Trini carnival culture is essentially an outgrowth of that, hence...
