THANK YOU for watching!! I forgot to mention a thought on keeping clothes that are currently too big or too small-- SHOULD WE STORE THEM IN CASE WE CHANGE SIZES AGAIN? In my opinion, keep a few things, anything that is especially high quality or that you really like, but beyond that, it is INVENTORY that we have to manage, and we often forget about things in storage!

I have the hardest time when it comes to decluttering clothes. I am guilty of keeping clothes that do not fit me and feel obligated to hold onto those items for when I lose or may gain weight. Thank you for this video and your insight! I hope that you all have a blessed and wonderful New Year! 😊

I’ve ALWAYS kept 3 of my favorite “skinny” outfits just in case I happened to go down a couple of sizes. But even at that, when I was diagnosed with cancer a few years back, while I getting smaller and my clothes were getting bigger... I never thought about my skinny clothes I had squirreled away.... until one day (after I had regained the weight) I was cleaning out my closet. Felt like such an idiot! I couldn’t afford clothes that fit, and there where my 3 favorites outfits of all time that’ll probably never fit into again.

I have one vacuum bag with smaller sizes, I just keep my favourites a coat every other size and bras because they are expensive! When I change size I look there first, then I look in the wardrobe at things I can alter. If I can’t find what I need I save up and go shopping. I just try and avoid new clothes because buying from ethical sources can be expensive.

When first decluttering clothes, I found the best question to ask was "would i pack this in my suitcase if I was going on a trip?" ... We always take our most favourite clothes with us somewhere! So this question works soooo well - especially for those "i'm not sure" items.

I heard someone suggest forcing yourself to actually wear what is in your closet and drawers. That way you very clearly see why it is that you haven't worn that piece of clothing. Wrong size, needs repairs, doesn't match with other things, is itchy or uncomfortable in some way. Then you realize it's time to part with that item or you just shopped your closet and found a new look!!

I absolutely hate putting away laundry, so as I'm putting away my clothes, I've been asking myself "Do I like this enough to have to hang/fold it again?" The answer is usually no, so into the donate pile it goes. And it's great, because everything is already clean and ready to donate.

I would clarify ¨Does it fit?” To “Does it fit well?”! AND “Does it fit MY style?” I see clients with closets full of clothes that fit, but poorly (to tight or too big) and make them feel schumpy! Or beautifully sized clothes they never wear because the style fit isn’t theirs. I would ALWAYS advise keeping an outfit or two of not-everyday-clothes, the kind of nice outfit you would wear to a funeral, court, or special appointment-because when those occasions come up, you don’t need the added stress of having to buy something at the last minute. I have helped more than one crying woman (Not clients...) find an outfit for a funeral. And YES! Thrift/consignment is an awesome way to build a wardrobe on a budget! One of my 2020 Style Resolutions is to shop pre-loved first this year. (Okay, not for underwear. Or running shoes.)

    • @susannek4546

I ran across a quote that I keep in mind a lot when decluttering and I'd like to share it. It was in the book "Minimalism Room by Room" by Elizabeth Enright Phillips, and it's "Decluttering is always about forgiveness." The hardest part for me has always been the guilt associated with buying things and not using them, or wanting to get rid of something someone gave me. It always comes down to forgiving yourself and sometimes others. Good video!

Also I know clothes our meant to fit us and not the other way around, but sometimes we need to forgive ourselves for maybe not being able to maintain staying a size a lot of our clothing is in. Especially if it’s likely you will never be back to that size again (or at least any time soon).

Another good question to ask ourselves is: “would I buy this again?”
I don’t subscribe to Marie Kondo’s idea of bestowing a “spirit” to our possessions, but I usually DO give thanks for things I have owned and let go. I once read to “bless and release” things , and I find that makes it easier and is very liberating.

    • @thekingsdaughter4233
      @thekingsdaughter4233 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

That's my translation with Marie Kondo's approach, too. Someone once told me that- whenever she lets go of an item- makes a habit of saying a prayer of thanksgiving for the corresponding memories. Even if she should forget a happy memory, at least God got His due thanks for it. 😊

I always thought I had a lot of stuff but it wasn't a crazy amount. (My mom's a hoarder, so maybe I was subconsciously measuring my house against hers a little bit?) I had gotten hooked on KonMari videos at one point and decided to use her thought process of sparking joy but by going through my house room by room. I got rid of so much stuff and felt great about it. Then my husband and I went on vacation and stayed in an Airbnb that was very minimal. As soon as I walked in my door when we got home, I said, "I have too much stuff!" So I purged a good bit more and thought okay, now this is great. The other day I decided to convert all my hangers from wire to plastic. I thought I'd buy like 100; that should be plenty for me and my husband. Yeah... I went through all those before I finished MY wardrobe! I was horrified. I've always been a numbers person. So when I broke it down and thought I could wear each of these tops like three times a year, I was like WHAT?! I went through my tops like I normally would and was able to get rid of quite a few things. Then I saw your video and thought about those sweaters that I keep keeping even though they're too small. And the suits I keep keeping even though I haven't worn them in years, they are way too small for me, and I don't even want to work in a place where I would have to wear a suit. So I was able to get rid of more just by asking myself if each item was really an option, and I did notice a difference in my mindset by getting rid of those too small sweaters. It sucks having that reminder every morning that you gained weight and haven't been able to lose it. Nobody needs that kind of negativity in their life. And I hope someone who does wear suits is super excited when they find mine at the thrift store! Thanks for the help! Also, I'm starting to work with my mom on her house this weekend (I spent a whole day on her half bathroom for Mother's Day, but she kept a ton.) It's going to be a long journey through her 5 bedroom house, but I look forward to the end result and will keep watching for more tips--and motivation. :)

I would gently suggest that you still hang on to one or two "nicer than usual" outfits. I'm a SAHM and wear very casual stuff (though I wear nicer things to church). A few weeks ago, we had an unexpected death in our family; and I was glad that I could just pull something appropriate to wear for the memorial service out of storage rather than spending time and money (having neither to spare in that situation!) to find an outfit. A friend remarked that, at our age (late 40's) these occasions, alas, will keep coming up... --Author Anna Johnson tells us that she keeps two nice outfits for job interviews ready to go (including accessories) at all times. One need not put them in one's regular closet, but still...

This is my one hiccup with Dawn’s approach. If you had the time and funds to buy something quick for that occasion, would you chuck it in 6 months because you didn’t need it again, only to buy it again for the next formal event?

I do not wear at least 50% of my clothes because they don’t fit “just right” so it’s easier to wear something else - on regular repeat. 🙏Thanks for the encouragement to grieve (the financial waste, letting go of my imaginary future, etc.) and move on. Sometimes my why to let things go is as basic as that I’ve just worn something so much that I’m tired of it, even if it fits my body and my lifestyle. I try to be frugal and not wasteful, but I no longer feel the need to wear all items until they are completely worn out.

  • @lindenpeters2601

I really like the hanger trick for hang-up clothes. Turn every hanger around backwards, and when you wear an item, hang it up the normal way. In a year, look at what items have not been turned around and get rid of them! This is great for procrastinators and those who struggle with making those hard decisions.
I also love the idea or a purgatory box. If you are still not sure about those items coming out of your closet, seal them in a box and write a future date on it. By that date, if you don't miss the items in that box, you don't need them. You probably won't even be able to remember what's in there!

That might be good to add in your videos whenever you talk about guilt of getting rid of something because it cost you money. Even getting rid of things that were free to you can bring you guilt. I know I often feel guilty getting rid of things that the ppl in my life (who's love languages are gifts😛) gave to me.

You're doing the right thing. Dust mites accumulate in wardrobes, and putting clothes on your bed which you haven't worn in a year will just transfer all those mites into your duvet and pillows. When I sort out my clothes I get a huge plastic sheet and cover the bed entirely, then I move it gently away when I've finished so the mites don't get shaken everywhere. I'm phobic and OCD over dust mites!!!

I went through my clothes just last month and I was ruthless! I love your tips! My favorite thing to point out to myself is this... if I haven't worn it but I still like it, someone else is going to find it at the thrift store, love it AND wear it.
I will say this though, I had a pair of jeans and a couple pairs of capris that haven't fit me in many years so last month I was ready to part with all of them (even though I was super bummed since the capri pants were both the perfect length - I'm short too so capris very rarely are actually capris, they're more like floods lol). I decided to try them all on (just in case) and one by one, they fit! I actually walked out in a pair and told my husband that my closet made my clothes bigger! LOL I have lost some weight but didn't think it was enough to have those pants fit me. Regardless, I am pretty happy that I have my capris and an extra pair of jeans BUT I was totally ready to pass them along!!

If the clothes have been in your ironing basket for a year or more it is safe to donate them without even looking through them. True story. Apparently I really hate to iron and now I don't have to! 🤦🤣

A couple of years ago I pared down my closet to only items that fit properly and were flattering (and modest) on my large bust and small waist. I then “wardrobed” as many of the favorite items I could into complete outfits I would love to wear & felt beautiful in, ie jeans & top & blazer & scarf & necklace (I even hang dangly hoop earrings with it that I only wear with that particular outfit). It made my mornings so enjoyable to not have to groan “I have nothing to wear”. Instead I had twenty complete outfits that made me feel terrific and made dressing in the mornings enjoyable.

I have an appointment today for a re-sale shop for clothing. So as a tip from me I'd like to offer going through your donations the night before or day of any drop off donation/consignment appointments. That way they are leaving the house within 24 hours of packing and not lying around in limbo. I turned on this video to get me motivated to just go through the jeans because I know they are good sellers at this shop. I brought my laptop into the room I'm working in so you can keep me company (like having a besty nearby) :) and also to keep me focused on the task at hand. I also enjoy putting on music I enjoy for background motivation. Today is was soft latino jazz. I did not even stand in front of a mirror when trying on the clothes. Instead I just grabbed a pair of pants and tried them on. I put 3 piles. #1 Donate/Consign, #2 Keep for myself, #3 Pass on to family. Yesterday I brought you into the kitchen with me (on my laptop again) so I can get my dishes done. One phrase that inspired me to "re-think my clutter was "we are just managing inventory". That's what I've been doing all this time and I'm not interested in just managing "stuff". Thanks for hanging out with me! God gave you the talent of cheerfulness and like myself I like to stay positive so you are a good virtual friend to have for inspiration. God Bless link to music: Romantic Melodies Spanish Guitar - Relaxing Guitar Instrumental Music ♪ - Bing video Another tip: I choose music with no words because sometimes even sound can be "cluttered" and for me, having no words to listen to frees up my mind while working.

I swear the Lord speaks through you so much for me. For a week now the Lord has been asking me what I've put off in 2019 that I kept saying I would do. The answers have ranged from big things (like have 2,000 subscribers on my channel) to little things like clean out my closet. I have kept coming back to the closet because I'm mad at myself for putting something off that I could have tackled in a couple hours. I've put this on my weekly to do list for 52 weeks. I've cringed when I've opened it. Every single time. And now you've talked about it. As usual you're the motivation I need. I promise you, everyone reading this, and myself that I will have my closet cleaned out by the end of this week!!

Hope you accomplished your closet mission. The Lord told me to declutter too and not just the physical stuff😀. I get overwhelmed easily and tend to put things off coz of the sheer magnitude of the task ahead of me. He showed me (through a prophetic article online) to keep going even if at a snail's pace, take one step at a time and momentum will build. I settled on 1 kitchen shelf thinking I would stop at the slightest sign of tiredness. I got the impression to first pick similar items and bag or place them in their respective place eg, all the receipts go in their original spot (not back on the shelf) TO BE SORTED LATER, same with snack bags and the rest. Later when I get free time I pick up the individual bag to sort and discard unwanted stuff. By following this system I finished the entire shelf organisation in half hour than what I thought would be longer. I was amazed at what I had accomplished and that gave me motivation to tackle small corners of the house everyday.

I love my minimalist closet and it's true even before I got rid of my piles of unworn clothing I would really only wear a few of the same tops and bottoms because they were flattering and I felt good in them!
    My wardrobe now:
    5 tops:
A coloured cotton button up shirt
A beige linen button up shirt
    A floral blouse
    A short sleeved colored blouse
A black and white striped tee (everyone should have!)
    3 sweaters:
A beige light knit pullover sweater
    A grey light knit cardigan
    A grey heavy knit cardigan
    2 jackets:
A brown plaid blazer (everyone should have!)
A grey winter coat (I live in cold climate)
    1 dress:
    A black maxi dress
    4 bottoms:
A pair of dark blue straight legged jeans
A pair of black dress pants (everyone should have!)
A pair of burgundy dress pants
    A black maxi skirt
    Shoes:
    Brown oxfords
    Brown boots
    Brown or white sandals
    Accessories:
    A brown backpack purse
    A black belt
    A straw sun hat
    A black knit hat
    A black scarf
A pair of black winter gloves
    = over 50 outfits

I once read somewhere that when it comes to eating we typically eat the same 10 dinners in a rotation. I think this applies to our clothes as well. We wear the same basic wardrobe in rotation but we have some other things we may wear on occasion. Are those items worth the space, time, and energy? I have 7 pairs of pants. They are palazzo pants in different colors. I have 7 kathmandu tops and 7 tshirts. Everything will mix and match. This spring I will purchase 7 capris in the same colors as the pants so I can swap them out for the warmer months. What really helped me here was really defining my style. Next was getting out of the mindset that buying cheaper was better. Now I can justify spending $45 on kathmandu tops because I don't fill my closet with a bunch of clothes that I don't love, but I bought because they were a bargain. This was a huge mindset shift for me. Hope someone else finds it helpful.
Your videos are really helping me with the mindset shift in other areas.

Another way of keeping your wardrobe current is if you have an everyday wardrobe and a special/out of season wardrobe. I use our smallest bedroom as a dressing room and that has a smallish wardrobe that has my current season clothes in it that all fit. A section of the walk in wardrobe in the master bedroom has my out of season and special occasion clothes. It has summer party dresses and items like coats and shoes that I only wear on snow holidays because it doesn’t snow where I live. At the change of seasons, items with short sleeves generally don’t move, but I have a lot of sleeveless tops and dresses as summers are quite hot where I live and these change places with the long sleeve items, and my jackets and warmer clothing will come back into my everyday wardrobe.
Doing this process twice a year means you are looking at all your clothes (and lugging them between rooms!) so anything that you are moving from everyday to storage that you realise you never wore that season it’s then a good chance to consider if you will wear that item again. Sometimes I have bought new items during the season that I simply prefer to older similar things I already have and when I do the changeover that is when I realise I won’t wear the older items again and it’s time to donate them. It’s also quite fun doing this process if you have bought items on sale at the end of the season that you didn’t get the chance to wear before the weather changed (I often buy a new bathing suit right at the end of the summer) so all those new unworn items are waiting for you when you do the next switch over.
I also do this process for shoes so I don’t have winter boots in my everyday wardrobe during the summer. Out of season shoes are all stored in boxes on the high shelves in the walk in wardrobe. When I do the shoe changeover this is a good time to review the condition of shoes and whether they are still in good enough condition for another season.

I love organizing and so I have read, heard, watched, etc hundreds of pieces of advice on the subject.
And this is the BEST wardrobe advice I've heard because it's so easy to remember and real!!
#1 Does it Fit, #2 Why haven't I worn it? #3 Make room for a few new pieces this year and feel good about rewarding myself. Love it Love it Love it.
My advice is a mix of Einstein's advice and some seemingly non related marketing advice from a marketing genius...
Einstein used the uniform to keep his wardrobe simple and I like that advice not because it saves time like Einstein proposed, like 5 years or something, but
it saves brain space. A marketer once taught me that decisions are the bottleneck to productivity because you have to stop your flow to choose. But
once a decision is made then you have mind-space to work out other solutions.
So give your brain a break and decide on a uniform. It doesn't have to be boring or the same thing for every occasion... For example
when cleaning have an outfit that you wear for that,
when grocery shopping have a couple outfits for that,
when going on a date have a couple for that,
when working in the yard have an outfit for that,
when shooting videos have a signature style that makes you easily recognizable, etc.
And see how having on the same outfit gets you in the right frame of mind for that project so much faster! Kind of like Pavlov's Dog!
    * hugs *

I agree with you that it is better to err on the side of overdoing the decluttering when it comes to clothes. I have done at least two massive purges and I learned a lot about myself both times. One is that I like the plain, monotone look where I don't have to even think of how to combine things, and two, that I don't need to go shopping until what I have starts to wear out. Luckily, I don't get bored easily and I've found that I'm not as big as a clotheshorse as I used to be when younger and just want simplicity. I keep a few good pieces of jewelry and scarves to jazz things up and that's all I need.

Getting help from a color stylist has been a game changer for me. I concentrate on the colors and style of clothes that I feel good in, and yes I get compliments! I let go of so much black that just washes me out, and other perfectly good items, but they just didn’t flatter me. Now when I shop my eye is trained to go for the color, print size and what will go with my wardrobe. Getting dressed feels easy, well put together and I know I’m showing my best!

I think we put to much pressure on ourselves to "bounce back" after pregnancy. It takes 9mon to grow a baby, not everyone will be back to the same shape/size at 6wks if ever. Yes! I have done just that, Dawn. I went to the extreme in decluttering my clothes in 2019 so that what was left..was what fit and what I actually liked! The gaps were so easy to see after that! You are spot-on! I may have went REALLY far and was wearing the same denim shirt nearly everyday but..hmm oh well, the concept worked! It feels so good to be able to see what I have, wear what I love, and go back to buy ONLY what I need. New to me also..I visited my very first thrift store for clothing in 2019 and was so surprised to see higher name brands that were essentially new for so cheap! And...clothing that suited me bc there was a bigger array of colors in there than the typical "seasonally stocked color scheme" of the usual department stores. Another bonus? The guilt of spending money on buying something new, i.e. my new dress for Christmas was gone..no guilt. Because I actually needed a dress. I had only one and it was for summer ;) Gosh, we are on the same pace and mindset...we could totally be friends! ((smiles))

I've been thinking about going to the extreme and getting rid of those. What Dawn said about that and then giving you the opportunity to shop for what you really need, makes me think I should just go for it! I love the hanger method for sure. Truly appreciate your intentional ideas. We all have seasons that ignite motivation to improve. One year, needing a significant closet declutter, I made a game getting rid of five clothing items each weekend for several months with a number in mind. Each weekend I made quick pass through the closet and hung five decluttered items on back of bedroom door knob for a day to consider. If an item went back in my closet, another came out to the door knob. If a weekend was skipped, ten items came out the following weekend. Unexpectedly, my husband joined the fun, decluttering much larger numbers for fewer weeks. We shared the weekly errand of dropping items off at the donation center, affectionately called "the drop-off run". Interestingly, as we were going there anyway, we regularly added household items. The resulting space felt wonderful!

So the then I filled my place back up to feel comfortable, now there's too much. I'm looking for a balance.

OMGsh, you got me on, "It has tags on it, and you've owned it for a long time, so that makes us feel bad too." I recently did a purge and got rid of at least a dozen things with tags, some of which had been hanging in my closet for 3+ years. :O

I go through my clothes every season and donate or sell items & use that money for clothing that I want to enjoy for that time (usually from the thrift store) I like doing it because it’s like a reward & I love to shop.

When you live up north where the temperature goes from a hot day in the summer to freezing cold in the winter you cannot use the one month rule. You have to use the one year rule. Thanks for all the good tips. Very helpful.

So much of what you say is very true. Speaking as a nearly 70 year old, I would say it is possible to go to the extreme with this philosophy. No. One; I’m short too. Have you considered the unexpected event? Truly no one needs tons of dress clothes if your work situation doesn’t require it, but one outfit for summer, another for winter, fulfills the unexpected event for any possible situation. Any interview for anything. Going to church , if dressing for a wedding, funeral, any possible situation you might not anticipate that a more dressed up situation. And what about the seasonal differences of any outfit. Does a summer tie for your husband’s suit look good in the winter with a heavier material? I LOVE organized, somewhat minimal rooms and closets, but does one set of sheets cover the bases when someone becomes sick in the family, and the sheets become stained and disgisting? Without

Wow! I literally emptied my closet and drawers today and piled it ALL on my bed. And I kept thinking, I’d rather just grab what I know I love instead of touching every single thing. So now I’m going to approach this job with your tips, grab what I love, quarantine some items, and clear out the rest!! Timing on this was PERFECT!

I have a a very inflated idea of how much I dress up. I WANT to be going to places where I dress up but our social scene is more barn oriented. Church is on hold for now and I was one of the only people who really dressed up for mass every week.

I gave myself a small box, it could only fit 3 outfits, of the next size up, "just in case" I gained weight again. I was holding on to a large tub of "just in case" clothes. I picked my favorite 3 outfits & put them in a small box on top of my closet, so I am ready for "just in case". It felt good & maybe in the future I'll get rid of them, but for now I feel good about it.

I love the turn the hanger around trick. It’s that visual reminder that you don’t wear this. Pick a day you know the first of the season you know. Like 1 March, turn all of your clothes around so the hanger goes backwards, then if you haven’t worn any of that in three months because the hanger is still turned backwards, then you know you don’t need it.

Now that I have decluttered my closet, I take note of whether I consistently pass over a certain item of clothing, rather than choosing to wear it. I may decide to just pull it off the hanger and give it away or I may try wearing it one more time. Every once a while I just pull an item out and give it away. It is such a nice way to live. :)

One thing I do is if I’m on the fence about an item, I’ll wear it for the day snd see how I feel. I can usually make a decision after that.

Thanks for sharing - so many great tips and reminders! I’ve Konmari’d my clothes twice and it’s probably time for another round. Finding the Dressing Your Truth System has helped my wardrobe and clothes shopping so much! It’s given me guidelines and a focus on the colors, fabrics, cuts, and styles that I know look good on me and I feel good in. So that even if it’s on clearance, if it doesn’t fit my guidelines, it’s still not worthy of a spot in my closet. Cheers to the New Year and Decluttering!

I'm likely moving in the near future and the idea of packing/moving clothing/shoes I never wear has me purging like a house on fire. It's not as painful as I thought it would be. Going forward I'm sticking to 5 rules when shopping: 1) It has to fit me now; 2) It has be good quality & a great price; 3) It's not similar to anything I own; 4) I love it so much, it'll upset me later if I don't get it; 5) Purge two items for every one I bring home (same goes for decor/holiday stuff).

I gained some weight back I lost before, and I took out 5, yes 5, totes of clothes that no longer fit. I had clothes folded in stacks in my closet floor, and I couldn't open the door of my closet. I put them down in my garage, but I am thinking of doing like you said and only keeping my favorites from those totes. If no movement on the scale in a few months, I am going to sell them on eBay.

I don’t want to leave a huge amount of clothing for loved ones to have to go through either. So being an older person i ask myself would I want a caretaker putting this on me? If the answer is “no” then out it goes!

I have been on a declutter journey and decided that my criteria for downsizing at least initially is getting rid of clothes that are made from 100% polyester. The other criteria that I am starting to look at are clothes made in China. Then I will look at duplicates. Do I have a lot of the same kind of clothes and asking myself how many of these types of clothes do I really need. Recently I got rid of a bunch of jeans. I am not sure I can or want to do a capsule wardrobe but I do need to downsize a lot for various reasons: 1) the stress of having too much; 2) the possibility of a move this next year; wanting to simplify my life in general and 4) save $.

As I didn't want to declutter my clothes by sorting them out (because I know that I just can't throw away or donate any of this innocent, cute, still usable textiles when not having a very obvious motive) I had to be inventive. I just put all my shirts on one pile. The next morning I took the top one and wore it all day. In the evening I knew for certain if I liked the shirt or not. If it was a "no" I could easily get rid of it. Every day I consistently took and wore the top one. In the evening I either put it in the "wash and donate" box or in the "wash and keep" box. This was so much easier for me than just looking at the clothes and then decide what to do with them.
Maybe this works for someone else, too.

I've started simplifying my life last year and getting rid of clothes that I don't wear has made a huge difference. I've had to cut some losses with clothes that I've bought and never wore. It is so liberating that I don't have to look at them any more and feel guilty about spending money! I am very intentional now when I buy clothes and only replace items or fill actual needs. I own about 12 outfits plus a couple of old items for gardening and other dirty work. Love your channel for additional tips, reinforcement and motivation!

Love your videos. Some of us really cannot pull out everything and put it in one place to make a decision. Ie. ADHD -- one item at a time works best for me otherwise overwhelmed. Clutter can be a big issue for folks who collect and have ADHD. Also, what if you loved it but wore it to death and are sick of it? Nice problem, I know, def 1st world. I seem to be afraid that if I toss it I'll regret that I'm not quite done with it even if it's been sitting on its lonely little hanger in the corner of my closet for a year. Thanks. Happy New Year!
