    Update: You can buy preshaved Raybestos rear brake pads from SpeedFreaksUSA. They advertise ST-43 on their site but they were able to have ST-47s made for me as well. You will likely need to give them a call. They should take care of you.

    You must be an engineer, because as a mechanical engineer myself, listening to you speak is like hearing my own thought process lol. Great video. I will try to get some temps of my rear rotors this year at some events. Being that i still have the solid rear rotors, i wonder if the brake ducting I did will bring down the temps comparably.

      @DIYGuysvideo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm a software engineer so yeah, I'm always interested in understanding how things work! Measure your temps with the ducting enabled/disabled, I plan on doing something like that myself.

    I recommend using a touch type pyrometer over the laser style far more accurate because the reflected light can skew the number from a shiny surface. Laser type work great for tire temps however

    Thanks for the amazing video. Your methodical approach of before/after measurements are how it's meant to be done, but much bigger channels don't take the time to really get into the nitty gritty. Well done mate, can't wait what else you will do with your CR. Looks like you are driving it properly too, well done!

    • @DIYGuysvideo
      @DIYGuysvideo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! It takes a lot of time and money (track days aren't cheap) to do the testing that I do. I think most bigger channels are more interested in pushing product.
      More cooling and reliability mods are next for the CR.

    Have you tried installing a rear brake cooling duct? Just curious how it would compare. Btw very resourceful mod. I applaud you fact finding solution to your problem. Most people just buy a bbk. Throwing away a perfectly capable braking system just because they dont know how to maximize its effectiveness with little tweaks.

      Thanks for the kind words!
      I have not installed a rear brake cooling duct yet.. The folks at Urge actually told me it wouldn't make a difference but I'm still interesting in trying it out. If it doesn't make a difference on the Urge rotors I could still try it back to back with the solid rotors.

    Had a issue with not installing those metal retainers that go on either side of the brake pad. Started to get a clanking because the brake pad was loose and not fit into place. Im having to modifiy my stock ones to accommodate the larger rotor thickness. Not sure why nobody else had this issue with this kit

    @DIYGguys can you do a video on brake dust shield if its better to have them off or on the car? I know some BBK removes them but for stock cars with occasional track day and daily driving will it benefit to remove them and if it effects the braking system?

    • @mrgizmo7975
      @mrgizmo7975 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For track car it might make sense since those shields trap heat. That said they do act as a heat shield and barrier between rotor and bushings, so removing them might make the bushing grease cook. Also on a street driven car you will be getting a lot more dirt/water/etc from the wheel well onto your brake parts.

  • @andycoomber6159
    @andycoomber6159 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Would you see even higher cooling effect by removing the tin plate that sits inboard of the disc. I assume this is to keep water off the disc in road use but grooved discs shift water well.

    What lap time did you run before and after at Button Willow and ThunderHill? Was the rear brake kit the only thing you changed?

      Before at BW I ran a high 2:02 and then afterwards I ran a high 2:01. That was in the same day. The last time I went to Thunderhill East I ran a 2:11 and this time I ran a 2:08 but the car had changed a bit since then. I installed harnesses and and generally had more seat time.

    I don't know why Girodisc doesn't directly produce a rear rotor replacement.

    • @DIYGuysvideo
      @DIYGuysvideo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably because the OEM rear is a solid rotor which is something they don’t specialize in.

  • @mrgizmo7975
    @mrgizmo7975 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm assuming there is no fitment issue with any wheels/offsets, since they are same diameter and their thickness is offset by grinding out the inside of the bracket and 2mm off the pads?

  • @hatsubaichuu
    @hatsubaichuu 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What's the best method to shave down pads for this kit if you don't have used ones that meet the thickness requirements?

    • @DIYGuysvideo
      @DIYGuysvideo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      One option which I omitted is buying pre-shaved Raybestos ST-43 from Speedfreaks USA. I would guess sanding them its the best approach. Could potentially use a belt sander or a bench grinder or a machine shop.

      I have replaced my rear calipers due to sticking issues. Power stop worked well for me but unfortunately they only come in red.
      I may move to a StopTech C42 kit though.

    • @DIYGuysvideo
      @DIYGuysvideo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The urge kit works really well. I think I have like 17+ days on my kit and the rotors look completely fine. I would only consider the stoptech rear kit just to get even more life out of the pads/rotor and to review it for fun.
      I recommend the power stops since the seem to be one of the few rebuilt calipers that won’t rust since they are powder coated.

      @Tom Mills I used to run both front and rear. They are much more aggressive than the PMU HC+, even much more aggressive than PMU Club Racers. I personally really like them as the bite is generally much stronger and they last much longer than the PMU Club Racers. I recently ended up bending them at Laguna Seca and fading them but I seem to be an exception to the rule.

      I don't really want to do a whole video on the topic. It really depends on what YOU want out of your car. Most people that I see going FI are street cars. Personally, I don't want to upgrade my car until I hit a plateau and I keep going faster without changing anything on the car.

      Dont think on horsepower. The gearbox also is a part on aceleration power. Why not instead of 600 hp, put instead a shorter final drive, or a short gearset ??? On my k20 civic i have a 5.5 final drive plus 4 5 and 6 shorter gears, and my aceleration power at turn exits is bigger than cars with almost twice the power

    • @DIYGuysvideo
      @DIYGuysvideo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have! I was looking into them recently. I like that you don't have to shave the rear pads in order for them to fit. At the same time that means the rotor itself is thinner and I'm wondering if that is an issue or not. It will have lower thermal capacity compared to the urge rotors.

    • @russelloppenheimer3970
      @russelloppenheimer3970 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Look closely. Those Paragon rear rotors are SOLID rotor, not vented. Not really much improvement over stock. Be careful of generic rotor images in marketing materials. Your typical rotor is vented,so a generic photo will be vented. Read ad material carefully to make certain it actually says vented (and don't let your brain play tricks on you when you read slotted!) Make sure the photo you're lookin at is of tbe actual product, then look closely to see if vented.

      @@russelloppenheimer3970 oh god I can’t believe I didn’t notice. I just assumed anything in that price range was a 2 piece rotor. Must be a complete waste of money then.
