but why didn't people who hated the voice take away that they could tune it to be any voice they want and any attitude they want. We can all have Jarvis, Teddy from the movie A.I, HER or listening to the robot impression it does. Glados! This is just beyond fun for me, I can't wait. I get why they showed the voice being flirty, laughing and such because they wanted to demo this voice understands emotion and can convey emotion. That's hard to do in a few minute demo that reaches everyone. So I take nothing from the demo about what the final service will be. Just that we have a range of options like we've never had before.
There are going to be some very funny sexy female voices getting turned into the exact opposite by angry wives and girlfriends and the opposite for angry husbands and boyfriends. But I live on my own so I'm getting the voice I want and it will not be HER. I like the pushback/joke/insults that Jarvis can bring but we didn't see how well the A.I can do that. I suspect we'll have to have these voices dialed down and perhaps people will bring out packs we can apply prompt preferences to get certain characters/voices. OpenAI has full API access so third parties can go wild with this.
Wait for AGI.

I would like Siri to be able to work across multiple apps to accomplish a task or create a new shortcut by requesting an action verbally. For example,
“hey siri, change my wallpaper to a new photo collage of my wife.”
“Hey siri, when I connect to this speaker, start playing my radio station from now on.”
“Hey siri, make a widget showing how much money I have spent on fast food each month on my Home Screen.”
“Hey Siri, can you quiz me on the pdf I read yesterday to make sure I understand the main points?”

Look, as much as I respect people whose opinions are it’s creepy to have AI sound human, it has to happen eventually, simply because especially if we’re gonna put these things in robot bodies and be in the workforce, like how annoying would it be if every single one of your coworkers never engaged in small talk, never cracked jokes, and always remained dull, doesn’t sound very fun to me

Conversation and interaction is going to be an inevitable part of AI. You can do it right, but it’s still going to happen and trying to ignore it is unrealistic.
Making it say"um" and "haa" is pointless and a waste a processor time and memory.
I was using CarPlay and ask for the song “ Wake Me Up When September Ends”. Siri said “Sorry I can’t set reminders.” 🤪🙄🧐

Siri hasn’t been updated in a decade. Though Apple has been in talks with OpenAI so hopefully Siri gets better soon

Part of the demo was them asking the ai to be more emotional. If you don’t like the voice’s inflection, ask it to sound robotic. It’s almost as if the scriptwriter here didn’t watch the entirety of both keynotes.

Like it or not, a lot of people are going to want their voice assistant to have some personality (or maybe even a lot of personality). I think a totally reasonable middle ground would be to give the users control over that aspect. I think some already do.

I'm an introvert too and I have tried talking to GPT and it's great. But, it's pointless. you're talking to a robot which isn't getting anywhere and over time, it'll just make you feel alone for sure.

Disagree. Filler words are a crucial part of our language, and just as they allow us time to think of the next word, they allow LLMs like GTP and Gemini to answer without waiting for the whole answer to generate and then say it all in one go, which would be more annoying.
I agree with your assessment here. Maybe Apple will allow you to pick the type of person you want to listen to at the very least. If I want a "No Nonsense buisness person, male or female" I can choose that. I also think it should be "Subject sensitive" - If I want an esplaination on how to repair a TV I sure don't want a chatty Kathy. If I want to know how to tell a funny joke, I expect to get a comedian to show me. The Ai should figure out what the subject matter is. I should be able to set Seri up the way I want. That way no one will get a voice they don't want to here. However, the last voice I want to hear is the emulation of my Mother in law...lol

The bubbly voice was recently added to Word Read Aloud. Reading every line in a happy, smiling kind of tone, extremely disconcerting.

I want my own personal AI that remembers me, and isn't connecting it to the rest of the internet. Like, "AI, what did I weigh last week?" or "AI, what was my latest password for YahooMail?" or "AI, you know my diet, should I take supplements of Magnesium?"
That comes later, when ai can be processed on our devices locally.

Yeah. Bridget might sound a bit too Ick’d by AI but she is right the race to the AGI who wins our business is not by flirting and sounding friendly but rather by being respectful of our privacy, informative and productive. Otherwise we are falling into a trap.
Clearly the future of the assistant voice will be like the latter days of the TomTom where you pick your own voice and personality.
I see absolutely nothing wrong with Google’s approach to a voice assistant. First of all, she seems friendly. And secondly, if you want people to stop fearing the mindless AI apocalypse, that’s exactly what you need to be doing. What a big deal about nothing.

A bit ranty… you can tone down the flirtatiousness, just ask the AI to tone it down. You can also change the voice. They made it so you can customize it to your taste. The point was to showcase that AI can be conversational.
I watched the chat-GPT40 demo and thought OH THATS WHAT THE APOCALYPSE will sound like.. A west coast cali girl saying "OH NO I LAUNCHED ALL THE PRETTY NUKES....whoopsie" ;P

You know there’s a middle ground between casual, friendly conversation and the ability to be utilitarian and helpful. But I hope there’s going to be an option for Siri to be flat, monotone and boring for people who prefer their AI assistants that way so they can stop their incessant whining and complaining. It’s people like this that prevent a more complex photorealistic UI where an AI avatar can be customizable based on user preference.
In the ChatGPT demo they told the assistant to speak dramatically and to sing and to read like a robot, and it excelled at all of those. I suspect there will be a multitude of options.
Right now the user is able to do that. If you go to settings > personalization > customize ChatGPT
Toggle on “enable for new chats” and you’re going to get two prompts. One is: What would you like ChatGPT to know about you to provide better responses.
The other prompt is: How would you like ChatGPT to respond?
I just wish Google would turn on my lights on the first request. Not the second or third time.

When I'm jogging and ask Siri to play some item in my music library, it NEVER works. For classical albums, I try to ask it to play by composer, album title, conductor, whatever. Never works. Am I missing something? These were the guys who created iPods and iTunes but it doesn't work on iPhone 15 Pro Max.

The introduction of voice mannerisms, fays or other "imperfections (eh/.... uh, ) is an essential condition for the systems to become "high resolution". You may be ok with something like Stephen Hawking's speech generator, but for most people, these affectations are actually what makes them accept the system and cross the uncanny valley. I am very excited about having voices that sound this good.
I don't think the openai showed a giggling bimbo, but if in your opinion they did, in the same announcement they showed how you can now "prompt engineer" voice tonality and style, so you can make the system sound like whatever you want.
Now, what I am curious about is the equivalent things for these voices to the "let's delve into" obsession of GPT? what are the infections that each model will repeat no matter what and will still make be telltales of it being Generative AI-generated.
i actually do want my AI do have personality built into it. i actually hope that personality should be customizable from phone to phone down to the name you need to activate your AI assistant
I would love it if the assistant can automatically ask me several times a day: “hey do you want to keep this email titled [] from []” while also popping up on screen the email body. Like the movie Her, except one email at a time.
mmm interesting, I actually think a little personifying of Siri is a move forward and making it friendlier. ... and Yah I did switch from Google to iCloud, much happier with Apple Calendars, Mail, contacts, etc...
Maybe apps should have a separate command for the time being like hey siri for the usual stuff and hey gpt for the complex questions
If you don't want your voice assistant to flirt with you, what you want is voice control. You just don't want it because it's a female voice, switch to voice 1 and Siri will greet you instead of your husband.
One more time is good place to vent out your frustrations with technology especially if it gets too bubbly and flirty for your liking.
My hope for AI is that Apple will eventually give us the digital assistant from their Knowledge Navigator. I know John Scully’s tenure at Apple is despised by many but with current technology we’re now close to the features of that Knowledge Navigator promised back in 1987, a digital assistant that can helplessly us keep track of things and make suggestions of things we need to do. While the visual presentation of the digital assistant may not yet be possible everything else seems to be possible. As for the personality for that digital assistant, that should be something the user can select.

After watching a number of sci-fi shows I have to say the AI I found I love the most was the one on Rocinante on The Expanse. You say what you wanted and the ship did it.
