Fred Gwynne used to live next door to my grandparents. They said he had a wonderful sense of humor. My grandfather was a huge fan of “The Munsters” tv show specifically because of Gwynne’s “Herman Munster.”
No,no,no the director of the first Pet Sematary died,then they buried her in the Pet Sematary.
After that she came back to life and made Pet Sematary 2.
Thats why it's seems that the second was made by another person.

I found this movie scary as a kid, but now as a parent I found it scarier and very very sad. I also read the book last year and it was really the saddest thing ever. It really hit me because I have a kid who's about the same age as Gage. Honestly, despite all of the warnings, if I was Dr. Creed, I would've tried to bring him back too.
So many movies/shows you come back to as a adult (parent) and certain things hit you differently. This is one dark, sad story.

The suicide is explained. She finds out she has stomach cancer and she had cared for her mother who died of cancer in the past so knew what she was in for so killed herself to avoid it.
In the book she had no stomach problems
in the book it's jud s wife who died.

Pet Semetary is definitely one of the most underrated/overlooked classic horror films ever.
You almost never hear anyone mention it when they talk about successful Stephen King adaptions, when its arguably one of the best King adaptions to film.
You guys should check out The Exorcist 3 as it's another underrated/overlooked classic horror film that is also a rare case of a sequel being on par with the original, while not aping the original and being it's own original story that also continues the story from the first film while ignoring the God awful second film.
It's essentially the true sequel to The Exorcist and the only other entry in that series that's worth a look.
I agree 100% Exorcist 3 is highly underrated and IMO I enjoy it more than the original and Brad dourif should have gotten an oscar for his performance in Exorcist 3 wow what an amazing performance as the Gemini killer.

Felt the most bad for the poor daughter who ends up the only living survivor of this horrific tale. Lewis should of at least cut his losses after Rachel was dead and went back to live far away w his little girl but he was so gone by that point he wasn't at all thinking clearly.

There were actually twin girls playing Ellie. It's not just one actress. The girls's names were Blaze and Beau.
Before parenthood: Man, this book is dark.
After becoming a parent: You know...I'd be dead inside and looking for any way to fix that, too.

I had to re-read Gage's death over again in the book. I couldn't believe it. Heartbreaking.
I think they put the maids death in the movie so that death could be brought up by Ellie since Rachel was afraid of death. Ellie talks to Louis about not wanting anyone including Church to die. One of the motivations for Church to be buried in the cemetery.
I read all the major King novels between the ages of 10-12, including this one in '84 right after it came out. It was my favorite at the time, very scary, but when the movie finally came out I thought it was terrible. I was a huge Fred Gwynne fan from Car 54 and the Munsters, but it didn't help. Seemed like a joke to me. Christine was the only one of the 80's books where the movie blew me away. It still holds up. I could watch it every day. John, the only "Capenter" I'll every worship.😆
So, when can we expect a full review of Pet Semetary 2? Just joking! By the by, the face out of the rocks trying to stop Luis is indeed Victor. It was poorly done CG but it was him.
Great film from a superb book. First read it when the paperback was released. I was working nightshift as a security guard in a hospital morgue. Definitely recommend the book, but not when you're sharing a room with Mr Rigor Mortis & co!

In the book, Jud took Lewis up to the burial ground in gratitude for helping Juds wife (not included in the film).
I always thought Jud took him to use cemetery on the cat to show Lewis the power of the cemetery. Also how when the dead comes back it isn’t the same. I believe he was warning him by showing him an example. Lewis wouldn’t have believed his words. Lewis saw what happened to the cat and still used it again.
Well, according to the book, jud is under the influence or basically being controlled by the wendigo and the burial ground itself. He took louis to the burial ground even though he didn't really want to. He regrets taking him there. But he did it bc he had to.

Jud's accent is a typical country main accent. They don't sound like hillbilly southerners. Jud has the typical Yankee farmer accent

Judd was the cause for most of the tragedies in the movie when he got lewis to bury his daughters cat in the sour burial ground.knowing what would happen..he was the only character that truly got what he deserved
Except it wasn't ever really his fault. It's pretty clear that the wendigo has control over the people in the area

40:59: I was scarred by that same sequence too! The nightmares this scene gave me as a kid, far more chilling and blood curdling than any child with a scalpel.

In the book Louis buries his wife for a few different reasons. 1. He is completely under the control of the burial grounds at this point. 2. A part of him does believe that if he buries his wife sooner than the others, she may come back normal. 3. The main reason he does it is because he knows his wife will come back, and he's hoping she will kill him. By the end of the book Louis knows that his family and life are destroyed and that the only way out is to die. In fact when he sees his wife come back in the book, and he notices her pick up the knife, hes almost glad that it's happening. I love the book and the movie, but goddamn it's easily one the darkest books I've ever read.
Reading this book and The Shining literally gave me chills. I don't know how Stephen King does it, but he has an incredible talent that he's able to use effectively.

What about the daughter
You know, read the book and then saw the film in the theatre when it was first released. King did a brilliant job of adapting his book to film. Never saw it again or read the book again. I found it just too disturbing. The Director did a superb job of capturing the feel of the story., it's just that the story is just too horrible.

This is the most disturbing movie I've ever seen. Not the scariest, not the grossest, not the goriest, but disturbing. (And I'm not saying that as an insult - I'm attributing it to the movie's effectiveness) This movie just unnerved me on a level that no other movie has done.
Nice work on the review, you guys nailed it. As much as I enjoy the movie, they just left out too much from the novel for it to really work like it needed to. I wouldn't say that those that lead people to the graveyard are weak-willed, just that it's a perfect storm of grief, desperation, and genuine overwhelming supernatural influence. With Church, Louis doesn't want Elly to have to hurt and as you mentioned his wife has this huge trauma regarding death because of her childhood, and Judd is driven by the Wendigo to take him. On top of that, Louis is still pretty sure the legends are bullshit until Church shows up the next day. With Gage, Louis is drowning in grief and pain, Rachel is emotionally checked out, and the Wendigo straight-up wills Judd into unconsciousness to prevent him from stopping the reburial.
This is all in the book, but it's really difficult to convey in a visual medium where you can't literally read the characters' minds. On top of that, the key theme of the Wendigo is hunger. These people are pulled to it generation after generation because no matter how many lives it consumes, it will never be enough. The only people who can (relatively) safely live near it are people who have nothing to lose, because attachment is the hook it uses to continue the chain of burial, loss, and evil.

This movie has some flaws, but it’s still one of my favourite horror films. That truck scene and the scene at the funeral after that really went for it! Love it

Stephen King is a big fan of the Ramones and referenced some of their songs in the novel "Pet Sematary." In homage, The Ramones wrote and performed the theme song "Pet Sematary," which is featured in the film's closing credits. The truck driver was also listening to "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker" by The Ramones.
The role of Zelda, Rachel's terminally ill sister, was played by a man. Director Mary Lambert wanted Zelda and her scenes to frighten the audience but did not believe that a 13-year old girl was scary so she cast Andrew Hubatsek in the role to make something be "off about Zelda."
Tom Savini turned down the chance to direct the film.
Gage's hand lurching from the grave is a homage to the end of Carrie (1976).
When Church is found dead alongside the highway, a fake cat was used.
When Victor Pascow is being carried into the clinic after being hit by a truck, a rabies poster with a picture of Cujo can be seen on the bulletin board by the stairs.

On a side note, I once knew a smoking hot chick who had a son named Gage. He looked exactly like Gage in the movie. Kind of scared me away. I regret that. I wish I knew where she is now.

The Creeds WERE happily married in the book. The only issue between them was the topic of death and if Ellie should deal with it or not.
This is the only movie I can think of that is as scary as it's heartbreaking, specially the second Gage death.

I'll never be able to justify it, but I actually really like the sequel. Maybe it's Edward Furlong, maybe it's the soundtrack, maybe it's the ridiculous campiness, but I like it. I will admit that it's a shit movie though
It has a shit plot, but it's not a shit movie.
When I was a kid, I thought that this was the scariest movie that I had ever seen. It is still is one of the creepiest movies that I have seen to this day.
My dad once told me he used to read every Stephen king book but he stopped at pet cemetery because it bugged the hell out of him his favorite Stephen king book is misery and yes I have watched pet cemetery the original movie in fact I happen to own it and it bugged me to in fact I’ve only watched it once that is enough for me
I agree with your father. Misery for me is the best SK book, Pet Sematary is the darkest and scariest. I was almost too scared to finish it.
I just watched it for the first time. It seemed to me that the housekeeper lady’s stomach hurt because she was having premonitions about the future events, like the daughter did. I think maybe she knew what would happen to the family?

Out of all of Stephen's King's movie adaptations, Salem's Lot is the scariest. I also think that had a lot to do with Tobe Hooper. He changed Barlow from an ordinary looking man to a ghoul. I watched Salem's Lot as a child and now as a middle-aged man, and I am still freaked out by the vampires - the kid at the window, the boy in the coffin, the guy in the rocking chair. Barlow. The atmosphere is awesome. The acting brilliant. Pet Sematary, for me, is just plain dull. Isn't scary in the slightest and is 'loved by many people who saw it as young children. It's that thought of being scared as a kid, which keeps their love for this awful movie alive.
Is that even really a Tobe Hooper idea though? I feel like a lot of directors would have realised that script wasn't really scary and gone looking for ways to make the vampires more effective, and the Max Schreck look has historically been the most consistently successful method of accomplishing that task (at least in lieu of just writing a better story).
@@DistractedGlobeGuy The idea was that if they made Barlow speak, he would be mentally compared to every Dracula ever. Making him some kind of "thing" took that off the table. He changed all of the vampires from just "people with fangs" to something inhuman, a supernatural parasite masking itself as its prey.

that pissed me off in the movie when she hitchhiked home in the same type of truck that killed her son and she doesn't bat an eye at it, not to mention its literally 4 or 5 days after her son was killed!!! The book conveys the grief so much better and she gets a rental car in the book, makes much more sense. The movie was alright but I read the book first so the movie just left me disappointed

I remember watching this movie very fondly as a 5/6-yr-old kid, it *scared the **_HOLY HELL_* out of me, thanks to its overwhelmingly dark & nightmarish atmosphere and tone. I did not know what I had gotten myself into, and it *_shook_* me down to my inner core. I didn't even want to look at the video tape it was recorded on. I believe it is one of Stephen King's most frightening movies.

I recently learned that Mary Lambert also directed Halloweentown II: Kalabar's Revenge. I've loved and watched the movie for years and never knew that! As sequels go, it's got a more dark and serious tone compared to the original that I really love, and it really holds up well.
I've seen the movie and read the book and even though I'm not a parent, the scenes after Gage's death and the moments following after it really messed with me and I actually had to a take a break midway through the book involving Louis's grief because I couldn't take it anymore. Though if I ever became a parent and learned of a burial place like that there'd be no way in hell I'd do something so stupid. I have pets and I couldn't even imagine bringing them back like they are in the book because whatever heart or sanity I had left would just be gone.

I've just discovered this video and really loved this review of pet sematary. This has always been a favorite of mine. I too started watching the movies on TV and my uncle told me to read this book. i's partly his fault why I've so into horror in the first place Anyway, one day years after watching the movie, I did read it and absolutely loved. it. I do think the book was awesome too. And yeah Zelda still scares me. I think this gets scarier as I get older because while I don't have children of my own, I do have nieces and I'm really close with them so the stuff with Gage is always hard. I think this is so scary because of the horror of losing a small child and it being so unbearable. Great review!
Gage's 1st death scene, kills me on the inside every time. Nonetheless I still like, this movie.

I was an avid reader of King as a teenager so went to see this in my final teenage year when it was new at the cinema- not a patch on the book and the start of my realisation that fabulous King books could be adapted into truly dreadful movies.

The ending makes no sense (it's the same in the book). The guy just disposed of the evil undead son and cat, but yeah, let's turn the dead bitchy wife into another undead. WTF?
In the movie it makes no sense how they went about that. But in the book I can understand, he literally goes insane and his hair actually turns white from all the grief that happened in under a week. He actually believes its because he waited too long and if he buries her hours after she dies then she will come back "normal"
Pet Sematary 2 was awful, but Clancy Brown was incredible
