    I was there too and had repeated shivers down my spine as Natalie sang this. Sandy Denny died when I was only 12 but this rendition brought the soul of this song back to life. Everything about her set was magical. I don't think a concert has ever inspired such depth of emotion in me. Thanks for posting.

    It's encouraging to see artists continuing to pay tribute to Sandy and Fairport. They don't get their due (except for Richard Thompson). I've loved their music since the early 60's. I saw them at Harvard University in the late 70's during one of their reunions. it was quite a thrill.

      Natalie does a splendid, indeed best cover I've heard. I would contend however, that it is Sandy Denny, who originally sang it, that is beyond compare. No one touches my heart-o as did she. To wit> th-cam.com/video/_iCpevmITMc/w-d-xo.html

      Same as Portcullis stated nobody can sing it like Sandy, but the moment I listened to this performance tears streamed down my cheeks just because the song finally found another performer that could capture the essence of the pain it engulfs. It is a tribute and a rennaissance for this gem of world music!

    Outstanding! but I'm not surprised Nathalie Merchant is used to doing outstanding things. She'sgot so much talent and such a lovely voice. Excellente version de Crazy Man Michael qui est aussi bonne que celle de sandy Denny.

    A lovely song and a spirited performance. Takes us straight back to Sandy, though. More than a few very iffy notes too, but live performance isn’t always perfect. Still, good to hear the song again.

    • @portcullis5622

      And I would add Rhiannon Giddens to this elite list. Probably the finest technical singer in popular music, but more importantly, her voice is versatile and soulful. I bitterly regret that I never got the chance to see Sandy Denny, but I have seen Natalie Merchant and Rhiannon Giddens a few times in the last four years, and they were awesome live. It is tempting, but I try not to compare and just enjoy all three. For me, they are right at the top of a long list of wonderful female singer-songwriters.

    Best singer ever. It's frustrating when she doesn't know the lyrics and I always do. This is her full time job and I know her lyrics way better than she does. She turns down a lot of requests at her shows because she doesn't know the lyrics. Inexcusable.

    • @robertrichman6873
      @robertrichman6873 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's opinion, which everyone's entitled to, yet hardly a fact. I'd put Sandy's body of work up to Natalie's any day and come to the conclusion she blows her away. Just my opinion, of course.

      @@robertrichman6873 Shame to have to compare the two. Happily, music is not a competition. In my opinion, they are the two finest female singer-songwriters. Songs such as 'Verdi Cries', 'Thick As Thieves', 'Noah's Dove' and 'Beloved Wife' are every bit as beautiful as 'Nothing More', 'Fotheringay' 'Who Knows Where the Time Goes' and 'No End'.
