Richard Thompson is a genius, his guitar playing is stunning, especially acoustic. He has written so many amazing songs and yet he is not well known, go and see him live if you get the chance, he is very witty and humble.

This version is stunning. I have always loved the Fairport version with Sandy singing it, and I still have it on vinyl, but this is so deep and so moving.

SO much power is this sad sad story .. Richard wrote this after a van crash on the way home from a gig .In the crash his girl friend Jeannie Franklyn and the bands drummer both died .. It took him years before he could touch this song himself ...Many good wishes to him . Life is most defiantly perilous.. A very hard thing to find out at 19 ..

Wow, I never made the connection between the van crash and this song. Makes sense.

Sandy Denny with FC pinned the song to the firmament, but this rendition rides right up alongside. Thank you!!!

An early song that became one of his best solo numbers. Perfect.

I saw Fairport at Glastonbury fair in 71. They had the entire crowd doing English round dances.

A truly great song. Violence against other living creatures and bringing death into the world is always, whether we are aware at the time or not, violence against ourselves and also the antithesis of life and love. William Blake expressed this concept, along with others, in his poem "Auguries of Innocence." ------ "A Skylark wounded in the wing/ A Cherubim does cease to sing....."

@paddyeejit1954 @kra147durham His eyes they are sane, and his speech it is plain
That's the line that just knocks me out. A devastating story. I've seen RT more times than any other musician, but I've never seen him do this.
@guywolff thanks for the connection to the van crash, i never knew that
