i lived in Thailand 25 years ago and it is not true that majority of their population is poor... they are already way ahead economically than most of their neighbors in southeast asia

Bangkok is very nice city to visit , cost of living is cheaper than other city in the world ( If you never be cheated by someone) In bird eye view is so beautiful but in the walk ways or steert view look poor. I living in Bangkok, Poor this city because of thais habit especially in traffic. People can drive their bike on footpath and yelled pedestrian to walk away. People can drive their bike on the opposite direction, maybe police did it too. Almost everyone own a car but their has no place to park. They park so idiot on the roads , footpaths , in front of gates even in a brige. Taxicabs in Bangkok used to refused or asked a lot more than the price the its meter. Footpaths had taken for private use. I love the city. That is why I have to complain.
Cost of living is low unless you prefer to live in a western style apartment/condo, which may cost you more than in the west - and for what you get the apartments are tiny! Don't forget anything imported is extremely expensive, especially alcohol but also cheese, cereal, fruit juices, even cars made in Thailand are more expensive than in the west due to high excise taxes that seem to increase every year. Milk, made in Thailand is much more expensive than in the west (why is a mystery to me when the cost of labor in Thailand is lower). Fuel is roughly similar in price to parts of the USA, a little cheaper than Australia but a lot more expensive than neighboring Malaysia, Indonesia and Myanmar. The only things that are cheaper are 1) short-term accommodation 2) long-term accommodation "Thai-style" meaning no kitchen, just a dorm room - although rental houses in the suburbs with decent facilities, western appliances are still cheaper than in the west 3) local transportation such as taxis, buses, the BTS and MRT 4) eating out at local restaurants, however, western style restaurants and certain chain restaurants can cost as much as in the west - for example Sizzler, highly popular with Thais isn't cheap at all. Vietnamese cities such as Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi are much cheaper than Bangkok, as is any major Indian city such as Kolkata or Mumbai, however, the latter two are obviously not nearly as modern or developed as Bangkok.
abbrag1 Thank. I'm Thai, I agree with you, everything you say is true. The main reason is that Bangkok can not cope with rapid growth. About 60 years ago, Bangkok was a cultural city. The wide road and has many canals, such as Venice. It is a clean city with a unique lifestyle. Also available in the Old Town area. After filling the canal to build a road for many cars., the cause of many problems. The canal to road is too narrow. but it makes Bangkok flood is heavy every year. And now Bangkok is building many new skytrains and improving the new canal for passenger boats. In less than 5 years, traffic problems in Bangkok will improve. And Bangkok will become the Venice of Asia again.
Yes, Bangkok is more of a modern world class city with impressive modern architecture. Its made so many remarkable changes over the years that it hardly resembles how it looked in the past. One things seems to be the same though. The traffic situation is as clogged as ever. That said, it's still a great city.
+cherdchit tiyawong I hope you're right, but unfortunately, that's been expected before. The elevated expressways were suppose to help reduce traffic problems. The BTS skytrain and subway was suppose to help reduce the problem. Neither one has helped at all. I think part of the problem is that tourism has continued to increase over the years. The number of high-rises and hotels has also increased. But also more people from others parts of the country continue to move to Bangkok to look for work. Many more single house gated communities, townhouses, and condos keep going up around the outskirts of Bangkok. Bangkok area is growing larger all the time. And I'm sure you know that there is more new construction in progress which is expected to be completed by this year and for the next 5 years. One of those buildings, Grand Rama 9 Tower, will be the tallest in SE Asia, and one of the tallest buildings in the world. By the time BTS is completed, the traffic problem might still be as bad as ever, especially if the metropolitan area around Bangkok continues to grow.
The slides and footage shown here was 2015-17 ish. Now in September 2018, many buildings, green parks, metro line are pop up and many landscape renovation are complete.

ตรงนี้แหละจะเป็นcbdแห่งใหม่ของกรุงเทพ วางผังดีน่ะตรงนั้นอ่ะ , เสียดายที่สมัยอดีต รัฐบาลไม่คำนึงถึงผังเมือง ตึกสูงเลยขึ้นเป็นดอกเห็ดทั่ว กทม มองด้านบนสวย แต่ด้านล่างดูไม่เป็นระเบียบ วุ่นวายไปหมด สายไฟนี่ควรแก้ด่วนๆ กับปัญหาน้ำท่วม , บ้านเรา ย่านที่ยังพอดูได้หน่อยก็คงจะเป็นแถวตึกมหานคร ย่านนั้นยังพอมองเห็นผังเมืองสวยๆได้นิดหน่อยเมื่อเทียบกับ SG KL และย่าน Makati & bgc ของฟิลิปปินส์ ฟิลิปปินส์ถ้ารัฐบาลไม่คอรับชั่นน่ะ ย่านmakati ,bgc จะเป็นย่านที่มีผังเมืองสวยที่สุดเลยละ เพราะตัวตึกถนนต่างดูสะอาดเป็นระเบียบเรียบร้อย ให้อารมณ์คล้ายๆนิวยอร์คจิงๆ เสียดายเนอะ ยิ่งปินอยเป็นชาติที่หัวสูง ชาตินิยมสุดๆด้วย ภาษาก็ดีสุด ถ้ารัฐบาลเมื่อก่อนไม่ทำประเทศพัง คิดว่า ปินส์นี่น่าจะเป็นตัวท๊อปเอเชียเลยแหละ ดูทุกวันนี้สิ เดินออกไปนอกย่านมากาติ ,bgc ไม่ถึงโล หนังคนละม้วนเลย หนักกว่ากรุงเทพมากก บ้านเราหลายๆเขตหรือนอกๆเมือง ชานเมือง ยังพัฒนาเท่าเทียมกัน แต่มะนิลานี่ น่ากลัวจิงๆน่ะ Homeless แบบเยอะมากๆ ถนนหนทางคือแบบ เฮ้ยนี่ออกมาจากย่านมากาตินิดเดียวเอง เหมือนสวรรค์กับนรกยังงัยยังงั้นเลย สกปรกมากก เหม็นมากกก สลัมแบบเยอะมากก คลองเตยบ้านเราจิ๊บๆ ใครไม่เชื่อ ลองหาโอกาศไปเที่ยวฟิลิปปินส์ดูน่ะ ย่านไฮโซหรูหรา Makati นี่อารมณ์เหมือนอยู่เมกาจิงๆแก คล้ายๆสาธรบ้านเรา แต่ถนนหนทางผังเมืองเค้าดูดีออกแนวตะวันตกมากกว่า ส่วนbgc ก็คล้ายสีลม สยามแสควบ้านเรา คือ2ย่านนี้ มันก็ไม่ได้ดูใหญ่อะไรมากน่ะ แต่สะอาด ทรงตึกออกแนวเวสเทิน เปนย่านคนรวยอ่ะเนอะ ย่านcbdเค้าแหละ , เปนย่านที่คนปินส์เค้าภูมิใจมากกก แต่มีดีแค่2ย่านนี้จิงๆ รอบๆเมโทรมะนิลา ห่างออกไปนิดเดียวจาก2ย่านนี้ มีแต่สลัมรอบๆ เยอะมากก อารมพระขโนง แต่หนักกว่ามากกมียามตำรวจถือปืนทุกที่ โจรก็เยอะ โฮมเลสเอยรัยเอย ไม่แปลกใจเลยที่ ฟิลิปปินส์คล้ายๆบ้านเรา แหล่งท่องเที่ยวชายหาดก็สวยกว่าบ้านเรา แต่ไม่ค่อยมีนักท่องเที่ยวเลย เพราะโจรเยอะ ไม่ปลอดภัยจิงๆ อินเดียที่ว่าดูน่ากลัวสุดแล้ว มาเจอคนปินส์เหมือนพวกอันธพาลงี๊ น่ากลัวกว่ามากกกก กลัวโดนปล้น เรียกค่าไถ่, จิงๆ อินเดียซกสุดแต่ผู้คนน่ารักมากก ยิ้มแย้มตลอด ยิ่งบอกว่ามาจากไทยแลนด์ เค้าจะดูดีใจมากก แนะนำนู่นนี่ เด็กๆที่นั่นก็น่ารัก แต่เนอะต้องระวังเรื่องเชื้อโรคสุดๆ , KL สะอาด สงบ เป็นระเบียบเรียบร้อย ผังเมืองสวยสุด โดยเฉพาะแถวตึกแฝด. ตึกนี้คือตึกกู้หน้ามาเลจิงๆ , แต่เมืองไม่ค่อยใหญ่เหมือนบ้านเราหรอก เล็กนิดเดียว การคมนาคมสะดวก แต่เรารู้สึกว่ามาเลไม่มีเสน่ห์อะไรที่ดึงดูดนักท่องเที่ยวเลย ด้วยศาสนา กฏหมายบ้านเค้าที่ดูเคร่งเกินไปมั้ง มันเลยดูขรึมๆ อึดอัดงัยไม่รู้ ไม่มีสีสัน คือเที่ยวแค่วันเดียวก็เบื่อละ ไม่มีรัยหวือหวาน่าสนใจ, SG ถ้าจะให้เทียบก็อารมณ์แบบเหมือนอยู่เมือง เมลเบิร์น ,ซิดนีย์ ของAU เลย ใครที่เป็นสาวก Citylover สิงค์โปร์ตอบโจทย์มาก เล็กพริกขี้หนูของแท้ ผังเมืองสวยกว่ามาเลน่ะ ตึกดูทันสมัยสุดๆ สะอาดสะอ้าน ถนนหนทางดูดี คนชาติเค้าหรือแม้กระทั่งนักท่องเที่ยวกูมีเคารพกฏบ้านเค้าดีน่ะ ความมีวินัยในชาติเค้าสูงมากจิงๆ การจราจร คมนาคมต่างๆสะดวกสุดๆ เที่ยวสิงค์โปร์ก็เหมือนได้ไปเที่ยวออสเตรเลีย ฟิวนั้น ในอาเซียนนี่ sgถึงประเทศจะเล็ก แต่ต้องยกให้เค้าเปนพี่ใหญ่เลยแหละ สิงค์โปร์นี่เป็นหน้าเป็นตาให้กับSouth east asia ที่แท้ทรู . เมืองที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในในอาเซียนคือ กรุงเทพมหานคร ตึกเยอะสุดแล้ว รองลงมา JK, MLและ HJ แต่ถ้ารวมทุกอย่างก็ SG อันดับ 1ทิ้งอันดับ2และ3ไปไกลมาก ตามด้วยKL และBKK .

Bangkok is very nice city to visit , cost of living is cheaper than other city in the world ( If you never be cheated by someone) In bird eye view is so beautiful but in the walk ways or steert view look poor. I living in Bangkok, Poor this city because of thais habit especially in traffic.
People can drive their bike on footpath and yelled pedestrian to walk away.

Almost everyone own a car but their has no place to park. They park so idiot on the roads , footpaths , in front of gates even in a brige.
Taxicabs in Bangkok used to refused or asked a lot more than the price the its meter.

Cost of living is low unless you prefer to live in a western style apartment/condo, which may cost you more than in the west - and for what you get the apartments are tiny! Don't forget anything imported is extremely expensive, especially alcohol but also cheese, cereal, fruit juices, even cars made in Thailand are more expensive than in the west due to high excise taxes that seem to increase every year. Milk, made in Thailand is much more expensive than in the west (why is a mystery to me when the cost of labor in Thailand is lower). Fuel is roughly similar in price to parts of the USA, a little cheaper than Australia but a lot more expensive than neighboring Malaysia, Indonesia and Myanmar. The only things that are cheaper are 1) short-term accommodation 2) long-term accommodation "Thai-style" meaning no kitchen, just a dorm room - although rental houses in the suburbs with decent facilities, western appliances are still cheaper than in the west 3) local transportation such as taxis, buses, the BTS and MRT 4) eating out at local restaurants, however, western style restaurants and certain chain restaurants can cost as much as in the west - for example Sizzler, highly popular with Thais isn't cheap at all. Vietnamese cities such as Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi are much cheaper than Bangkok, as is any major Indian city such as Kolkata or Mumbai, however, the latter two are obviously not nearly as modern or developed as Bangkok.

The wide road and has many canals, such as Venice.
It is a clean city with a unique lifestyle.
Also available in the Old Town area.
After filling the canal to build a road for many cars., the cause of many problems.
The canal to road is too narrow. but it makes Bangkok flood is heavy every year.
And now Bangkok is building many new skytrains and improving the new canal for passenger boats.
In less than 5 years, traffic problems in Bangkok will improve. And Bangkok will become the Venice of Asia again.

Yes, Bangkok is more of a modern world class city with impressive modern architecture. Its made so many remarkable changes over the years that it hardly resembles how it looked in the past. One things seems to be the same though. The traffic situation is as clogged as ever. That said, it's still a great city.

+cherdchit tiyawong I hope you're right, but unfortunately, that's been expected before. The elevated expressways were suppose to help reduce traffic problems. The BTS skytrain and subway was suppose to help reduce the problem. Neither one has helped at all. I think part of the problem is that tourism has continued to increase over the years. The number of high-rises and hotels has also increased. But also more people from others parts of the country continue to move to Bangkok to look for work. Many more single house gated communities, townhouses, and condos keep going up around the outskirts of Bangkok. Bangkok area is growing larger all the time. And I'm sure you know that there is more new construction in progress which is expected to be completed by this year and for the next 5 years. One of those buildings, Grand Rama 9 Tower, will be the tallest in SE Asia, and one of the tallest buildings in the world. By the time BTS is completed, the traffic problem might still be as bad as ever, especially if the metropolitan area around Bangkok continues to grow.
