    I've been to Tristan da Cuhna three times on RFA Blackrover. We often transited between Falklands and Simons town, South Africa and stopped off to show the flag. I bought a few cans of beer in the bar, ate the best crayfish I've ever had and bought a souvenir woollen hat with a penguin embroidered on it. I didn't see any penguins there just donkey's cows and sheep. Our ships football team went ashore to play the locals on a very lop sided pitch.
    Lovely place and people, happy
    memories.
    PS, why have you got a bus stop ??? Never thought to ask before.😂

    This tiny island has been the subject of poetry! If I remember correctly it was mentioned in a stanza of an ode by the English poet probably Alfred Tennyson! The ode was in the name of Queen! I read it in the year 1959 in my school! But sadly I don’t remember its lines ! Good old days!

    When the population was moved to Britain in 1961, I was 11years old, and I remember seeing 4 Da Cunhian men building a wooden boat, at an event in the Kelvin Hall, in Glasgow. They didn't look like anyone in the video. I thought that they appeared to be very skilled workmen, but also, they looked quite 'primitive'.

    • @osasunaitor
      @osasunaitor หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I visited Svalbard last year, I was expecting a small, isolated settlement like this one, but to my surprise there is quite an international and vibrant community. Longyearbyen, the capital, hosts over 2,000 residents (permanent and temporary) and has direct flights to Norway every day. It's basically a small city with shops, restaurants, hotels and even public transport. I think that having an airport really makes a difference there.
      However, there are some smaller towns with Russian miners and Norwegian scientists which are harder to reach. If you want to really experience remoteness, try to visit those: Barentsburg, Sveagruva, Ny Ålesund and especially Pyramiden, an old Soviet mining town that can only be accessed by boat in summer and snowmobile/dogsled in winter.
      Also be prepared for the 24h sunlight up there!

I've lived in the Falklands for 20 years and Tristan de Cunha looks very much like the Falklands: the houses, the people, the way of life. I suppose if you want to get the feeling of that way of life, then Shetlands will be just the place!
